What DVD Authoring software are you using?
Maybe you can use SUP files instead of VobSub files. They are quite the same but without padding.
See here (http://www.ifoedit.com/subpform.html) for the SUP file format.

I'v tried the sup format but it doesn't work. It starts with a SP header while the Vobsub and DVD format are only contigious "sub-picture packs".
I use DVDLab which creates such streams from srt files. The drawback is that it don't support control characters. You can set e.g. italics lines manually but if you have to reload the srt because of a typo, you have to do it all over again.
"SubtitleCreator" creates beautiful antialiased subtitles and positioning is much more acurate. I now use DVDSubEdit for better positioning which works on the IFO files and VOB's but you can't create sub-picture streams with it.

The VobSub files produced by SubtitleCreator can be used by all the VobSub tools and by the players accepting VobSub subtitles. So I don't understand in what way they are not conform with standart VobSub subtitles.
Did you also try using subtitles directly extracted with VSRip to see if they work?
Cheers
Manusse
[Edit] DVDLab Pro doesn't seem to accept VobSub subtitles: http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/helppro2/index.html?subtitles.htm

What the DVDLab link shows is the sub-stream generator. Indeed this accepts only text formats like srt.
This tool creates a "sp1" file on disk that is compatible with the standard dvd sub-picture stream. Then this stream is used in the main authoring program. You there can put anything you like (and try if it works). I ripped a sub-stream from a DVD with SmartRipper, renamed the extension to "sp1" and it is accepted by DVDLab.
If you have VobEdit please compare a Vobsub stream with a DVD rip. You'll see that the only difference is the padding stream which in a Vobsub also contains only 0xFF data but is reported as a unknown stream. Probably because of a stream ID difference.
Chris.

Hello again,
I'm having a slight problem when converting from .SRT to VobSub. It seems like STC is injecting some error in the timing. Timing looks great until I save the file into a VobSub. I notice because there isn't a problem when watching with the .srt, but when watching with the .idx/.sub, there's delays.
The problem seems to get worse as time goes on. I've compared using my previous method for converting into VobSub, and that method (SubRip-->Maestro-->Son2Vobsub) does not have problems.
Here are some examples.
## .SRT File Timing
568
01:01:07,011 --> 01:01:14,987
569
01:01:15,189 --> 01:01:21,843
570
01:01:22,867 --> 01:01:29,570
571
01:01:30,246 --> 01:01:38,362
## Using Old Method
timestamp: 01:01:07:033, filepos: 0001a2000
timestamp: 01:01:15:200, filepos: 0001a3000
timestamp: 01:01:22:867, filepos: 0001a4000
timestamp: 01:01:30:233, filepos: 0001a4800
## Using STC
## Timings displayed in STC window are correct
## This is what I get in the .idx file
timestamp: 01:01:03:348, filepos: 0001ae800
timestamp: 01:01:11:518, filepos: 0001af800
timestamp: 01:01:19:188, filepos: 0001b0800
timestamp: 01:01:26:560, filepos: 0001b1000
## After converting from 30 fps to 29.97 fps from the STC window
timestamp: 01:01:07:014, filepos: 0001ae800
timestamp: 01:01:15:192, filepos: 0001af800
timestamp: 01:01:22:870, filepos: 0001b0800
timestamp: 01:01:30:249, filepos: 0001b1000
Hmmm... just thought of that on the fly... interesting result.
Tested on another file and it seems that saving as VobSub will convert time from 30 fps to 29.97 fps.

hi all:
i have some questions/requests.
i'm using latest beta - 2.2.1
1.when i manage the profiles, there is no option to save
the original profile.i'm using FAVC as my avi-->DVD
authoriting tool, and this tool used the default profiles that are
included on it.
2.when manage the profile, i wanted to change the default font
but on the script option it's only allowed to western.for my use
i need the hebrew option to be able.
3.i saw on the top right the options to change the color text,
background, etc'...
but when i choose "File --> Export Palette" option
it wouldn't export it correctly
(i opened it after, and it's returns to default).
am i doing something wrong?

