the insane profile is mean to be insanely slow. the new profile have a lot of bframes and use the NEW b-adapt patch (at b-adapt 2) .. so IS slow

just select the extreme profile, would be a "lot" faster (without dropping quality)

But is this also why it would only be utilizing 1 core instead of 4? because i just tried beta 3 on the 'extreme' profile instead of the 'insane' one and it still appears to only be using the 1 core instead of all 4 for x264.exe *32 in the process monitor.

thanxs for fix subtitle in queque :)
I fuond a posible Bug in audio encoding when te source is rmvd (DirectShowSource)
if i select in advanced tab DSSxAudio and DSSxA/V the resulting movie have two audio track, and in temp folder audio1.mp3 and Au.mp3, (realy the same audio track) and two were muxed in the avi oversize the output
if only select DSSxA/V the audio not be procesed and i got an error i think the erro is in DirectShowSource("C:\avis\rmdv\MASNUEVAS\Au\Au.rmvb",fps=,convertfps=true,video=false), specifically in "fps=," have no value and trow avisinth error (when Also select DSSxAudio this line is DirectShowSource("C:\avis\rmdv\MASNUEVAS\Au\Au.rmvb") and no error)

on your mkv input file automkv (better said: mediainfo) is unable to extract any aspect ratio, so when the encoding start automkv will use the width/heght AR and so why 1.5
try this: in advanced settings on "Force PAR in avs" write 16:9 and select 16:9 as force muxing dar

no problem whith avi because fps parameter have valid value for example "fps=23.976," and in rmvb "fps=," in mkvauidio.avs
if only select DSSxA/V the audio not be procesed and i got an error i think the erro is in DirectShowSource("C:\avis\rmdv\MASNUEVAS\Au\Au.rmvb",fps=,convertfps=true,video=false), specifically in "fps=,"

BUG: If source video doesn't have an audio track, AutoMKV will assume one exists anyway, name it after the file, and auto-select it, potentially causing problems when various elements can't find it.when converting audio ?
The bug is that AutoMKV is, annoyingly, assuming that an audio track exists when one does not, and is auto-selecting it (meaning that VirtualDub expects to begin working on one) -- it's one more darned thing I have to remember shut each and every single time when I'm working with dozens of videos that do not have audio tracks.

Not meaning to sound like a broken-record, but I didn't get an answer for this one (below), and am still stumped as to what's going on. Is....

1) ...the string wrong?
2) ...the MSU filter busted? (Possible, but unlikely.)
3) ...the string being improperly implemented by AutoMKV (i.e., it's a real bug)?
4) ...something else?

Well, either that, or "convertToRGB32.MSU_Smart_Deblocking(1, 1, 1, 1).converttoyv12()" doesn't properly implement the MSU_Smart_Deblocking filter that I've been having trouble with lately -- I set up a test in which I degrained a film-clip to an oversized CQ1 XviD file, then used that as input for deblocking, and had no settings chosen at all for anything *except* the MSU_Smart_Deblocking script above pasted into filters. Instead of cleaning up the macro blocks, it made them far worse. The MSU site (http://www.compression.ru/video/deblocking/smartdeblocking_en.html) has an AviSynth job control of:

Testing: MSU source (http://www.compression.ru/video/deblocking/smartdeblocking_en.html) ...and: Grain-bomb movie clip (http://tinyurl.com/5646r2)

-- The clip is very short; encoding XviD 2passInsane will only take a few minutes on a single-processor Pentium4.

Procedure:
1) Input the grainy clip. Select Film for deinterlacer, MVdegrain3, and FFTD3Filter(sigma=3). XviD/AVI; constant-quality CQ (1 or 2); "Specify Quality"=100% (It needs cropping and resizing too, but we don't need to worry about that for a test.)

-- This combination will rip every last speck of grain out of the film. Resultant file is oversized, and severely chroma-blocked.

2) Now use the resultant file as input. Set deinterlacer to None and uncheck MVdegrain3. Keep XviD/AVI. (Optional: select 2-pass--Extreme or Insane, and select "same as source" for output size.) .....Cut/paste the MSU deblocker script into Filters, and start encoding.

-- The output will be total garbage (quality gets worse), because something somewhere is wrong.

Forced DAR and wrote in Force PAR, both 16:9, still getting the same AR. Is it impossible to get a video to play at a specified AR? If its just number that gets read by a player to tell it what to play at, then it should be as simple as typing it in, but no matter what i do (tried MKVToolNix) the file refuses to allow any changes to the AR.

Is this a problem with the mkv container, x264 encoder, or video technology in general?

For a 16:9 video you need to be putting 32:27 into the "Force PAR" box. The PAR is a ratio between the actual pixel resolution of the video and the display aspect ratio. Consequently, for a 720x480 4:3 video the PAR would be 8:9.

