@jeanl
First of all thanks for your great tool. I recently started using it due to its unique bitmap editing feature and then also found that its OCR feature is much better that in other tools I had used.
Had 2 small problems (1.5 version) until I found workaround.
1.The first problem (at bitmap editing) was that if I didn't manually set different colors for auto-clut (manual setting for the forced 'auto' is not offered when export to bmp starts from ifo CLUT), then I had 2 same colors in auto-clut (the original ifo clut had 3 same colors with varying transparency) and then there was no way to separate patterns. It only started to work after I'd changed the default auto colors to 4 different ones. Not a big problem but maybe changing defaults for auto-clut (forcing all 4 auto-colors different) would be useful here?
2.The second thing was wrong time codes in .srt for the OCR-ripped subtitles (both in full-domain* and sup modes). As I can see in this page of the thread, another user mentioned a similar thing. I earlier had that problem in SubRip and didn't expect to find it in newer tool, so it even took me some time to find this out in the resulting mux.
It wasn't a constant delay, so retiming the whole stream didn't help. In a set of 515 lines the offset values were -1 to -3 seconds, while the original sups muxed back were perfectly synched. I tried 2 different tools with those .srt (TAW4 and SubtitleCreator) to be sure. Finally, I had to separately rip original timings from demuxed sup to empty .srt (SubtitleCreator gets time codes perfectly) and copy/paste every translated line to it. That did the thing.
* In full-domain mode there was an additional time code shift (about 4s) in the last 70 or 100 lines.
Do the latest modifications fix it (I used 1.50)?

Yes, I fixed this problem recently, but I haven't published the fixed version. Indeed if some of the colors are identical in the default CLUT, the import/export function does not work well at all.

I think it's possible that the updated version also fixes this problem. Send me a message at jeanldvd at free dot fr and I'll send you the latest version, so you can try whether the problem is fixed or not. If not, I'll take a look at it.

Thanks for your reply.
I tested time codes with 1.5023 and got the same issue. Looking at the values, they seem to come from 30/29.97 difference, as if the program derived time codes from 30fps, assumed instead of actual 29.97. The DVD length was 49:17, time code shift by the end was about -3 s. So probably this can be cured by framerate conversion (e.g. in SubtitleCreator). If the 1000/1001 is the actual reason (I didn't try it on PAL yet) it would be nice to have an option to type the actual framerate value before saving OCR results to .srt. BTW, this thread has just passed over 1001(!) post :) .

DVDSubEdit outputs time in non-dropframe (see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1124416#post1124416 for a lengthy explanation). So this means that for NTSC, the time output in the srt file progressively falls behind the "real" time (i.e., the time you'd measure with a stopwatch while watching the movie).
I'm not sure what's the proper way to output time in srt files. I could make that an option, so the user can select to use either non dropframe (the current default) or dropframe.

I see we can export srt's but can we import them as well? :)
r0lZ

Certainly not. DVDSubEdit is not a tool to generate subpics and/or mux the video. It can only modify the existing subpics in place, without modifying the overall VOB structure.

Version 1.51 of DVDSubEdit is now available here (http://www.videohelp.com/~DVDSubEdit/)...
A few improvements and bug fixes.
This is the change log since version 1.5
Version 1.51
Added retiming for sup files.
Added code to check that the auto clut does not have two identical colors, and abort editing with external tool if it does.
Added "invert selection" button.
Added proper handling of "Delete" key in OCR edit box.
Removed annoying warning about using autoclut when modifying subpics with external tools and colors are ambiguous, and you're already using autoclut.
Added option in preference to disable "CLUT warning" during bitmap export/import operations, when the bitmap only uses 3 colors.
Added an option in preferences to show the absolute PTS time, or the PTS relative to the first VOBU. It is customary in SUP file to display the PTS relative to the first VOBU. However, in many cases, the absolute PTS reflects the real display time of the subtitle in the movie.
Added shortcut Ctrl-Shift-E to edit bitmap with external tool.
Changed the default AutoClut colors so no two colors are identical.
Made a change to fix problems arising with PAL subpics in NTSC video.
Adjusted the area cut when removing words from subtitles.
The play buttons are now disabled when loading a sup file.
Sup files were sometimes created with a read-only flag. This is now fixed.
Fixed a bug that could cause a crash in some cases (e.g., only changing force-start to normal-start) when saving.
Fixed a problem that could cause DVDSE to hang when opening very short VOB files.
Fixed a problem with how buttons were displayed when not selected and not activated.
Fixed a few problems with start and end x/y values when exporting/importing bitmaps.
The user manual has been updated for this version.

