Thanks, setarip, I missed the post. This really is sad to see happen. Especially in light of all the problems people have been having just trying to play their legitimately bought DVDs lately. At least with R4M and FixVTS around you could back them up and play the copy if you ran into compatibility issues. Now they've taken that away from us. It's just maddening. Especially given the amount of movies I tend to buy per month...I play them on HTPC's but these latest protections won't allow that. Fortunately I have AnyDVD, but, that doesn't help the R4M users very much. :(

How the hell can they do this? This program doesn't remove copy protection. Is Vobblanker and/or PgcEdit next?

How the hell can they do this?Life isn't fair.
"Deep pockets" (Money) and a lot of legal pressure on those with less money and less, if any, legal representation, can coerce the desired result - whether or not any laws have truly been violated.
A prime example of such behavior is noted regarding the president of "Monster Cable". He ordered his attorneys to send threat/demand letters to any and all companies that have the word "Monster" in their names. The letter demanded 10% of gross profits, while the threat was "we'll sue you and take your company away from you". Perhaps the most outrageous contact was with a company named "Monster Cleaners".
BTW - It was eventually determined (when someone refused to cave in) that "Monster Cable" had no legal claim on the word "monster"...
Personally, I view the bigger concern as being how the authors are being dealt with...

I agree. :( This whole situation sucks. I wish all the authors well. They gave to the community and expected nothing in return and this is what they have to look forward to. Life's not fair indeed.

Sad to hear this
<conspiracy mode> What a coincidence: Sony puts new DVD's with more aggressive copy protections on the market which don't play in certain DVD players and the tools which could correct this are disappearing... </conspiracy mode>
Luckily Sony releases crap movies* mostly, but still I can't avoid them 100% :(

Thanks setarip_old , I just like to check for new versions and I noticed the web page was down, then the news from Video Help, its sad that all this great work has to be kept from the public. I consider the authors of these programs legends and they will not be forgotten.

Is Vobblanker and/or PgcEdit next? That may depend upon the "bad guys'" interpretation of pertinent postings in this thread, in this forum, and in other forums, as to whether these programs fall into the same category as the RipIt4me "package".
In my opinion, neither of the programs now falls into that category. PGCEdit has NOTHING to do with ripping (never has) - and VOBBlanker's "finishing touch" capability disappeared with the arrival of the second iteration of "RipGuard" copy protection...

Even I agree now that jsoto has clarified his position that VobBlanker has NOTHING to do with ripping. It's an editor, nothing more. So, hopefully they leave it the hell alone.

Let's hope that, in addition to my wish that the authors are not mistreated, "they" don't go after everyone (documentarians, translators, etc.) associated with "RipIt4Me"...

This is a very disturbing trend that has started with the disappearance of the great freeware tools over the past couple of weeks. I believe FixVTS's source code was made public, not sure about Menu Shrink. A lot of people might benefit if future freeware tools are made open source, it may be the only way if this trend continues. We still don't know the details of what's happening, but it seems someone has become very aggressive with there tactics.

What was this feature you speak about?
techreactor
20th April 2007, 06:00
Well there was no further development planned for menushrink and so it might live forever like DVDD and DVD shrink.
But removing fixvts is definitely a blow to the community. I would still call for releasing the sources of all such popular tools while the authors can, to avoid further disappointment.
setarip_old

@linx05
For DVDs using the first iteration of "RipGuard" copy protection (primarily Disney releases), the following procedure yielded a "cleaned up" rip:
Rip this "RipGuard"-protected DVD to your harddrive using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4.
Then load the rip into VOBBlanker and:
Set an output directory, select "Process all" - and then press the "Process" radiobutton.
The new DVD "package" created by VOBBlanker in your output directory should be processed properly by DVD Shrink...

Anyway, it's not because a tool is able to clean the ARccOS crap up that it must be considered as a ripper. IMO, VobBlanker and MenuShrink are perfectly legal programs. Same thing for FixVTS, although it has been specifically used to clean ARccOS DVDs. But it is also used, perfectly legally, to remove unnecessary cells from a DVD modified by PgcEdit, for example. Prohibiting its usage is a shame!

20th April 2007, 12:41
If MenuShrink is considered illegal then everything related to editing IFOs and VOBs would be as well IMO.. bye-bye DVD Rebuilder etc. Sigh..

I think that things are being taken to the extreme now, and someone needs to make a stand. To use a analogy, cars are legal but if you run somoene over then that's illegal. It's the same with the utilities - they are designed for a legal purpose and if someone happens to use them for something that the movie studios consider unjust then that's their opionion but in no way deems them unlawful.
The world has gone mad.

Yea, seriously, it's nice in theory, but, you're talking about individuals who make no money off their products that do this out of love for community. When you've got 1000 pound gorilla jumping on your head, it's kind of hard to stand.

Your analogy is quite far from perfect. The tool was presented as a helpto make DVD backups perfect, what we think is perfectly legal (and they think is ilegal). Then nobody presented the cars as a tool to run someone over...

Just thinking aloud here - I wonder why "they" never went after the author of DVD Shrink, that includes direct decrypting and compressing, during the 15 or so months (April 2003 through July 2004) of its releases?
(I don't believe there was anything particularly "untouchable" about the Spanish website that was used)

@DaChew
If you read the ENTIRE history of the events regarding 321 Studios, you'l find that 321 Studios initiated that lawsuit, in an effort to get a court ruling that its product was legal - They lost.
That event in no way explains why "they" didn't pursue the author of what was then the only freeware combination DVD ripping and compressing program - the one that made the entire DVD backup "scene" blossom into something available to the masses...

