Thanks a lot for your answer.
Attached you'll find a log. I encoded a MPEG2 file (TV-stream) which I encoded earlier with AutoGK to a 360MB XVID-AVI but with AutoMKV I ended with 315MB again.
In AutoMKV I used SimpleResize (neutral soft) and AutoCrop Only and NO Filters.
I did a encode of a DVD-Rip (Heroes) some day ago with x264 and MKV container which had exactly the 550MB I wanted.
What's wrong here?

You may want to link to the download page instead of the direct DL as it seems not to change when there's a new build published.

What do you mean with drf analysis? How can I do that?
Within AutoMKV?

@QUEENFAN
It's a function within AVInaptic (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123076). Open the file in AVInaptic (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123076) and then select Statistics --> DRF Analysis from the menu.

Hi I've been using automkv for a while now and have run into multiple problems, I'll just make a list, thanks for the help, great encoding when it does what I want :)
1. X264 encoding, first I encode stuff to watch on my phone (I have coreplayer so just about everything works) and always test them on this pc first with media player classic, I resize to 320x240 with a neutral sharp filter and I change the frame rate to 15fps so it runs smoothly on my phone, but when I view the files on my pc first (To check its worked right) in an MP4 container the resizing works but the frame rate IS 15FPS but it plays it like 23.976FPS but the music plays at normal speed and in an MKV container the video is automatically stretched to 640x480 (its original format) when I start it with Media Player Classic, so basically the video plays at nearly 2x speed but if I encode from a 29FPS video it might aswell be 2x speed :mad:
2. When I select an MKV with 2 soundtracks in I can only select the files name so if it was example.mkv then the audio that I can select is example.mkv :confused:, is there any way to get it to recognize the dual audio? And as for the subtitles, it doesn't even find any.
3. If I encode to an MKV with xvid codec and load external subtitles and burn them (my phone can't recognize subtitles so I need to burn them) it tends to be very out of sync, I mean I'm getting sentences that should be 10 minutes into the video at about 30 seconds :confused:
4. If I select "Use Manual Crop/Resize and click preview vista tells me its stopped working correctly and won't let me do anything but close it.
5. And finally this isn't a problem but more of a question, is there any way to select more codecs than X264 Xvid and WMV?
Thanks so much for your help
P.S I use 2 Pass Insane Quality and to change the FPS I tick "Last line AVS Script" and write ChangeFPS(15.000)

@storm20200
1) automkv not change the framerate of audio if not requested. Even if you change fps of video , you MUST force automkv to change even the fps of audio. Go to advanced audio options and use the tempo option
2) with 0.96 b12 you can select audio tracks INSIDE a mkv container
3) maybe a problem of fps again ?, automkv don't change the timeline of subtitle, it will simply "add it" to video, using time reported on subtitle stream
4) be sure to have ffdshow installed, haali media splitter, and of course directx9
5) yes, in 0.96b12 you have divx, AND using hidden fuction (ctrl+9 and ctrf 10) you can activate the hcenc support AND VFW generic support (1 pass and 2 pass)
ps) you can use the appropriate changefps in advanced avisynth panel
thanks for you kind words!
@QUEENFAN
your drf is OK, that's mean that xvid haven't saturated.
question: maybe audio size get counted 2 times ? could you check?
you can also try using SAP Scure profile

Thanks I'll change the audio fps and see if it helps, is there any way to change the timeline of the subtitles? And I definately have haali media splitter but the tray icon doesn't come up till encoding, I'm pretty sure I have ffdshow because I have the k-lite mega codec pack with the 3rd of may update, anyway I'm trying converting to X264 now and will update with the results of changing audio fps
EDIT: I took a look at b12 and it only gave me the option of selecting no audio tracks or all of them, no option to pick an individual track for some reason, didn't think it was worth reporting it as a bug though
EDIT AGAIN: According to the K-lite site I have "ffdshow:
* ffdshow [revision 1937]
* ffdshow VFW interface
* extra plugins"
FINAL EDIT: I decided to encode to 264 without any audio and the video was 24:04 and is now 15:03, on media player classic it says "Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 320x240 23.98fps [Video]" but on the log it says "Activate Last line AVS Script: ChangeFPS(15.000)" so it should've worked, should I try convert FPS?......any help will be greatly appreciated

Have you tried using the Changefps functionality built into the Advanced profiles Editing tab - select Changefps and 15000,1000. On some testing I've done here this in itself doesn't fix it as when muxing the fps is set to the source fps. You can get around this though manually by editing the muxing.bat file in the temp directory and then running the bat file. There are others here with more experience in changing fps so hopefully they'll see your post and know how to address your need without this manual workaround.
Forget the rest of my answers - I see buzzqw has beat me to them.

Thanks I just seen your post, what are the chances of mine being at the bottom of the page :mad:
I'll try that see if it makes a difference, the reason I didn't use the change fps in the advanced profiles editing is because I had no idead what 24000,1001 meant so just went with last line avs script :p
EDIT: IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS YOU BOTH SO MUCH! Now all I want is to click the preview button without automkv closing, if you guys don't know why it would do that when I've got haali FFdshow and directx10 then I can live without it
EDIT: one more thing, whats better? 2 pass insane quality or anime-maxquality?

