hi Buzzqw,
Just another suggestion (I do not remember if I already had told you this one) :
when executing the MSDos commands, is it possible to execute them reduced... because I (maybe other people) work during the encoding... so each time I get a new window that splashes on the screen I do not pay attention and I continue writing ... and it would be annoying to restart an encoding only if I close a MSDos window. (and also because when it splashes the active window is the MSDOS one and not my office document)
thanks a lot for your work

I second the request for an option for all encoder windows to start minimized. As for anime, heres what I do in those situations. Rip the whole disk to hdd using your favorite ripper. Then use mpeg2cut2 to open all relevant vobs and save out the episodes as separate files. Use those as automkv source. Make sure mpeg2cut2 is set up to output vob and source audio. Use gspot to check its output before using them for conversion.

Hi, been using automkv sucessfully for some time now to archive my dvd library. So far some 45 dvd's encoded with no issues. However around 10 are presenting me with problems. Basically the encoded doesn't fully complete. The file size is only around 25-50% of what it should be and the output is scrambled as a result. In the temp working directory the input vob is only 873mb, yet the file I specified to encode is 5.69gb. Log below

@cwilliams255. I'm trying to get my head arround all the settings to backup my dvd's to high quality. What influenced your decision to do 2 pass's at such a large size. Wouldn't CRF at q18 be more superior? Also you have auto-resize which is doing strange things due to the large capacity available?
cwilliams255
21st January 2009, 09:31
I'm not really sure what influenced my decision, I just played with the settings until I found some that looked "dvd" quality. I had a file size that I was aiming for since I have around 200 DVD's to archive. I'm no expert at these things and couldn't find much information online about what settings I should go for
buzzqw
21st January 2009, 10:04
yep.. in cwilliams255 situation auto resize is useless, better to fit to "Autocrop Only"
also a crf 18 COULD be faster, but bigger and not obviusly better

In DVD -> AVI conversion....what's the best option to set in this case:
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6089/immagineeq5.jpg
i ask this because if i set DSS or FFmpegS instead to leave default i can use divx codec 6.8.5. pro (not the 264 one!!)....
if i use default option i can use only xvid

In DVD -> AVI conversion....what's the best option to set in this case:
don't use ANY of these options!
these options are best suited for avi/mkv to mkv/mp4 conversion
for mpeg2 to avi (as is dvd) let's automkv use it's default options

P.S. detta diversamente .. non toccare :)

...capisco...ma,sai,a me l' XViD non piace proprio...trovo che il DiVX sia superiore in TUTTO rispetto al xvid..

please write in english (or pm me in italian)
and.. what mean "you prefer divx over xvid" ?
the options about dss/ffmpegsource don't fit on "divx" ...
you must select Divx as codec.. not as "decoding option"

Ah right im learning lots here. Whats the average settings people use for high quality? Also If say crf 20 gave me a 3gb file and instead I encoded with 2 passes at a 3gb target would the two passes give me better quality than the CRF method?
buzzqw
21st January 2009, 19:46
Also If say crf 20 gave me a 3gb file and instead I encoded with 2 passes at a 3gb target would the two passes give me better quality than the CRF method?
short answer: yes, given a fixed file size, a 2 pass encoding will deliver more quality than 1 pass crf. Even if the difference would be questionable...

yes he is serious. long/complex folder names can give it issues. The best way to avoid problems is to give it a folder on a lower part of the drive. I use something like E:/automkv. and then do it all there.

Hi guys, any idea whats wrong here. It outputted a file that was only 62mb! (the same also occured for episodes IV and V). In the temp folder .264 file is 55.6mb and audio 6.3mb. Is it having trouble reading the vob files? The vob file in the temp folder is only 84mb yet input is 6.63gb. I've seen this happen on a lot of my DVD's and do not know what is causing it

Does anybody have some experience with conversion of audio (concert) DVD? I used AutoGK for this before but AutoMKV seems to be better (into XviD video). So if anybody has some default settings for this purpose I would like to test it. Thanks for anything.

Hi Firestone and welcome to the forum
you can simply copy audio track or encode to Nero, in hi quality (>0.50)

Thx for your invitation. I was writing about music DVD (audio and video as well) conversion as a one unit. I preferred "copy original" function (if source has 5.1 audio) for audio because I think that perfect audio make solid concert. Anyway I was thinking about settings for video.
So I search opportunity what kind of functions/settings do I have to use to reach best quality for problematic concert records (too much dark at the stage, out of the blue lightning, ... poor conditions and frequent changes)?

