I'm still a bit clueless regarding H.264, but it's good to know these options are available.

hi, both the r4346 and your patch version r4347 doesn't fix it

Thanks for the feedback. I think I've now isloated the problem and it's just a case of how to fix it properly. Hopefully I will have another patched build for you to try tomorrow.

gruntster
18th September 2008, 02:03
@wata, could you please try the patch here (http://www.razorbyte.com.au/dev_dump).

Edit: there appears to still be an issue with b-pyramid. It should work better without b-pyramid than before though. Still investigating...
Edit2: found the second problem. Will post another patch soon.
Edit3: new r4364 patch is available (same link as above). A dirty hack was removed from our x264 wrapper a while ago because it was interferring with MKV, however MP4 was relying on the hack. It should now be fixed properly. QuickTime should now be able to play the MP4 files too.

Thanks for you hard work, gruntster

I tried the patch and can confirm better QT compatibility. Whereas before, the .mp4 wrapper didn't work in QT at all.

But it changes something in the container level that makes the video display 720x480 instead of 640x480 in QT

There is still an issue with VFR mode, even without b-pyramid. (r4364 patch 3) (e.g. I just re-wrapped a .mp4 using copy mode on a video encoded with MeGUI with QT compatible settings). The time scale is changed according to mp4box info

Test clip (1.44MB) - (originally encoded with MeGUI PAR 1:1, re-wrapped with YAMB to specify PAR 8:9)

There is still an issue with VFR mode, even without b-pyramid. (r4364 patch 3) (e.g. I just re-wrapped a .mp4 using copy mode on a video encoded with MeGUI with QT compatible settings)

I didn't try copying. I can reproduce the problem.

Do you get any VFR issues if you encode instead of copy?

poisondeathray
18th September 2008, 17:57
I can't seem to reproduce the VFR issues when encoding with the patch :)

I experienced something similar to wata before (RE: the vfr issue), but couldn't reproduce it reliably on every clip even before the patch

I'll keep on testing and see under what circumstances it appears

Thanks

EDIT: I tested a few MPEG2 & VOB clips, opened directly with avidemux with the unpatched build and they all were VFR. Upon testing them with the patched build, all were CFR (default encoding settings in testing for both patched/unpatched trials). Copying mode seems to change to VFR regardless of patched or unpatched

gruntster
18th September 2008, 19:23
Thanks for the feedback. I've found the problem and it should only affect copying. Not sure the best way to fix it just yet...

gruntster
18th September 2008, 21:08
Ok, I have another patched build here (http://www.razorbyte.com.au/dev_dump). Copying and encoding should now be ok.

poisondeathray
19th September 2008, 15:05
Thx gruntster.

Some more observations:

Patch 4 fixes copy & encode on PAL framerate movies 25 => 25

But on NTSC spec 29.970 => 29.973 , 23.976 => 23.977 in both encode & copy mode
(as reported by mediainfo, not sure if it's real, or if it will make a sync difference on a full length movie)

gruntster
19th September 2008, 15:19
Is the frame rate mode still constant and only the fps incorrect?

I used 23.976 fps and 29.970 fps clips during testing and they worked fine. Perhaps it requires a longer sample for the issue to appear.

poisondeathray
19th September 2008, 15:29
Yes frame rate is constant now in all cases. I'll try again on some longer clips and report back if it is a problem

poisondeathray
19th September 2008, 18:09
Sorry for the false alarm, it seems the frame rate is constant, and normal upon farther testing. Nice work!

Avidemux 2.4.3 SVN-r4376 (2008-09-19)
http://www.avidemux.org/

There were a few issues that are now hopefully resolved:
some containers were prefilling to accomodate b-frames, which is ok for x264 since it throws empty frames right at the start. However, MPEG-4 ASP tends to throw them from the second frame onwards, which prefilling misses.
some containers weren't even prefilling (AVI/OGM)
x264 was being flushed with the last frame for every empty frame it originally threw. This works for some encoders but x264 isn't one of them; it needs null frames to flush otherwise it considers it an additional frame.
Xvid and libavcodec weren't being flushed at all

Result of my first quick test, using 6 threads:
x264 displays a lot of "x264 [error]: 2nd pass has more frames than 1st pass" warnings in 2-Pass mode -> FIXED
x264 crashes near the end of the second pass when using "--b-adapt 2" together with 2-Pass mode -> FIXED
x264 eats the last few frames (encode shorter than source) when using "--b-adapt 2" together with CRF mode -> FIXED

Revision 4376 (20 Sep 2008)
# Updated ATK to version 1.22.0-2.
# Updated GLib to version 2.18.1-1.
# Updated GTK+ to version 2.14.2-1.
# Updated Libxml2 to version 2.7.1.
# Updated Pango to version 1.20.5-2.
# Updated Qt to version 4.4.2.
# Updated x264 to r979 (patched).

