Pleeeeease stop the speculation before you ruin things here!

You want to explain that one to me cause I don't understand it. Ruining what exactly? Is what I said so offensive to someone that I get a warning for it? No matter how many times I read it, I don't understand it warranting a warning and then I'm not even supposed to ask for clarification.

I get comments like, "you are demanding this and demanding that" when I am demanding nothing (and challenge anyone to find where I did). I also get, "of which you are not entitled". What exactly does that mean anyway or how does one interpret statements like that? So I ask for an explanation and either get a strike or get labled a trouble maker (which I am not).

This whole deal concerning RitIt4Me has been blown way out of proportion and could have been handled easily by an upfront approach instead of trying to pretend it never existed and covering it up (which puts a cloud over the whole thing and brings up even more questions and speculation).

Now dunno if what I just said (I'm just speaking my mind, that's all) is going to result in me getting another warning. I don't really know cause I still don't understand why I got the first one.

Now dunno if what I just said (I'm just speaking my mind, that's all) is going to result in me getting another warning. Yes, it is. This rant is off-topic, so you get a rule 3 strike.

Do not continue to discuss this or complain about your strikes in this thread. Use the available paths for that: PM a moderator and then if you are not satisfied PM Doom9.

That website has been available for months now. You won't believe how many times I typed .com instead of .org. :)

Not a problem. I was curious when people started posting about the .com site so I went and looked it up. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with ripit4me that we know and love. Unfortunately, I think that is really gone. :(

Please - http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y110/Fator/Orkut.jpg

We go to reactivate the Ripit4me. Somebody knows, knows or has the Orkut? www.orkut.com - It is of the Google group and it has some communities, we can make of the Ripit4me and thus to work. The Ripit4me cannot stop. I wait that have not said high more, we depend on vocês. The return is a generation waiting. They do not finish with the dreams of all a generation. It needs an email of the GMAIL and an Invitation we will enter and there we will be a friend of the other.

They look for to know www.orkut.com and we go to raise the Ripit4me.

It wasn't that big of a deal. I replied to him and said that creating a community for R4M is basically pointless as there will be no further development on it as far as I know and that we can already discuss it here and on a few other forums anyway. So, really, what's the point? Anyway, not a problem.

I find it quite remarkable that, after two full weeks, not a bit of information regarding the disappearance of "RipIt4Me" has been made public...

This (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1755485&postcount=291) was just posted over on CDF(note to mods, if I'm breaking any rules by posting a link to another forum I apologize ahead of time), but, as I replied to it, I'm finding it a little hard to swallow exactly. First, the logic doesn't make ANY sense at all. And second they mention copyguard...isn't that a protection they used on VCR's? :) Anyway, I'm not buying that story until we get some kind of corroboration. It just doesn't fully seem to add up. Obviously SOMETHING bad happened, but, I'm not going to necessarily believe the first post about what supposedly happened without some kind of proof.

setarip_old
15th April 2007, 04:53
I wouldn't lend too much credence to that post either. It's from a new poster (2 posts, including that one) who is quoting someone else.

As far as the speculation that Macrovision is again the "culprit", this is a notion that I (and several others at other forums) raised at the beginning of the month.

As to the reason being that PSL-generating code was the reason for the shutdown, I doubt that it would have taken this long since the program's inception for the "culprit" to take action. I'd sooner believe that "the straw that broke the camel's back" is what I speculated about in the following post:

http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=962476&postcount=464

(BTW, I'm fairly sure the reference to "copyguard protection" is just another way of saying "copy protection")

SamuriHL
15th April 2007, 13:49
While I'm still not 100% convinced of that story, I've come to trust it a little more than my first skepticism of it. I still have no proof that the story is in fact true, but, certain things were brought to my attention in a PM that lead me to believe it could be more than just a newbie making up a story. I remain skeptical until I see some kind of corroboration and proof, but, I'm less skeptical than I first was. Which, could really suck for those involved.

I still can't understand the big mystery here,

1. what companies did the program hurt the most? duh!
2. what was the best way to stop the program?

about as obvious as the nose on your face

techreactor

Yeah! I agree, the answer lies in the above two questions.

Also its a learning for all the future programmers/coders of similar utilities to develop such important and popular tools under GNU license and atleast release the source of prior version/s of such tools to the public.

That is the ONLY way to make them immortal.

After DVD Decrypter went down (RIP) I was actually amazed nobody had picked up SmartRipper. I mean, the source is out there so they wouldn't have to start from scratch.

There were times when problems arose with certain movies. RipIt4Me came out with a fix first or didn't need a fix at all. This had potential customers turning to RipIt4Me. That had to upset the other guys.

no need to reverse engineer the software if you have the code

I agree open source is not the way to go

And I disagree...

Security using obscurity is not the correct way
Linux/Apache... They are open sourced and they are not less secure than ******* (I will not feed the troll ;))

It is perhaps easily beatable but, it is immortal. And after all the failure had been found, what's next ?

Well....
DVD Decrypter was never completelly beaten(with the aid of psl plugin and RipIt4Me), and it 's been nearly 3 years from the ending of its development....
Primarily because it was well writen and flexible, but also because its source was never published...

IMO, being open source would have made it obsolete in a couple of months...

P.S. Maybe Sony and Macrovision should go open source too...
That would be a fair situation...