@FitzGerald: OK, I could reproduce it. Thanks for this bug report. I'm gonna look at it.
@danielk68:
1. I don't understand your question. What is FAVC?
2. You can change the script options in the Settings.xml file.
3. When you save the color palette, you save only the colors but not which ones are used. There is presently no way to do this. It's normal.

this app use the profile that it's included in subtitle creator.
2.how do i do it? i tried to change the font(from arial to tahoma)
without success.(as you said ,in the settings.xml settings)
3.if i want that my subtitle will be yellow and not white as
it's now, how can i do it?

1°) About the profiles in SC. I don't know how to help you as I don't use them much. I know these are a bit buggy. This should be fixed in a later version but at present we have many other things to improve and this is a bit low priority. Did you try the Profiles -> Manage profiles menu?
2°) In the settingx.xml, you can change the script option, not the font itself. The font is open dynamically from the fonts installed on you PC. See an example below for the script option.
<CodePageDefinition>
<CodePageNumber>1251</CodePageNumber>
<CodePageName>Cyrillic</CodePageName>
</CodePageDefinition>
In your case (Hebrew), you don't need to edit it. Just choose Format -> Select character encoding -> Hebrew.
3°) As I mentioned before, at present, there is no means for automating the color change. You can just select the colors you want using your mouse (top-right -> Set subtitle colors box). Or modify them globaly using the Tools -> Manipulate Sup menu.

OK, I see the point. This is more a problem in the GUI than a real bug. We will find a solution for next version.
However you can fix it in the meantime. When you open a VobSub file SubtitleCreator uses the palette in the idx file. What you can do is just edit the idx file of your second subtitle and write the default values (to know them, open a SUP or VobSub file, set the colors to default, then save is as VobSub, you can find the default colors in the idx file).

manusse,
I'm having a problem with a progressive lag induced by STC into my VobSub files (yes, those things, again). This occurs while viewing on my stand alone player, but it is not an issue viewing on my computer.
Again, this is a difference in my "old method" of going from .srt to VobSub (.idx/.sub) using Subrip to MaestroSBT to son2vsub.
Scanning through the .idx files, the only difference is in the palette.
Old files .idx:
# The original palette of the DVD in PGC#1 palette: ffffff, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000
# Custom colors (transp idxs and the four colors)
custom colors: OFF, tridx: 1110, colors: 808080, ffffff, 000000, 000000
New files .idx
# The palette of the generated file palette: 0300e3, e83f07, 000000, ffffff, 11e913, ec13ec, faff1c, 0b5c76, 7c7c7c, e0e0e0, 701d08, 08710c, 01006c, cd0be9, d2a816, 730874
# Custom colors (transp idxs and the four colors)
custom colors: OFF, tridx: 1000, colors: e0e0e0, ffffff, 000000, 7c7c7c
I'm using your default palette... but it seems like the other method has a simpler palette... not sure how much of a difference it makes. They both end up being the same colors. Maybe this makes a difference.
Another setting I used in the "old method" was to set the bitmaps as Windows 4-bit BMPs (MaestroSBT had a ton of options). Uncompressed smallest BMP was fine as I only used white and black. White was always defined as #FFFFFF and black as #000000.
Thought this was an issue with my standalone, but I'm thinking it is something else going on...
FitzGerald
15th April 2007, 10:42
Just spent some time running tests.
1) Confirmed old method shows no lag.
2) Lag gets progressive, its nearly like 2.5 seconds around 60 minute mark.
3) The timing in .idx files is very close to be insignificant in differences.
4) Palette does not have any impact. I swapped them and viewed on SAP... there was still a lag.
I wonder if it is in how the files are compressed into .sub format... but I don't know, or maybe the 30-29.97 bug has some impact on the .sub file that we're not aware of.

