Btw. Should putting a check in "use this profile" box in the advanced profiles editing be causing this? I have had this option selected on my encodes because i am using aq strenght 1.0 and mode 2.0..... also i have it selected on version 0.95c using 'aq' strength 5 and sensitivity 13 with no problems

Also I found out last night that when i added the first 2 jobs to the queue with "use this profile" check box selected, and then added the same two jobs (this time to a different file ouput folder), and this time without the "use this profile" bosx selected. I got unstable results being the first encode went fine and the second one didnt and the 3rd one went fine and by then i cancelled the fourth and last job on my queue list.... i run it again and thistime the first 2 jobs went fine. i cancelled the queue and gave up.. lol damnit!

I have another problem now with movies encoding : the sound is not synchronized with the movie.
The DVD files are OK but the mp4 file not.

Any idea?

I was having the same problem a few months ago. the audio was a second or two out of sync after the encode but the dvd files played fine. i found that it was the way i had ripped the dvd..some dvds have a different type of copyright protection on them. don't know if this is the case for you but what i found was that when i ripped them (use dvdfab for decrypting),there was an extra title at the end of the film that was about a second and a half long, about the exact amount of time my encoded file was out of sync... so to fix this issue(if it happens to be the issue with you) open dvd fab (use latest version) select "main movie" then select :Title Start/End Settings and where it says "CHAPTER RANGE" "start" and "end", select the last title on the list ((say it goes fom 1-24) then select "start":24, "End" 24)) then click "OK".....you will find that on the preview screen it will either be playing nothing(black screen) or the credits, or whateva is on the end of the film.. if it is playing nothing (black screen), then this is what is causing your problem....to fix click "Title Start/end settings and the set "Start":1 "End" 23 (not 24 as in this example 24 is the title that we want to remove as it is this last title that is causing the out of sync encode... then proceed to rip the dvd...Hope this Helps

DVD-> WMV with 5.1 and VC1 -> Stream to Xbox 360 (from my WHS)

I have tried using AutoMKV to do this but all I get is a small wmv file about 2,154K big that contains about 5 secs of video.

Why do you edit with Redo...
AutoMKV will read your vob's directly....
Because many films have a lot of extra crap attached that you don't want (additional studio and producer logos and so forth, sometimes with audio types that don't match the film's audio type). More and more DVDs are coming with "deliberately screwy" VOB architecture in an attempt to mess with people trying to rip the video (such as cartoon-series DVDs that have six or eight episodes all in one massive 7gb single "chapter", and sometimes have various "acts" of each episode out of order -- the only way to deal with those is to edit the VOB).

does this solution properly convert AC3 5.1 to AAC 5.1 as it goes from MKV to MP4? I have a wicked sound system and trust me, I haven't a good reproduction using besweet or anything else.

AutoMKV does not convert AC3 5.1 -> AAC 5.1 (only stereo or copy original).
That said, I've done many transcodes with Be_Sweet/Light and never succeeded in 5.1 conversion.
Surround sound rocks... what's your hi-fi system specs ???

I'm trying to get the best quality for a mkv for popcornhour from a dvd

When i choose the popcornhour profile and i don't change anything the onion movie comes out at 600mb and a bitrate of 660 kbps

is this the best quality i can expect , too me it seems the bitrate is a little low

I am just a little confused with the CRF vs 2 pass stuff

Auzentech DTS card with fiber optic output into a Harmon Kardon amp with Polk speakers. I have the original ac3 and the separation is fantastic ... absolutely clear and great spatial effects. Anything I've done with besweet has been muddy at best.

The reason I am doing this is to take advantage of PowerDVD's excellent video and audio processing. It doesn't take mkv ... vlc can play it but it is NOT a product that delivers superior video and audio quality.

Well, according to Popcornhour (http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/) :
The Popcorn Hour A-100 supports the latest high bitrate video formats (MPEG2 MP@HL, H.264 HP@L4.1, VC-1 AP@L3 in TS of at least 40Mbps)
to give you up to 1080p high-definition videos.
It certainly doesn't seam like bitrate is going to be a problem... I guess it's time to fiddle and change some stuff.

In your case I would certainly recommend the CQ-crf (probably 20 - 22) since it's geared to max quality vs exact filesize (for 2-pass).
Since you're encoding NTSC ... 784x448 (resized) or 720x480 (anamorphic) is certainly your upper limit for resolution.
Many NTSC guys swear by 640x360 (65% of original pixels) but in your case you may prefer the more standard 720x400.

