Is there a way to get the information to show up in an already encoded MP4? i.e. re-mux it and it'll appear? Or do you just have to start with an .avi and then re-mux it with YAMB/MP4Box to get it to show up?

@Plamen234: We're talking about Avidemux though, not x264.exe output.

Thank you for your replies.
I was misguided by Wikipedia:
Programs Using Snow

The following open-source video editing programs can encode to Snow format:

* Avidemux
* LiVES
* MeGUI

The encoding information are just not there, when creating an MP4 file in Avidemux. Re-muxing won't make those information appear magically.

x264 can be configured in two modes :
* Repeat all headers at each gop/idr boundary
* Put only one header (global header mode)

Avi is using the 1st mode
mp4 is using the 2nd.

Either the infos are not there or they are stripped by lavformat when creating the file.

@Schrade:
It seems the problem of disappearing "User Data" in MP4 was fixed :)

I have the fix ready, but i'll have to wait for berlios to accept incoming ssh.

Should work with the next Avidemux build I think.

Woo awesome! Thanks for explaining it to them and getting it fixed!

Another fix they've done recently is to not write the Title/Author tags in an MP4. For whatever reason this has increased x264 setting compatibility for PSP encoding. Previous to this fix if you enabled many of the supported settings in the x264 config window for a PSP encode, the encoded video would show up as not playable on the PSP.

I really have no clue what they did to fix it since they didn't really mention it in any changelog but I'm glad it works again :) I'm hoping to release a script people can put in their C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\avidemux\custom folder to switch to maximum quality settings that are compatible with the PSP.

There is no bug, it's just not implemented yet. You will have to wait until somebody is willing to do it...
Maybe a friendly feature-request post on the Avidemux forum can speed things up ;)

Hi

I am new here and I have a question:

How can I join two MKV files which are in h264? I know you can join with Virtual Dub, but it only allows XviD and I don't want to reencode h264 to XviD :(

Note: I haven't much knowledge with encoding... so try to explain it the easiest way possible ^^'

DarkZell666

First link here : http://www.google.fr/search?q=join+mkv

By the way as you may have noticed this is the avidemux topic, and avidemux isn't able to join 2 mkv files unless you output the video and audio in MP4 or AVI (even if it does open MKV it doesn't output MKV yet).

Edit: another hit on the same result page from google was this : http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=109485

I'm trying to figure out a way to make JPEG thumbnails for MP4 videos for the PSP.

Does anyone know if it's possible to do this with a script in Avidemux2?

I'd want to do something like load up the video, then choose the frame I want to be the thumbnail by using the seek bar.

Run the script and the script would do the following:

1) Resize the frame to 160x120
2) If it's 4x3, do nothing special.
3) If it's anything other than 4x3, add black borders to fill it up to 160x120.
4) Open the Save JPEG Image dialogue (or just save the jpeg automatically with the video file name.)

If there's another small program out there that'll do this I'd be interested in hearing about it too. I'd prefer something with a seek bar though so it's easier to decide what scene you want as the thumbnail.

seem there is a bug with BframePredictionMode
from Megui
1=--direct spatial , 2=--direct temporal , 3=--direct auto
and 0=--none

but in AVIDemux (i look at the inside of an AVIDemux
x264 encode file)
3=--direct spatial , 2=--direct temporal , 1=--direct auto
and 4=--none

and
you can't select bframes=16 (max=15)

btw Quantizer CRF doesn't accept decimal number like eg 18.5 (it is either 18 or 19)

hi to every1,

I dont even remember when was my last post here, i was away quite a bit :).

I discovered this software two days ago, stumbled on it when i was searching on Google for HD1920x1080i.m2t to DVD conversion....
anyway this program is gr8 it has everything i need, even FLV format....except VOB formating, but it is okay, coz i use free version of muxman for quick mpeg to vob.

my questions:

1)What gui is more stable or safer to use in winXP(avidemux2_gtk.exe or avidemux2_qt4.exe or even avidemux2_cli.exe(command line)).

2) i often use avidemux from my usb stick, but is has approx50MB, so i want to shrink it a bit, if possible, by deleting unnecessary files. The question is, what files are safe to delete if i am using a gui from question 1)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried and deleted qt4 exe file coz it is logically it is a standalone gui, but i am not sure what dlls can i delete......that was 7MBs reduction ......but i am almost sure there are other files that can be also deleted.

Hm, i think that is all for now :D,
plz try

Thanks in advance

after avidemux2_gtk.exe you can safely delete QtCore4.dll and QtGui4.dll and if you don't mind to use the command line, you can delete even the avidemux2_cli.exe

and then UPX all

Tnx for reply buzzqw

I did upx yesterday and reduced it to 18MB,....drag and drop onto upx.exe(default compresion)....

i dont use command line

1) what do you think which gui is more stable QT or GTK?
3) I have linux ubuntu 7.1 and winXPsp2.....which is better and faster for avidemux?

1) what do you think which gui is more stable QT or GTK?

Definitely the GTK+ GUI. The QT4 GUI is work in progress...

This message started showing up after the last few builds, it now happens with any build going back to May 2007.