Hi FitzGerald,
About the lag you've noticed before. I've investigated a bit and it's only for NTSC DVD's. It is a bug in SC and we will fix it in a future version (probably the next beta).
About your current problem, your detailed description gives me an idea. The timings of a VobSub file are available in the .idx and in the .sub file. Most of the PC software players use the timings from the .idx file.
About the SAPs I don't know. Maybe some of them use the timings in the sub file. To check this, just modify the timings in the idx file "by hand" and see if the timings used by your SAP are still the same.
Cheers

You are right. My SAP is using the timing from the .sub file.

In case anyone is following this thread.... I figured a "hack" way to get VobSub correctly on my computer. You have to make 2 sets of .idx+.sub files. One set is just the original timings. For the second set, convert the file from 29.97 to 30 fps. Take the original timings .idx and match it up with the .sub file from the "hacked" set to create a set that works on my Philips DVP 5960.
Don't explain how this works to me, as I can't figure out where timing is stored in the .sub file... (is it at the end?) .

Could you explain what you mean with this? SC converts the text to graphics using 'default' MS routines. So you could add extra space, but the width of a space is fixed by the font you are dealing with. And do you think you would notice 5 pixels?

@mpucoder
When using the DVD wizard, I regularly get problems with muxing NTSC movies with Muxman (v0.15R). In detail: after demuxing with PgcDemux, SC creates a muxman project file. Muxman starts to process it, and it generates all the vob files. Next, muxman starts generating the IFOs when it crashes unexpectedly, without even generating a log file. When using IfoEdit's DVD authoring feature, it works just fine. I've also tested it without SC's sup, but that makes no difference, and it still crashes. Finally, I've tested it using muxman manually, and it still crashed. What's happening?
In the attached zip file, I have added the IFO's, the final directory at the point of crashing, the SC created project file, PgcDemux output logs, and the MS crash report. Hope that helps...

I meant the space between the characters in a word. I often use bold fonts and big outline in hope to improve readibility on small displays and avoid artefacts (not that there are any, but there is still visible flickering with 1 pixel lines on interlaced displays - I'm sure you know this is perfectly normal, and antialias filter is good, but not perfect). Also, big black outline helps readibility on a light background.
Anyway, with bold fonts and big outlines, characters in a word often come too close together and touch in some places, which looks ugly. The stretch function doesn't help much - it may make them bigger, but they are still too close together.
I thought 1-5 pixels would be enough for current DVD resolutions, but of course ideally there would be no limitation.
And thank you for the nice program! :)

Maybe you could edit IDX file and scale the subs horizontally ?
I'm mostly creating subs from scratch...
I think this would be similar to SubtitleCreator's stretch function - it would resize the bitmap as a whole, not put characters apart.
Of course, if implemented, it could possibly go other way - into negative values - to bring the characters closer together (this is not a request). :)

It's not implemented in SubtitleCreator. If you edit the idx file, only the delay function, the palette colors and the size (720x480 or 720x576) are supported.

I am using SC for the first time. I d'ont want to modify an already existing DVD but creating a new DVD from scratch. I cannot find any instructions or tutorial for that, so I simply start SC, open my .srt, mark my profile (16:9 widescreen) and set subtitle colors and position as they appear on the GUI (I suppose they are the default colors and position). Then, I save SUP and use it in IfoEdit. When I play the DVD I find subtitles correctly in position but they are all green! (background, text, outline and antalias). If I use the tool Manipulate SUP I get the same result. I cannot ever get the specied colors (background (9) light grey transp, text (3) white, outline (2) black, antalias (8) dark grey as I wish to). Same with v 2.1 and new 2.2 Please help!
Edit: I use PAL always

Always the same problem. When you generate your SUP file, you must first select use Format -> Use prefered subtitle colors -> Overwrite all colors. Then use the IFO that comes with your SUP file and it should work.

I used those format settings many times without help. My trouble always was that I was not able to discover that IFO file near the created SUP, although I had "as IFO" checked. My mistake was that I had not checked "Write palette with SUP Files"as well and it was unoperative!
I have now tried again and it works fine! Thanks you a lot for your help and for so good a tool!.

