DVDSubEdit has some very neat and advanced functions for this. I use them a lot on region 1 DVDs. Unfortunately, there a bunch of minor bugs or ommissions in the routines, which I hope jeanl will find the time to address at some point...

CoNS, I know that guide and how to remove that subtitles. But in my example are 2 different situations:

1.

JOHN: I'm leaving you.
Good bye!

If DVDSubEdit will remove "JOHN:" and "MARY:" we have a problem: we'll lose the dialogs and will have:
Hello!
Hello!
Which is not correct. Correct is:
- Hello!
- Hello!

In the second example is no problem.

With the actual features of DVDSubEdit, if I have this example:
JOHN: - Hello!
MARY: - Hello!
I'm removing manual (searching for ":").

These are difficult problems to fix though... Remember that DVDSubEdit cannot add any character, just remove! So I can't add a "-"....
Also, if you run into systematic OCR errors, you should send me the SUP file, and I'll take a look. It's usually quite difficult to fine tune GOCR to do the right thing (and preserve its performance on other subtitles!), but sometimes it's possible...

I don't have problems with OCR, because I don't use it too much. My problem is old (and I think you remember it): when moving the subtitles, some lines with some special characters are not moved at the same position.

Hey guys,
Here's a beta for you to test. There isn't that much new, but I've added the code that adds or removes a DCSQT. This will allow adding fade in/outs in the future, but for now, it allows you to turn an infinite subpic (i.e., one that does not have a second DCSQT with a stop command) into a finite duration subpic (simply by adding a DCSQT with a stop command). It also allows removing the last DCSQT (if it has a stop command) to turn the subpic into an infinite duration one.
To use:
- If your subpic does not have a stop command, the duration slider is disabled. But if you click on it, you're given the option to add a DCSQT with a stop command to allow adjusting the duration.
- Click the tiny button next to the slider to turn your subpic into an infinite one.

Give it a shot and let me know. You can't apply that to all or to another subpic (you have to do them all one by one). If it works (it does for me) and is useful, I'll add the option to the "apply to all" dialog.

This changelog reminded me of a problem I noticed earlier, but forgot to report...

I have a DVD with a subtitle track that has a subpic with a duration of 470 seconds. Obviously I'd like to fix that, but DVDSubEdit doesn't let me adjust the duration slider. It just sits there, stuck on one of the extremes (left or right, I can't remember which.) Bug?

Check:
- Is the slider enabled?
- Does the subpic have 2 DCSQT (you'll see them on the left side of the UI), with the second one with a Stop command?
- Does the UI say 470 seconds?

Hi Jean!

If I save the subpicture of a menu in ppm format, it gets the size of 720x573 pixels (PAL).
Thats absolutely correct.

But if I want to modify it, I have to align it with the background image.
It would be much easier, if you can automatically add 2 lines at the top (PAL and NTSC) and 1 line at the bottom (additional for PAL) in background color.

This can be an option.

Is it possible or get we conflicts when saving normal subtitles?

mmm, of course it's possible, but it's a bit of a kludge. The fact that it's 720x573 isn't a "standard" (the highlights don't have to cover the full screen, right?), so what works for this DVD might not work for the next, right? or am I missing something?
If so, perhaps it would be better to write a standalone little command line program that does what you want.

According to mpucoder the first 2 lines and the last line (only for PAL) can't be used for a subpicture. This is the maximum. But of course a subpicture can be smaller. Adding a fixed number of lines was not a good idea.

If I extract a subpicture with SubRip, I have an option to expand it to the full frame size 480 NTSC 576 PAL. The real subpicture remains in the correct place. The space is filled with the background color. The algorithm seems to be not too complicated and will work for all DVDs.

It would be nice to have a similar option in DVDSubEdit.

Nevertheless, thank you for this great tool as it already is.

OK I understand... You'd like to have the inverse of the "crop" feature where you can save the subpic as a full frame bitmap, with the subpicture placed exactly where it is during playback.
I'll put that in the todo list.

I couldn't find the DVD in question, but I have another with the exact same problem. This one has a subpic with a duration of 671.254 seconds.

In answer to your questions:

1/ It's the new version.

2/ The duration slider is enabled, but is stuck at the leftmost "short" position. The duration text box reads 671.254. If I try to move the slider, it stays put, but the text box changes to 671.300.

3/ The subpic has 2 DCSQT, the last one is a Stop (just like all the rest, in this stream.)

If I load the .SUP instead of the VOB full domain, the slider _is_ moveable. Just in case that's significant.

The search capabilities are a bit limited, I agree. Ideally the user should have a very flexible way to search/select subtitles based on various criteria... But flexibility is hard to implement...