SamuriHL
17th April 2007, 00:13
IMO, being open source would have made it obsolete in a couple of months...

How? I just don't understand that logic. How would being open source change the functionality that it gave us? They could somehow defeat the PSL code by knowing how it worked? I don't see how that makes a lot of sense. Maybe I'm missing something.

bourtzovlakas
17th April 2007, 00:34
Since it would be no longer developed, any discovered weak point would make it easy for a protection developer to make it permanently useless, with an update in the protection scheme...

Doesn 't that make sense?

Doesn 't that make sense?

But if it was open source, then the source could be modified to fix any potential flaws that may or may not be found. I think what you're suggesting is that if the source code were available to the studios and no one could modify it then it would have been rendered useless long before now. But that's also HIGHLY incorrect. Macrovision DID have the source code to it. A lot of good it did them. If it were truly open source where the public had access to it, as well as the studios, then any "flaws" found in it could have been remedied by the community at large. So, no, it doesn't make sense to me.

bourtzovlakas

How do you know that?
AFAIK nothing like this was ever anounced and only one person should know for sure...

Yes but the studios would always have the advantage...
...and not everything is fixable....

You REALLY believe they just simply told LUK "Hey, discontinue developing it and you're all good." ??? I'd be VERY surprised if part of the deal he got was not to turn over the source code. But at that point, the magic that was DVDD was already out in the wild. There was nothing they could do about it. No, that information was never made public as I'm sure LUK got a gag order basically saying he couldn't discuss the details, but, come on...they raid your house they're going to take your machine. And on that machine is going to be the source code of your project. So yea, I'm pretty sure...do I know for a fact? No, I don't, but, I'd be very surprised if they didn't have access to the source.

bourtzovlakas

Another assumption....

SamuriHL
17th April 2007, 00:54
Yes but the studios would always have the advantage...
...and not everything is fixable....

And not everything they do is playable, either. The more they screw up the DVD structure, the more incompatible their discs become with mainstream players. Just ask the guy who called Sony support because his brand new Sony DVD player won't play any of the latest Sony discs. Yet, using R4M, you could clean those discs of any protection and play them back just fine. So, there's only so much they can do before they make completely incompatible discs. And Slysoft doesn't believe there's anything they can do that's not fixable. So far, they've been right.

SamuriHL
17th April 2007, 00:54
Another assumption....

It IS an assumption, as I said. But it's a pretty safe one if you ask me.

Slysoft also said "any dvd on-the-fly", but many times DVD Shrink disagrees....

SamuriHL
17th April 2007, 01:02
Slysoft also said "any dvd on-the-fly", but many times DVD Shrink disagrees....

I'll give you that one. The idiots at Sony decided to embed their crap deeply inside the VOBs making on the fly structure fixing impossible, but, this, too can be gotten around by simply ripping the title with CloneDVD or VobBlanker in combination with AnyDVD. The point is, I don't think that the studios would gain anything if the decryption program was open source.

And if it was open source, anyone could pick it up and modify it. Therefore if the situation that appears to have happened to DVDD and R4M happened again to an open source product, then it wouldn't matter as much as the product's source code could be picked up by someone else and development could continue. Even Doom9 has said this is a good idea on the main page. :)

bourtzovlakas
17th April 2007, 01:14
I don 't think it is that easy for someone to pick-up the code and fully maintain a program in a couple of days....

Doom9 said that the code should be released if necessery...
...not if the development is still active...

SamuriHL
17th April 2007, 01:17
Isn't it necessary in this case? What they were saying is that if DVDD or R4M were open source and available they wouldn't be so easily stopped. And I agree with that. I'm not suggesting anyone could just pick up the source and have a new version in a day, but, as my boss tells me all the time "it's just code". And if you have the source it's much easier to modify than coming up with it from scratch.

bourtzovlakas
17th April 2007, 01:44
Necessery in general...
If RipIt4Me 's development is over there is nothing that can be done any more...
Doom9 's proposal was for future projects...
...and only if these projects were ever in some kind of trouble...
Only then the source should be published...

(Excuse the off topic reply) I'm sure he didn't, but, it works so I'm promoting it to DVD Shrink users who want a solution for the Sony/AnyDVD problem until Slysoft comes out with their new ripper. Right now their options are limited to buying CloneDVD as a ripper or not using AnyDVD(which they paid for and would probalby want to use). Since VobBlanker is freeware and works extremely well not only as a ripper for AnyDVD but also combined with the blanking features(I think what it was intended for, eh? ;)) to free up some space for compression, I feel it's a good compromise for now. And it keeps DVD Shrink users in the game. :)

P.S. For the record I did not come up with the idea of using VobBlanker as a ripper...I'm simply letting people know that it works.

Why is it an assumption that macrovision would not have the source code for DVDD? Anymore than assuming that that would prevent someone else coming along and evolving the "cat and mouse game" to it's next level.

The bar is set so high now that tactics have changed,
dvd structure has been raped and pillaged to it's limit.

setarip_old
17th April 2007, 04:47
Sounds like you folks have forgotten that VOBBlanker, in conjunction with DVD Decrypter, for quite some time, provided the perfect ripping scenario for all DVDs (most were Disney releases) containing the first iteration of "RipGuard" copy protection...
