I'm trying to encode myvideo.m2ts into myvideo.mkv but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use your program. I opeh the file using the "open *.m2ts file" button and select the video and audio and press start but it does nothing. I think it just works on the audio track a bit and then stops after a minute or two. It outputs no files. I can't believe a 1-click encoder is not simple enough for me...

I will try to create a sample. I think that the stream is corrupt at the end. If I split at the beginning, the samples work as expected. I've looked into this and fixed it. There is a spurious SPS at the end of the stream that specifies 720x480. I've modified DGIndexNV to use only the first SPS for writing the size to the DGI file. The fix will be in the next release. This should be a rare situation due to bad cutting of the source stream.

Hey Hawk,
This is the latest bug report I have generated. I think the issue lies in the subtitle processing code. Rather than the program just posting an error regarding forced subtitles not being found and moving forward (Which is a bug in and of itself i think; all necessary subtitle tracks were selected), it is actually cancelling the operation and then reporting back that the file was converted. However, what is more interesting is that the file is not even in the directory (with a size of 0 kb); it flat out doesnt exist. Im not sure why this is. I would take a good look at your subtitles code though.

Which date has your test version? I fixed some subtitle errors in the latest version.

What version did you use? Maybe you can post the log. Perhaps I can help you to fix it then.

Great program, but 0.48 test doesn't have the option to remove autocrop like you said earlier in the thread? :confused:

I am having problems with resize. Trying tp resize a movie to 720p. First tried the check box on the "General Settings" tab. No luck. still 1080p. Then tried to change under the advanced options, still no luck. The last time (never checked first) the subtitles were resized to 720, but not the video. Wonder what I am doing wrong.

While we're on the topic of cropping, is this feature beneficial for cropping the very tiny black border on some 16:9 films? I made an MKV last night of a Blu-ray rip with default auto-crop and didn't notice any small border, but I wasn't sure how much picture I lost due to the cropping. If I knew that only the small border was being removed, I wouldn't mind using auto-crop. I'm just unsure. :confused:

EDIT: So I went ahead and made sure auto-crop was turned off, but there was still data in the auto-crop log. What am I looking for that tells me the file was or wasn't auto-cropped? Here is the log:

I'll check if there's a bug in 720p resize code. Didn't test this with latest version.

Take a look at ??_encode.avs - there you can see if cropping/resizing was used.

I checked out the bitrate calculator, to see if I can finally encode some videos aiming for specific file sizes. I ran a couple of test encodes (96 MB M2TS file, 1080p, 1 AC3 stereo audio stream), trying to get a 10MB MKV. I used a semi-custom 2-pass profile:

--preset slow --tune film --level 4.1 --ref 5 --b-adapt 1 --aq-mode 1
and set the size value to 10. The resulting file was 61 MB.

Then I tried one of the built-in presets:
--preset slow --tune film --level 4.1 --ref 5 --no-fast-pskip --b-adapt 1
set to bitrate=8000 - the output file was 56 MB. Better, but still not quite there.

So then I used a CRF profile:
--preset slow --tune film --crf 20.0 --level 4.1 --ref 5 --no-fast-pskip --b-adapt 1
which gave me a 25 MB file, that looked just as good as the previous two, as far as I can tell. Something didn't quite add up, so I decided to go back to the first preset, this time set to 25 MB. I got an 85 MB file.

Apparently I'm missing something here. As a wise man once said: WTF am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to get a file that would be of the specified size?

Im back once more with harrowing blu-ray ripping troubles. This error was unique, however, in that it occurs on both version .4.7 AND the latest .4.8. Im attempting to narrow it now, but im unsure what the issue is. The movie plays back great in its individual m2ts files, but as usual we all love MKV ;)

Note: I recently did a clean install of windows, so I also reinstalled (or at least copied and setup) blu-rip. However, as far as I can tell all of my settings are the same.

