You're right. When I think of Xvid I always think of AVI container. I was planning to add that you could probably use Xvid with MP4 container but then you can't select the iPod.xml profile. In which case, you might have to create your own profile that works.

Just a quick question which I probably already know, but does this mean:

11:14:36 Unable to determine movie properties , switched to DirectShowSource
11:14:37 Unable to determine movie properties with DirectShowSource, switched to FFmpegSource
11:14:37 Unable to determine movie properties with FFmpegSource. Now analyzing with MediaInfo

That I should install FFdshow or DirectShowSource plugins? Just a little confirmation.

EDIT: Well, I just download Sherlock The Codec Inspector and it told me that I have the decoders for just about every format out there, so I don't know what the deal is.

From first post in thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1096412#post1096412)

Compulsory:

A recent build of AviSynth 2.5.7 http://downloads.sourceforge.net/avi...0&big_mirror=0
The XviD Koepi Build http://www.free-codecs.com/download_...hp?d=1312&s=52 , is needed for the YV12 Decoder!
FFdshow as decoder http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffd...4&big_mirror=0
Haali Media Spitter (for MKV input) http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe

So that reads like a YES to me.

@igalencar

popcorn hour ! great i want one too....

btw, if you ask me, PCH can play iso, vob, ifo anything out
of the box, so it might be more easy just to rip the dvd's
to file or mount the iso's instead of encoding them ?

Yeah, but 300 DVD's at 5-6 Gigs a hit is over 1.5TB, so the space savings of encoding to x264 really start to make sense.

Guys .. thanks for the reply i have reinstaled Avisinth and it worked great.
but now i got another problem, i am riping also from the dvd portuguese subtitles, but wehn i put in the PCH the subtitles does not playes only a message that the subtitles are not suported.
how do i get the subtitles embeded in the mkv to be suported.
PCH suports srt, .sub, .smi and .ssa, subtitles formats.

PCH suports srt, .sub, .smi and .ssa, subtitles formats.Subtitles extracted from DVD are image-based .idx/.sub. This is different from text-based .sub. So unfortunately, the PCH doesn't recognize subtitles from DVD. I found this thread here: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/viewtopic.php?p=27279

It's possible to convert idx/sub to a text based format but I find the process quite painful (very slow and time consuming if you want it done correctly).

If you always watch with subtitles then what you can do is "burn" the subtitles right onto the video. In the Advanced Settings tab, under Muxing Options, you can check Burn Subtitles.

Havent been here for a while and recently downloaded and installed this. Couple of problems I am having I wanna report

1
I used to use Autogk which worked fine on a 7.89 GB movie with anout 3mb missing in my movie. It ignored this part of the movie and ended up with the whole movie converted. Automkv converted the movie, however it ended up with 2.14 hrs of the movie whereas the movie was about 3 hrs. I suppose its due to missing information. But I wanted it to continue ripping the DVD to MP4
2
The crop function shows me I have cropped the image right but it ends up with quite a bit of black bars being left.
3
some error message comes up just when its about to mux the final video and audio with virtualmod. saying
" The function deletecomments was on a sream(?) that hasn't been previously intialised with setsource" and does not mux the result

Now for some stupid questions

I have just came across x264, supposed to be better quality/size is this correct?
When converting audio the slider does not indicate what rate the audio will be converted to? Can I refer to a guide as to what each mark on the slider mean for audio conversion, also I dont know the equivalent aac bitrate as opposed to mp3. where can I find this information?

Ok did some more tests. Videos with 720x576 crop works fine. HD mpeg2 downconverted crop stuffs up with black bars on 4:3 videos
thanks

If the autocrop can't correctly detect the cropping required then you may have to manually crop affected movies - see the Advanced Settings tab.

x264 will give you better quality for an equivalent size compared to Xvid. Whether it suits you depends upon whether you are playing back on a PC, standalone DVD/media server/mp4 player, ipod etc. Support for x264 playback varies greatly on standalone's / media servers, and those that support it may only do so in mp4 container rather than mkv.

Question whats benefit MKV Vs Mp4?

not truly belonging to this thread.. so i suggest to search around for your answer

manual crop: you specify the crop AND NOT the width&height of resize
manual crop&resize: you specify BOTH crop values and width and height

the first case will let automkv calculate the correct height given the selected width on main panel

I think now I am completely lost. I have HD video 16:9 video which I wanna down convert to 640xwhatever(480 i assume) but the original video has black bars at the sides. I set the video to 640 on the front. Now do I tick M Crop and resize or just crop to cut out the black bars correctly

Also is there a link which will tell me more about your slider/bitrate details \?