Thank you very much Jean.
Has the "apply to all" bug been addressed regarding changing infinite timing to a stop command? By this I mean:
Answer yes when DVDSE asks if you want want to add a stop command. If you then Apply last mods and Apply last mods to all, the durations of the other infinites stay infinite.

That's because your most recent file list is empty. When you start using DVDSE, there will be a list of the files you last opened below the preferences item.

Version 1.51 of DVDSubEdit is now available here (http://www.videohelp.com/~DVDSubEdit/)...
Great, DVDSubEdit becomes even better!
Will you share the source code as well with us?
Last source I see is 1.50.
I guess, the 'drop frame' vs. 'non drop frame'
option for NTSC subtitles (discussed here in
September 2009) is not implemented yet. However
this shall not be kind of grouching, thank you
very much for the new version!

Please (re)read the forum rules, it is not necessary to post a question more than one time.
A delay of 1 millisecond can not be detected by a viewer since each video frame is on the screen for 33 to 40 milliseconds (depending on TV standard). But if you want to correct it MuxMan has a spinner to set the audio delay.

Hi everybody! I'm running DVDSubedit 1.51 under Windows 98SE.
Being aware of what was written in post #33, I'm trying to replace a subtitle stream with another (translating the text from English to Italian).
I use the IFO CLUT (attachment 1) and edit the subpics as 16 colors bmp with Corel Photo Paint 7 (attachment 2).
I choose the grey from the color palette on the right to write the text in Italian. The new text has no outline (attachment 3).
Then I import the modified subpic (attachment 4) and save all the modifications.
When I play the VOB file with VLC player the modified text is black (attachment 5).
I believe the new subpic data have the same size as the original one. Can anyone tell me what went wrong?
Thanks in advance.

mmm, this is strange. DVDSE shows the subpic in white, but the player shows them black? If you re-load the VOB in DVDSE, it shows the subpics in white, right?
I don't know what's going on, I don't think I've seen this problem before.

The problem can be fixed easily by changing the original black color in the CLUT to white (if there are no other subpic streans in the same VOBs.)
But Jean, that doesn't explain why the problem occurs. :(

Many thanks to both for the quick replies.
If I reload the VOB file with DVDSE the modified subpic is white. I will try rOIZ tip and let you know.

Well, if DVDSE shows them white, then I'm not sure what r0lZ's suggestion will do? The IFO CLUT shows them white, so why isn't the player showing them white? Puzzling. In DVDSE, they're shown white when the IFO CLUT is used right? (as is visible from the screenshots you showed). If by mistake you were using another CLUT, then that could explain it (for example, the auto clut). But that does not seem to be the case... If you cut a small snippet (with josoto's cutfile which you'll find in the vobblanker's home page) with a few subpics, then send that along with the IFO, I'll be able to reproduce the problem (perhaps). jeanldvd at free dot fr.
Another thing to try is to open the file in other player (mediaplayerclassic for example) and see if the problem exists.

No! Hardsubs are extremely difficult to remove. (In fact, you can't, but sometimes you can somewhat blur them.)

Hi,
I have a few curiosities.
Is it possible to use your software to extract subtitle from video_ts folder (with or without timecodes)?
If not is it possible to add this feature you think?
Sometimes I need to extract subtitles from dvds to write in the text form for people to read educational material.
Also, is it possible to add a back bar (background colour) on a plain text subtitle by using dvdse to make the text easy to read?
For example some dvd authoring softwares don't give you an option to automatically apply (but allows to do it manually) the back bar or back drop colour, and if one has several hundred subtitles, it becomes a tedious job to do them all manually.
It would be nice if dvdse allows to add one and then "apply to all". I understand it allows to change the colour and transparency of the back bar.
Another strongly desirable feature would be if it could allow to correct the subtitle text or at least allow to correct one or two typos.
I am sorry, may be I am being too demanding but I thought these things may not be too difficult for people like you to add easily or only with a little bit of effort.
Just think about it.
Thanks,
fulham