Hi Anime,
First thank you for this nice post and we appreciate that you like SubtitleCreator and want to help us (Paddington and myself) improving it.
I will try to answer to everything I can. If I don't answer to some point it will mostly be because Paddington is the expert of this particular point.
First about the antialias. This mode is only useful when previewing your subtitles. It uses more than the 4 colors that a real DVD can use. This means that the quality of the actual subtitles on the DVD does not depend on this setting.
1-Paddington is the expert but I don't think it's easy to enhance. What counts is the result on a TV set not on a screen copy of DVDSubEdit. Did you compare on a TV set (CRT)?
3-This is an identified bug. Will be fixed for next beta.
4-You can use more specialized software for this. SC is for creating Sup or VobSub file but is definitively not a very good srt editor.
5-It's on our plans to have a look at ssa or ass. But not before a few months, I think.
6-Hard to implement with srt file. How would you specify it?
8-You must open the original IFO file before creating your SUP file. Do you do it?
I've looked at your example. Actually they don't use an anti-aliasing color, that's why you can see 2 colors even with DVDSubedit. They use the 4th color as a 2nd outline color.
About the overlapping timings, SC has a few bugs related to NTSC timings so this may be the problem. We will have a look at this too.
Cheers

1. Quality, the subtitle which made by unknown software in some retail dvd is sharper clearer on TV and even more obvious on monitor though.

8. I did select my R2DVD IFO before SAVE SUP but in wizard later I choose my SUP, MUX comes out wrong color

You can do it easily, just use the <k>and </k> around the text in the second color.

Would it be possible to be able to sync a .sup file with another .sup file?
The reason for this should be that it would be possible to rip subtitles from one dvd and put in another. (If you for example have one dvd which is badly encoded but have the right language on the subtitles, and another good-quality dvd without the right subtitles.)
Also, in the future this could perhaps be a way of adding subtitles to HD-DVD/Bly-Ray discs from ordinary DVD's.

8. No the DVD doesn't comes with any subtitles
(I try to give more tries in future then we discuss this, might be my fault anyway =D)
14. by using the <K> i see no effects without AA and after that no effect seen in "DVDSubEdit.exe" and after SC_wizard mux the DVD, do I have to export the pallete? or is there a guide on how to use <K>? or is the SAMPLE DVD i suppied use another way to change color where i can see it in "DVDSubEdit.exe"?
I do need help on <K> because i tried and tried no result, i always made sup with SC with AA=OFF
-------------------------
16. I found another custom SUP DVD which the 4 colors pallete changes at certain #SUP line and viewable both in "DVDSubEdit.exe" and player, can we also do it in SC?
does anyone need sample of the DVD (TRIM) to understand what i means?

thanks for your time ^^

8.
No the DVD doesn't comes with any subtitles
Ok, then your original DVD has an empty color palette (which means green colors, most of the time). This explains the green subtitles.
To avoid this: The wizard will detect automatically that your original DVD has no subs and will automatically set the IFO palette to SubtitleCreator's default palette. However if you generate your SUP file before using the wizard, make sure that you have selected the same default palette before generating your SUP file (Format->Use prefered subtitle colors->Overwrite all colors).
14.
The <k> </k> effect is working. However DVDSubEdit is not able to display it. DVD players will, because it's part of the DVD specifications. If you can't preview the effect with SubtitleCreator, save your srt file and reopen it and you should be able to see the effect.
16.
They must use the method I've told you about before but SubtitleCreator can't. However with the Manipulate SUP menu, you can choose different colors within the same palette for each subpic.