OK, so have you tried selecting width of 640 on the front page and just let AutoMKV autocrop the black bars and resize automatically (i.e. do not touch anything on advanced settings regarding crop and resize).?

is there a link which will tell me more about your slider/bitrate details

I seem to recall a post somewhere with a rough comparison but don't recall who posted it etc or in what thread - suggest you try searching (the numbers aren't just specific to AutoMKV from my experience). Personally I use NeroAAC and use the default 0.35 thru to 0.45 depending upon what I'm encoding. You could also try a few encodes to see what gives the best quality to size trade-off for your sound system & ears.

what is the error message I posted in my original post?

I don't use Xvid in AutoMKV so probably can't help with the error, except to ask if there is a muxing.bat in the temp directory? If so, then what happens if you try to run it, do you get the same error?

IF the autocrop I suggested doesn't work, then you could select to just crop and let AutoMKV handle the resizing based on the 640 width you supply on the front tab (as you seem unsure of what the appropriate height is for your video).

Auto crop does not work due to watermarks in wrong places in the black bar area, keep popping up from time to time. I suppose thats the problem. Will try your suggestion and check again.

can somebody please give me a rough estimate on how long encoding of a full hd widescreen 120min. movie using the x264 balanced profile should take?

i let it run for one hour yesterday and it said 25 hours remaining - that figure changed drastically every 10 minutes or so, so i suppose it wasn't yet at a point where the remaining time is accurate. and usually those figures tend to go up until they're stable. so i'm guessing that it would take 1-2 days and that just for the first pass? can that be right?

zacoz
4th May 2008, 12:30
While I don't encode full HD material, that does sound like rather a long time. A recent 110min DVD resolution movie I processed took 2.25 hours from start to finish (just under 2 hrs for the video) - that's on a 2.3GHz E6550 Core2Duo, using just a simple RemoveGrain filter with single pass CRF. The time for your encode of course is going to be very dependant upon your processor specs and what filtering you are doing.

I've not experienced drastic changes in the time to completion estimates that you're describing either. Were you possibly using the PC for something else at the same time, as that would cause the circumstances you describe as the processor % available for encoding would be changing.

i'm on a x2 4800+ machine and i was using the removegrain mode 2 filter that's set by default...

as far as using my pc for something else at the time goes - nope, i was hardly doing anything in the meantime...

Just running a x264 test encode here on a 5 minute 1440x1080 HD source using 2 pass balanced profile, RemoveGrain(mode=2) filter, autocrop with spline36resize filter and with AQ set to 0.

Using 0.96beta12 the first pass chugged along at an average of 12.15 fps, while the second pass is averaging 3.67 fps.

Using 0.95c the first pass was averaging about 10fps (didn't bother running it to test the 2nd pass).

If I leave AQ at its default with 0.96beta12, the first pass stays around 12.15 fps. I imagine the second pass may be slower however.

I gather you are getting significantly slower fps after allowing for the difference between 1920x1080 and my tests of 1440x1080? Could you post your log from the affected encode? Are both your cores being used fully? Try using the 0.96beta version which has an improved x264 encoder.

sh4dow
4th May 2008, 13:47
well i just tried it with beta12, manual cropping (so i would not have to select a resize filter - i don't know what that thing does with the filter if the picture doesn't need to be resized but i want to make sure that there's no resizing going on) and aq mode set to 0.

both cores are almost fully used (cpu usage is between 85 and 95%), after about 3 minutes of encoding, it says: "encoded frames: 21/2250 (0.9%), 0.09 fps, eta 7:07:11"

zacoz
4th May 2008, 15:12
@sh4dow
Would you post your log to see if there's anything there that is odd (use CODE tags - don't post as attachment).

Are you ripping from a disc on-the-fly or using a USB attached drive? Although I wouldn't think that they would explain a 0.09fps processing rate.

sh4dow
4th May 2008, 17:02
ah, yes... the log file... sorry, forgot about that
i rip from an usb attached device - but since i'm able to watch the evo-file almost realtime from that (not sure if it's my cpu or the usb connection that isn't enough), the encoder would get frames at an average speed of 15-20fps.

here's the log (obviously, i replaced some of the paths with "..."):

@sh4dow

you are encoding a grf file , isn't it ?

also.. look at resolution
Movie Width/Height: 1920/1080

just a little bit high, so maybe you are cpu limited... BUT but without your avs input we cannot know what filters OR decoders used.. i can only suggest to use coreavc..

BHH

sh4dow
4th May 2008, 18:22
actually, i read somewhere that automkv can handle evo-files if piped through an avs script. so i just set the evo-file as directshowsource, no additional filters or anything

but using a grf-file with coreavc instead doesn't seem to make a difference. x264 still drops below 1fps after minutes.

as for the resolution - yeah, i don't know why the manual cropping doesn't seem to have an effect. i could crop over 500 pixels on top and bottom. but i doubt that letterboxes have much of an impact on encoding speed anyway. and right now, i don't really care about quality...

buzzqw

On avs input NO RESIZE or CROP or FILTER is applyed.

the script is taken as is.