You can already do all these things, with some limitations.
You can convert the subtitles to text with the OCR, and save them to disc. You have to process each domain and each subpic stream one at a time.
You can often (but not always) add a black rectangular background around the subpics. But this is a bit tricky. You have to edit the DVDSubEdit.ini file (located in your %appdata% folder) and change the values of the CropBackgroundBorderX and CropBackgroundBorderY options. They specify the width and height of the border around the subpics, in pixels. I use 20 and 8. Then, launch DVDSubEdit, click "Crop subpic background" and change the background colour and opacity. Apply to all and save.
Note that if the background is already cropped, you cannot enlarge it, but most of the time, the background covers the whole image.
You can fix typo errors by using the OCR feature and editing the wrong subpics. But you can only remove characters. It is not possible to type something else. (This is because DVDSubEdit is not a subpic generator. It can only change some aspects of the subpics, in place.)
If you really want to change completely a specific subpic, you can save it as a BMP, edit it in any paint program, and re-import it.

Thanks for the quick response.
About the saving of the text, I knew about using ocr and then 'copy & paste' each subtitle's content on say word or something similar.
Am I right in saying that one cannot simply export the text from the entire bunch of subtitles together, right?
About the 'cropping' the back bar, are you talking about 'generating' a back bar against a plain text subtitle with no back ground and margin, right?
I will appreciate a clarification as I am not a computer person.
Thanks

Am I right in saying that one cannot simply export the text from the entire bunch of subtitles together, right? No, just click "save as .srt" to save all subpics in SRT format. (This is the text format used by many AVI/MPEG software players. You can easily edit it with a good text editor if you want to remove the time codes and keep only the text.)
About the 'cropping' the back bar, are you talking about 'generating' a back bar against a plain text subtitle with no back ground and margin, right?
The subpics are 4 colours images. Usually, the subtitle is white, and has a black outline. Often, a third colour (grey) is used to do some kind of antialiasing. The last colour is (almost) always completely transparent. It's that transparent colour that I call "the background". It covers usually the whole picture, but you cannot see it, as it is transparent. You can crop it with the method I have explained, to keep only a rectangle around the subpic. (The dimension of the rectangle is relative to the size of the subpic, but can be adjusted with the two options in DVDSubEdit.ini.) When the background has been cropped, you can change its opacity to use it as a "subpic highlighter", as it will cover partially the image beneath the subpic. I have used that method to hide the hardcoded subtitles with a subpic stream, or to make subtitles appearing on the credits more lisible. The method is easy. Try it, and you will immediately see if it suits your needs.
It is not possible to generate a real black outline around subpics that have no outline by default, as this would require to regenerate completely the subpic.

This is an example (using 20 and 8 for the crop values)
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/4916/subpicbackgroundexample.th.png (http://img641.imageshack.us/i/subpicbackgroundexample.png/)
The subtitle has a standard black outline, and I have added the rectangular translucent area.
Of course, if you set the CropX value to, say, 360, the entire width of the image will be covered.

I think r0lZ answered all your questions very nicely! One detail: the option to adjust the crop x and y values are in the preferences (so you don't have to edit the .ini file).

One final question - setting the x and y crop values to the one you have suggested, would the size of the subtitle (1 line vs 4 lines for example) make any difference?
Thanks.

1st February 2010, 02:38
Yes. The values of the X option is the number of pixels added to the left of the leftmost pixel and to the right of the rightmost pixel of the subpic. In my example, the rectangle begins at 20 pixels to the left of the black outline of the letter "L", and ends at 20 pixels to the right of the dot. Similarly, the border begins and ends at 8 pixels above and below the subtitle, because I have specified 8 for the BorderY option. Of course, if the subpic has only one line of text, the overall height of the rectangle is less than for 2 or 3 lines. As I have explained above, you can force the border to occupy the whole width of the image by specifying a large number for X, but it doesn't make sense to do it for Y, as you don't want to cover the whole image with a translucent rectangle! Also, the background disappears when no subtitle is displayed. (Take care: in some DVDs, there are some empty subtitles. The border will be displayed, even if the subpic is empty. Use the "hide subpic" button to hide them.)