The audio was about 1.5 MB, it was just a simple teaser trailer. But I did try it on a full-length film (about 35 GB, 25 GB of which was the video stream). I set it to a 4200 MB (so that together with a manually pre-compressed audio stream it would fit a DVD+R), using this 2-pass profile:
--preset slow --tune film --level 4.1 --ref 5 --b-adapt 1 --aq-mode 1
The next day the output file was about 11 GB, and the 2nd pass hasn't even finished yet.

In other words, is the audio/subtitle stream size subtracted from my 4200 MB before calculating target bitrate? Because if that's the case, then I've just realised that I should've set the target size to some 4900 MB (4200 MB for video, ~700 MB for the untouched AC3 audio later to be replaced with manually compressed 273 MB AAC audio, and 9 MB for IDX/SUB subtitles).

Alright so I think I have my issue narrowed down. For what ever reason, blu-rip is creating the necessary muxing files (to be muxed into mkv), but it is unable to open them for writing. I tried running blu-rip in Administrator mode, but this did not help. Any ideas on why this might be? The issue is consistent on .4.7 and .4.8. Again, it didn't crop up until i reinstalled windows 7 64bit.

The target size is the total size. Size of subs and audio streams are subtracted to calculate the video bitrate.
But there was a serious bug in my calculation..

Okay, so I ran some encodes using the latest test version - and it seems that the bug is still there, only now it works in the opposite direction, so to speak.

Again, I used this 2-pass preset:
--preset slow --tune film --level 4.1 --ref 5 --b-adapt 1 --aq-mode 1

I encoded two M2TS files: a small one (video stream - 89.5 MB, audio stream - 1.3 MB) and a larger one (video - 976 MB, audio - 13.3 MB, subtitles - 1.7 MB). Here are the results:

small file:

10 MB - 2.42 MB - 156 kbps
20 MB - 2.37 MB - 156 kbps
50 MB - 3.67 MB - 874 kbps

bigger file:

200 MB - 36.9 MB - 260 kbps
500 MB - 73.5 MB - 682 kbps


Another weird thing is the fact that both encodes of the bigger file are out of sync - the audio plays correctly and is in sync with subs, but the video plays in kind of slow motion (audio is 9:41, but video is 12:08). It looks as if the video was encoded at a higher frame rate, but all the encoded files report 23.98 fps and I haven't changed anything in the advanced settings. For the record, my computer is perfectly capable of playing HD content.

I'll run some more encodes, perhaps try to manually set the frame rate to 23.98.

I ran a quick encode of the smaller file and everything looks fine - the output file is exactly 10 MB in size and the bitrate is a promising 1248 kbps. I'll run some more encodes later, when I find some free time.

EDIT:
I encoded the bigger file and there's some progress, but we're not there yet. The output file is 193 MB with the bitrate of 2048 - apparently the bitrate is calculated before the subtitles are converted from SUP to IDX/SUB, as I set the target size to 200 MB. Not a big deal, but something to consider. What worries me is that the encoded video is still too long - 12:08 instead of 9:42. I used the 'stretch by' option in MKVmerge (value 582/728 - audio stream length/encoded video length) which is a decent workaround, but it's not perfect - the streams are still slightly out of sync towards the end of the clip. Now I'm running another encode of the same file, this time having set the video length in advanced options to 582,000 milliseconds.

Nope, that didn't help either - all it achieved was making the file 238 MB, with bitrate of 2567. However, I noticed something peculiar - the file I manually muxed, using the 'stretch by' option, reports frame rate of 29.991 fps. Coincidently, so does the AC3 audio stream when opened in Media Player Classic Homecinema, after pressing CTRL-G. I attempted an encode of the same file once more, except this time I set the frame rate in the advanced options to 30 fps. However, this ended in the following error:

Okay, I'm officially a moron. I was just going through various settings of BluRip and I found my old AviSynth profile I used when I was playing around with an older (0.4.4) version of the program - turns out that this bigger file I've been using for test encodes was one of seven files on this BD that were apparently reporting wrong frame rate - they are really 29.970 fps, while everything else is 23.976 fps. The question remains, however, why wasn't that fact detected by the encoder. What's more, when I selected 29.967 fps in the advanced settings, the encoding failed again, showing the same error message as above. I'll try my old AviSynth profile with the AssumeFPS(29.970) command.