Oke, i got some thoughts i'd like to share. And ofcourse ask if
this would be possible, with the program. and if so, what would be the best settings.

I've got a BR-iso (28gig) wich i can mount in deamon tools.
This would give me a Digital hd calibration tool.
Since i will get a new screen this week, i'd
like to be able to view this tool. Would it be possible
to rip this to 100% quality HD-WMV. This is my best option
to play in my setup (for now)....and what settings would i use.

While i am typing this, i am thinking....it might be usefull to
have a menu structure for these kind of things...uhmmmmm
..then its a no-go..

Clearly... this is one of those special cases when autocrop wont work because of the watermarks.

I suggest that you use Media Player Classic (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Players/Media-Player-Classic-for-Win2kXP.shtml) (to take a snapshot of one frame from the movie) and MS Picture Manager (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/CH010001171033.aspx) (to crop)... then scale downto 640 width and calculate the proportional height (see Anamorphic or not Anamorphic (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1075130#post1075130) but use 640 width).
Use the resultant height in AutoMKV.

It's all good !!!

any ideas why the package does not start on vista 64bit ultimate?
i tried v.95c but it only opens the DGindexer, which doesnt do anything...

btw i use the AutoMKV-v0.95c-Setup.exe
note i skipped xvid koepi cause it fails on install... cant retrieve the file from the url specified in the installer!
installed all other apps on default!
as its a pvr file i set projectX

when i select a source file DGindex opens, and does not close, unless i close it by clicking the exit.
same when i start encoding...
the log does not say anything about errors

videolan client says stream 1 (video) is mpgv (TV-RIP from terratec cinergy S2 (but its no hddtv rip))

NOTE: adminstrator handling is disabled -> all rights available
i also enabled the compatibility mode for xp sp2

PS: i guess it does not recognize the file as a vaild mpeg source...??

EDIT: virtualdub tells me: MPEG IMport Filter: invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream
EDIT2: if i skip the AUDIO track it starts encoding (freaking slow but it starts with less than 2fps)
autogk detects the video and audio and processes it correct, probably this info helps you?

Seems there been an update to the Koepi Xvid build. Download the updated file from here (http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=4521&s=52) and install. Then try it again and post results and log file (in CODE tags).

@Ajax_Undone
Link to new Koepi build for inclusion in installer: http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=4521&s=52

@buzzqw
Link will also need updating on post one of 0.95c and 0.96beta threads.

@Luke2000

I note you are using directories with square brackets [ ]. Is there any difference if you use directories without these brackets. By all means however upload the clip and I'll try encoding it here.

hi, i tested in another location without the brackets...

anyway... i uploaded the file to megaupload

any ideas why the brackets affect the indexer???

hi, i tested in another location without the brackets...
works there... thats odd :(
Good to hear :)

any ideas why the brackets affect the indexer???
No, but a number of the apps called by encoding GUI's (not just AutoMKV) don't seem to like very long paths or non alpha-numeric characters.

EDIT: do you know what gives better results,
Video/Audio PS (*.mpg)
or
Video/Audio TS (*.ts)
AND does automkv support the ts file?
In my Digital TV Captures I've personally not noticed a quality difference whether I record in *.mpg or *.ts however I always use *.ts now as that way I capture all audio & subtitle channels.

AutoMKV supports *.ts input files. You may want to select "Use ProjectX for TS files" on the Advanced Settings tab as dgindex balks on some TS files.

EDIT2:
stops after encoding audio
According to the log it has successfully encoded the video also ("17:03:48 Only Movie Size: 18854200 bytes"), but has failed on the muxing stage. Try running the muxing.bat file within the temp directory to see if it will mux (note: resulting mkv file will be created in the temp directory when run manually).

I ran the encode here (0.95c on WinXPsp2 box) and everything went smoothly including the muxing. I can't see anything wrong with the muxing command and it's essentially identical to mine.

further note:
the movie is 16:9 but it gets encoded to 4:3 although i set keep original resolution...
There's an issue with 0.95 series where if you select "Original" as the width for an anamorphic video and don't tick "Anamorphic Encoding" on the Advanced Settings tab it will be muxed using the incorrect DAR. There is a warning that appears in the staus bar to recommend ticking "Anamorphic Encoding" but this is easily overlooked. The issue has been resolved within the 0.96 betas being currently worked on (can't recall if it's in beta12 or will be in next beta released).

Luke2000

ok, so.. will check the next release and check the anamorphic encoding feature... and the manual muxing!