A printscreen won't do it. Here's what you could do:
- Save the subtitles as a sup file (in DVDSE).
- Send me the sup file (jeanldvd at free dot fr)...
I should be able to take a look using the sup file.

If you're trying to open the DVD straight from the disc then that would be normal (a disc in read-only). YOu have to make sure you rip your DVD to your hard-drive first, then open that.
Also, If the vob files are opened by another program (like DVDShrink), DVDSE will complain that they can only be opened as read-only. Close DVDShrink then open them again.

Hi,
Somehow or other the second half of subtitles in my an hour long video clip appear about 1 second late. I want to move them forward but I have to apply the change to the whole lot which will make the first half to appear too early OR I have to move the second half (about 300 subtitles!) one by one which is going to become a hassle.
I can re-time those subtitles using 'subtitle workshop', but then I will lose all the changes I have made (italics, bold, underlines etc) within the dvd rendering software which also doesn't let shifting of multiple subtitles together.
Is there a (simple) way to make this happen in DVDSE?
Cheers!

You can select a specific VOB/Cell ID in the upper right corner, and apply the changes to all subpics of that cell only, then repeat the operations to the subsequent cells. With some luck, the second half begins at a specific cell, and that should be easy. Otherwise, you can split the cell with VobBlanker, or regenerate the DVD with your authoring program after having added a chapter point at the right position.

r0lZ is right, that's probably the easiest way to do it. Now, make sure you make a backup of your DVD before you do that, as you know DVDSE works directly on the VOB, and there's no way to undo a change. So if things get messed up, you'd lose all the work you would have done...

Thank you both r0lZ & Jeanl!
It did work almost perfectly, except that a few subtitles that were drifting more and more towards the end of the dvd needed to be corrected manually.
The entire project could be saved without any hassles.
Thanks.
BTW, I couldn't hear any sound when I played the dvd within DVDSE while editing - is that normal?

I have a feature request. I'd like to see the addition of a resize (with separate x & y values).
Some titles can be too large or too small. Additionally, it'd be nice to tweak the y value if moving subs between PAL and NTSC DVDs.
I suspect this would be outside of what DVDSubEdit normally does, but still, it'd be a nice feature.

That's not easy: you can't easily rescale and get nice results, because of the anti-aliasing that has to take place to make subs look good. You can't really rescale the whole thing (anti alias and body) for good results...

The difficulty is that the original bitmap only uses 4 "colors" (or pixel types). After resizing, the resulting bitmap also needs to only use 4 colors. So you can't use a standard resizing algorithm (one that would do some kind of interpolation between pixels) because you'd end up with way more than 4 colors. If you quantized after interpolation to get back to 4 colors, the resulting anti-aliasing may not be very good. But I understand the difficulty of doing it manually, that's not practical when you have hundreds or thousands of subtitles. I don't have a good solution at this point... Moving is a lot easier than resizing! :)

The reason I mentioned Image Grabber II is it has a nice little batch convert feature. If you unpack the subs to BMP images, you can use Image Grabber to resize all in one go and then repack back to .SUP format (or whatever you want).
But as you said, it's just easier to move the subs back onto the the screen. It's what I do 9.5 times out of 10.
Frankly most of the time I think PAL DVDs don't properly account for the aspect ratios when they generate the text to start with.

Although I never used this function, they claim this version could edit the menus. I use DVDsubedit mainly to reposition the subs, to change their colours if needed and sometimes to synch one or two of them that are blatantly out-of-synch. It's an excellent piece of software for this functions.

All recent versions can edit the menus, afaik. They can save the highlight and background as BMPs, and they can load the highlight BMP back. That means that the highlights are editable with any paint program. Maybe v1.39 was the first version able to do that?

SUB/IDX does not belong to DVD. If one needs VobSub subtitles, there are plenty of other programs that can do this, like SubtitleCreator.
This is the first symptom of the disease called "Windows" or "Microsoft Office": when the basic programs start having functions that do not belong to the core, and these functions take over the core ones.
I have a SAT receiver, that should do what a SAT receiver should do, namely receiving DVB-S broadcast. Yet a couple of "unhappy" owners managed last year to force the manufacturer to include AVI playback as well (the manufacturer also tried to get a bigger piece of cake). Once this function was given, then all the effort of the FW team was directed to patch the AVI playback, as not all AVIs are equally created. Several FW revisions tried to fix the AVI playback issues, meanwhile two important core functions (EPG and AC-3 lipsynch) were left faulty all this time, and not yet patched.