24th January 2009, 20:56
i will start with a 2 pass blanced, or for dark videos with 2 pass sap scure, don't touch filtering
then, after looking at encoding, select the filter (from fluxsmooth, to degrain, to qmf...)

Thanks for your information. I tried settings that you can find as a attachement (insane quality, no filters)
This settings is for 185 min long concert but seems to be that AutoMKV choose a little bit small output resolution and quality isn't too bad but - maybe we will reach better quality :) What you think what I have to change for the next attempt? Maybe some combination of more than one filters or something else...
Thanks for anything.

This might seem like a simple question, but I can't figure it out and searching didn't really do any good.
When a .ac3 file is converted to MP3 (lame), what is actually doing the conversion? I know that an mkvaudio.avs file is created that is processed by VirtualDubMod, but how does that actually invoke lame? Is Lame embedded in AutoMKV?
I'm having a problem where the mp3 file generated is bad if I encode to stereo. It sounds like the audio is in super slow motion. The .ac3 file is created by running DgIndex on a ripped DVD. I've encoded this DVD to Xvid on a previous version of AutoMKV without any problems (but my system was reloaded since then). The problem also happens if I let AutoMKV process the entire thing, feeding it the vts*.ifo file. If I encode the same thing but select mono instead of stereo, it sounds fine. And I can convert other .ac3 files just fine it's just this one DVD (TV Series Friends Season 1 to be exact). The mkvaudio.avs file looks exactly like every other mkvaudio file except for the name of the audio file of course. This happens using version .971 .981 and .982.
I was hoping to figure how the audio got encoded so I could try to figure out if I have something out of date, a bad setting somewhere etc. I'd post a log file but it looks just like every other log file I have.

In the last version or two I've had problems using the preview to help figure out the cropping values for videos.
The preview fails because of what looks like a badly created line in preview.avs
movie = tfm(movie,d2v="C:\_Working\RIPS\MainMovie\FRIENDS_S1D1E3\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.d2v"tfmpp.s+).tdecimate()
The odd thing is, if I check the HQ Deint box before doing he preview, the proper line is created.
movie = tfm(movie,d2v="C:\_Working\RIPS\MainMovie\FRIENDS_S1D1E3\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.d2v").tdecimate()
Any idea of what is wrong? I did notice a few posts back about the path being too long or complicated. Could that be a factor? My path is fairly long.
The deinterlacer is set to Film with Auto field Order with PP=6 if that helps.

I tested the new version and theese seem to be still present:
1. When converting from DVD ripped to a HDD folder, and selecting "All Audio Tracks" to convert, the language for the audio tracks is 'und' in resulting mkv
2. The Romanian(rum) audio tracks are set as (rom) in the resulting mkv (when selected individually)
Anybody else has these problems, or is it just me?
Thank you

@gasnyder
maybe your ac3 file isn't a proprer 5.1, or it's a fake 5.1
in that case the "downmix" procedure to stereo will cause audio distortion
also, maybe a bad rip ?
more, try with dpl, and dplII, but i thing you will got the same problem
you can also try to encode with besweet for error checking
@pdanpdan
thanks
will be fixed in next version
@noee
was wanted, the difference is only in bitrate limit (around 20Mb limit)
but will deal better hardware compatibility
@smithdc
post the log
@done75
you don't have to select colormatrix
automkv will insert colormatrix when needed AND only when needed

Ok than... This log was from convertion of 66 min long concert from MPEG2 to XviD. I used 512px as a width resolution and AC3 audio file as a audio for final converted file. Here you can watch result (http://lukas-kuzel.net/bin/sample.avi) (7.26 MB). What do you think that I can improve in settings except enlarge final size of file? Many thanks that you are helping me!

Thanks, it seems better. One minor point... when you enable CQ, the Constant Quality Mode window/dialogue box shows up in the top, left corner of my display instead of the middle of the screen.

@Buzzq
Thanks for the reply. I did try DPL and DPLII with the same results as Stereo. Only Mono worked. The .ac3 file plays just fine in VLC also.
I have used AutoMKV on this DVD before so I'm pretty sure the AC3 would be ok. It was on a version that didn't dump the version into the IART field of the AVI. I will try another DVD from the set and see how that goes.
In my original post I asked what tool actually is doing this conversion. Is lame compiled into AutoMKV? Or is VirtualDubMod calling it from somewhere?
Also, do you have any ideas about the preview question I asked right after the original question that you responded to?