I try my files on mplayer, zplayer, and VLC and they all play the native AR at 1.5. I can manually set it to 16:9 and it looks fine, but a dvd player isnt going to know to do that. VLC is internal, zplayer uses haali media splitter + matroska splitter, and i dont know what mplayer uses.

edit: a member suggested i use mkvtoolnix to change the AR, so i did and ran it through avinaptic which told me it was now 16:9, but zplayer and mplayer dont play it correctly, however VLC did. Do you think this is a problem with the two splitters? I wish i knew how to figure out which splitter it was using, that could be the problem.

Anyways, whatever mkvtoolnix does to change the AR, you should consider implementing that since the force DAR doesnt work.

I'm using Windows XP X64, so even if they do still crap out it wouldn't surprise me if it's more a M$ thing. If the problems remain I'll post the logs.

One more concern about the movie, avinaptic is telling me that my x264 MKV is in YUY2, but DVDs are always in YV12 and there were no colorspace adjustments made during lagarith decompression (fast recompress in virtualdubmod) or under the colorspace conversion box of automkv. Does x264 convert to YUY2 by default?

YUV means that the video represents pixels with brightness and two colours instead of red, green and blue. And to pre-empt a question, the 4:2:0 bit tells you how, if any, sub-sampling is done. In case that raises a further question, Google can point to lots of information.

I tried your reccommendation to FORCE MUX DAR to its correct AR (16:9) but im still getting the 1.5 AR. Why isnt it working?
Are you trying to encode 720x480 to 16:9? If yes, have you checked/enabled anamorphic encoding?

I have recently moved to the latest beta after audio sync issues with 0.95c.
The main issue that i have encountered so far is that the encoding process is really slow with only 25% CPU utilization of my Q6600.
This means that movies are taking for ever to encode with the latest version when compared to 0.95c.

Is there any setting that i should change to allow the program to run at 100% cpu.,

I had upgraded x264 to 967 and I updated the profiles. Beta 4 is working fine.

Ok, returning to the burning subtitles. Just for giggles I tried running passes using the closed captioned subtitles, which are the first, and the normal subtitles, which are the second on Apocalypto. For some reason I think this has to do with whether the subtitles are the first subtitle stream or not. I don't know why that would matter since AVIsynth shouldn't be differentiating between the two.

But the results are strange. The first subtitle stream burned into the video just fine. The second one, the one that matters to me, did not. I get no subtitles burned into the video. Very, very strange.

This evening I will try running Apocalypto through DVD Decrypter and strip out everything but the streams I want.

@Honeyko, i have tested the msu_deblocker and i got NO errors. BUT i don't use it with mvdegrain or other filter.
I have said this twice already now: My test involved a pre-created file with no other settings. AutoMKV didn't produce any "errors" while using the deblocker, but my concern is that the AVIsynth script wasn't being properly implemented when cut/pasted into Filters (as recommended) because the output video quality was worse than the input.
sorry pal , but i don't have time to debug some strange combination of filters.
I wish I could impress upon you the idea that degraining followed by deblocking and/or deringing would not be considered a "strange" sequence to many people because that is the way one fixes poor quality sources.

I have three machines running XP and all fail to "Preview" properly in the "manual crop/resize". I"m running AutoMKV 0.95. Sometimes the "Preview" feature works properly. However about 50% of the files fail. The file either works or fails. I get several types of failures:

Failure 1: same as expressed in Post 157 .. After pressing the "Preview" button the movie fails to render and I get a weird graphic similar to Post 157. When this failure happens, I can press the "Preview Resized" button and the movie renders properly in the "resized" window. If I skip the preview/resize process the movie will encode properly.

Failure 2: I press the "preview" button and and MKV hangs ... it fails to render and continues "buffering" .. When this occurs I have no button control to escape ... I can only bring up task manager and kill the process. The same vob file can be viewed with vlc. I can also properly convert the same vob file using MKV if I skip the "preview" process.

Failure 3: I press the "preview" button and MKV crashes. I've found that this is a bad rip. I had usually ripped with "ripit4me" but found that this rips often have audio sync problems and/or "preview" problems. I now try to copy the file with DVDShrink first .. It DVDShrink fails, I first rip using DVDFab and then run it thru DVDShrink .... This seems to eliminate this type of crash in MKV and also eliminates the audio synch problem on this DVD.

I've tried copying the suggested files to the root directory .. but this had no effect. I've also tried several different mpeg2 decoders .. Was first using descaler, then tried Stinkys mpeg2 decoder and now am usng the GPL MPEG1/2 decoder. These changes had no impact on the problem. Is there a particular decoder that works better?

Yes copying the file to the root as suggested did partially resolve the problem.

Now when the preview button is pressed for 'short clips' (the test VOB I created was 1 minute long) the preview popup opens but the actual preview pane doesn't display properly (see Preview.jpg). Interestingly when you press 'preview resized a second windows is opened which does show the clip (see Resized.jpg).

For longer clips (full length vobs) a timeout error is now reported and the popup fails to open (see Error.jpg).