Just did two new tests with profiles 2_Pass_Balancedand 2Pass_SAO_Scure and the result had 314,3 MB in each case.

Hello,
I really like the program that you have all worked so hard on. Im playing around with it and have a silly question. I endabled QMTrim and picked Diego_7_5 just for grins as I like the filter it uses. I put the -u at 50 and the -c at 5 threshold AUTO. I kinda understand what QMTrim is doing but Im not sure how to get the -u and -c settings. Can anyone give me a good default? Did the AUTO take care of that for me? I can not see where it was applied in the QMTrim.avs file. Thanks
buzzqw

threshold value set how is the "weight" of filters are distribuites across the movie.
the qtrim use 7 levels of filtering from the lightest (could be even a sharpner) to the most denoising.
With a distribuition of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 (total 28 point), you will have that 7/28 of film will have applied the most denoising filter, 4/28 will have a medium filtering, and only 1/28 (less then 4% of film) will have a light filtering
With "Auto" settings, automkv will compile the distribuition (from the no needed denoise 5,4,3,2,1,1,1 , to the most needed denoise 1,2,3,4,5,5,4) computing the compression test made.
So if the compression test/analysis (so i suggest to run a full compression test) reveal a very comprimible movie, automkv will apply a weak denoise ( example 4,5,4,3,2,1,1 here near 50% of movie will be compressed using the first of second filter) BUT on very low CT will apply a serius filtering approach.
about what threshold applyed on automatic setting .. i added in log the info, thanks!

Buzzqw,
Thanks for the explanation of how QMTrim works. I used the Full Compress, Auto for threshold and -u 50 -c 5 with the light_grain_denoise.lvl, this time and I really liked the results. Does using a cfg(eqm_avc_hr.cfg) with the QMTrim hurt or help? Did I overdo the -u setting I noticed that the AUTOMKV choices were 5, 15, or 25. I think I read in one of the many articles about this program that 50 was good. :)
thanks for answering my questions your the best Buzzqw.

Wow, I can actually post now. Been waiting 5 days... Crazy rule. Most of this stuff is way over my pay grade but I've read all 39 pages and learned a lot. Anyways, I need some help with settings for changing HDTV mpeg2 files that I recorded OTA to MKV. I've played around with different settings and filters and usually, the encoded MKV file is larger than the original! What I'm trying to do is shrink most of the HDTV shows that I have recorded to about 1/2 their current size. ABC and FOX are 1280x720p and NBC and CBS are 1920x1080i. So, can anyone give me a few good starting point settings that will work with these recorded tv shows? I think shrinking the 1080i files to 720 is a good first step, but I'm not quite sure how to do that. Thanks!

Hello,
I want to encode movies with AR 16:9 to XVID/AVI or x264/MKV with anamorphi encoding (Advanced settings) and to my understanding I should use option AutoCropy Only (Set Width Resolution) together with NONE (Resize filters) but whenever I choose AutoCrop only theres's a resize filter selected and option NONE not possible.
Is this a bug or am I wrong ?
I want too keep the 16:9 AR in my encoded movie and want anamorphic encoding too.
What settings do you use for 16:9 sources if you get best quality and keep AR???
Thanks a lot in advance.

@speedfrk
try using a 2 pass profile and specify the disk settings, don't use quality profile or unlimited file size
usually the default values are good
@QUEENFAN
you can achive AUTOCROP and NO resize only by selecting in advanced settings Manual Crop (and write down the value) AND in main panel NONE as resize.
AutoMKV whenever autocrop will resize for keed the good aspect ratio

Thanks for your quick answer.
Concerning the encode quality is it better to autocrop with resize (how can I then keep AR 16:9) and without anamorphic or Manual Crop AND in main panel NONE as resize?
I want to keep AR and get best possible quality for my encode.

Thanks Buzz, that seems to work well. The mkv file is still very good quality but a little softer than the original. Is there a filter I should use to sharpen them? Here is another question- one of the local stations broadcasts movies in DTV but it is not HD. So the format is 4x3 with pillarboxes. They always seem to have a white staticy line at the top which needs to be cropped off as well. Since these were originally films but are now broadcast digital what are the best setting to use to convert these? The files are huge- typically 14GB for a 2 hour movie. Here are the typical properties of the mpeg2 file:
Video: MPEG2 Video 1920x1080 29.97fps 65000Kbps [Video]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 448Kbps [Audio]
Subtitle: DVD Subpicture [Subtitle]
In advanced, should I set the deinterlacer properties to film or just leave it auto?

autocrop with resize will guarantee exact AR, but only with manual crop & resolution you can keep whatever ar/anamorphic you want

If I choose to resize to 1280x720 with no cropping, it works. If I do any cropping, it never outputs a file... just a log which I will copy below. Suggestions?