(...)There hasn't been a new version for a couple of months (and you obviously know the apparent situation regarding future updates)...
Just from curiosity: is/was the FixVTS1.603 the last version made available?
I've got enough time for ripping and encoding only like 1-3 months a year, while I remain totally out of business for the rest of time, so I never was up-to-date with the development of the tools that I use. ;)
I've just read the last few pages: I'm worried with what's been going on on the field of copy protection vs. ripping tools recently, as most of you are. I can only count myself lucky all the DVDs that I had bought in Germany, before I moved back to my country, don't contain anything so nasty & malicious like "Das Parfum", and Polish releases are usually much weaker protected.

I was going to say gun but thought that in the current times it wouldn't be appropriate.
Anyway, by take a stand I meant that there needs to be more than one person responsible. We're back to the distributed development approach and dissemination of information.
Was FixVTS really classed as a ripping tool? Just like corrupting the IFOs can't be thought of as copy-protection in the sense that they have to meet the DVD specification to guarantee playback so are really looking for holes in the tools such as DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter. As someone else said, FixVTS is designed to remove empty cells and free up space from user-generated content. No more, no less. The fact those dummy cells cause problems to DVD Shrink is not the fault of the FixVTS author.

@greathWas FixVTS really classed as a ripping tool?As a standalone program, probably not. But, as I've speculated previously, the recent direct incorporation into RipIt4me (obviously a ripping tool) may have been what triggered all the recent activity by the "bad guys"...

Thanks, mate. That's all I wanted to know. :)
@ setarip_old:
Good to know, even if it's bad news after all.
"Version 1.7.0.0 (28 February 2007)
- First version that integrates our adaptation of FixVTS. There is no need to have FixVTS installed anymore. Several options concerning FixVTS have been renamed/removed, including the FixVTS log, which is now included (and much simplified) into the RipIt4Me log."
Does that mean they have changed something in FixVTS itself while incorporating it into the main application (I don't mean renaming or removing some options, but the "our adaptation" expression")? Do you happen to know?
cheers,

I think I understand what's happening here, but would appreciate confirmation.
Through today (4/23) basically all region 1 DVDs can be ripped if you have a stocked toolbox (AnyDVD, Ripit4me, Shrink, DVDD, FixVTS, etc). Beginning tomorrow (4/24), Sony (Columbia/Tristar) will begin selling DVDs with a new and advanced protection scheme. It is possible/likely that the current tools will not be able to handle this new protection. This will require new tools be developed (or at least new capabilities added to existing tools).
I'm not clear on exactly which titles releasing tomorrow are Sony titles. I assume that beginning tomorrow people will be showing up to indicate which titles can no longer be ripped.
For me, this is important because if I can't rip the DVD to my server I am far, far less inclined to buy it.
Perhaps a sticky should be created to capture this list of unrippable DVDs.
Do I understand this correctly?

Hi!Beginning tomorrow (4/24), Sony (Columbia/Tristar) will begin selling DVDs with a new and advanced protection scheme.Although this is certainly possible, you won't know until the new releases are released.
In fact, ALL SONY releases to date can be properly processed by RipIt4Me v.1.6.4, which was issued in early January!

I'm curious how R4M handles R1 The Queen when it comes out tomorrow. I've seen AnyDVD scans of it and it looks like it has some very nasty RipGuard protection on it. Usually R4M has no trouble with it but I'm wondering if it's been upgraded. I know someone said they had trouble ripping The Queen a few days ago but I wasn't able to find out what region it was. I'm guessing region 2 as it's been out there for a while now.

Well everything is very quiet about what happen about the 1 april..
And the door is closed for disscusion....I have found something
on the net. In another forum that can put some light to the some
questions...If this is true I dont know but It could be....
--- copied text ---
Ripit4me was taken down because it circumvented copyguard protection.
The culprits were most likely Sony/Macrovision.
DVDD decrypter has been unsupported now for 2 years, having been involved with DVDD,
it falls flat now without the help of ripit4me to create PSL files for decrypter to read and bypass.
The people involved in this recent legal action have had their computers seized and given
gag orders not to talk about it as well as being told to continue posting on their
respective forums which are know being monitored.
---- edited info removed ----
These raids took place in the UK, Austrilia, France, and the U.S.A.
The main reason was to find the develeper of the PSL file code which effectively
enabled DVDD to bypass any new copyguard brought into being.
The downfall of one issues rebirth for another...........

I dont blame the people who "give up" their hobby projects like this, i think anyone would do the same in similar situation. Though it still bothers me why people just "vanish" without anykind of answer or hint as to why. As far as i can tell, for instance, FixVTS wasnt illegal or anything of the sort, yet its gone...
"People" with money seem to have the power to "claim" all sorts of BS, when they are against people with less. Its really healthy world we are living in, i cant wait to see where it all ends.

@SamuriHLI'm curious how R4M handles R1 The Queen when it comes out tomorrow."The Queen" is a Miramax release. Perhaps I haven't been paying attention recently (It's an age thing and I'm likely mistaken;>}) but, although it's part of the Disney "family" I don't recall Miramax availing itself to either "RipGuard" or "ARccOS" protection.
On the other hand, "Deja Vu" R1 is also being released on April 24. As it's a Disney-related release, we can likely look forward to "RipGuard" protection on it...
