Hi. Why is HybridFupp not available as resizer in the newer Automkv versions? It was perfect for some old anime (good colors, no artefacts etc.). I can still find the file in the automkv folder, but the option doesn't show up in the resize menu.

Hi everybody! I begin to use AutoMKV (version 0.98.4). [...] I using Windows Vista x64 and I want to use x64 version of encoder (may be better performance) and when I replace on x64 version of codec it don`t want to coding. Please help, how to decide this problem?

Same problem here using Win XP64, on Amd dual core: after Automkv starts encoding with x264(x64 version), it stops after one second giving no output.
Using the 32 bit version ok x264everything works fine.
Is this normal?

I've tried reinstalling AviSynth, those errors disappeared but still x264 x64 doesn't work, several dos windows appear and disappear in one second, and no video encoding is done
maybe x64 applications must stay in "Program Files" instead of "Program Files (x86)" folder?

I am using AutoMKV 0984 to encode VOBs to x264/mp4s for my Archos605. Everything is fine but I would like to increase saturation of the videos and I haven’t been able to figure out how to do it.

I have Avisynth 2.5.7 with Tweak.dll in both the /exe/filter folder and in the Program files/Avisynth2.5/plugins folder.

I tried typing Tweak(sat=2.0) in the AutoMKV Filters dropdown box but that did no good.

I found the .lvl .avs and. avsi files in the /exe/script folder. I believe the filters in the dropdown filters list are connected to the .lvl files but I couldn’t find how to write a .lvl file or any explanation of the relationship between the .lvl and .avs files and I expect both are needed. I tried to figure out how to modify the filters list but I couldn’t find that either.

If anyone could give me any clues to accomplish what I want I sure would appreciate it.

neroAacDec.exe -if %inputfile -of %1fixed1.wav
neroAacEnc.exe -q 0.35 -if %1fixed1.wav -of %1audio.mp4

I'm curious why does setting a resolution of 704x400 and anamorphic encoding and specifing the AR to 1.7777777 will create a messed up AR encode. How come 720x480 anamorphic works perfectly?

Atak_Snajpera

Because 704x400 is already 16:9 !!! (square pixels)

First of all! Why do you need anamorphic encoding??????????????

Why does 720x480 work perfectly for 16:9?
because it belongs to SD-TV/DVD standard. Anamorphic encoding was used due to fixed resolution.

Hmmm.. Why didn't I find this package before. It's making my life A LOT easier. Right now, I am busy reading all my DVD's into my computer, so I can play them trough my HTPC. I just rip the main movie, with the best audio track (DTS mostly). And now I can convert this to MKV/H264 with the touch of a few buttons. You have made me a happy man.

Right now, I have the following question though:

As I want to preserve most of the original quaility (I realise I will always loose a bit due to the convertion from one lossy format to the other), I was wondering what would be considered a good quality setting. Right now, I just set the "specify quality" to 80%. The outcome is really nice. A 6,7GB 2hrs concert with DTS, will drop to around 4.3GB. I can easily live with that. but what do you think?
Am I an idiot, setting the quality so high? I hear of people using 70%. What is considered the percentage, that will (more or less) give the same quality as the original DVD (providing the DVD is decently mastered/recorded one)?

botcherO
14th April 2009, 08:04
I think you are wasting a lot of storage space (well, which is nowadays cheap anyway, but...). :)
With x264 you can shrink a Movie with a barely loss of Quality to about half the size, which for a typical 4,7GB-Disk will result without the extras in a 1,5 GB Movie incl. one AC3-Audiostream.

Which Encoder settings do you use? I use Constant Quality with an Quantitizer ranging from 17-22 (the lower, the better the Output Quality), depending if it's an Anime or an normal Movie.

tfhfony
14th April 2009, 09:14
Well, this is the command line I end up using:

22:02:32 Command Line 1' Pass X264: C:\Documents and Settings\TFH\Bureaublad\AutoMKV0983\exe\encoder\x264.exe --pass 1 --crf 20.00 --stats "J:\Music\Boudewijn de Groot\Tour\temp\.stats" --progress --keyint 250 --bframes 3 --qpmin 10 --qpmax 51 --no-psnr --ref 3 --filter -1,-1 --subme 9 --direct auto --vbv-bufsize 14000 --vbv-maxrate 25000 --me umh --no-ssim --level 4.0 --weightb --b-adapt 2 --no-chroma-me --8x8dct --threads auto --thread-input --aud --aq-mode 1 --aq-strength 1 --psy-rd 1.1:1.0 --sar 1:1 --output "J:\Music\Boudewijn de Groot\Tour\temp\movie.264" "J:\Music\Boudewijn de Groot\Tour\temp\movie.avs"

So CRF is set to 20, which is probably related to the 80% quality factor I enter into AutoMKV.