That's a very good idea, but it's still not perfect (for example, you can't easily search for forced start with this technique...).

Here's a beta for you guys.
Version 1.384
- Fixed a crash that could happen in some cases (bug introduced in 1.381).
- Fixed a transparency problem in the display (fully opaque subpics were not displayed as completely opaque)
- Chose a better Y Cr Cb -> RGB mapping function, which yields a true white when Y=255 (Cr=Cb=0). Thanks r0lZ!

In addition, there's a couple new buttons "add fade" "remove fade" which are just experimental. They add a quick fade-in to the subpic, I did that just for fun.

Adding fades produces incorrect STM entries some times

e.g. I got

DCSQT: 1 -- Delay 0.011s (STM in DCSQ=0x01, should be 0x00 or 0x03)
another VOB
DCSQT: 5 -- Delay 0.410s (STM in DCSQ=0x24, should be 0x23 or 0x26)

225/64*n for PAL and truncate
3003/1024*n for NTSC and truncate

EDIT: I didn't realize the STM had to match a frame time, which is why I wasn't rounding off to the nearest frame. I'll add that.

Don't forget to truncate the answer, ie integer division
For NTSC (frames*3003)/1024
for PAL (frames*3600)/1024
Another way if you have a compiler that doesn't understand integer divide, or wants to round, is to shift right 10 bits, eg (frames*3600) >> 10

today i have posted a message asking for a way to use fade in fade out effect to subs just to learn yout latest release implements it. congratulations! that is so cool! because i had tried 1.37 and seemed very interesting. 1.384 and onwards will be even better for sure! afaik, only $$$ software could do that effect. now, there is an alternative.

Thanks for the message! I'm not too sure how many people are interested in these kinds of effects. They're not terribly useful in my view, but occasionally, there might be a time when you need to do that. Unfortunately, the current function can't be customized so it's still not terribly useful...

I saw the "Inf" button and... tested. :D But after pressing it I wanted to revert back the original duration. Can you make an Undo button or someting to give me back the original duration?

@Mtz: just click on the slider, and it will offer to put a duration back. Or click Ctrl-Z (but that reloads the subpic, so you lose whatever modification you might have made on that subpic).

Fade-out is possible, of course. But you're never sure you can implement it: the subpic pack needs to have enough room for the additional DCSQTs. They're small so usually it's not a problem, but occasionally a subpic won't have enough room to put either fade-in or out.
I intend to put an option for fade-in, fade-out, as well as the duration of the fade-in and fade-out...

Well, probably because the function to move subpics was originally created for VOB files (in which case it's a lot harder!). To do that in a sup is much easier, but you still need to do some error checking (make sure you don't move it before another one or something).
I thought there were better tools to adjust that kind of stuff in sup files, no?

I have a small bug (at least on my end) using DVD SubEdit after processing my DVDs using the Big 3 method. You can view the entire thread here:

The basic problem was that after running DVD SubEdit, it would render my DVD unplayable. I finally looked at the pre/post/cell commands in PCGEdit, and I realized that after processing with DVD SubEdit, all of these commands were erased in the main movie VTS. Is this normal, or did I do something wrong? The DVD played fine afterwards after I copied all of the commands back again

I really don't understand what's going on. I tried to replicate your problem, but I can't.
DVDSubEdit only modifies the IFO if you change the CLUT (color lookup table). Otherwise, the IFO isn't even touched. If all you did was move a few subtitles up or down, it should absolutely not save the IFO.
Which version of DVDSubEdit are you using?

Open Full Domain (main movie) -> Re-time selected Subpics -> Save all Modifications

I just tried it on another movie as a test and the cell commands were still in tact afterwards...I must have done something wrong when I did it before. Sorry to give you a scare!

On some episodic disc, I made the following steps to my favourite subpicture stream:
- decrease the transparency to 14
- adding fade at a few subpictures
- addind forced start at my favourite stream. Apply this last setting.
- save the DVD

When I reloaded the DVD, all subictures with fade was marked as hidden. Not showed in DVDSubEdit and not in the player. After increasing the transparency to opaque (15), saving and reloading again, all subpictures are OK.
Can you confirm this in a test?

You can try with any sample. I used PAL. Right now I made another test with a small custom created VOB, I made the same steps, but this time the modified subtitles are showed in PowerDVD, but in DVDSubEdit are hidden.

DVDSubedit shows the first frame of each subpicture. If you add fade-in the first frame is full transparent......:)

If you add a fade-in, the first frame is fully transparent. So obviously you won't see it. Use the drop-down DCSQT selector to go to the last DCSQT, it's fully opaque. The selector normally applies to all selected subpics.
