Oh that's not from me. That's from a post on the Slysoft forum. I don't have access to movies before they come out. Some people that own video stores tend to get them a week or so in advance. And lately they've been posting AnyDVD scans of new movies as they come in. No, I've got a couple Lite On drives, an NEC drive built into my laptop, and a brand new LG drive with usb case coming tomorrow. :)

Why v1.6.4.0?Because, as I've posted several times, v.1.64.0 continues to work for me (I'm a firm believer in that old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!") ;>}

Additionally, there have been posts regarding the subsequent releases that indicated some people were having problems with them - and, in some instances, the author(s) acknowledged newly created bugs...

You REALLY believe they just simply told LUK "Hey, discontinue developing it and you're all good." ??? I'd be VERY surprised if part of the deal he got was not to turn over the source code. But at that point, the magic that was DVDD was already out in the wild. There was nothing they could do about it. No, that information was never made public as I'm sure LUK got a gag order basically saying he couldn't discuss the details, but, come on...they raid your house they're going to take your machine. And on that machine is going to be the source code of your project. So yea, I'm pretty sure...do I know for a fact? No, I don't, but, I'd be very surprised if they didn't have access to the source.

To put an end to all this speculation rubbish about DVDDecrypter once and for all:

Lightning UK was approached by Macrovision and was offered a no-litigation deal and a cash settlement. He effectively sold all the rights to the program (DVDDecrypter), including its source code, to Macrovision.

In short, he isn't a martyr. He got paid for the program and agreed to keep his silence and not continue its development.

I don't know the deal with RipIt4Me or FixVTS, but I would assume that they got the same deal, as the "keep it quiet" condition is the same.

As my final posting on this topic, I'd make the following observation:

If, in fact, you were present and, on behalf of Macrovision, "involved" in the settlement, you must know that Non-Disclosure agreements typically bind BOTH parties (hence the term "agreement"). Therefore, whether or not you are now affiliated with Macrovision, it would seem that you've (on behalf of Macrovision) violated that agreement by disclosing the details in this forum...

I'm using Ripit4me and am having problems intefacing FixVTS into the add tool position. The help menu is not available & I tried multible times,so before I throw something......

What version are you using? If you have v.1.7 than I don't think you need to add it.

Excerpt from version history:
"Version 1.7.0.0 (28 February 2007)
- First version that integrates our adaptation of FixVTS. There is no need to have FixVTS installed anymore. Several options concerning FixVTS have been renamed/removed, including the FixVTS log, which is now included (and much simplified) into the RipIt4Me log."

Like Deuce2 said, you don't need it for 1.7. The "Cleanup VOBs" takes the place of it. You could still do it though. In the Tools section select "Setup Tools" then "Add Tool". Then browse to where the FixVTS exe is. It will then name it something like "new tool", I forget, but you can then rename it.

After reading the news on the front page of Doom9, it came to a big surprise about who was responsible and who had a visit to their house. The program is still going strong though. I wonder when the next big freeware will make a break through?

Before reading the Doom9 news regarding the Sony-RipIt4Me-FixVTS saga, I must admit to being disappointed with the attitude of moderators on this site towards members who were asking, what seemed to me, perfectly understandable questions.

I was even considering closing my membership and abandoning the site because its character had apparently changed for the worse with Blutach, in particular, becoming a Jekkyl & Hyde character. The only thing that prevented me was the suspicion that much more had probably been going on behind the scenes that could not, for some reason, be revealed.

I was shocked to read what had actually happened. I can't imagine what it must feel like to have your home raided by the police. It must be terrifying! Knowing that the law is in the pocket of the bully-boys, and that you've really done nothing wrong, must create an emotional rollercoaster akin to a nervous breakdown. I guess there will be a nasty emotional scar for some considerable time.

My condolences to the victims and my apologies to Blutach for initially thinking ill of him - in the circumstances, I think he has behaved impeccably.

first search warrant. Looking through it reveals that they were after anything related to RipIt4Me - starting with its use, its users and ending with its development, and about circumventing Sony's ARccOS DVD corruption mechanism. Thereafter, we have orders that hint towards the secrecy of the proceedings (I'd be very interested if somebody living down there would go down to the registrar and asked to see all documentation related to the case

I find this part particulrly disturbing considering I posted quite a lot in the Ripit4Me Linux section at DD including a guide on my site that was linked with Miss Marples original guide. I have since changed the guide to how to install DVD Rebuilder on Linux but Ripit4Me is still ghoing strong,

I really don´t know what to say about SONY (other corps can apply this too) and their lawsuits against people.