4376 - [ogm] support delayed frames
4375 - [mp4] remove prefilling and support delayed frames
4374 - [flv] remove prefilling and support delayed frames
4373 - [dummy] remove prefilling and support delayed frames for dummy container
4372 - [libavcodec] support flushing using null frames
4371 - [xvid] support flushing using null frames
4370 - [avi] remove prefilling since it doesn't cater for empty frames that occur mid-stream (e.g. Xvid with B-frames).
4369 - [x264] flushing encoder with duplicate frames doesn't work correctly; x264 wants a null frame
4368 - [encoder] set Xvid and x264 as requiring flushing after encoding due to B-frames. Also check requirements of libavcodec encoders for flushing.
4367 - [encoder] allow all encoders to return a requirements flag
4366 - [Win32] disable buffering for log file so external libs don't jumble output
4365 - [mp4] only let libavformat calculate DTS when encoding (and not copying)
4364 - [muxer] let libavformat know H.264 video may use bpyramid
4363 - [mp4] let libavformat calculate DTS for MP4
4362 - [muxer] remove the use of doubles in the libavformat muxer wrapper when calculating video PTS & DTS as it causes rounding issues
4361 - [mp4] missing update for mp4 muxer
4360 - [mp4] update mp4 muxer (ffmpeg r15276)
4359 - [x264] remove unnecessary delay mechanism as it is handled by the muxer
4358 - [avi] perform an encoder delay if necessary like the other muxers
4357 - [x264] build fix for libx264 core 63
4347 - [Qt] use a groupbox for dialogFactory's frame

LoRd_MuldeR or Gruntster: do you know if there is a plan to add psy-rdo/psy-trellis/AQ settings to the x264 configuration GUI, or a command line box?

AQ options are there already! Psy RDO will be used with the recommended default strength of 1.0, Psy Trellis will be off by default.

You may file a bugreport/featurerequest if you need to adjust PsyRDO/PsyTrellis and hopefully Gruntster or Mean will hear you :)

oops. I see AQ in the Qt4 version, but not the GTK+ (which I normally use). Is there a reason to use one version over the other?

Thanks

Resolve quality regression in r996
Accidentally removed the wrong line of code. I think this classifies as a "10l".
Thanks to techouse for initial bug report and skystrife for helping me find it.

Compiled with MinGW GCC 4.3.2-tdm-1 (fprofiled). Tested with Avidemux 2.4.3 r4435. Avidemux (Qt version) has an GUI option for "--b-adapt 2" now.

@ozhanesk90: Is 128 kbs the maximum bitrate or is it the average bitrate?

EDIT: I just did an encode at 64 kbps and it came out at an average bitrate of 111 kbps. That's definitely wrong.

EIDITē: When downmixing to Mono then the 64 kbps encode comes out at an average bitrate of exactly 64 kbps.

Maybe 64 kbps is simply too low for a Stereo stream?

Actually, we've had that problem already ... do you remember last year or 2 years ago ? I can't remember if it ever got fixed, and I've never encoded audio to AAC with avidemux for my personal use (only for testing here and there) ;/

Edit : see those old topics :

Yes, I remember. Don't think it was ever resolved. Maybe the "Stereo vs. Mono" aka "too low bitrate" theory makes sense?

I thought it was solved and was due to me inappropriately building DRM versions of FAAC, which should no longer be the case. :)

Well, I can easily reproduce the problem with your latest Avidemux build. I select "64 kbps" for a Stereo stream, but I get an average audio-bitrate of 111 kbps.
So either there is a bug somewhere -or- 64 kbps is simply too low for FAAC and Stereo sound, so FAAC relaxes the bitrate restriction...

The CLI version of faac (v1.26.1 from rarewares.org (http://www.rarewares.org/aac-encoders.php#faac-win)) seems to be partially in agreement with you

I just encoded some music with it at 64kbps, 96kbps and 128kbps without problems, but when I asked for 32kbps it wouldn't go lower than 58kbps :)
This is most probably because sub-64kbps bitrates are for the HE profiles, and FAAC doesn't do HE :/

Yup. But in Avidemux it already fails to go below ~128 kbps for a Stereo stream...

Avidemux doesn't report the correct audio bitrate for MP4 and MKV containers. AVI works though.

I checked the output bitrates with Avinaptic. And it says "111 kbps", although I had configured FAAC to "64 kbps" in Avidemux...

I guess this warning from mplayer is a "proof" of it ? :
FAAD: compressed input bitrate missing, assuming 128kbit/s!
But avinaptic is right indeed :)
I even encoded to xvid+aac inside avi just to check, and mplayer also reports ~110-ish bitrates (no warning from FAAD this time).