Well... according to Auzentech (http://www.auzentech.com/site/products/x-plosion.php) you've got the best PC sound card ever !

That said, you should probably concentrate in maintaining the DTS soundtrack (generally better than AC3).
DTS audio tracks are generally quite large ... and converting to AAC for encodes, may still be the way to go.
DTS audio is usually associated with DVD's or even Superbit (http://www.sonypictures.com/cthe/superbit/what_is_superbit.html) DVD's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superbit) as released by Sony (aimed at the audio/videophile).

AAC (MP4) is superior to DTS but I don't see any mention of MP4/AAC support in your sound-card specs.
I would certainly look into a sound card that best highlights the advantages of your Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo ... since
that is pretty much 'as good as it gets' right now !

I don't know if it's normal but all the divx profile are not correctly formated (vbvMedium or vbvBuffer) I don't know if it interfere with divxm but that doesn't sound very catholic.

The resulting encode is useless as the channels seam to be re-shuffled (no center channel, but center voice coming thru the Front channels L/R).

I have this only with this specific movie series. All other encodes are correct. Any idea?

Instead a second encoding run (bat cmd file) will produce a audio1.aac and then a audio1.mp4 which has the wrong channel mapping.

.mov support don't work with a combinaison of m-jpeg/pcm (namely camera taken video) due to the lack of directshow filter appropriate. Perhaps adding support of mov using QTSource would work?

I haven't been able to burn in subtitles in either the mp4 or m2ts container. I select the subtitle track and select "burn subtitle" under advanced settings, but I've had no luck.

Ok, I have converted heaps of TS files to MKV using AutoMKV version 0.95 and they were fine.

Some of the TS files I have when converting using AutoMKV would crash x264.exe and not matter what I did I couldn't get it to work.

I have tried the same TS files on version 0.96 and now x264 doesn't crash but Media Info command line crashes. If I click close and let AutoMKV continue it encodes and produces a file but it is shorter than it should be and the audio is out of sync. Below is my log of one such failed conversion.

Apart from this problem which I don'ty think is AutoMKV's fault, the new 0.96 version works really good.

Anyway help would be much appreciated.

Buzz, I'd like to assist in a slap-dash fast updating/inclusion of newer, more powerful degraining and debanding filters (such as all of those mentioned in the thread linked two posts above this one), as well as the ability to select multiple filters (and determine their order) without having to cut-n-paste strings.

As far as I'm concerned, AutoMKV is the only encoding GUI with any GUI actually in it; and I'd like to add as much functionality to it as quickly as possible, present unaddressed bugs be damned.

I'd like to encode a DVB-Stream (PAL, 720x576, 16:9) to XVID/AVI with automkv keeping the resolution and AR.
What do I have to do/configure to keep the 16:9 AR???
I did some test-encodes yesterday newer getting the result I wanted. As HTPC a xbox (with XBMC) is used.

Now I finally found out what EditMe in AutoMKV-PAR means 'just type in the PAR you want'.
But even typing in 16:9 gives me a wrong AR with the xbox resulting in too small picture (height, black bars above and beneath are too big).

And I even found out that the PAR syntax is 4 for 16:9 and not '16:9'.

What I'm now wondering about is the fact that when I select manual crop, the source first is encoded to VXID and then cropped.
Should the video not be cropped prior to encoding?

May I report bugs here? All or some are probably already reported, but since the forum does not allow to a search a thread for keywords and I won't read 30 pages, I just tell them here:

I'm using the beta 6 of 0.96.

a) Everytime it starts it asks me for the Nero AAC encoder and I chose "No". Why this is repeated again and again if I don't intend to use Nero AAC?

b) if "AC3" is selected as audio type and "original" and the source (DVD) has AC3 tracks, one actually supposes it will demux the audio and mux it with the finished video. But it encodes audio, even if normalizing is turned off etc.

c) the conversion of b) mostly gets stuck and using the Abort button does not work then, so I have to kill the process and restart the whole conversion. Extremely annoying.

d) with AutoGK before doing so, why can't AutoMKV not remember what it did during the conversion in order to somehow continue a previously interrupted conversion without starting everything new, including indexing, demuxing etc. The files are all still there.

e) if only one file is on the queue and the is conversion started by the Start Encoding button, then the button is accessible again after some time, even if the encoding is already started and not finished yet.

f) if you open a DVD by IFO, then select an audio track and accidentally use the button for next to the audio track selector ("open first audio file" and cancel this dialogue, another dialogue appears and if also cancelled, the dropdown list with the audio tracks is empty.

g) it sometimes gives a "low disk space" warning, though there are gigs of HDD space left on all drives

h) if the settings are saved by the "Save settings" button it also saves the output folder. If this folder is not changed for the next conversion and is also not existing, AutoMKV will start with and then give an error about a file that can't found. I suppose it's because of the missing output folder, because if I create the folder again, it works normal.