I see your point with feature creep. On the other hand: If there's a feature that's very easy to implement, and does not compromise the integrity of the app, then why not go for it? If it's a feature that's hard to write (like, adding to an existing stream, or to an existing subtitle) and does not belong to the app to begin with, then I fully agree with you.

Not sure if that will work, but have you tried to Crop Subpic Background? Doing so might be sufficient to steal some space to the subpic bitmap. Otherwise, you can perhaps try to export the subpic as BMP, simplify it somewhat, and import it.
Note that I'm not sure DVDSubEdit can use some space occupied by the bitmap to give it to the DCSQT, so I'm really not sure it's a good idea.

That was the right idea r0lZ! Thanks for suggesting it. Indeed, DVDSE tries to reclaim as much space as possible from the bitmap to give it to the commands. As you said, it's often as easy as clicking "Crop background", which shrinks the bitmap to the smallest rectangle that contains the text, plus some border that's adjustable in the preferences.

Are you loading PAL or NTSC movies? The problem sounds like a drop-frame issue, for NTSC, but if you're opening PAL movies, then I don't know what's going on.
I think in the preferences there is an option to display times as drop frame or non drop frame. I'm not 100% whether this affects sup files (I don't remember and I don't have the code in front of me). If you find this option, toggle it and try again, and see if that fixes the issue... I think so. All that it requires is that you can pass the file name as an argument to the program.

Hi Jeanl,
It's been quite a few years but we corresponded about DVDSubEdit in the past.
Firstly -and once again- I'd like to say what a useful tool DVDSubEdit is and thank you for all the time you've spent on it and for providing it free of charge.
I've had an idea for a feature but I am not sure if it's even possible or not. Here it is...
One of the tasks I use DVDSubEdit for is to determine if there are any forced subtitles or not when making a DVD backup - I make movie only backups and manually set the audio and subtitle streams to be displayed using DVDShrink or IFOEdit. Sometimes movies will have captions such as a place and/or a date which are shown by using a forced subtitle. Eg. Something like 'Philidelphia Maximum Security Prison Hospital' is displayed by a forced subtitle on one of the Hannibal Lector DVDs (I forget which one). It's easy to set the subtitles as off and then not get the forced subtitle when making movie only backups because you know it's an English language film and assume no subtitles will be displayed. Likewise sometimes in an English language film there is just one scene with non-English dialogue which forced subtitles display.
To guard against this I use DVDSubEdit's 'open full domain' before backing up a DVD, and wait for it to read all the subtitles. Then I can use the 'Only show forced subpics' checkbox to see if there are any forced subtitles on the DVD and, if so, I can use IFOEdit on my backup to make sure the forced subtitles are shown even when subtitles are off.
DVDSubEdit's 'open full domain' takes a long time to read a full movie, often as much as 8-10 minutes. My feature request, which may not be possible, is to create a 'check for forced subtitles' facility. Clearly this is only worth doing if it is possible to check for the use of forced subtitles in a set of VOB files in a way that does not involve scanning the entire movie. So a quick check can be done, if there are forced subtitles then the 'open full domain' can be used to determine what subtitle settings need to be implemented for a movie only backup. [Typically using IFOEdit to edit the PGC command table and setting the correct subpicture stream to 0(Off) - 0 being the first subpicture stream.]
Anyway that's my idea. Let me know what you think. Many thanks and best wishes,
mattstan
PS. Thanks for the new version. :)

Well unfortunately, you really need to load a subpic to see whether it's forced, and for this, you really need to scan all the sectors, looking for subpictures packs. I looked for various ways to speed that up, but I haven't found anything that's both quick, robust and reliable (won't miss subpics). I'm surprised that it takes so long for you. The longest it takes for me is a couple minutes, for a large movie with tons of subpics...

