@jeanl
First of all thanks for your great tool. I recently started using it due to its unique bitmap editing feature and then also found that its OCR feature is much better that in other tools I had used.
Had 2 small problems (1.5 version) until I found workaround.
1.The first problem (at bitmap editing) was that if I didn't manually set different colors for auto-clut (manual setting for the forced 'auto' is not offered when export to bmp starts from ifo CLUT), then I had 2 same colors in auto-clut (the original ifo clut had 3 same colors with varying transparency) and then there was no way to separate patterns. It only started to work after I'd changed the default auto colors to 4 different ones. Not a big problem but maybe changing defaults for auto-clut (forcing all 4 auto-colors different) would be useful here?
2.The second thing was wrong time codes in .srt for the OCR-ripped subtitles (both in full-domain* and sup modes). As I can see in this page of the thread, another user mentioned a similar thing. I earlier had that problem in SubRip and didn't expect to find it in newer tool, so it even took me some time to find this out in the resulting mux.
It wasn't a constant delay, so retiming the whole stream didn't help. In a set of 515 lines the offset values were -1 to -3 seconds, while the original sups muxed back were perfectly synched. I tried 2 different tools with those .srt (TAW4 and SubtitleCreator) to be sure. Finally, I had to separately rip original timings from demuxed sup to empty .srt (SubtitleCreator gets time codes perfectly) and copy/paste every translated line to it. That did the thing.
* In full-domain mode there was an additional time code shift (about 4s) in the last 70 or 100 lines.
Do the latest modifications fix it (I used 1.50)?

Yes, I fixed this problem recently, but I haven't published the fixed version. Indeed if some of the colors are identical in the default CLUT, the import/export function does not work well at all.

I think it's possible that the updated version also fixes this problem. Send me a message at jeanldvd at free dot fr and I'll send you the latest version, so you can try whether the problem is fixed or not. If not, I'll take a look at it.

Thanks for your reply.
I tested time codes with 1.5023 and got the same issue. Looking at the values, they seem to come from 30/29.97 difference, as if the program derived time codes from 30fps, assumed instead of actual 29.97. The DVD length was 49:17, time code shift by the end was about -3 s. So probably this can be cured by framerate conversion (e.g. in SubtitleCreator). If the 1000/1001 is the actual reason (I didn't try it on PAL yet) it would be nice to have an option to type the actual framerate value before saving OCR results to .srt. BTW, this thread has just passed over 1001(!) post :) .

DVDSubEdit outputs time in non-dropframe (see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1124416#post1124416 for a lengthy explanation). So this means that for NTSC, the time output in the srt file progressively falls behind the "real" time (i.e., the time you'd measure with a stopwatch while watching the movie).
I'm not sure what's the proper way to output time in srt files. I could make that an option, so the user can select to use either non dropframe (the current default) or dropframe.

I see we can export srt's but can we import them as well? :)
r0lZ

Certainly not. DVDSubEdit is not a tool to generate subpics and/or mux the video. It can only modify the existing subpics in place, without modifying the overall VOB structure.

Version 1.51 of DVDSubEdit is now available here (http://www.videohelp.com/~DVDSubEdit/)...
A few improvements and bug fixes.
This is the change log since version 1.5
Version 1.51
Added retiming for sup files.
Added code to check that the auto clut does not have two identical colors, and abort editing with external tool if it does.
Added "invert selection" button.
Added proper handling of "Delete" key in OCR edit box.
Removed annoying warning about using autoclut when modifying subpics with external tools and colors are ambiguous, and you're already using autoclut.
Added option in preference to disable "CLUT warning" during bitmap export/import operations, when the bitmap only uses 3 colors.
Added an option in preferences to show the absolute PTS time, or the PTS relative to the first VOBU. It is customary in SUP file to display the PTS relative to the first VOBU. However, in many cases, the absolute PTS reflects the real display time of the subtitle in the movie.
Added shortcut Ctrl-Shift-E to edit bitmap with external tool.
Changed the default AutoClut colors so no two colors are identical.
Made a change to fix problems arising with PAL subpics in NTSC video.
Adjusted the area cut when removing words from subtitles.
The play buttons are now disabled when loading a sup file.
Sup files were sometimes created with a read-only flag. This is now fixed.
Fixed a bug that could cause a crash in some cases (e.g., only changing force-start to normal-start) when saving.
Fixed a problem that could cause DVDSE to hang when opening very short VOB files.
Fixed a problem with how buttons were displayed when not selected and not activated.
Fixed a few problems with start and end x/y values when exporting/importing bitmaps.
The user manual has been updated for this version.

Thank you very much Jean.
Has the "apply to all" bug been addressed regarding changing infinite timing to a stop command? By this I mean:
Answer yes when DVDSE asks if you want want to add a stop command. If you then Apply last mods and Apply last mods to all, the durations of the other infinites stay infinite.

That's because your most recent file list is empty. When you start using DVDSE, there will be a list of the files you last opened below the preferences item.

