try HDC, you will be surprised ;)

BHH

HDC is nice, but I am missing two features in HDC, which I am using in AutoMKV (maybe I should post this in HDC thread):
1. AUTO Deinterlace - in AutoMKV I can set AUTO deint, which is also default; in HDC I have to manually perform Deint test for every movie, which is much less effective
2. Different settings for two audio channels - in AutoMKV I can set different audio settings for two audio streams and I am really using this feature (e.g. I am directly copying AC3 or DTS stream as audio 1 and recoding stereo stream in diferent language to AAC as audio 2); this is not possible in HDC

yes, you are right at both point

and for 1) i am working on it
for 2) , i will not implement this feature in short time

these priorities are very fine, because the second feature is less important also for me ;)

Automkv don't detect subs on mkv

USE HDCONVERTTOX, it will allow subs

BHH

Wow. I have only been watching this subscribed thread for so long that I missed this. I'll check it out!

buzzqw

automkv ISN'T slow since it's a gui. X264 can be slow... and x264 ISN't SLOW

it's the directshow decoder that's is slow..

How do I use a high quality deinterlacer?

usually by checking the appropriate check

anyway ivtc is already optimized, so even if you check HQ Deint , the deinterlace applyed would be the same as not checked HQ Deint

dont' use autoresize and CRF encoding, isn't a good choice

just use autocrop only and CRF encoding

and, more important, automkv was replaced by HDConvertToX, my new application

please, use it

FFmpegSource incorrectly decoded a 23.976 video as 25fps and got x264 to encoded it as 25fps. Is there any way to fix that?

DSS A/V correctly encoded it as 23.976, but it suffers from the slow framerate problem in the beginning of the encode.

post your sample and problem to ffmpegsource thread

(using HDC you can edit the queue and change framerate)

From HDC forum
anyway on avi/mkv source you MUST specify the muxing AR in advanced settings)

This fixed up anyway after I picked --engage keep_bitstream_ar_info. Hoping this is not a bad thing? I did not know how to calculate the AR. Other xvids I have done worked fine with "Force muxing DAR" set to Automatic, go figure?

I wanted automkv to encode at best quality for a number of videos and not care about the size. For this I was advised in this forum to pick Pure constant quality mode and set it to 18. If done so does it actually try to keep the raw quality or is picture quality sacrificed at all? I ask since for some videos I ended up with a file size mkv file almost 1.5 times the size of the original....

I cant seem to figure out why I dont get results like some really small 1 CD videos I have seen. Does the smaller frame mean better overall picture quality? I always thought its the other way round. Guessing here that lower frame size give more bitrate to play with?

thanks

@Mrsash
I''m no expert myself, but I have never bothered with CQ and all that...I just stick to setting the bit rate manually. I usually test a cut piece of the original then encode several times at differing bit rates to get the file size vs quality I need. For TV shows I find that 750 kbps is adequate and even for good original quality films (not HD though), I achieve a 'no loss' encode at 1200kbps with a end file size incl audio at around 1GB. It does of course all depend on what your watching it on though!

I suggest yu leave AR as original, Deint auto and auto everything else yu can, don't use any filters, and experiment with the bit rate only - that's what I consider to be 'page 1' in AutoMKV, then yu can go on to mess abt with other settings from there...This is using x264.

I was a bit early to call it,it seems. I was working with a sample of the original and found the AR was right after automkv worked on it but did not work with the original file. I do leave AR to original on page 1. The muxing is a bit hard for me on the second page. If my movie is 720x304 can someone advise me the muxing AR I put? Is it 2.36?

vdub says invalid arguments to function "Bob"

You might have to do something like this:

movie = bob(movie)

I found the same issue when trying to use AutoMKV to decimate 60i AVCHD material to 24P. I had to specify as such:

movie = tfm(movie).tdecimate()

i can't provide a full guide to dvd backup.

i can only suggest to try using automkv (or hdc), read the threads, and ask about doubt

usually a dvd backup is easy as :

1) rip your dvd to hd
2) launch automkv
3) open the video_ts.ifo
4) select container, codec video, codec audio and size
5) select final size
6) select audio/subs tracks
7) start

It appears the following is crashing virtualdub

03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].DeleteComments(1);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].AdjustChapters(1);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].SetMode(0);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].SetInterleave(1,500,1,0,0);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].SetClipMode(1,1);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].SetConversion(0,0,0,0,0);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].SetVolume();
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].SetCompression();
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].EnableFilterGraph(0);
03:31:22 VirtualDub.stream[1].filters.Clear();

I only have one audio track. I am not sure why VD is trying to mux this additional stream.

I asked this some time ago, but until now nobody could help me:

Why is HybridFupp not available as resizer in the newer Automkv versions? It was perfect for some old anime (good colors, no artefacts etc.). I can still find the file in the automkv folder, but the option doesn't show up in the resize menu.

Will there be new versions of automkv in the future or is HDConvertToX the new version?

Has development of AutoMKV ceased?

(I still prefer to rip XviD/AVI for most TV-capture projects, particularly cartoons, since there are so many filters available.)

hybridfupp was removed because of incompatibility with recent version of plugins

HDConvertTox is the future of AutoMKV, as now it do much more and is more stable.

well it do some less.. but the future is HDC (stable queue, good support to hd format, multi audio e subs selections, easy codec configuration..)
