the default is 5 (0.5) and 13, set to these values (and hit save settings)

I haven't been following the x264 development threads. Are those parameters assumed to be the best compromise for quality/file size over 0 and 0?

Can we upgrade the x264 version in AutoMKV with no problems?

Using 0.95c, lots of my DVD's (using the IFOs) and allowing for automatic resize, x264 can not process the files and cause the "unsupported input format DIB" error.

Cause is the following line in the movie.avs files:

last=movie.Crop(2,66,716,440)
fixed_aspect = 2.314242
out_width =
out_width = 720
#Aspect_Error = -2.288%
out_height = 576
#resizestart

As you can see, out_width occurs twice, and the 1st time without a value... Manually removing that line solves it, but of course I can't use "queues" that way :(

Thx!

@valnar

yes, should be "best average"

Can we upgrade the x264 version in AutoMKV with no problems?

usually yoiu can upgrade without problems

i have a mkv video with 1920x800 resolution.
1080p right?
Not exactly. 1080p being 1920 x 1080, although I guess you're dealing with a 1080p video that has had it's black bars cropped.
You can read upon on what 1080p means here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p), and scroll to bottom of the page for a visual comparison between different resolutions.
i want to convert to 720p, what's the equivalent?
to x800? in 720p?
In 720p your width is 1280, therefore to get your cropped height (h) that fits within the 720p resolution:
1920 / 800 = 1280 / h
and solve for h (as my maths teacher used to say all those years ago)

what i want to do is to convert to a dvd size. should i convert to this resolution or decrease bitrate?
Unclear if you're wanting to convert to DVD Disc size (~4.3GB) or DVD resolution (720x576 PAL / 720x480 NTSC) which incidentally isn't 720p but 576p/480p

what would be best result? to watch in 1080p
Don't ask what's best (rule 12 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) <-- time to re-read them again)
But having said that, it doesn't make sense to downsize a video that you are then going to upscale on playback - unless you need to compress it into a certain file size. If this is the case then nobody can tell you as it's too subjective and dependant upon your source (and probably playback equipment as well) - thus test, test and test again until you get something you're happy with.

the video : ([SS]_Mai-Otome_Zwei_-_04_(h264_AAC)_[44371F87].mkv) can get it from here : ...
I'd suggest as a minimum removing the link as this post & link seems to fall under rule 6 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm)

hi
i know 1080p is 1920x1080, what i meant was with the bars croped. the iquavelente. now i know.

i was refering to 4400mb, 720p, not a DVD , DVD. i want to see upscaled 1080p, because now instead of converting 720p mkv to 720 wmv or mp4, i'm converting 1080p to 720p, so it's way better.

Isn't it a rule 6 violation to help somebody with an illegally download file?

zacoz

@glb
Yes. However the questions asked in the hfmls's last post were not those asked in the previous violating posts (which I didn't and wouldn't answer even after having been edited) and there was no hard evidence they related to the same source.

I quite happy to be reprimanded should a mod feel I've overstepped, however my approach here seemed to be in line with previous situations I've seen on the forum.

@ Buzzqw: Found some bugs...

#1
happens @ AVI/XVID: loaded an input file, selected a configuration.ini (at the bottom of advanced settings tab) with a different xvid-profile (e.g. 2_pass_sap.xml). 'Advanced Profile Editing' tab then shows the standard xvid profile (2_pass_balanced.xml) no matter what there was selected before - and, for some strange reason, uses these parameters on queued jobs.

#2 (maybe a bug)
the '# of Threads' parameter in 'Advanced Profile Editing' cannot be saved with a settings.ini or configuration.ini. Saving it to the profile.xml does not work because the programm starts up always with #0 and overrides the threats-parameter in the profiles.

#3
The shutdown mode 'suspend' (0.95d), which should send the computer to standby-mode, does not work. However I'm very happy that this option will be a part of the programm. -Thanks!-

#4
Programm-settings saved to Lame@128 CBR: After loading an input-file the bitrate jumps to 112 and sometimes(!) the CBR parameter jumps back to ABR, too. --> This only happens at AVI/XVID. MKV/X264 works normal.

Wishes for the future:

##1 The option to deinterlace if the automatic interlace recognition comes to no result (you remember?). 'Save deinterlacing' seems to be a good name for this function.

##2 Enough time for you to continue this respectable work! You know, these babys kill every freetime :o

I also just saw that when AutoMKV defines a resolution of 716*432, x264 states that "width or height not divisible by 16 (716*432), compression will suffer" - could there maybe be a switch to "adjust" the resolution automatically so that it is a multiple of 16?