Regarding a disc with multiple VTSs which all contain one episode, or a disc where there are multiple episodes in one VTS, is it possible to replace the subs with SubtitleCreator using the DVD wizard?

oh thanks, manusse
never notice the Manipulate SUP thingie till you said so,
But how is it possible to have "AA=OFF"
<k>K_COLOR_TEXT</k>
NORMAL_TEXT
within the same sup pic can we use AA as a 2nd color
i do think the sample i uploaded idea is good, able to have different color within same sup pic not using karaoke, can we have that feature in future?
and about the blinking issue of continous subpic
I notice that,
1
00:00:00,200 --> 00:00:00,860
sentence 1
2
00:00:00,860 --> 00:00:02,340
sentence 2
sentence 1
the subpic pixel generated for sentence 1 at (Subpic#1) is slightly different from (Subpic#2) no matter on pal or ntsc ifo. example sentence 1 might be a comment might be there for (Subpic#1~10)
and the duration is shifted to cause the blink?
#1 00:00:00,860 becomes 00:00:00,859
#2 00:00:00,860 becomes 00:00:00,861
a break of -1 & +1 is modified between both
the sample i upload have exact pixel in 2 continuous subpic
and either overlap by -00:00:00,001 or difference between them is 00:00:00,001
--------------------------
oh, it would be nice if
1) we can adjust horizontal position in Manipulate SUP
2) insert SUP or BMP inbetween possible? (i think not thou)
3) i think the quality can goes higher for SC, looking at SST(BMP) i think it is much clearer
4) how about when AA is off we can use <AA>AA_COLOR<AA>
5) how to apply <K> for more than 1 line break within 1 subpic
6) aligning 2 lines in one subpic like having 1 at weird position to translate certain symbol while another remains at the bottom as normal subtitle
7) what is the "set subtitle and position" in main window button for? i click nothing happens
8) After a day when update voblanker, and the wizard ask where is voblanker, i cancel, SC ask me a Q:"YES", "NO", without seeing i click NO,
SC never ask again
and everytime mux halfway it say cannot find voblanker... and stalled
(restore default setting cannot recover it, but it seems to ask again, but after wizard this time, the next time sc won't ask and forget the location of voblanker and stalled
un/re/install the SC is not able to recover it
but it seems to recover only after i uninstall,
delete "doc&set/user/.whatever.././././././SC/..."
9) about the wizard auto picking palette color again
i have confirm this time
-I throw in SRT
-open ifo, apply profile adjust here and to fix
error, too long lines(zh, jp character) that SC don't want to warp
after 30mins of fixing (lol)
-save as SUP
-open wizard, set and run
-choose that sup i save, i get below

Hi Anime,
You are kind but I would appreciate if you could:
1st: read my answers to your previous questions.
2nd: not ask the same question again and again.
OK?
About your question within the same sup pic can we use AA as a 2nd color
I think I've already answered twice, for ex:
They must use the method I've told you about before but SubtitleCreator can't
About this one: how about when AA is off we can use <AA>AA_COLOR<AA>
There is a misunderstanding, I think. The "Settings->Show subtitles without anti-aliasing" has nothing to do with the AA color used in the subtitles.
Let me quote myself again:
First about the antialias. This mode is only useful when previewing your subtitles. It uses more than the 4 colors that a real DVD can use. This means that the quality of the actual subtitles on the DVD does not depend on this setting.
About the rest of your post, I will quicky answer to some of the questions. Others are for Paddington :p
The blinking issue: We'll check that sometime but now Paddington is busy and I am on other bugs and enhancements.
8) We'll check. Could be a bug.
9) As your original DVD has no subtitles, you must make sure that you have selected the same default palette before generating your SUP file (Format->Use prefered subtitle colors->Overwrite all colors). As I've already explained in my previous message. Do it just after opening the IFO before saving the SUP. Normally, it should work. Tell me if it's OK or not.
Cheers

yo, manusse, i'm back, i got a real issue today
which i don't know how to solve.
i always used Zoom player to test out SC_MUX subtitle
before burning, my zoomplayer used a cyberlink power dvd6+ video filter. always no problem, thats the method i always used
but, today i get something weird.
this only happens the SUP i MUX today using SC, viewing with that filter, FFDshow is ok, but i belived today problem's SUP i made, might occur on standalone hardware DVD player
My setting are still normal, just that today i try to adjust touching the red line, AA=OFF, this occur on "alot" SUBpic (nearly per 10 subpic 5 distorted)
in the 3 x .SUP i mux today