Version 1.51 of DVDSubEdit is now available here (http://www.videohelp.com/~DVDSubEdit/)...
Great, DVDSubEdit becomes even better!
Will you share the source code as well with us?
Last source I see is 1.50.
I guess, the 'drop frame' vs. 'non drop frame'
option for NTSC subtitles (discussed here in
September 2009) is not implemented yet. However
this shall not be kind of grouching, thank you
very much for the new version!

Please (re)read the forum rules, it is not necessary to post a question more than one time.
A delay of 1 millisecond can not be detected by a viewer since each video frame is on the screen for 33 to 40 milliseconds (depending on TV standard). But if you want to correct it MuxMan has a spinner to set the audio delay.

Hi everybody! I'm running DVDSubedit 1.51 under Windows 98SE.
Being aware of what was written in post #33, I'm trying to replace a subtitle stream with another (translating the text from English to Italian).
I use the IFO CLUT (attachment 1) and edit the subpics as 16 colors bmp with Corel Photo Paint 7 (attachment 2).
I choose the grey from the color palette on the right to write the text in Italian. The new text has no outline (attachment 3).
Then I import the modified subpic (attachment 4) and save all the modifications.
When I play the VOB file with VLC player the modified text is black (attachment 5).
I believe the new subpic data have the same size as the original one. Can anyone tell me what went wrong?
Thanks in advance.

mmm, this is strange. DVDSE shows the subpic in white, but the player shows them black? If you re-load the VOB in DVDSE, it shows the subpics in white, right?
I don't know what's going on, I don't think I've seen this problem before.

The problem can be fixed easily by changing the original black color in the CLUT to white (if there are no other subpic streans in the same VOBs.)
But Jean, that doesn't explain why the problem occurs. :(

Many thanks to both for the quick replies.
If I reload the VOB file with DVDSE the modified subpic is white. I will try rOIZ tip and let you know.

Well, if DVDSE shows them white, then I'm not sure what r0lZ's suggestion will do? The IFO CLUT shows them white, so why isn't the player showing them white? Puzzling. In DVDSE, they're shown white when the IFO CLUT is used right? (as is visible from the screenshots you showed). If by mistake you were using another CLUT, then that could explain it (for example, the auto clut). But that does not seem to be the case... If you cut a small snippet (with josoto's cutfile which you'll find in the vobblanker's home page) with a few subpics, then send that along with the IFO, I'll be able to reproduce the problem (perhaps). jeanldvd at free dot fr.
Another thing to try is to open the file in other player (mediaplayerclassic for example) and see if the problem exists.

No! Hardsubs are extremely difficult to remove. (In fact, you can't, but sometimes you can somewhat blur them.)

Hi,
I have a few curiosities.
Is it possible to use your software to extract subtitle from video_ts folder (with or without timecodes)?
If not is it possible to add this feature you think?
Sometimes I need to extract subtitles from dvds to write in the text form for people to read educational material.
Also, is it possible to add a back bar (background colour) on a plain text subtitle by using dvdse to make the text easy to read?
For example some dvd authoring softwares don't give you an option to automatically apply (but allows to do it manually) the back bar or back drop colour, and if one has several hundred subtitles, it becomes a tedious job to do them all manually.
It would be nice if dvdse allows to add one and then "apply to all". I understand it allows to change the colour and transparency of the back bar.
Another strongly desirable feature would be if it could allow to correct the subtitle text or at least allow to correct one or two typos.
I am sorry, may be I am being too demanding but I thought these things may not be too difficult for people like you to add easily or only with a little bit of effort.
Just think about it.
Thanks,
fulham

You can already do all these things, with some limitations.
You can convert the subtitles to text with the OCR, and save them to disc. You have to process each domain and each subpic stream one at a time.
You can often (but not always) add a black rectangular background around the subpics. But this is a bit tricky. You have to edit the DVDSubEdit.ini file (located in your %appdata% folder) and change the values of the CropBackgroundBorderX and CropBackgroundBorderY options. They specify the width and height of the border around the subpics, in pixels. I use 20 and 8. Then, launch DVDSubEdit, click "Crop subpic background" and change the background colour and opacity. Apply to all and save.
Note that if the background is already cropped, you cannot enlarge it, but most of the time, the background covers the whole image.
You can fix typo errors by using the OCR feature and editing the wrong subpics. But you can only remove characters. It is not possible to type something else. (This is because DVDSubEdit is not a subpic generator. It can only change some aspects of the subpics, in place.)
If you really want to change completely a specific subpic, you can save it as a BMP, edit it in any paint program, and re-import it.

