Im having a problem with my nero sound. It is very weak and echoes kinda of tin can sounding. I thought I had read somewhere that there was a .dll I was needing to help correct this problem. Can anyone be of a bit of assistance. I have recently changed computers and OS (Vista :( ).

I had the same problem (xp pro) so I just use the original AC3 sound. Works well.

Hello
Quick question for a noob:
I performed an encode using the Constant Quality profile and left it at 18. Then I did the exact same encode but set it at 17. The filesize with 17 was smaller and quality poorer. I thought the LOWER quality rate meant BETTER quality?
Thanks so much

better to post logs of the two encode
and yes 17 is better then 18

Hi, using autoMKV for encoding mpeg video, I've a problem with the XviD codec: at the end of encoding a message appear (message from virtualdub) I use the recomanded xvid codec, with other version I've the same problem.
http://imageshack-france.com/out.php/i134618_Image2.jpg
Anyone can tell me why I've this message?
AutoMKV work good with h.264 and very fast!!! but I want xvid too :)

Hey buzz, I have a question. I have a bunch of HD m2ts and movs that I want to transcode, but I'm not sure if AutoMKV supports m2ts...
anyways, what I want to ideally do is encode them to WMV using the WMV9 codec, but I was wondering if there was a more efficient way to encode it? Maybe using a different codec \ container? I want to try to keep the filesize reasonable but the quality still as close to HD as possible. Thanks man :)

I've transcoded several movies I recorded off TV (HD mpeg2) to mkv and I've gotten the setting down that give me a good balance between size and quality. So I'm lovin this program! Thanks buzzqw for all your work/help. But now I want to convert most of my stuff and so I was wondering if getting a quad core cpu will help speed things up. I'm using a dual core C2Duo at 3 GHz and it still takes 8 hours on some movies using the 2 pass balanced. Does autoMKV support more than 2 cores? Also, the new ati and nvidia graphics cards supposedly support h264 encoding in hardware now. How will these cards work with autoMKV?

To answer the encoding question: yes, getting a quadcore will help improve times in most cases. A Q6600@3.6 on good air cooling (like a Core Contact Freezer from sunbeamtech) will destroy your C2D @ 3.0. Most of the 45nm @ 3.0 will also be a lot faster of an encode. As to the nVidia \ ATi, you would have to specifically code for those applications, using CUDA or whatever they use. There are a VERY SELECT few apps that use videocard to help encode, and as to their names im not even sure. Hope that helps.

Yah sure ,quad core... or even quad(quad core) will speed things along pretty nicely but using a CQ-crf (Constant Quality) profile will practically double the speed of your PC all by itself. You may get a huge swing in filesizes from movie to movie... but CQ let's X264 be all that it can be.
Strictly speaking, AutoMKV doesn't even support hyperthreading which is all good... since X264 does all the real work and it supports as many cores as you can throw at it !
However, I wont vouch for X264 if you have a Road (http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/hardware/soa/IBM-breaks-petaflop-barrier-with-PS3-and-AMD-chips/0,130061702,339289730,00.htm)run (http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/extreme_machines/4267979.html)er (http://www.daniweb.com/blogs/entry876.html) stashed in your basement garage.
As to GPU encoding support... we're all waiting for some bright spark to port implementation into X264 (maybe DivX (http://labs.divx.com/node/6535)).
It's all good !

Cool, thanks! So which CQ profile do you recommend? I tried a few test clip and most of them came out larger than the original.
Another question- A movie I recorded last night has a frame rate of 59.94. Here are the stats-
Video: MPEG2 Video 1280x720 59.94fps 15000Kbps [Video]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 448Kbps [Audio]
Subtitle: DVD Subpicture [Subtitle]
When I transcoded it to mkv, it still kept the 59.94 frame rate, but most movies seem to be 29.97 or 23. Is it necessary to keep that high a frame rate and is there a way to set it in autoMKV?

Ive been trying to weeks now to get automkv to work properly.
What I am trying to do is to convert .mkv files into wmv movies (HD) with 5.1 sound.
So far Ive not gotten any good results and I guess Im on my final attempts now.
At first I had problems with a error message and no sound. I managed to work past this.
But now Im completely stuck! Atm. My problem is that the sound is out of sync, its in stereo not 5.1. Ive read through the guide in the automkv wiki regarding this problem but the advanced audio function does not work at all. First off there is no setting channels for wmv and secondly, it wont save anything when I press "ok!" There was something about ffdshow being able to encode wmv 5.1 but this was a bit vague for me to understand.
Could any1 point me in the right direction?
Sorry if my post seem abit short, but Ive got a post on this forum already so I didnt really want to spam this place with the same information.