The only way I've found to get the output how I want is to test and test and test. For DVDs I use MPEG2Cut (it googles)

I find a representative part of the movie I am gonna decode (I try and cut a 20MB section with a close up facial expression and/or greys and blacks and/or some fast moving action) and then run abt 4 diff encodes on it. Primarily, I just change the bit rate (1500 works for me but I ain't got the best TV in the world)...I don't bother with any quality or size settings since it didn't give me what I wanted. I rarely touch the audio. I then put the 4 recoded files into 4 x VLCs, quartered on the screen, and play them all at the same time - yu can really see then what you've done.

The only way to learn what effect each setting has is to test them - it's a long process of course but when you're done you'll be ripping great stuff in very small portable files with ease.

Portability is not really an issue for me. Quality is. I don't have a huge TV, but my Loewe Xelos 37" LCD has a nice image, and I do want to enjoy the movies/concerts I watch to the fullest :)

But, the idea of just cutting a few scenes and encode it a few times does sound quite good. I might do that next weekend.

Still, I'd like to hear other peoples comments in regards to the quality settings :)

Hi,

I am quite new to video encoding, so my question is very basic. Are there any recommendations for output sizes or bitrates? I want to rip and reencode my DVD collection and store it on device like Popcorn hour or WD HD TV. And I am not sure what size of MPEG4 file to choose for output. I plan to use MKV with X264 and AAC.

Another problem is, that I do not know whether to choose different sizes for movies with for example only one stereo audio stream and with for example two 5.1 audio streams and one subtitles? How can I recognize how big is output audio stream or size of subtitles within MKV? I tried MediaInfo and other software but they do not say how big is audio stream or subtitles.

Thanks!

Choose 1/3 DVD 1490 Mb with x264 in mkv Autocrop only, AAC (0,35 for 5.1 and 0,4-0,5 for 2.0). Audio stream is about 100-200 Mb for AAC and remain plenty of space for video. I think AAC on Popcorn and WD is a problem because you will hear only 2.0....

Tiberiust

@marklar
See Botcher0 above - without any visible loss of quality I get my DVDs down between 1 and 1.5GB file size using x264 inside MKV and that's with full 6Ch audio stream.
For choosing the size (I specify bitrate) I do as I said in my previous post, test test test until I get the smallest size WITHOUT visible quality loss. Then I encode entire movie at those settings. I followed a lot of advice about using various settings/filters etc to improve quality vs size which was either wrong or simply didn't work for me (none of it from this forum tho!) so I ended up analysing myself, the only way I think.
AviDemux will tell you everything about your audio stream size - a very useful tool to have in your box.

@Gamezcdr
I will check that AAC issue on the devices and mayby I will use OGG or another format.

@Tiberiust
As I want to recode hundreds of DVDs, I do not want to make any experiments with every particular movie and therefore I would do something like:
1,5 GB for movie with single audio stream
1,8 GB for movie with two audio streams with one subtitles
1,3 GB for cartoon movie

What is your preferred audio format?

botcherO
15th April 2009, 18:46
Mostly i stick with the original AC3 or DTS stream, (direct copy). Specially DTS is (only for me i hope ;)) pain in the ass to reencode, due to the lack of good converters which can handle it properly, if AutoMKV fails.:D

Tiberiust

@marklar

In my experience those file sizes should give you an impercetably identical view as as the originals but I cannot stress enough the need to test a sample of films first. I went charging into encoding my DVD collection and ended up re-doing many bcos I didn't take the time to test first...but then I guess this is human nature. :sly: You'll also want to learn about cropping bcos DVDs include the black bars top and bottom as data (it's not blank data, it's actually black pixel data taking up space) - again I haven't really had the time to explore this subject fully so I'll prob end up recoding again!

