Hi you all,

Some time ago, I posted at videohelp.com where I was a long time member about my experience with Rip4Me. I had tried to use something called PSL2 /RIP or PLS2 Creator and was having a problem creating PSL file. There was a tutorial and I was frankly surprised at my difficulty. The Italian author thought it was childplay and it probably was.

Anyway, I tried Rip4Me and I was frankly relieved that this program created the PSL file automatically and so it seems effortlessly.

However I did have some problems with the 2 WEEDS DVDs (WEEDS is a Showtime program) and I posted at the videohelp.com forum.

JOHNER23 told me to post the log file here so that knowledgeable (developers) people would be able to make the program better.

This is the reason for my posting here.

But I did not know there was a waiting period for 5 days and soon, Weeds became old news and new versions of Rip4Me were published.

I just got a new DVD, Madea's Family Reunion ( I have not seen it yet, but it is not supposed to be good) and for fun I tried to rip this DVD using the latest Rip4Me v.1.4.7.0.

Lo and behold the ripped files crashed Power DVD and DVD Shrink.

I am a little shocked really because I did use FreeDVD and (as you can see in the log file) FixVTS to clean up the files and PGCEdit to clean up the number of streams in VMGM/VTSI_MAT tables.

The resulting files are all scrambled and completely unusable.

As I said, I really didn't care about a backup for this movie anyway, so I don't really care about ever being able to have a backup.

My posting is really to report real feedback on the performance of Rip4Me on a newer DVD.

Unhappily no, that's not my problem. I am running XP Pro with SP2 and the latest MS patches on an Athlon 64 @3GHz with 1GB of ddr RAM, 2 PATA HDs (500GB), 1 SATA (500GB). 2 NEC 3550,ATI AIW X800XL.

The log obviously recorded the problem Rip4Me had when it tried to rip.

I already used DVD Decrypter stand alone in addition to DVDFab Decrypter with bad results.

Rip4Me did complete the rip although it asked if the system is Win98 or WinMe. I have no idea why it asked that because my system is a XP Pro with SP2 and the latest patches ( automatic update was enabled, in addition to my periodic visit to microsoft.com).

DVD Decrypter could not complete the rip.

FreeDVD reported there were protection in the cells and files (from Rip4Me) which it did removed.

And then Power DVD and DVD Shrink both crashed playing he ripped files.

DVD looks perfect. Just checked under bright sunlight based on your post.

May be tonight we will play this DVD on our Panasonic S97. I almost never run into a defective DVD except rentals.

All our DVDs are region 1 (US).

I guess I can try to rip it again to see if it is repeatable. I really hate to do this, but you said the movie is not that bad.

Looking perfect is not being perfect. According to the guide, when RipIt4Me (http://www.ripit4me.org/) detects something is bad (scratched disk), it will tell you.

Here it is is giving you a message that it thinks you might be running a diff OS. From what I have seen on the forums, the problem is that it does not import the PSL under these OSs.

However, if setarip_old has done the same DVD (with the same CRC32?) successfully, then it would seem your DVD is possibly damaged or you had a conflicting program.

I would take his advice and return it for an exchange.

From memory, FreeDVD was just a little region free utility. And would not tell you anything.

If this DVD is not protected and DVD Decrypter can't do it, itself, then the conclusion is that it is damaged.

To see if a DVD has any ARccOS on it, open it in PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) and do this:

2.Doesn't RipIt4Me remove not-unplayed cells?
Certainly [V/C Id: 1/ 2] [V/C Id: 1/ 4] [V/C Id: 1/ 5] are not shown as unplayed cells by PgcEdit plugin.
(But in fact [V/C Id: 1/ 1] [V/C Id: 1/ 22] are not shown as unplayed cells, too.)
PgcEdit plugin remove tiny cells even if these are not unplayed cells.


Anyway, the process is not over until FixVTS has been run.

Well, those cells surely are tiny. In order for the author to see exactly what is going on, you'd need to post a zipped copy of your log folder in Application Data/Ripit4Me folder.

However, as you know, you can not do that here, as this folder contains IFOs from a commercial DVD.

Perhaps the official RipIt4Me forum can help more?

And I am sure unreferenced titles are removed, so long as the titles are the last in the title map. So, a VTS can not be removed if title 1 is in it. The titles need to be remapped first.

You are both right and I am an idiot for not recognizing this any sooner. I cannot see any defect in the DVD, but there is something which caused Rip4Me to malfunction. I tried to rip again with DVD Decrypter, no go.

So based on you guys diagnostics I got a new DVD and the rest is history. No problem.

I feel like an utterly fool and I am real sorry for reporting a non existing problem.