Thanks for looking into it jeanl.
I didn't realize that 8-10 mins was so slow. It must be a VirtualBox related speed issue. I am a Linux user and because there are Windows programs I can't live without, and which do not run well under 'WINE', I use VirtualBox which runs Windows in a virtual environment on (in my case) Linux. Most software running in this environment runs just as well as it would on a native Windows install, some even has increased speed (Eg. DVD Shrink for some reason which I'm guessing is due to the filesystem I run, ext4), but some run more slowly. I suppose DVDSubEdit falls into the more slowly category.
Thanks again. Regards, etc.
jeanl
9th September 2011, 16:11
Yes, 8-10mins is very very slow. I'm just not sure why you're seeing these bad speeds, since it's mostly disk access that slows the opening (DVDSE looks at every pack, looking for subpics and nav packs). Typically, it's less than 2mins on my machine...

DVDSubEdit is a great tool I cannot live without anymore.
I'm currently authoring a big personal project of mine that includes subtitles entirely created by me (705 individual subpics) using an Aegisub script converted to SUP using avs2bdnxml and BDSup2Sub.
I need all the subtitles to be horizontally aligned in the middle, some are not because I created them in Aegisub with left alignment so that they are justified (it's absolutely needed, otherwise it looks odd). This "block" of left justified text is supposed to be aligned in the middle of the video frame and that's where it's getting really tricky. Here is a picture that illustrates what I'm talking about:
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/9325/alignthis.th.png (http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/9325/alignthis.png)
Btw, it's impossible to do this in Aegisub/ASS in the first place, as soon as you want a subtitle to be left justified it sticks to the left border. (Well you can still place the whole text manually but that's not going to be perfectly centered and it's very time consuming...)
Aligning this horizontally would be so easy to do in DVDSubEdit after authoring, first "crop subpic background" and then align subpicture in the middle horizontally (automatically), then apply to all.
Would it be possible to add a function that horizontally aligns a subpicture? It's all a matter of DCSQT x-coordinates as far as I know. It's sort of a feature request. :)
I'm currently struggling there. SubRip allows to crop and align in the middle but it's a big pain the butt and I don't get it to work properly.

I'm still working on that project (lol I know taking a long time). I have made an Excel spreadsheet which helps me calculate the X-offset to enter in DVDSubEdit but of course it still involves shifting every subtitle that isn't centered manually as the value depends on how long the subtitle is. There are about 200 out of 714 individual subtitles that are not centered due to "left-justify" but since I have both wide and letterbox subs, the number is doubled.
I would greatly appreciate the addition of this function, I would most likely need it for subtitles in future projects as well.

Hey jeanl, I'm looking to recompile DVDSubEdit to play around with it and I noticed that the GOCR sources you use looks to be about 7 years out of date from the latest source release from from 2010. My question is: have you made any significant modifications to the GOCR sources you link to over the vanilla upstream such that you could see any issues if I swapped in the newer source for compiling (obviously other than changes caused by the evolution of the code since your snapshot that would need to be taken into account)?
Also, will you be putting up the 1.5.2 sources? I don't see them on your Source Code page.
Thanks.

What do these error messages mean, and what exactly does DVDSubEdit in those cases?
From a quick look it looks that it drops some lines, ie some subtitles are completely missing....
The 20 stream should be completely missing from the VOBs, it has been removed with DVDshrink (without renumbering), if this is of any help ....

These error messages mean that the subpic pack was corrupted, and DVDSE was not able to make sense of it. This happens very rarely, and it's possible that DVDShrink didn't remove all the packs from that stream properly, so a left-over pack caused the error. in that case DVDSE would remove the subpic, so you'd be missing one subtitle (i.e., a single sentence on the screen, not the stream, of course)...

I added a "center" button to center subpics automatically. Send me an email at jeanldvd at free dot fr, and I will send you the beta so you can try it out, if you're interested.

I uploaded version 1.521 to the link below. The only difference is the new "center" button in the horizontal move area.

Thanks for the useful tips.
I have followed rOIZ suggestion and managed to select 'Gimp' as bitmap editing tool (see attachment 3). Now when I choose 'Edit subpic with external tool' 'Gimp' is launched but I get the message (see attachment 4):
<Opening of "/usr/bin/C:\users\utente\Temp\tempbitmap.bmp" has failed: cannot open '/usr/bin/C:\users\utente\Temp\tempbitmap.bmp' in read mode: non existing file or directory>
I hope my translation from Italian is correct.
Best regards,
Paolo
I have added a field in the ini file that allows you to specify the directory used to store the temporary file. It's not in the preferences, so you have to open the .ini file itself and edit the field (after opening the app and closing it once). In your case, you'd change the line to:
TempBitmapDir=/tmp
or something like that. Send me a pm to test the change if you're still interested.

