@kretin
something is going wrong with your avisynth setup. here is all ok
i can only suggest to deinstall avisynth, check your c:\windows\system32 folder and remove avisynth.dll, delete your c:\program files\avisynth2.5 folder
reboot and then reinstall avisynth and reboot again.
as last change try selecting ConvertFPS BUT on fps write 25000,1000
I uninstalled avisynth, deleted the dll from system32 and deleted all other versions installed with other utilities. I re-installed it and watched as the new dll was added to system32.
Still I have the same problem. I can convert to anamorphic which uses avisynth, so I know that it's using the latest version because that's the only one I have on my system. But when I try to convert from 50 fps to 25 fps it goes to ffmpeg :(
So if it works on your system the problem must lie with the source. Are you testing with an 50fps 576p mpg2 source recorded from HDTV?

@valnar
dont' use the visual crop
just the simple manual crop. set your left/top/rigth/bottom AND not width and height
DON'T check anamorph or itu
on main panel simply set resizer NONE
in this way your avs will be something like
mpeg2source("test.d2v")
crop(0,54,0,-60)
so not resizer
@kretin
try with changefps
also, could you post a link to a sample to download and test ?

Yes, Changefps works ok, not quite as nice output as convert though :)
I've posted a sample HERE (http://www.zerogravity.com.au/temp/Test_1min.mpg), 1 min 50fps 576p mpeg2 - 62Mb

Hi to all!
I follow with interest this very usefull software.
Only one question: why there's no more possibility to use AVI container?
Thanks a lot and go on!

what do you mean exactly, would you like to see more codecs than xvid for the avi-container? I think the supported xvid-avi is enough for most cases.

ok, the convertfps has peculiar parameters, for using is better to read the documentation
i can suggest to use AssumeFPS
Thanks very much buzzqw.
I've done some experimentation and it appears that avisynth is just incapable of converting 50fps to 25fps by blending successive frames. I've tried a number of parameters as suggested by the documentation (eg pal_film) which it either doesn't recognise or when it does it still wants the "zone" parameter added which causes it to basically work the same as changefps.
So I'll keep trying out workarounds :)
With workarounds in mind, do you know the answer to my other question?
Instead of a 720Mb file I have a 57.2Mb file. It plays the first few seconds ok and then the video stream becomes black with a notice along the top:
"CAVIStreamSynth: System exception - Access Violation at 0x0, reading from 0x0". Occurred the same for 3 attempts, but worked for a different source...
Please ignore this question regarding the "CAVIStreamSynth: System exception - Access Violation at 0x0, reading from 0x0" message. I just tested again with 95d and it worked, yay. Workaround 1 works :)

Hopefully last question. . .I've got all the primary options figured out now. I am trying to manually crop the black bars, how do I activate the "preview" so I can figure out the values to put in the top and bottom crop?
Thank you again very much!

Hi Valnar. Definitely no expert, but I am trying to do the same thing as you I think: keep the original pixels, only remove the black bars, no resize before or during encoding. It works for me, so unless I got something wrong (then let's talk more), I believe you got what you wanted:
Your original movie is a 2.35:1 AR placed in a 16:9 anamorphic frame of dimension 720x480 (NTSC). By cropping 54 and 60 from top and bottom you get 720x366 (By the way does MOD16 not refers to the final size 366? If yes you should crop 2 pixels less). One could maybe say that the anamorphic overlay was removed. If you then force the AR in your player to 1:1, you should see exactly the same distorsion in your original movie and in the cropped one. In other words, the original (pixel) AR of the film was preserved.
My guess is that your player is somehow confused and is not able to identify the 2.35 :1 AR of your cropped movie (I use VLC and Media Player Classic HC, both are ok). How does it look like when you force 2.35:1 AR in your player ?
By the way I'm in PAL world (But I don't think that changes anything other than the pixel AR & vertical resolution)

You didn't answer my question, but I'm pretty sure I got it: Media Player Classic can only handle up to 16:9 (i.e. 1.78:1), but not 2.35:1. I just tried with a 2.35:1 movie and had the same problem as you. Don't know why that limitation, VLC can handle whatever AR is indicated in the movie header.
=> either you keep the black bars for the encoding (anamorphic 16:9), or you stop using MPC...
I believe Tirade mentioned that there is no difference in the final size when keeping the black bars (would like to see some definitive test results on that: so far resizing was involved). If that is true, then I would recommend sticking to 16:9 as a standard. Because I still have doubts I so far removed the bars...

You are correct. It looks like I should either keep the original black bars in movies wider than 1.78 and encode anamorphic, or go full out and encode to 1:1 without anamorphic since the resize filter comes into play then.