Is there possibility as below?
RipIt4Me judge as scratch when sectors that inserted dammy by DVDDecrypter is not corresponding to unplayed (unrefferenced) sectors.
DVDDEcrypter inserts dammy according to PSL files, but first PSL file doesn't involve sectors of IFO/BUP/MenuVOB files.
So even if Read Error occured on these files, DVDDEcrypter can't insert dammy sectors, and RipIt4Me can't judge as scratch.
But it's just my guess.

Does anyone know the criteria for the "bogus" VTS removal. Reason I ask is because I recently tried to rip my copy of Independence Day: Five Star Collection Region 1 and it removed VTS 5 which was the theatrical version. If needed I will post the ripit4me logs when I get home. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I was doing a "Full DVD backup" and the VTS was removed. Ripit4me reported that the VTS was "bogus". While trying to view the ripped backup using PowerDVD it wouldn't play. I was able to use DVD Decrypter by itself but I just thought I'd raise the question of why it was removed. Thanks.

Ok, sorry, cannot post any log file as it's my habit to delete all ripped files as soon as I am done with them.

My recollection is:

1. the files were completely ripped. But Rip4Me claimed something about not finding my VIDEO_TS folder and my system running W98 or WinME. I run XP SP2 and do not have W98 or Me installed on this machine (Athlon 64 Venice core @3MHz).

2. Since the files were ripped successfully I started testing them with Power DVD and DVD Shrink and both programs crashed. What I saw were scrambled pictures.

3. Based on setarip_old and Blutach inputs, I inspected the DVD which looked OK to me i.e. no scratched discernible to my eyes under bright sun. Frankly I did not believe that my DVD is defective. But I am willing to prove I could be wrong. I went and exchanged the DVD which looks just like the one I replaced.

4. My system is overclocked but very stable as I ran memtest86, Prime95 torture test on large FFT's and SuperPi 32M option.

5. My stand alone DVD player, a Panasonic S97 upconverting to 1080i with HDMI to a Pan TH-50PX50U plasma, played the DVD seemingly with no problem. I did not play the original DVD completely, just tested it out.

I was real surprised that, as serarip_old said, this DVD had no new encryption and we do not need Rip4Me (verified) so it's just one of those things that I really screwed it it up.

Blutach, I did do the pgcedit test. You and and serarip_old were both right.

Also, remember that when you process with AutoGK, and if you want to avoid audio/video delay, be sure to rip in movie-only mode as this removes all the bogus cells at the start of the movie (they're not always removed in full mode).
If they're not removed, a "bug" (not really a bug, let's say a limitation) in DGIndex/AutoGK might introduce a delay between the audio and the video...

Thanks a great tip. I normally rip full DVD and then use Shrink to decide what I want, but I didn't think of doing Movie Only. I will try that with all of my Sony discs from now on, but so far the only one I had a audio synch issue with was Ultraviolet, but I fixed that with VDubMod. Every other title so far, i was able to clean with FixVTS combined with PGCEdit or RI4M.

IF YOU HAVE A CRASH: Make sure you post the DebugLog.txt file (re-run RipIt4Me and it will located it for you). If your crash happens at step 2 (create PSL), then post the original IFO files copied straight from the DVD. If the crash happens during the cleanup phase, then post the ripped IFO files (in the target rip directory) and the buttoninfo.txt file. THANKS!
Fixed a title mapping bug. A JumpTT that point to a non-existent title, or to a title that was removed is now changed to a NOP.
RI4M shouldn't complain about DVD Shrink still running if you started it but then closed it.

RI4M is crashing. It looks like DVD D doesn't even get off the ground. This has happen before with earlier versions while using a USB DVD/RW, but the internal DVD Rom worked fine. This time around niether will work. I tried deleating the .INI file; reverted back to 1.46; unplugged all USB devices; uninstalled and reinstalled RI4M; RI4M still shuts down.

Yes it is and it is R1. I know what your thinking it, doesn't need to be run through RI4M, but it is a habit of using RI4M, because of the automation. But in this case, DVD D isn't even started, so I'm trying to isolate a hardware or software reason. DVDD worked fine by itself on this DVD, and ran FixVTS fine. So next is to try RI4M on another PC and see if it works. I just used RI4M last night ...same version, same PC, I didn't restart it in between last night and this morning. I did however restart the PC a few times.

Any ideas?

If I understrand you correctly:

1) Directly, DVD Decrypter processed this DVD without a problem

2) From within the "RipIt4Me" package, the automatic first step of ripping with DVD Decrypter fails

3) Both before and after trying to rip this DVD,the "RipIt4Me" package processed other DVDs properly

If all of the above is correct, there must be a bug in the "RipIt4Me" package related to the structure of this specific DVD...

If there's something I've misstated in 1) through 3), please clarify.