Have also found that with .97 Beta 2 that when you modify any of the values on the preview pane such as a change in the crop value when the new resize is calculated that either the width or height gets set to '0' and an error is reported when a preview is attempted (see Error2.jpg). This did not occur in versin .95.

Any thoughts what might be going on?

Well, one of my prior concerns is taken care of with Beta 4: The job queue used to cause Automkv to crash after the first encode was finished (no notice of error or reason why the crash happened was ever in the log... Automkv simply shut down). With Beta 4, the queue works! For some reason, however, Automkv now runs two instances of itself once the second job begins. The first instance appears to be doing nothing at this point (it appears to be sitting idle) while the second instance is running the second queued job. Interesting, however, is that a third instance doesn't open when the third queued job is being worked on... the second instance simply loads the .ini file and proceeds as you'd expect.

Also, the moment the first job is loaded, I receive a command prompt window which reads: "Queue1 .ini Start Kill." For the second job, a new command line stating "Queue2.ini Start Kill" appears, and so on. These prompts also contain the paths to my installation to Automkv Beta 4.

I'm not noting any of this as "bug" behavior, mind you: Again, the queue works. I'm running the third job that I had set up last night without any intervention on my part. I haven't checked the quality of the processed files yet (my system may be dual-core, but it still slows down and becomes unstable whenever I try to view and encode AVC files at the same time), so for now I'm just noting it as "new" behavior. Hopefully it's the behavior you were expecting!

In my previous installments of Automkv, any changes made to "Advanced Settings" (Anamorphic, MOD16 crop, ect) weren't saved with the "Save Settings" button on the Basic tab. I'm happy to report this behavior has changed under Beta 4. My changes have been noted and remembered! It's never bothered me to go through and change them with the start of each new project, but I'm happier with not having to.

One thing that does concern me is the saving of modified X264 profiles. Both times I've done it (even under Beta 4) for some reason it doesn't save the new profile as an XML. I've had to change the filename manually to add the .XML extension. Once done, Automkv recognizes the new profile and will load it.

Some of the movies I'm working on now used to have sound sync issues. Once my encodes finish I'll check them and post the logs if they still choke. I'm very impressed with how things are shaping up with Automkv, however. Thanks for the hard work!

[Edit] While I've got you on the horn, is there a possibility to add the option of detecting forced subtitle streams? I know that I can rip my forced subs seperately and use those in Automkv, but it'd be nice to already have that feature handy in the GUI. I loved the way DVD2VCD used to do it... but handbrake's method is also good, as was Autogk's. I usually burn forced subs into the video stream since I'm playing them back using WMC on my HTPC, and it doesn't always detect the subs properly otherwise.

CRF-16 is a modified profile based off of the ConstantQuality_CRF profile packaged with Automkv. The only mod is changing it from Q18 to Q16, since my eyes still perceive blocking artifacts using CRF18. I screwed up the aspect ratio on the final file (my bad), but the sound sync issues are the same from previous attempts with Automkv 96c.

Second problem movie is not playable at all (Windows media player states codec issues despite playing AVC with other files, while Nero Showtime 3 states that the file is corrupt):

While the log lists my operating system as Windows Server 2003, it's Windows XP Professional X64. It's a fresh install (I like to reformat and reinstall every couple of months to prevent issues with old codecs and leftover program fragments that are left behind with a normal uninstall), using an AMD 4600+ X2 Athlon and 4GB of PC400 DDR memory. Dunno if that's relevant, but thought it wouldn't hurt to throw in just in case anything listed has proven to be a headache with other users.

Ok, I've pretty much verified. I ran my Apocalypto test sequence through DVD Decrypter and modified it so that all the subtitle streams are removed except for the one I want. I remapped that stream to 0x20. I also used ifoedit to remove the entries for all the other subtitle streams since DVD Decrypter does not do that. The result is that the subtitles are rendered properly into the video. I don't know why it would do this but it appears that it makes a difference which stream is selected.

I have three machines running XP and all fail to "Preview" properly in the "manual crop/resize". I"m running AutoMKV 0.95.
What happens when you use the most recent beta?

(I've never seen preview work, btw; but I never use it for resizing -- I always take snapshots while watching the video in a player, then zoom up the snapshot in a photo-tool, such as the ImageViewer w/Photoshop, and count rows and columns of bad pixels -- there's almost always a scummy row of bad pixels next to the "dark" that should be cropped off too. I never, ever trust any automatic feature.)

Don't mess with qpmin/qpmax without good reason.

Subme 8 doesn't exist, the max is 7.

Thread-input is implied by --threads auto.

AQ-mode 2 is the default, you don't need to specify it. Same with --psy-rd 1.0, your partitions line, your aq-strength line, and your keyint line.

Bitrate is specified in kilobits, not bits. 964407 is ridiculously high; 964 megabits per second.

I am going to update the profile accordingly with his suggestions, but I am curious about how I specify the bitrate to 964 or similar ?