You need to use even crop numbers - change your 3 to a 4 and it'll probably be ok. You will note that the box you entered the 3 into would have been coloured red - this is to warn you the value will cause problems.
Note that some filters also require your cropped output size to be mod16 - although in this case you've selected NONE as the filter so should be ok.

With '..autocrop with resize will guarantee exact AR..' you mean that if source has 16:9 the destination will have 16:9 AR too?
Do I have to enable anamorphic encoding then?
I can't, because I have to decide wether doing autocrop/resize or anamorphic encoding, do I?

Yes and no !
Only an 'original' anamorphic will absolutely maintain 16:9 ... hence 100% original anamorphic !
Anamorphic with cropping will change the DAR slightly (less black stuff... same picture AR)... but still 99% original anamorphic !!
Any resize will change the DAR ... but 'autocrop with resize' will guarantee the correct AR on playback ... now only 1% original anamorphic !!!
It's all good.

And how would YOU encode a 16:9 TV-Series DVD-Source?
Anamorphic with cropping or autocrop with resize?

On movies that are originally AC3 3/2 384, what is a good bitrate to choose when transcoding to x264? I have been using 256 but if there is a "point of diminishing returns" bitrate, I'd like to know what that is. Same on the video part- I know that it is all subjective and what looks good to one person is too low quality for someone else, but if there is a general consensus that "xxxxMB/sec" is a good balance for quality vs size that would be a big help since it takes a LONG time to transcode some of these movies!

And how would YOU encode a 16:9 TV-Series DVD-Source?
Anamorphic with cropping or autocrop with resize?
Well... I feel that anamorphic encodings produce fractionally better quality (see post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1097959#post1097959)).
Hence, I go for the (resized) 99% original anamorphic and crop out black matte or ugly edges.
However, black matte causes a neglible filesize penalty.
That said, I do very few encodings and so I take my time, retry, and redo untill it's perfect. I'm very hands on... to the point of encoding the audio with BeSweet/Light (HE 90 kbps profile) and muxing manually.
If your 16:9 TV-series on DVD were Band of Brothers I would take all care that it deserves.
It's all good !

Well... I guess DivX have been trailing the X264 community for so long... that an entry with H264 is quite exciting.
It might even stimulate some competition... DivX have always monopolised the home/amateur encoding market !
Lastime I checked (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1091265#post1091265) MainConcept_H264 was outperforming (quality/filesize/speed) X264 by 5 or 10% (fairly substantial).
Perhaps X264 needs a little help with it's assembler (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1143823#post1143823) routines.
Hopefully, I wont have to lend a hand with the machine code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_code) !!!
X264 needs a little help from it's friends !!

I converted a movie- National Treasure- that I recorded off TV and the quality is excellent. The original was 1920x1080i and about 14GB. I converted it to 1280x720p and it is about 8GB. Even on my 1080p TV, it is virtually indistinguishable from the original except for one thing- The problem is that when you watch a scene where the camera pans across an area you see definite stutters. This is most noticeable if the camera is panning across a skyline or landscape. I have seen posts on other forums about this problem but no one seems to have a solution. Any suggestions for what to try?

Hi buzzqw
Thanks
I also noticed that there is chapterextractor included in the package. I presume that this can be used to, funnily enough, extract chapter information, however once I have used this and saved the resulting file, how do I then import that to AutoMKV to add it to the rip, or must I physically use the Chapter Editor to manually enter chapter points.
Sorry for all the questions, however i'm new to all this, but willing to learn

Buzzqw,
I have been still playing with the qmtrim and I do not understand something. If I use the qmtrim lets say for the light all around denoise, I get a file that is for example 17mb. If i disable the qmtrim and use filters that approximate the same light denoise I end up with a file that is significantly smaller say around 10mb. I was wondering if Im doing something wrong with the qmtrim -u =50 t=5?
Is there a way to import the chapter text file such as one made with dvddecryptor?

Buzzqw, first I would like to say the work you have done is amazing. Bravo!!
Ok, I seem to be having a problem when encoding... this is what I do:
I have a bunch of VOBs that make a complete movie, like VTS_01_1,vob, etc to whatever number there are. So, I encode each to WMV, then use a joiner to join the full movie together so its all in WMV. Then, I need to split the movie into its scenes, so I split it into X amount of scenes. This works fairly well. The next part of the process, I need to encode the scenes from wmv to flv, but 1\2 the time it takes FOREVER, and im talking upwards of like 45 mins just to analyze the movie. This is nothx to me, and I was wondering what I have done wrong? Here are some screens:
----
here is log of how far it gets before it goes SUPER SLOW, and im talking < .1 fps

automkv on ifo input will automatically try to extract the chapters
on non ifo source (like single vob or mpeg..) you can manually load your chapter file (extracted using chapterextractor) or create it

What is the easiest way to find out if your mkv or mp4 is using VFR?
Regarding mkv I just drag and drop it on to VirtualDubMod and if it argues about the frames, I assume its VFR, but I don't know how to find VFR for mp4

How to recognize vfr content - mkv/mp4 (http://avisynth.org/VariableFrameRateVideo#recognize-vfr) (see also Avisynth MediaWiki (http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page)).