Valnar, to be honest I don't understand the "anamorphic encoding" option of the "Advanced Settings". My (our?) goal is just to crop the black bars and have the size stay the same => no resize filter (unlike you say). The proper AR (2.35:1) is stored along the movie for the player to use (and for MPC to ignore...). Or do I get it wrong ?
Buzzwq, I do manual crop only (resize=NONE) and have that "anamorphic encoding" checked. Does that make sense? What would happen if it weren't checked ?

sense ? no for resizing since NO resizer is applyed
BUT checking anamorphic will trigger serveral change on AR muxing

Can't test it here myself just now to be 100% sure, but I've never noticed this issue. I have my MPC set so that the Video Frame (from view menu or right click) is set to "Touch Window from Inside" and with "Keep Aspect Ratio" selected. Therefore a 2.35:1 movie within a MPC window that is physically 16:9 will fill the width of the window but retain the correct 2.35:1 AR. MPC will leave black bars top and bottom. Try it out and see if it makes a difference for you.

Hi zacoz. Unless I'm mistaken, the problem is that by cropping the bars like Valnar & I do the movie is no longer physically 16:9, but 2.35:1 (both in pixel aspect ratio and physically). MPC only supports 2:35.1 movies if they are anamorphic 16:9, i.e. include the bars.

thank u for the answer.........any help??
valnar

@valnar:
You know, I'm not sure this is the problem. If I do a regular simple-resize, anamorphic with a 720 width, it works fine. The resulting movie is 720x368 anamorphically sized to 848x368 on playback. The difference is the resize filter is being used. Media Player Classic has no problem with that.
So either AutoMKV isn't doing something right or me. I can't get it to cut the black bars, leave anamorphic intact, and *not* use a resize filter.

Hi,
trying to understand the relationship of the parameters.
1) I'm using Constant_Quality profile, the only setting that seem to make a difference is "CQ time".
Is there any effect in setting options in "AutoResize and Bitrate/Quality" box? In the wiki it says "special relationship", shows the box and then the next paragraph "These settings do absolutely nothing with the CQ profile"... Did I get it correctly - no use with CQ profile?
2) I tested a couple of times to convert a small clip (6 MB) to see the ratio of original size with the above profile, CQ = 3. The result is mpeg2 544x480 6635 KB -> XviD 640x480 5406 KB. ~76%. Seemed OK. Left converting the complete movie overnight. The result is 98% of the original (1,378,097 KB -> 1,406,144 KB). Seems like a big difference. Should I try with bigger test clip? If I only had more time...
Could you recommend a setting to produce good quality with the result size ~50 - 75%?
I tried out WinAVI previously. Very fast (20-30 min for 1.5-hour movie if I recall), good ratio of original to the encoded video, good quality, the only problem is the video pauses every few seconds shortly but noticeably.
3) Is there another way to specify DAR 4:3 instead of providing "manual resize setting", which increases the encoded-video size?
Hope, I make sense. My knowledge in this area is really limited.
4) The source I use is a transport stream from satellite, mpeg2. (correct me if I'm confusing the two). I read that it's a good idea to "fix" the stream with ProjectX before encoding. There is a box "DVR/PVR and TS Files" in Advanced settings tab, but it's grayed out. Does it get enabled only when I provide .ts file? Will it actually do any good to my files if it was enabled or I'd better off using ProjectX directly?
5) Not sure if it's a bug or what. Yesterday, I saved the configuration where I specified the size manually (640x480). Today, when I opened AutoMKV the checkbox was marked with the same values, but when I tried to convert the same clip (544x480), the result was the original size and not 640x480. Only when I unchecked and checked "Use manual crop/resize" and re-added the values, it resized the video.
Thanks in advance!

Me again :)
I just converted a 1080i mpg2 source to 576p anamorphic xvid. Using 0.95d it couldn't load in avisynth and reverted to ffmpeg (thus no anamorphic), but in 0.93 it loaded fine in avisynth and created the anamorphic xvid properly. Here are the logs:

@Aylwin AND @kretin
please open the movie.avs in virtualdub, what is the error?
@hfmls
as said several time, 5.1 audio don't seems to work properly. Much depend on decoding filters and pc setup (on my pc is more frquent a crash than a success for 5.1 audio...)
to be sure to use 5.1, select original as channel options, and go in advanced audio options and be sure that audio codec is wmapro
and wich are the best/fast settings for WMV9 1pass? do filters have anything to do with ETA?
more filtering require more time, obviusly. i can suggest to select wmv9_1_pass_cbr then in advanced settings set Specify quality and set it at 90%
or .. for a more quicker select wmv8_1_pass and specify 95% as quality
@kapucin
Hi,
trying to understand the relationship of the parameters.
Did I get it correctly - no use with CQ profile?
let's think together: constant quality is a way to get for all movie the same visual quality. Applying a Constant Rate Factor (crf) is near impossible to predict the final size, due to this automkv will grey-out the disk settings when constant quality is selected.
For the same reason to a Autoresize (called even Compression Test) have no clue on a pure constant quality profile (the only reason to use is when i want to get a specify disk settings BUT use a crf profile... not a good idea.. better to stick with a regular 2 pass profile)
Could you recommend a setting to produce good quality with the result size ~50 - 75%?
just use the 1 pass high efficency profile and set disk settings to your desidered final size.
Due to 1 pass strategy the final size will be not perfectly achivied.. but should be fast and good looking :)
3) Is there another way to specify DAR 4:3 instead of providing "manual resize setting", which increases the encoded-video size?
Hope, I make sense. My knowledge in this area is really limited.
the dar, for mpeg files, is read from d2v file (and so directly from mpeg2 stream). You can always force dar in muxing, in advanced settings
And.. just a suggestion, start using options you understand properly, then use all others
Is a common behavior that ONLY using all advanced settings/options together you got a good files.
Automkv is born to be ... Auto(matic).. so the advanced options should be used only when the Auto(matic) fails
Will it actually do any good to my files if it was enabled or I'd better off using ProjectX directly?
the projectx check is avaiable only when the input file is a TS files, not a .mpg
Projectx have a better handling of ts file, expecially on audio synch and corrupted stream. BUT if your source files are OK.. don't need to use projectx
[QUOTE]5) Not sure if it's a bug or what. Yesterday, I saved the configuration where I specified the size manually (640x480). Today, when I opened AutoMKV the checkbox was marked with the same values, but when I tried to convert the same clip (544x480), the result was the original size and not 640x480. Only when I unchecked and checked "Use manual crop/resize" and re-added the values, it resized the video.[QUOTE]
a log could help...

So I see why we get a new thread. Symbolices arrival of Buzz Mk II no doubt!
Just a general suggestion about the 1st post:
Put the link to MIRROR 1st in the message (in bold) and your own site 2nd in normal type. Most people will click on the 1st link. I know I do. And then I get this feeling waitaminute wasn't there a mirror..

Hello folks
I am a bit of a noobie to this and just want to compress my DVD's (typically 8gb) to MKVs sized at around 4gb. There seems to be a million different settings!
I did some experimenting and found that I can get reasonable results with the following:
- profile HQ-slower
- LanczosResize (Width Resolution = Automatic)
- Filesize 1 DVD-R (about 4.5gb)
- Anamorphic Encoding (some movies did not play back at correct AR and by checking this it was fixed)
Am I missing anything or is this reasonable?
The encoding seems to take about 1.30 hours with my Q6600.
Thanks!!

@buzzqw
Congrats mate. Welcome to a whole new world. :cool:
@chappy16775
Seems ok if your goal is to have a fixed file size, for example to burn onto DVD-R's. If you are encoding for use on a server (where file size is less important) then you may want to look at using a constant quality profile or specifying the quality %.
As you indicated, you've done some experimenting to arrive at this. That's the best way to go as everyone has different needs and ideas on what is acceptable when trading off sharpness / smoothness / quality / filesize / processing time etc. You'll find that you'll change yourself as you progress and experiment more.

Does anybody know which version or build the xvidcore.dll in the encoder directory is? Is it a 1.2x built (multithread-enabled)?

thanks to all pals! :)
it's an hard work (more difficult then fixing the queue ... :p) but it's all worth!
@Spreeni
yes, it's 1.2.xxx just check the cores usage on encoding

it's just a matter of changing the profile... just change METype to 2
--aq-strength 0.00 --aq-sensitivity 0
the default is 5 (0.5) and 13, set to these values (and hit save settings)

Another question. I have a anime .mkv when I play it with ZoomPlayer I see subtitle, but I don't see them with automkv. I try to reencode the mkv -> m2ts.. but still no subtitle.
I extract the .mkv and I only have .h264, ac3, chapters.txt
where are the subtitles ?
the video : ([SS]_Mai-Otome_Zwei_-_04_(h264_AAC)_[44371F87].mkv) can get it from here : (http://www.staticsubs.org/releases/torrent.php?id=559)
look like it's soft subs. but I didn't be able to extract the subs from the mkv.. if someone can help ?