So avoid their "techniques" to make our dvd's compliant standard is illegal, but trample our rights to got a backup of our dvds, it isn´t. I really like to see that yardstick it's the same for corps than for the normal people, he.

Maybe they should look in other direction to find the answer why the things are going wrong in cinema industry aswell music industry.

In the case of cinema, since they bought Tristar and later Columbia (correct me if I wrong), the quality of cinema has been getting worse and worse. Do they remember what is a script?

Less trample our rights with stupid lawsuits, and make true movies, not just CG's, FX's and multi-channel sound...

Sorry, it's one of many things that make me get angry when you see that is so unfair.

hahaha, I understand the frustration. However, yea, it would seem like a bad disc if you're having issues with it. The scans I've seen show absolutely no protection. Which is an interesting development. The last couple weeks new Sony releases have not been ARccOS protected.

Well, I kept the Ghost Rider extended version dvd set I bought - and my Lite-On 16A7S wants no part of the middle of this movie disc - however my Benq 1655 reads, plays, and/or processes this title just fine. So, I'm not sure whether to blame the dvd or the drive . . . this has happened before with certain Sony titles and this Lite-On drive. I guess I'll give it a workout on my standalone dvd players to see how it fares there.
Although this title does not appear to have any corrupt sectors or string of phony vts titlesets, it does still have autorun initiated executables on the disc. Why Sony does that is beyond me.

How anyone can call Sony's "arccos" a digital copy protection mechanism is beyond me. It seems to be nothing more than a collection of intentional defects, causing players and programs alike to jump around and over numerous corrupt areas and phony video files and titlesets in the attempt to play the video title. But I expect Sony has the right to compromise their products, and harm their quality reputation, if they so choose.
I actually purchased a Sony dvd title today (Ghost Rider) for the first time in a very long time, due to their constant paranoia concerning copy protection resulting in increasingly disappointing dvd products loaded with corrupt sectors and phony titlesets and short on quality video and entertainment. But after reading the articles and reference documents, and gaining a reinforced understanding of the values and nature of this company, I expect I will return it - and rent it instead.
I also find myself feeling better every day with my 46" Sharp 1080p lcd tv - purchased recently instead of the Sony model I originally targeted for purchase.
The message is - if you do not like how a company behaves or find yourself in conflict with their values and attitudes or detect a trend in their products and/or service offerings that you find unacceptable - don't do business with them.

Now the question that comes to mind is, shouldn't a consumer group be able to file a class action lawsuit against ALL movie (DVD, BD, HD DVD alike) authoring studios due to their sales of "defective products that sway from industry accepted standards in an intentional and deceptive way"?

At the end of the day how is "inserting defective sectors/titlesets into a DVD structure so that unauthorized programs cannot read the DVD" different than "inserting extremely hard chocolate chips into a cookie, in case your teeth are not authorized to bite on the cookie"?

I would say we could argue that there is real harm done to the consumer (cannot watch DVD movies OR breaks his/her teeth) due to deceptive marketing (DVDs can be watched on any player OR anyone can eat a chocolate chip cookie).

Can the EFF legal team take a look at this and see if it makes form a legal stand point?

On a more positive note . . .
"Ghost Rider" extended edition (R1 widescreen) appears to have used its available double layer space on the media for larger, higher bit-rate video files than recent releases and an included dts5.1 soundtrack. So - in the midst of all the deserved criticism Sony gets - kudos to them for providing this dvd product directed at a hopefully improved quality movie viewing experience instead of loading up the disc with arcoss nonsense!
Now if only I can determine if the media itself is marginal - or my Lite-On 16A7S is just finicky . . .

If you look back over the last year or two, you'll observe that SONY has sporadically put out new releases without "ARccOS" protection.

Additionally, back in February (if I remember correctly), there was an article in the electronic version of Forbes magazine that stated SONY was discontinuing the application of "ARccOS". That discontinuation lasted for one week.

As an aside, I don't believe "ARccOS" has ever been applied to a "SONY DVD Classics" release...

I would ordinarily agree with you, but, Sony has shown an incredible arrogance when dealing with consumer issues. It would not surprise me at all if they went this direction. It would, however, shock me if they simply stopped trying to protect their discs at all...we'll see what the next few weeks holds in store.