Thanks for the quick response.
About the saving of the text, I knew about using ocr and then 'copy & paste' each subtitle's content on say word or something similar.
Am I right in saying that one cannot simply export the text from the entire bunch of subtitles together, right?
About the 'cropping' the back bar, are you talking about 'generating' a back bar against a plain text subtitle with no back ground and margin, right?
I will appreciate a clarification as I am not a computer person.
Thanks

Am I right in saying that one cannot simply export the text from the entire bunch of subtitles together, right? No, just click "save as .srt" to save all subpics in SRT format. (This is the text format used by many AVI/MPEG software players. You can easily edit it with a good text editor if you want to remove the time codes and keep only the text.)
About the 'cropping' the back bar, are you talking about 'generating' a back bar against a plain text subtitle with no back ground and margin, right?
The subpics are 4 colours images. Usually, the subtitle is white, and has a black outline. Often, a third colour (grey) is used to do some kind of antialiasing. The last colour is (almost) always completely transparent. It's that transparent colour that I call "the background". It covers usually the whole picture, but you cannot see it, as it is transparent. You can crop it with the method I have explained, to keep only a rectangle around the subpic. (The dimension of the rectangle is relative to the size of the subpic, but can be adjusted with the two options in DVDSubEdit.ini.) When the background has been cropped, you can change its opacity to use it as a "subpic highlighter", as it will cover partially the image beneath the subpic. I have used that method to hide the hardcoded subtitles with a subpic stream, or to make subtitles appearing on the credits more lisible. The method is easy. Try it, and you will immediately see if it suits your needs.
It is not possible to generate a real black outline around subpics that have no outline by default, as this would require to regenerate completely the subpic.

This is an example (using 20 and 8 for the crop values)
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/4916/subpicbackgroundexample.th.png (http://img641.imageshack.us/i/subpicbackgroundexample.png/)
The subtitle has a standard black outline, and I have added the rectangular translucent area.
Of course, if you set the CropX value to, say, 360, the entire width of the image will be covered.

I think r0lZ answered all your questions very nicely! One detail: the option to adjust the crop x and y values are in the preferences (so you don't have to edit the .ini file).

One final question - setting the x and y crop values to the one you have suggested, would the size of the subtitle (1 line vs 4 lines for example) make any difference?
Thanks.

1st February 2010, 02:38
Yes. The values of the X option is the number of pixels added to the left of the leftmost pixel and to the right of the rightmost pixel of the subpic. In my example, the rectangle begins at 20 pixels to the left of the black outline of the letter "L", and ends at 20 pixels to the right of the dot. Similarly, the border begins and ends at 8 pixels above and below the subtitle, because I have specified 8 for the BorderY option. Of course, if the subpic has only one line of text, the overall height of the rectangle is less than for 2 or 3 lines. As I have explained above, you can force the border to occupy the whole width of the image by specifying a large number for X, but it doesn't make sense to do it for Y, as you don't want to cover the whole image with a translucent rectangle! Also, the background disappears when no subtitle is displayed. (Take care: in some DVDs, there are some empty subtitles. The border will be displayed, even if the subpic is empty. Use the "hide subpic" button to hide them.)

A printscreen won't do it. Here's what you could do:
- Save the subtitles as a sup file (in DVDSE).
- Send me the sup file (jeanldvd at free dot fr)...
I should be able to take a look using the sup file.

If you're trying to open the DVD straight from the disc then that would be normal (a disc in read-only). YOu have to make sure you rip your DVD to your hard-drive first, then open that.
Also, If the vob files are opened by another program (like DVDShrink), DVDSE will complain that they can only be opened as read-only. Close DVDShrink then open them again.

Hi,
Somehow or other the second half of subtitles in my an hour long video clip appear about 1 second late. I want to move them forward but I have to apply the change to the whole lot which will make the first half to appear too early OR I have to move the second half (about 300 subtitles!) one by one which is going to become a hassle.
I can re-time those subtitles using 'subtitle workshop', but then I will lose all the changes I have made (italics, bold, underlines etc) within the dvd rendering software which also doesn't let shifting of multiple subtitles together.
Is there a (simple) way to make this happen in DVDSE?
Cheers!

You can select a specific VOB/Cell ID in the upper right corner, and apply the changes to all subpics of that cell only, then repeat the operations to the subsequent cells. With some luck, the second half begins at a specific cell, and that should be easy. Otherwise, you can split the cell with VobBlanker, or regenerate the DVD with your authoring program after having added a chapter point at the right position.

r0lZ is right, that's probably the easiest way to do it. Now, make sure you make a backup of your DVD before you do that, as you know DVDSE works directly on the VOB, and there's no way to undo a change. So if things get messed up, you'd lose all the work you would have done...

Thank you both r0lZ & Jeanl!
It did work almost perfectly, except that a few subtitles that were drifting more and more towards the end of the dvd needed to be corrected manually.
The entire project could be saved without any hassles.
Thanks.
BTW, I couldn't hear any sound when I played the dvd within DVDSE while editing - is that normal?

Any plan to support Bluray or HDAVC subpictures in mind?

I have a feature request. I'd like to see the addition of a resize (with separate x & y values).
Some titles can be too large or too small. Additionally, it'd be nice to tweak the y value if moving subs between PAL and NTSC DVDs.
I suspect this would be outside of what DVDSubEdit normally does, but still, it'd be a nice feature.