NOTE: my source movie was 7mb the encoded movie was 18mb - seems i had a bad sample, or is it possible that my source is already encoded?

EDIT: nice feature would be a graphical editor where you can select the cropbox :D

Hi!

I've been reading about this great program for some time now and finally got around to use it, but I have some problems.
I've been trying to encode a TV recording in anamorphic x264/mkv but I can't figure out how to do it.

Source is 704x576 PAL with PAR=1.0909(12/11) DAR=1.3333

What I want to do is:

1. crop 2,6,2,4 (L,R,T,B)
2. leave PAR at 1.0909 (or set a new DAR=1.3320)
3. NOT (!) resize but leave the cropped resolution (696x570)

I have no idea how to do that. AutoMKV always tries to resize giving me some weird resolutons and I don't know where to enter PAR or a new DAR value.

Any help appreciated!

hello -

i've been trying automkv and am pretty happy with it but have a couple of questions:

1. when i insert a disc that has multiple episodes on it and then press "check drive," it only shows one of the episodes in the "Select" drop down menu. how do i get it to allow me to choose the other episodes? i tried changing the input file but it doesn't seem to make any difference: if the input file is vts_03_0.ifo and i change it to vts_01_0.ifo, it reverts back to vts_03_0.ifo.

2. also, when i want to preserve the quality of the dvd, i use the "dvd_main_cq" profile that was created by the person who published the newbie guide. and that seems to work pretty well. in that regard:

(a) i'm wondering if there's a more efficient profile (e.g., one that is faster or results in smaller files but maintains the image quality of the dvd_main_cq profile); and

(b) what's a good profile to use for situations where i'm willing to sacrifice a bit of quality in exchange for faster encoding (or smaller file size)? i'd love a list showing something like xyz profile will give you abc% of the quality in about def% of the time, compared to the dvd_main_cq profile.

thanks!

t4uecker, on multi-episodes check the Process This Ifo in the Advanced Settings under Muxing and Indexing Options before selecting the input file. After selecting the file then go to the drop down Select PGC menu. Do not select Check Drive when doing this. That will seek out the largest Ifo on the disc.

Cheers,
Rick

Try to replace the cropped area with black borders such that the total size remains 704x576. No need to change SAR or DAR then.
Crop(2,2,-6,-4) #L,T,R,B
AddBorders(2,2,6,4)

Crop(2,2,-6,-4) #L,T,R,B
AddBorders(2,2,6,4)

It seems like a dirty workaround and the point is to remove the black bars/garbage (especially on DVDs).

On Advanced Settings tab try selecting Use Manual Crop/Resize, specifying the crop values AND the width and height you want (704 x 576).

NOTE: my source movie was 7mb the encoded movie was 18mb - seems i had a bad sample, or is it possible that my source is already encoded?Yes, your source is already encoded. But the reason you are getting a bigger file is you are telling AutoMKV to input a 7 mb file and output a 700 mb file (1 CD filesize).
EDIT: nice feature would be a graphical editor where you can select the cropbox :D
Have you tried using the preview button on the Advanced Settings tab?

hmm its getting my nerves...
tried to encode a long movie today...
program says DONE when audio was encoded

You haven't selected a resizer, yet you are trying to rezsize a 576 (720 - 71 - 73) x 576 video to 1360 x 576.

EDIT: Whoops, must've been tired, I applied your top/bottom crop figures to left/right in my original response. It should have read:
"You haven't selected a resizer, yet you are trying to rezsize a 720 x 432 (576 - 71 - 73) video to 1360 x 576."

On Advanced Settings tab try selecting Use Manual Crop/Resize, specifying the crop values AND the width and height you want (704 x 576).

Aaah, after reading your answer I've tried to write custom values directly in main AutoMKV advanced settings tab and it worked! :thanks: Till now, I've been doing it in the crop preview and that seems to be broken because it wouldn't let me set custom resize value. Maybe buzzqw could take a look at it.

Anyway, there's a new problem now. In Advanced Settings under Aspect Ratio Options...if i leave Force PAR in avs on AUTO, it encodes ok but with very small error (PAR 1.0919 instead of 1.0909). But if I set a custom value 1.0909 everything breaks. PAR ends up as 1.001436 and it has to use FFMPEG to encode.

Here are the logs:

Force PAR = AUTO

Also, it seems that selecting Anamorphic Encoding (Advanced Settings - Aspect Ratio Options) or not doesn't make a difference. The encoded file will be anamorphic either way.

excuse me for my english
i'm using massively automkv (excellent) but i have a problem from version 0.95c: when i compress audio to 96 khz CBR the program converts sample rate to 32.000 even if the source is 44.100 or 48.000. in the previous versions not...
it's possible to fix the issue?