Thanks a lot for adding the center button jeanl, much appreciated. :)
What would I be doing without DVDSubEdit? It has become vital for my authoring needs. One of my main uses is replacing blocky menu subpics with my own anti-aliased ones (well, as we're limited to 4 colors the anti-aliasing is not perfect but much better than none at all).
jeanl
7th October 2012, 03:38
Don't most menus have antialiasing to begin with? I've see a lot of that... Do you know that if you press on 'b' , 'p', 'e1' or 'e2' (the actual letters on the UI), the corresponding pixels will be shown (and only them)? Can be useful to see which pixel is used for anti aliasing, background etc.
Jeanl
TheSkiller

Some have anti-aliased menu subpics but I still see many that don't have it. Even the look of the subtitles of a feature is often very sub-par in my opinion and I'm talking about big budget Hollywood releases. Poor font and no PAR compensation and the most annoying issues to me.
But what I actually meant was I replace automatically generated menu subpics of my own authored DVDs with better "new" ones that I scaled in 24-bit before the conversion to a 4-bit bitmap, hence the quality improves, although technically there was some anti-aliasing in the original subpic (and because of that I don't even have to mess with the CLUT, all I need to do is import the new bitmap and save).
In my case it's like this: if you're creating a wide + PS (or LB) menu with DVDMaestro, you can only feed it one subpic (your high quality "wide" 4-bit subpic), but the PS or LB one it will create by itself from the wide one which will naturally give somewhat inferior quality on those automatically generated subpics. Those are the ones I replace after authoring with proper ones using DVDSubEdit, and without it I would have to live with crappy PS/LB menu subpics. :)
Yes, I know about that function to display individual pixels of a subpic by clicking on the CLUT's letters. Can be very useful.

I have an issue with the last version.
After a while the image changes from widescreen to LB, and the palette changes to automatic IFO. When I try to use the IFO CLUT it say that there's no IFO associated with the VOB. It never happened before. The DVD was reauthored with muxman and the subtitles come from MaestroSBT, if this counts.
Why is this?

"DVDSubEdit -- Version 1.52 - by Jeanl"
Done a bit of research and it seems that the movie has been shortened to 1 cell (PGC has 1 cell, the vobs are however intact). Therefore the "missing cells" behave as indicated.
I'll do some other tests today to see the exact sequence that produced this error. So far I could only notice that the processing of the freshly remuxed VOBs shorten the PGC.

Le me know if this does not happen with the previous version. I haven't changed anything that could cause that, but you never know...

I'll be more careful to remember the exact sequence. It happened to me twice, both after remuxing external subtitles with muxman and opening the vobs in DSE. All my tries today were successful ie no errors.

I've been working with a disc that has issues with navigation if you disable P-UOPs and try to skip ahead in some places.
Every step of the process I've been preventing software from stripping the P-UOPs, but using DVDSubEdit to edit colors and then saving it is stripping those codes anyway.
Is there an option to disable this? Is it a feature or bug?

Are you positive about this? I don't think there's code to remote the PUOPs in DVDSE! I'll have to double check...

I'm really sorry, I think the problem is elsewhere. I'm using VobBlanker first, and although Remove PUOP's are unchecked, it's still doing it.
I assumed it would work correctly and just went on to the next step. I apologize for wasting your time here.

It always worked fine, even on 8.1. Just before posting this, I actually used DVDSubEdit and closed it normally. After that, it just won't open again. Is it possible that some Windows component (NET Framework or sth) or something DVDSubEdit uses got corrupted and needs reinstalling?

Or it may be something bad with the DVDSubedit .ini file (which the program writes when it quits and reloads when it starts).
You should try to remove that .ini file.
In windows7 it's here:
C:\Users\jeanl\AppData\Roaming\dbdsubedit.ini
Not sure where that would be in windows8. Remove it (along with all other dvdsubedit related files) and try again. If you're lucky, that will do it!