Do you know what occur it?
not something wrong with the filter, it shows up fine on DVD
i made with SC previously but not on today i made with SC's
i test and re test and re test(exit the player),
the extra dirty outline at the bottom is always same
pixel
-----------------------------
about double question i'm sorry, i did read what you answer
but just saying that "i hope sc can work the way"
-------------------
when AA = OFF using <k> the mux out sup will have distort color, i confirm.
-------------------
about the voblanker clicking "dont ask again"
solving is too troublesome have to delete stuff which is hidden, ok with me, since i find out, but for ppl who don't know abit trouble
-------------------
9. on some company who produce R2J DVD the wiazard always pick wrongly i confirm. i suspect when scanario is this it will pick wrongly
VTS 01, PGC 01 for main movie but have serveral VTS and 3 PGC inside the VTS, i always take a extra steps using ifoedit to solve. ok for me, but others will wonder why the color looks weird.

I had a similar problem with vobsub -- the extra line of pixels at the bottom of subtitle:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1737884&group_id=120228&atid=686307
Weird thing is that this problem only occur on a standalone player.
The original vobsub subtitle had no problem, so it is definitely something introduced by SC.
Also the timing bug:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1735419&group_id=120228&atid=686307
Thanks.
Long time ago, also I reported the same problems with black lines/pixlels at the bottom of the subtitles. I didn't discovered why is this problem, even some people said that is because of odd position from the bottom.
enjoy,

I also had the problem with black lines/pixels, but this was not in STC. This was when I was using the "old method" by using SubRip-->MaestroSBT-->son2vobsub.
It would only happen when the pixel height of the bitmap used was odd. I ended up proving this theory by creating a Gimp Script that would add an extra line to the bitmap if needed. Now, I've always used an even vertical position, so it could manifest itself differently with an odd vertical position. This was showing up on my SAP, and in VLC player... but not MPC.
I also am using a workaround on the .idx-.sub timing issue (so far this has been seen on the Philips DVP5960). I create an .idx file from the original and then use a .sub file that has been converted from 29.97-->30 fps. There is no problem in using different files, and I guess the timing ends up being the same.

If I have a .sub (vobsub) file to start with, which tool can I use to convert the frame rate from 29.97 to 30? SubResync only changes the .idx file, not the .sub file.
I also find the concept of "frame rate in a .sub file" very odd. Does a .sub file contain absolute timestamps or frame counts, anybody knows?
Also, I encountered the timing problem when I used SC to change colors of a .idx/.sub subtitle, why would SC try to touch timestamps/framecounts at all?

Hi vince100,
Does a .sub file contain absolute timestamps or frame counts, anybody knows?
Actually the timings of the subtitles are not in frame counts but in number of clock cycle (PTS i.e. Presentation Time Stamp). But they should correspond to an exact frame number. An NTSC second is 90090 ticks and a PAL second is 90000 ticks at this clock.
However there are some bugs for NTSC sub/idx files produced by SubtitleCreator. As I've written this part of the code I plan to fix it in september 2007 if I can find some time. I think the bug is somehow related to this thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110212
FitzGerald uses his method when he is converting srt files to sub/idx. SubtitleCreator can retime srt files and this way FitzGerald can generate sub/idx files with SubtitleCreator that don't exhibit SC's NTSC timing bug.
why would SC try to touch timestamps/framecounts at all?
Sorry but that's the way it is working. SC's internal format is a kind of SUP format. So when you edit a VobSub file, SC will first convert it to SUP then allow you to process it as if it were a SUP and finally convert it back to VobSub if you chose to save is a VobSub file. And at each of these stages, time conversion occurs. This shouldn't be a problem however. But there is at least one bug somewhere that I need to fix.
The problem with open-source software is that there are more people willing to use them than people wanting to spend some time programming and fixing the bugs. And at present Paddington and myself are not much available for programming although we have already fixed some other bugs as you will be able to see in the next beta.
Cheers

Hi manusse,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Is this part of code available in the SourceForge? I'd like to take a crack at finding the bug, but couldn't seem to find the latest version of the code.
Thanks.