I have followed the instructions at the beginning of this thread and everything seems to go ok. The job finishes, there is a twemp file but no actual movie file. I've even searched my hard drives and nothings there. What am I doing wrong? I don't get any errors whilst processing either. I'll try again and save the log file this time and post it.

Another question- A movie I recorded last night has a frame rate of 59.94.
The default value of 18-CQ-crf is near-perfect (sometimes 17 is better). I've had gr8 success with Q20... but even Q22 - 25 can work pretty well depending on your demands (higher values = less quality, smaller files).
I don't think any movies have a framerate of 59.94 ! Some camcorders record at 60 fields per second (2 fields = 1 frame) which is equivalent to 30 FPS.
That said, 60 fields is 'conversion-friendly' and easily converted to 30, 25 or even 24 FPS.
It's all good.

On Advanced Profiles Editing try setting "ChangeFPS" and "30000,1001" or "2997,100".
I'm in PAL Land but have stations here that transmit supposed HD in 720x576 but at 50 fps instead of 25 fps - I use the above to change this down to 25 fps using the above process.
@ikonfokkah
0.96beta12 is the latest version. As you're posting in the 0.95c thread, Ajax_Undone assumed you were using it.
As to the advanced auto options, they are saved when you press OK, but the next time you go back into them they are reset to the defaults. I know it can be a bit annoying if you want to check what you've set, but it's functionality that buzzqw specifically wants.
Sorry I can't help with encoding to WMV as I never use it, but I do know that it's appears to be the most problematic based on posts here.
@zom414
You're right, we really need to see your log to help locate the problem. Although there may not be any error messages in it, there can be telltale signs for those familiar with some of the common issues encountered.

I converted a movie last night using 17 crf and set the output size to 1 DVD-R and the file came out 12G (the original movie was only 7G!) So I'm doing something wrong. But the quality was great:) Does lowering the framerate to 30 from 60 reduce the file size by half as it seems it would? I've learned that a lot of this stuff is not intuitive.

Not really sure, but there may be limits to achieving your desired filesize if your crf is not "in the ballpark". Buzzqw may be able to provide a clearer answer.
Lowering the framefrate from 60 to 30 would considerably lower the filesize, but from my experience it's not necessarily by half.

TV recorded material is weigh-less than pristine... certainly a level or 2 lower than DVD releases.
That said, CQ 17 is really only geared for the 'best of the best'... for all else, look lower down the line !
It's not that you've done anything wrong... but CQ needs a degree of 'trial and error' before you get it right firstime !
Try again and I'm sure you'll be emminently satisfied with the results.
It bodes well for your encoding into the future.

When I set the framerate to 30, the output mkv file was messed up- people were walking too fast and the audio was way out of sync. So that doesn't work.
From what the others have said, I need to try a much lower crf value. 17 was just what was already selected and since I don't really know what I'm doing yet, I just left it alone. Someone really needs to write a guide with some typical scenarios and starting point settings.

If changefps doesn't work, then you may like to try selecting assumefps in the dropdown (I've seen this suggestion posted by others in the past if changefps is not successful - no personal experience).
For Digital TV recordings I use a crf of 20 (for movies - good quality) to 22 (for tv shows - slightly lower good quality).

I don't think asume fps () (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=85026&highlight=assume+fps) will actually reduce filesize since...
AssumeFPS filter changes the frame rate without changing the frame count
ChangeFPS changes the frame rate by deleting or duplicating frames.

I don't know of any HD movies on dvd... I record all of my stuff from OTA broadcast TV. Some of it is very good quality and some is not so good depending on how the TV station broadcast it- 720, 1080, bitrate, etc. They all seem to be compressing it more and more since the file sizes for the same TV shows are lower now than a year ago. That said, you can get some very good stuff if you can record OTA TV. If you live in a metro area, you can usually get perfect reception of the big networks with a small uhf antenna and a usb tv tuner like a Pinnacle HDTV Pro stick. I also have a couple of ati HDTV Wonders in my desktops. I use video redo to edit out commercials- it is fast and easy plus it is supposed to get h/x264 support soon. Free trial, but well worth the money.

Hi have a variety of movies that contain multi-angle vobs. When I load these in AutoGK it askes me to select the desired angle. However, in AutoMKV I do not found a way to select only the desired angle. I know that it is possible to remove them using pgcedit and VobBlanker, but I typically notice the problem after the movie was compressed, on my PMP, and I am off on a plane somewhere without anything to watch. Is there a way to make AutoMKV recognize multi-angle movies and allow me to select the desired angle, or atleast warn me that there are multiple angles and the rip may not turn out as desired?
Cheers, Mike

Well, I converted another movie and used both 2 pass balanced and crf at 22 to compare quality. As far as I can tell, they are the same quality. But the big difference is file size. the crf conversion will not let you pick an output file size so you can't set it to 1 DVD for archiving. It just comes out to whatever size it needs for the quality you pick. But, it is MUCH faster than 2 pass; I guess because it is only using a single pass. Has anyone else done experimenting with this and come to any conclusions about which is better?