Yes, you have to choose convert dts to ac3 in the encoding tab. However, this may just grab the dts core and convert that file to ac3. I dont believe it will grab the HD part of the track. Im not entirely sure.

I think there is a bug in .4.8 in that if a file has a .pcm track, if it is not selected, the actually command that is executed still selects that track and ignores the ac3 track or other that was actually selected. I have not checked if this was an error in .4.9 test.

But TrueHD does not contain a DTS core. TrueHD has an AC3 derivative.

Ahh my apologies. I was thinking of dts-hd. I didnt pay careful enough attention. Ill take a peek at one of my blu-rays when I get home from work later today and see if i cant find an answer to the question as posted.

I do know that your player should be able to pull out the ac3 file on the fly. However, if your looking to save space, I think the only way to deal with the issue in blu-rip currently is to choose "Use AC3, and then say 640kbit CBR which will be comparable to a core file after it has been converted and compressed. These findings are simply from a quick look however. Ill take a closer look this evening.

One last thought, try right clicking on the actual stream. As I recall hawk put some advanced features in that way. But this may not yield any results. Just a bit of info that popped into mind.

Maybe hawk can shed light on if this will be included in the future, or already is and we just don't see it?

I finally came across an ac3hd file while ripping my collection. What you do is as I suspected. Right click on the hd stream, then click advanced options. From there you can pick bit rates, the file type you are converting to, as well as a -core option. I did not test if the -core works on an ac3hd file. However, the option is there so feel free to test this.

I use BluRip mainly for extra materials, and I always use CRF for that, usually --preset medium --crf 21.

OK. But think of it this way: extra materials very often contain footage from an interview (usually full 16:9 or 4:3 frame) and from the movie (AR anything from full frame to 2.40:1). When Autocrop is done sampling a few frames, BluRip uses the lowest cropping factor for encoding, correct? So, when sampling frames for cropping, why would the sampling process continue when it hits a full frame, i.e. a frame with a cropping factor of 0/0?

For example, when Autocrop takes 5 samples the results are:
#1 - 0/0 (full frame, interview footage)
#2 - 82/82 (clip from the movie)
#3 - 0/0
#4 - 82/82
#5 - xx000/xx000 (completely black frame at the very end of the file)

Since it's obvious that BluRip can't use a cropping factor of 82/82 because the file also contains full-frame material - thus forcing a cropping factor of 0/0- there's no need to continue sampling frames after sample #1.

Nope, I mean it's always the last sample. If I chose 5 samples, it's the 5th one. If I chose 7 samples, it's the 7th one.

I don't mind having a 20GB movie if it means I keep 100% quality, but if I can save 16GB and only lose about 5% then I'm happy.

There's something wonky about how BluRip handles PCM audio. If I select "Untouched audio", the process fails at mux stage because the PCM audio file is faulty. If BluRip is set to re-encode audio, the process fails when Aften (or whatever BluRip uses) tries to use the demuxed audio file, again because there's something wrong with the audio file.

With advanced audio settings you can choose output format und set optional demux parameters. Maybe this helps.

I think you used a crf profile?
2-pass maybe even more.

If size doesn't matter und you only want a mkv file just use "untouched video" option.
But in most cases crf 18 or 19 should create a file that's almost like the original. Animated movies normally get a relative small file but still have good quality.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant; some of the parameters are very likely incorrect.

Actually just the other day I ripped a movie that had pcm (Up maybe? I dont remember. The point of this post, however is that it did indeed complete. I have often times received errors, but .4.8 was able to mux untouched pcm as well as a dts or ac3 (cant remember which) into the final mkv.

However, despite this as far as I know eac3to does not officially support pcm. I know several movies I own (particularly pirates of the Caribbean) have been 'wonky' as you stated, also known as error code "x".

Just my 2 cents.