I nearly always keep the original soundtracks (the english one only for me) bcos whilst my TVs are not so good, my 6.1 audio set up is excellent and DTS and some AC3s don't seem to like being messed with in AutoMKV as botcher0 says. Otherwise I recode to good ol' Lame MP3 since the format is so widespread that I've found it plays everywhere without a single problem. AAC is actually better acc the experts but not as plug-in and run as MP3 in my experience.

Q18 is pretty much as good as it gets ... maintaining original resolution (ie, same number of pixels if you resize an anamorphic movie to square(ish) pixels).
The MKV container allows signalling which is quite a nice feature when mod 16 interferes with the AR.

Various movies will require different quality settings according to your priorities
The amount of time and effort that you are willing to devote to encoding may further effect your choices.

Experimentation is key.

Indeed. Q18 gives some very nice results. Together with the CQ Optimized settings, the results are great. And the final files is about 1/3rd to 1/2 of the original DVD/MPG, while I can't see the difference. The size is a bit on the big side, since I prefer to use DTS tracks, or the original AAC files. Only LPCM I will recode to lame 320kbits.
I spend some time checking the right resolution/crop settings (keeping mod16 in mind of course).

Use Constant_Quality.xml, Pure Constant Quality Mode, with an Quantitizer of 18, and you should get a pretty decent Quality, if the Final File is to big, try to increment the Quantitizer by one. As said, it all depends on your needs. (Burn to 4,7GB or 8,5 GB DVD-R, or just saving to Harddisks [which are cheaper then DVD-R per GB anyways]) :D

EDIT, actually, if I put tweak.dll in the filter folder, no matter what filter I choose in AutoMKV, it won't encode.

Thanks for the reply mate. I tried exactly what you advised but there seems to be a problem. I fed Automkv with a 645 MB avi and the settings you mentioned and it created a 640 Mb Mp4 file. How can this be right? As I understood it should be compressing a fair bit. I left frame size to original and Audio to Nero AAC 0.35(dont exactly know what this 0.35 means) and ended up with a file size almost equal to the original? Go figure. Is something wrong with latest Automkv?

Hm, was the AVI already encoded with an other Codec like Xvid or DVIX? How long is the video (minutes), what resolution has it, and how is the quality of the generated MP4? Is it equal to the AVI or worse? (It can't be better through the nature of digital encoding; if you already lost some picture information on the old encode, you will never get it back.)
If you still have it, try the encode with the DVD, instead of the AVI. So you get the best quality out of it, without artifacts of the old encoding. AutoMKV can rip DVDs too.

But if you just want a smaller file from the AVI, try to encode it with an QRF of 20. But you might reduce the quality, though.

Video was Xvid/Ac3 sterio about 60 minutes 720x(something). Not at home now to check. But I would assume that what xvid needs to encode x264 would need half as much or close but did not expect a saving of only 5 Mb

No, it's rather that you get a much better quality with the same output file size. But reencoding an already with xvid encoded Movie makes, as mentioned, no sense, 'cause you lost the crucial quality anyway in the first place.

If you still have the source, i would recommend you use this for the encode, instead of the xvid.

Hi, I am trying to set up configuration for reencoding of my DVD collection to MPEG4. I plan to use MKV/X264/AAC|AC3. I have only one problem. I would rather set desired bitrate for the video output, or size of video stream instead of the size of the whole output file. I don't care about the size of output file, but important is the quality of video output. How can I set something like average bitrate or stream size for X264 video output in AutoMKV?

Thanks o lot.

Hi,

I am using AutoMKV for DVD to MKV transcoding and it works fine.

But when I wanted to transcode MKV file containing MPEG2 video, 2x AC3 audio and 2x subs to MKV file containing X264 video, I have found the following problem: If I open MKV as input, I see only one audio stream and no subs inside. Any idea? Is it bad idea to use AutoMKV to transcode MKV to MKV with diferent codecs inside?

Thanks!

Automkv don't detect subs on mkv

USE HDCONVERTTOX, it will allow subs

Is HDConvertToX something like successor of AutoMKV? Do you recommend to use it also for DVD to MKV transcoding? I was reading your information, that you plan to stop develop AutoMKV and rather enhance HDConvertToX, but I am not sure about the status of these tools.

Thanks for great tools and instant support!