Excuse me, if I did something wrong, but this not the first conversion tool I use and I only wanted to give it a try. :D

Maybe you should update to beta12 and check if your problems still arise...

In my opinion automkv is the definite best tool for encoding mvids from vob's to x264-mkv. Surely there are some issues that I have whined about here but I can live with them fine (mvdenoise, AQ=20,1, 2pass, unlimited file size and 60-> quality with manual crop/resize gives great results for nice filesize...just wanted to share...

Is this project still going on strong? I remember buzzqw having some personal issues that stalled the development but think I saw some line here saying about the final version coming out soon so...

Is it too late to wish that there would be a checklist(like Gorduian Knot has) on queue so that only the jobs checked would be encoded and the rest would wait for the next encoding session

Recently i started using autoMKV and have to say that it is quite good. However there seem to be few GUI related errors in the latest B12 version (and previous versions):
-The output directory keeps getting changed i.e. you specify an output dir then press 'check DVD' and the program resets output to app dir.
-Cant select AutoCrop and Resize None at same time. Mentioned in change log but cant be done (useful for cropping then doing 1:1 encode)
-If the DVD drive drop down is not set to 'none' then when trying to add a new input once you have selected the file in the explorer box and then select ok, when returning to AuotMKV the input file box is auto changed to the DVD anyway (i.e. you cant select a different input as it keeps changing back to the dvd).
-Similar to above if you have selected an input file but then use the dvd drop down to select other than 'none' despite the fact the input box specifies another file when hitting encode it will process the DVD drive anyway.
-The 'Preview' and 'Chapter' buttons seem to disable themselves and wont reenable at times.
-Also it would be nice if when using custom x264 profiles other than the standard default ones that if that profile uses CQ encoding that the app will detect it and show the CQ Tune button for specifying CRF values.
-If you follow this procedure: enable the 'Manual Crop' check box -> (1) -> then enable the 'Use Manual Crop/Resize' Check box -> disable 'Use Manual ...' check box -> (2). Youll notice at stages (1) and (2) that the enabled state of the crop boxes is different despite the state of the check boxes being the same.

There are a few other GUI errors that i cant remember at this time but the ones above are the most annoying. And as mentioned earlier the avisynth plugin dlls really need updating.

Just a suggestion for a problem mentioned above by infiniter:

A possible solution is to use the already existing queue. So when you press start encoding it essential does exactly the same as if you pressed 'Add to queue' and then 'Start encoding'. The queue can then have a function triggered when adding elements to check for duplicates and ignore (or prompt).
It would also be useful to be able to add new elements to the queue while current elements are being processed.

I just now realized there's a new beta going for AutoMKV. :p Anyway, I've been playing around with it. Looks like the newer builds of x264 have notably better video quality. Particularly when dealing with AQ. Even going from the version included in the beta to the version that MeGUI is now using was a significant leap in quality. Macroblocking is almost non-existent with it. I was rather surprised!

To me it's most noticeable in darker areas like fog or smoke. The beginning of Sweeney Todd is a good example. Another couple are Planet Terror and Sin City. They're both dark movies and show lots of macroblocking at lower bitrates and even at moderately higher ones. I have a couple test clips with the same exact settings. One done with the x264 that comes with the beta and the other done exchanging the executable for the latest updated one with MeGUI. It's not a HUGE difference but it's enough of one for me to notice.

The encoders are not the problem -- as I mentioned last page, it's the lack of support for newer 3rd-party filters.

If you think those movies are bad, try something older, like the 1950's sci-fi movie "This Island Earth" (most of the movie is extremely grainy and dark with subtle color variations that just go nutso when one attempts to clean the grain with the included tools). Nice to see you guys getting so deep into filters...
I'm so used to using Q20-22 (often with no filter) that I forget that there is still room for improvement - especially older material !

Only filters will help sources as bad as TIE ("This Island Earth"). Choice of compression codec (x264 or xvid) is a comparatively trivial decision, and essentially irrelevant to quality.

IMO, 40% of all DVDs are junk, and need filter treatment.

(Is the open-source available for this app? If Buzz is gone, it'd be nice if someone else could step in to just update the filters list.