@Spreeni

1,2,3 should be fixed (and thanks for these bugs)
4 should happen only when changing container.. (and this isn't to change)

##1 The option to deinterlace if the automatic interlace recognition comes to no result (you remember?). 'Save deinterlacing' seems to be a good name for this function.

already present on todo list :)

@MichaelAnders
it isn't a big issue forcing overcrop, but doing so the Aspect Rate Error will be bigger.
I can suggest to confront encoding (do a crf 21 encoding) done with standard crop and with forced mod16
Check the file size and quality, afaik should be very very similar
EDIT: added compulsory mod16 autocrop

anyway added in todo list

@kretin
yea, just 2 night at home.. and i have sleep a total of 8 hours...

@AKarpo

every script as a <level> tag, just write here 3.1

Thank YOU for fixing them!

4 should happen only when changing container.. (and this isn't to change)

Hm, I never changed the container, I switched it to AVI/XVID, Audio to Lame 128 cbr and saved this as default setting. After importing an input-videofile the Lame bitrate jumps to 112 (and sometimes the cbr goes back to abr).
If I try the same with a different cantainer (MKV/x264) as default setting, everything's ok. Again, the bitrate jumps to 112 after loading an input file, not after changing the container (I didn't do this).
Anyway this is not a BIG problem for me. I just needs some additional clicks...:rolleyes:

a wierd little glitch that I found...

no matter what I set the encoding profile to, WM9 encoder randomly decides when to do 1-2 passes. Is there anyway to 100% guarantee only 1 pass? The only options i change are "specify bitrate" and "manual crop"

I also have a question about the changefps function...

most of the movies I have are 29.9xxx fps. is it possible to change the fps to 25 to save space? and would i use "convertFPS" or "changeFPS" (i want to save time too)

Is there a way that you can get the subtitle function to use .srt subs instead of .idx? I have a Popcorn Hour that I use to play my .mkv files and as of right now it does not support .idx/.sub files. But it does support .srt subs.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

@jason288
First of All Welcome to the Forum!

AutoMKV directly support only .idx/sub , that because is unable to OCR these subs in srt files.

BUT in automkv you can add external subtitle (using ... near subtitle list). So if you manually rip sub AND ocr it to srt subs you can add it without problem

Thanks for the answer. I will mess around and see what I can do. :)

On to some bad news. I think I have found a bug. When I am ripping TV shows I like to include the subs. If I queue up some shows, the subs don't get ripped. But if I do each rip by hand then the subs do get ripped. This is using the same settings. I have also checked in the queued jobs tab and it says in there that I have selected subs to be ripped. Any ideas about this?

Reproduced it again just now:

Resizer: None (I figured that "None" would just cut of the edges and not do anything else?)
Set Width Resolution: Automatic
Filters: None

source file are on dvd /ifo ?

@MichaelAnders
ok, fixed

BUT NONE resizer MEAN that no resizer are applyed , no at all

and Automatic as Width is to use when you want to do a compression test , so automkv will determine the "automatic" width and height... so .. using Automatic AND None is a non-sense.
If you want NO resize, just select NONE as resize.
If you want AutoCrop the black bars ONLY just select a Resizer, BUT as Width AutoCrop Only

You can only Inverse Telecine (http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm) if the original movie was shot at 24 fps (see History (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecine)).
If you load up your movie into DGIndex and save project... it'll tell you the percentage of FILM (if any).

It should be over 95% for best results. Some encoding apps automatically implement IVTC where possible.

On these forums we're not really big on what's better or best (rule 12) (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) .
It really depends on what you're looking for... better/best is meaningless outside the context of your personal needs/wants and desires.

I used Staxrip so long ago that I can't remember much except I found it did the job acceptably. Although I know after trying both (and other GUI's) I liked AutoMKV as it aligned well to my skill level, worked well "out of the box" so to speak while providing advanced settings I could grow into, and has very active development & support.

Most people here try out various GUI's and settle on what they like the best - which invariably is different than many others - if that wasn't the case, there would only be one actively used and developed GUI at any point in time.

Now that WGA strike is over there is need for 720p WMV encoding again. Some first impressions on the .95 AMKV:

What happened to "force PAR in avs"-dialog? Abducted by aliens? (xvid DVD rips too) .. WMV command line now shows proper time to go and so forth.. but hangs up hard after encoding! Have to kill it from task manager!

Or that's what happened 1st time.

I am running WinXP and when I run automkv where the destination file is on the network (my media server) it puts all the temp files on the network too. Which means it stops everytime it runs one of those vbs or batch files and ask me if I want to proceed.

Is there anyway to tell it to put the temp files on another local drive?

Ok, so it "should" be automatic now. I did a DVB capture encoding to xvid and at least that was not flagged so that either mpc or xbmc would show it 16:9 without forcing. Do you set the PAR for xvid or only container aspect ratio?