Thanks jeanl! Same location on Win 8/8.1. I deleted DVDSubEditLastFile0.txt and DVDSubEdit.ini and it worked again so I'm happy :).
However, after working normally with it and closing it, it will not open again and crash. I delete the file(s) again and it works, but only once. Even if I just open and close it without working on any files, it will not open a second time unless a delete DVDSubEdit.ini. (leaving DVDSubEditLastFile0 there is not causing problems).

I suspect one of these entries is causing the problem. You can try to find out which one it is, by doing a binary search! Remove half of them, save the .ini see if it starts. If not, remove the next 1/4 etc.
It's possible that the mere presence of this file is what causes the issue (even empty) as it's possible that the functgion call used to read it is no longer supported...

Thanks again. Some quick tests: it does open with an empty .ini file. Of course the file is rewritten and it crashes again the 2nd time. Setting the ini file as read-only does not work, still crashes with all entries present.
This worked though: I deleted MainWindowPos and ScanWindowPos and set the .ini file as read-only. Now DVDSubEdit always works. Settings are not saved of course but it's not a major problem and can be easily bypassed. :)

OK then there must be a problem with the call. At the very least, I can put a try/catch around the corresponding calls so it won't crash the app if they fail, but I'm puzzled as to what's causing the crash... These are pretty standard calls...

I had the same issue as Weirdo yesterday. DVDSubEdit worked a few months ago and it just stopped working. Only thing that I could think of that changed was I did a system restore 2 weeks ago. I also am a Windows 8.1 user. I did the same "fix" as Weirdo where I deleted the DVDSubEdit.ini and it worked. Then the second time I opened DVDSubEdit, it just wouldn't open. Event Viewer didn't show any good information.
I did a windows update and that fixed the issue. The update was KB3000850 which is an optional update. Not really sure what was in it, but it worked.

Good to know... I have now migrated to windows 8.1, so far, DVDSE works normally, no crash, but when I make the next version, I'll try to put safeguards so it does not crash when making the suspicious call...

I'm adding subtitles (srt converted to sup) to a letterboxed dvd video. I want the subs visible when dvd zoomed in for widescreen, but would also like them bottom-justified, meaning a single line subtitle will be at the same height as the bottom line of a two-line subtitle. Is there a setting for this in Dvdsubedit? I seem to have adjusted the single-line height accidentally for another subtitle file.
edit: never mind, figured it out. Click "flush" and adjust the borders rather than just the subtitles.

I use DVDSubEdit just for detecting "forced subtitles" when backing up my DVDs (i.e. load ripped VOB into DVDSubEdit). It's very useful for the purpose. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and one feature which doesn't seem to work for me now is that when I load a VOB into DVDSubEdit, the dropdown in the "Subpic selection" section never seems to have any options in it except for "All Streams". Previously I used to be able to select an individual subtitle stream/language here and then tick the "Only show forced subpics" checkbox in order to see which streams contained forced subtitles, if any.
Is there something I'm overlooking? Or is it related to Windows 10? Or is it just something peculiar to the last several VOBs that I've loaded?
Thanks for your insight.

For the dropdown to be enabled, IIRC, DVDSE has to read the IFO files that are associated with the VOB file. Normally it just looks for them in the same directory the VOBs are in. So there could be a few things happening:
- There's no IFO file in the dir of the VOB
- DVDSE is not able to locate the IFO for some reason that's related to windows10...
I don't have windows10 so I can't reproduce your problem.... I would check whether opening the main IFO (VIDEO_TS.ifo) instead of the VOB helps...

Thanks for the prompt reply, which has allowed me to solve my problem. The problem was not to do with Windows 10, but rather the fact that (coinciding with my move to Windows 10) I've been using a slightly different naming scheme for my VOB files recently - I've started including the PGC number in the filename, for my own reference (like this: VTS_01_PGC_06_1.VOB), but this seems to interfere with DVDSubEdit's ability to autodetect the IFO file in the same folder - I suppose that DVDSubEdit looks for an IFO file with the same name as the VOB file (the same, that is, other than the final number in the filename), but since my IFO filename doesn't include the PGC number, DVDSubEdit isn't making the association between the VOB and the IFO. I've just retried it without the PGC number in the VOB filename, and DVDSubEdit successfully detects the individual subtitle streams as before.
Thanks again.