Strictly speaking, CQ-crf should have better quality overall.
The 2-pass keeps an eye on filesize foremost and quality second... the result is that some areas will be fractionally better while others worse...
CQ will be consistently equal.
Of course, if you're encoding HD material and want an exact DVD fit... 2-pass is the only way to go.
I've been encoding 3-part movies (Lord of the Rings I,II,III , Beverley Hills Cops I,II,III , etc...) or a series... into one 10 GB file (+/-) ...
then storing on HDD untill I can burn to Blu-Ray.
It's all good.

Any ideas why my quad core cpu (Q6600) will only use 40-50% while encoding when it used to use 100% all the time? As you might guess, this really slows things down! My old dual core athlon is faster now. I have verified that it isn't the system or cpu by running benchmarks that use all 4 cores 100% with no problems. Is there a setting I might have changed without knowing it?

OK, I tried this and it didn't make any difference. It does use all 4 cores, but just won't use more than about 40%. So it is very slow. When it was using all 4 at 100%, it was encoding an entire 2 hour movie in about 6 hours. Now it is about 13hours. I'm going to try deleting all the the autoMKV stuff and re-download it and start from scratch. Since it doesn't use an installer, there shouldn't be anything in the registry, right?
EDIT- I deleted the old autoMKV folder and downloaded a new copy and it is back to using 100%. So somehow I must have changed something without knowing it. Funny thing is, I don't know what it could be. All I've done is change from balanced 2 pass to constant quality and tried different sharpening filters. So "maybe" it is a bug.

Thanks- it really is fast doing encoding compared to my X2 Athlon. As the prices keep coming down, they will become more mainstream. As it is now, there really aren't that many desktop apps that can use it. But audio and video encoding can use all that you give them and a few games can use multi cores too.

I am new to AutoMKV and have started playing with it to convert my DVD's to MKV's for playback on a Popcorn Hour. I rip the DVD's with ripit4me and then run the vob's through AutoMKV keeping the original audio track. Some of the movies convert fine and play great, but on some the audio is out of sync. On most I notice the audio is ahead of the video by a few seconds. I have tried some of the suggestions from previous post like Use Delay Cut on the advance tab but nothing has helped. Anyone have a suggestion on how to re-sync the audio to the video that is not to complicated or a link to a step by step guide.

It's a good idea to get into the habit of always manually selecting the exact output width and height that you want.
(And it's a necessity for those, like moi, who prefer to create anamorphic output files to be DAR corrected later with MPEG4modifier.)
==//==
Has development of this GUI now ceased? I haven't seen Buzz for over a week, and nothings been going on with the beta for a couple months now. (AutoMKV really, really, really needs its filter base updated with newer degrain and debanding tools.)

So when are we going to see an update to AutoMKV? I've been messing around with other tools and the newer x264 has far better quality than the SVN release included with AutoMKV. Particularly in the area of AQ. In fact the AQ settings in the newer releases of x264 are completely different. Macroblocking in dark areas is almost completely gone with the newest x264.
I realize life has intervened but do you have any idea when you'll be able to pick back up?

If you looked into the forum, you'd see the topic ''AutoMKV 0.96 beta"... So as there is no way to know when bugs will be fixed, only time will tell when the next ver is ready.
Now I have a problem with 0.95c: I'd like to encode in h.264 using a baseline profile, but as I could not find one in the droplist of available profiles, could someone please send me the file for baseline ?

In some cases, The result has horizontal lines just like this picture below.

Could anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
I've tried Progressive+HQ in deinterlacer option but it still has the same result.
Here is my log.

BuzzQW, how do I use the command line if I wanted to use the snow codec through ffmpeg
Can I put this in the add to line space?
vcodec=snow:vstrict=-2:vpass=1:vbitrate=$B:pred=0:cmp=2:subcmp=2:mbcmp=1:qpel
Also by using the ffmpeg option what is disabled, just the other codec like xvid and x264 in the main window?
thanks

automkv don't support directly snow, i can suggest to use ffmpeg alone (aka don't wait next update)

I found your autoff and like it for ffmpeg work better than automkv, just trying to figure out all of the various settings and what they mean for Lavscoptions.