As for WMV, I'm just reporting what I'm seeing. The text window DOES hang when it completes. At least for me, for couple of different files. This happens when you get an error as well.

Encode is fine, just when the window should close it hangs. Pressing enter, CTRL-C or whatever doesn't seem to do anything.

Ed: Oh and the GUI for WMV bitrate in "original" seems to be broken. The slider doesn't change the bitrate.

Hm. Looks like I had (again) some problems in the filter chain. Grabbed latest Haali and ffdshow and adjusted settings in ffdshow. Funny how the filters seem to get out of whack even when you don't touch anything. I guess this time blame goes to bundled nero with DVD drive.

About this wmv hang. It does. Definitely. I tried it from command line with same result. I did some vbscript writing of my own recently, but I don't think I installed anything. I was looking for a free vbs debugger but gave up and just wrote messages to myself from the code..

I got the wmv script from the site just to make sure it was not corrupted with no change. I suppose the problem is something on my box or maybe just because I upgraded the cpu from A64 to A64 X2 and this is something that always happened with dual core..

If you are saying set your "output folder" to a local drive then I know that. But what I wanted was to keep my destination as my media center (which is another computer) but my temp (working) folder on my local drive.

I've played with the scripts trying to do this and it ended up not being reliable. It's easier just to move it afterwards.

I wonder if there is anyway to turn that protection off.

I'm having a problem with the de-interlacer.

Specifically, I'm ripping my anime DVDs to WMV, 2 channel, 90 quality. I've had no problems with sound or video, except that the built in de-interlacer isn't doing a good job. So I check "HQ Deint". This does a much better job at anime.

HOWEVER: When I save setting to use HQ Deint by default, the programs always uses the built in Deint, even though the HQ box is still checked. Also, if I set up a queue, with all episodes to use HQ deint, only the 1st episode uses it, and the rest use the built in deinterlacer.

Hi buzzqw!

I have finally managed to do anamorphic xvid encodes that even mplayer classic is able to play with the correct DAR. I use CQ profile, force PAR in avs by 10:7 and use FFmpeg with force muxing DAR in 16:9 for muxing.

But FFmpeg is not muxing the audio stream (i selected copy AC3 audio) from the main menu.

Is FFmpeg just not capable to do that?

Sorry if this has already been answered or i missed something in the changelog...

Best regards,

So about this WMV audio bug. It seems that the audio settings are only updated when you select "WMV" from the audio track pulldown. I made some 5-hour encodings that ended up stereo because you have to click again on "WMV" after you select "Original". Meh.

It shouldn't be necessary to use FFMPEG. You should get the actual xvid decoder and use it to decode xvids. In the xvid decoder settings you can specify which aspect ratio to use. Default setting is (I think) Auto/use external, which uses the container AR. Of course avi doesn't support aspect ratio so you want to change that to auto/use MPEG-4 which reads the AR from the xvid.

Thanks Barleyman,

I´ve tried all the muxers available in AutoMKV and the only muxer capable of signalling the correct apect ratio seems to be FFmpeg.

Why?

Because it writes an MPEG stream header before the actual file.

But i am missing the audio (copy AC3 from menu "Basic settings") and that is what i am asking for.

Where is the audio?

FFmpeg does not seem to be able to mux it.

Buzz?

PS: all actual encoders/decoders are used as suggested and i can still help myself with avimux gui because the FFmpeg AR signalling does not get lost in the final mux. But it would be nice to just "set it and forget it".

I have done a ton of anamorphic dvd-rips with ac3/dts audio. Actually it's more or less my fault the xvid anamorphic support is in automkv! I should just figure out how to make it work in the brave new "auto" world, since xvid doesn't know anything about accurate aspect ratios, it only knows four (?) different aspect ratios. But practically you only ever need 4:3 and 16:9.

As for audio, check the automkv wiki settings again and make sure ffdshow ac3 codec is enabled and that you do not have audio volume mixer enabled (it mixes audio back to stereo unless you have 5.1 setup!) .. Gspot is handy to check the job is done by the actual filters and codecs you'd think.

But if you insist using ffmpeg, I can't help you there. Never used it.

Ed:

I checked myself since I had not upgraded to .95 yet. Got a crash on the mkvmaudio_pip.vbs that was trying to run empty mkvmaudio_pip.bat

What's funny is that it says nobody pressed abort because that's exactly what I did!

So, yeah, seems to be something funky there. I had DSS checked if it makes any difference.

This seems to be a problem with the audio delay stuff and "copy original".
Handle in mux or use delay in soundout = automkv barfs on you.

If you use delaycut (the classic way) it seems to work fine.

Again, no guarantees whatsoever for ffmpeg :-)
