It probably means the API has changed and the binary is not longer compatible.
I'll upload an update in a few minutes that has been recompiled with newes x264

I don't know, if 2.4 is ready for Build on Win32 yet :confused:
For now it seems you'll have to try to compile it yourself.

win32: use pthreads instead of win32threads. for some reason, pthreads is much faster.

New threading method:
Encode multiple frames in prallel instead of dividing each frame into slices.
Improves speed, and reduces the bitrate penalty of threading.
Side effects:
It is no longer possible to re-encode a frame, so threaded scenecut detection
must run in the pre-me pass, which is faster but less precise.
It is now useful to use more threads than you have cpus. --threads=auto has
been updated to use cpus*1.5.
Minor changes to ratecontrol.
New options: --pre-scenecut, --mvrange-thread, --non-deterministic
Will those changes make it into Avidemux too ???
I guess simply replacing libx264.dll with the an up-to-date build won't be enough...

Yes! 2.3 final does not come with an installer either. You just unzip to a clean folder and run (Supposedly). 2.2 preview 2 runs fine. Any version of 2.3 will not run whasoever. Unless i am missing something that needs to be installed for 2.3 to run?

Avidemux 2.3 (rev2652) doesn't work with x264 rev611 :(
I replaced libx264.dll with Celtic's latest build. (x264.revision611.7z (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/x264/x264.revision611.7z))
After that I needed to add pthreadGC2.dll to make Avidemux start.
Everything seemed fine - until I started encoding:
"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way!"
I already sent a bugreport:

OK I think I know why (At least with one method).
Avidemux refuses to run on machines run via Remote Desktop. If I go to the actual PC and run it it will run. But as soon as I login to that PC via remote desktop it crashes with the error I posted. It also refuses to run with the same error on THIS PC. Even when I make sure the resolution is 32bit. I believe it is something to do with the way Avidemux is interacting with certain graphics cards and drivers. I am using a beta version of NVidia's drivers on this PC.

Interesting experience with Avidemux and x264:
The FPS display of Avidemux is rather unprecise, but with Mean's built of libx264.dll (included with Avidemux 2.3+ Xmas release) I get "1 FPS". Then I tried Celtic Druis built of libx264.dll, which is about ~260 KB smaller. I had to add "pthreadGC2.dll" to make it work, but now Avidemux shows "2 FPS". So it seems to be faster! Both x264 builds are rev614 and both time I encoded same file with same filters...
I guess I'll stick to Celtic's build :D

No, the .7z file contains everything you'll need for Avidemux!
But you'll have to install the GTK+ runtime, if you have not done that yet.

Running "GTK+ Runtime Environment -> Select language" from Startmenu fixed that problem!

If yes, you can easily do your own filters and load them in avidemux.

I get the same error with x264+mp3 in MP4.
I also get "incompatible output format" when I try to put x264+mp3 in "MPEG TS A+V", except that VLC can produce h264+mp3 in TS (using ffmpeg api), so the question is: is it a GUI related error or core encoder/muxer error ? (Note: it's been like that from the beginning, it's not new).
Edit: stderr.txt and stdout.txt only refer to events that happend manipulating the program, no info about the start of the encoding in my case ...

Hey Guys. So I am working on updating the x264 GUI. But i need some input...
First, I need to know what the are for these VBV options:
*Maximum local bitrate
*VBV buffer size
*Initial VBV Buffer occupancy
What are the input number ranges for each? 0 to 100?
What is their increment step for each (0.1? 1? 10?).
I only ask because I cannot get to a GUI to see what other programmers have used.
Next, I am still looking for information on this option, but what is DCT decimate? I have no idea what it does and I need to get a concise one line description so I can add it to the GUI.
EDIT 1: Also, we are adding a combobox with predefined video aspect ratios for quick uses. What aspect ratios do you guys want programmed? I am thinking of the following:
* 16:9
* 4:3
* 1:1
Anything else?
EDIT 2: I am also adding custom matrices to the GUI. Does anyone know of a good x264 GUI with a custom matrices dialog that will run under wine? I need to do some number lookup for the ranges.... otherwise I will have to ask you guys again. :P
DarkZell666

From x264 help:
--vbv-maxrate <integer> Max local bitrate (kbit/s) [0]
--vbv-bufsize <integer> Enable CBR and set size of the VBV buffer (kbit) [0]
--vbv-init <float> Initial VBV buffer occupancy [0.9](default values are between []).
I'm pretty sure the --vbv-init value should be between 0 and 1, steps of 0.1 being sufficient imho.
Note: If maxrate is specified, bufsize is mandatory for vbv to work correctly.
For display aspect ratios (DAR value, not SAR) :
1:1
4/3 (1.3333)
16/9 (1.7888)
[?:?] (1.85)
[?:?] (2.35)
The SAR value offered by x264 doesn't mean the same thing:
For a given 480x480 encode, it'll stretch to 640x480 on playback if the SAR is 4:3, but a completely wierd 384x480 encode will need a 1.667:1 SAR to stretch to 640x480. So predefining SAR values means asking "what anamorphic resolutions do people generally encode to ?", and since I don't encode anamorphic I can't help you further :p
I'll at least suggest the following SAR values :
71:50 (1.4222:1) (for anamorphic PAL 720x576 => 1024x576 (16/9 DAR))
107:100 (1.0666:1) (for anamorphic PAL 720x576 => 768x576 (4/3 DAR))
I'm not too sure about the NTSC stuff :)
Idea: If the x264 part of the GUI has access to the input video resolution (once resized, if filters are used), maybe the combobox should be called "target DAR", then the GUI should calculate the most accurate SAR automatically. The Combobox would include the DAR's I mentionned above (and more if others complain :p).
I have a question about the x264 options: why is the "save default" button grayed, and why are the options never saved when I exit/restart avidemux ? is it a complete WIP dialog ? or is there something I missed ?
I hope my 0.02€ helped, & thanks for your work on the GUI, Avidemux gets better by the hour :)

As for your last request, I am not sure how complicated that would be, but I do not feel right asking Mean to program that right now. Maybe in the future, but for the moment I really just want to get the rest of the x264 features added.
I never encode anything with Anamorphic but someone about 6 months ago asked for a feature like this (menu with predefined ratios). I do not know if this is something that should really be included at this moment.
I have a question about the x264 options: why is the "save default" button grayed, and why are the options never saved when I exit/restart avidemux ? is it a complete WIP dialog ? or is there something I missed ?
Oh yeah. That.... Well, the x264 Configure GUI was designed around the same time the "Custom" menu was added. Since the "Custom" menu can do the same job as "save defaults" would do, the functions for the buttons were never implemented. In fact, I have removed the other two buttons since like you said, they have never been enabled.

I Hope this helps :)
Btw CQM's maximum coefficient values is "255". So using an unsigned 8bit int should be enough :p Dunno about the minimum coefficient, but probably "1" would be correct (not necessarily useful, but at least standards compliant, and I'm note sure about 0). The minimum I've seen is "4" (in the top left corner), in *.mp4 guy's matrices (here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=887125#post887125).