I have deleted the folder/un-installed but it still happens. Program doesn't see the sample external filter when function is choosen inside AviDemux.

Crashes a lot for me with MPEG-2 while previewing filters . Also the audio and video r out of sync with MPEG-2 video . even after copying both the streams to a new file and only applying filters .

does it generate some sort of crash log so i can give it to u ?

For those looking for pre-built Mac Intel versions (no PPC, unfortunately) you can get them here:

I just checked out Avidemux v2.4 Preview-3 after a long time of not keeping up to date: it's really coming along fine! The amount of different video and container types it can both input and output is fantastic, plus built-in yadif!

There are however still a few problems that force me to stay with Virtual Dub at the moment. First the show stoppers, then the annoyances (all Qt4):

1) Fonts are broken in the filter manager:
http://xs121.xs.to/xs121/07462/Zwischenablagebild.png (http://xs.to)

2) The keys needed to set the editing markers ( [ and ] ) don't exist on German keyboards and you actually need to use Right Alt + 8 and Right Alt + 9 combos. :( Personally I'd love Home/End as it allows one handed editing (yeah, I'm a lazy bastard) but anything simpler than what it is now would be good enough.

Now the non-showstopping annoyances:

3) File extensions aren't appended when saving, you need to type them yourself

4) Open and save dialogs don't remember which folder the last file was opened from or saved to

5) Codec settings are set to default on every program start

6) The idx files that Avidemux creates get left behind after Avidemux is closed

7) Window gets resized every time a file is opened or the preview mode is changed

8) Compatibility with European HDTV files (samples (http://x264.nl/h.264.samples/)) is not perfect yet, some work, some don't, some crash

9) And a question not an annoyance: what exactly is the setting video/postprocessing? Does every video I open get deblocked by default?

I hope the feedback helps, keep up the good work!

EDIT: I just found out that both showstoppers aren't an issue with the GTK+ version, although finding out that [ and ] mean 8 and 9 on the keyboard and that 4,6,2,8 mean the cursor keys may be a bit hard for new users. So it looks like Avidemux is already usable for me, yay. But is there a way to change the language to English, other than deleting "share\gettext" and "share\locale"? German is a bit unfamiliar for video encoding.

EDIT2: wow, I just found the smart copy mode for xvid, another killer feature!

1) I cannot reproduce that. But it looks more like a buffer overrun or a memory/pointer issue than a font problem. Maybe you should try to make a clean re-install and try again. If you still see that issue, you should file a bug report! But remember that the QT4 interface is work in progress, still. Though it's getting better every day...

2) If you think those hotkeys are that important, you might want to post a feature request for editable hotkeys at the Avidemux board...

3) That's because file extensions are simply a part of the filename and on Linux they are way less important than on Windows. Also most containers don't even have one valid extension, so there can be a lot of discussion what the appropriate extension is. Except your player is very badly implemented, it will detect the correct file format independent of the file's name/extension. Last but not least you can rename your files at anytime, so I wouldn't worry too much about such cosmetic things...

4) In the GTK+ interface you can add your favorite folders to the "places" list on the left side by using the "Add" button in the Open dialog. This way your folders will stay there for quick one-click access...

5) That's why Avidemux has a powerfull scripting engine! See the Avidemux FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164) for how to save your Codec settings!

6) Sure, or do you want to re-index your MPEG-2 files everytime you open them? Indexing a 20 GB file can take quite some time, so you will be happy for re-using the existing index! If you really worry about those few Megabytes you can delete the .idx files at any time...

7) That was introduced to make sure High-Resolution material can be displayed properly, even if the video resolution is greater than your screen resolution. Before that "fix" was introduced, such videos simply cause a crash...

9) Not sure. I'd guess that the post-processing option applies at least to MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Also I assume post-processing won't be used with H.264, because H.264 has it's own "built-in" Inloop-Deblocking, so additional deblocking would be nonsense. Nevertheless I do know that the level of post-processing that is applied to a specific frame depends on the quantizer. That means frames with a lot of compression artifacts will usually get stronger post-processing than frames with few compression artifacts. If you want to apply the same amount of post-processing to all frames - independent of quantizer and input format - you can add the "Forced Postprocessing" filter...

//EDIT

You can set the language with the following environment variables:
LANG
LANGUAGE
LC_ALL
LC_MESSAGES
Simply set those variables to "en_EN" in order to enforce English language. To add/change environment variables (I think you will need to add them yourself) righ-click on "Arbeitsplatz" and choose "Eigenschaften". Then go to the "Erweitert" tab and click the "Umgebungsvariablen" button...

Thanks for the response. I'm already getting used to most of the issues.

1) Completely deleting and reinstalling fixed it!

2) I didn't think of looking for an official forum before posting here, but ATM the keys 8 and 9 are good enough for me in the GTK version.

3) Would still be a convenient feature though, it's just what all Windows programs do and saves some typing.

4) Yep, it's fine in GTK.

5) Nice FAQ, maybe it can be made accessible from Avidemux' "help" because that's where I did look before posting here. The scripting system does exactly what I want, thx.

6) Depends on how you use Avidemux, I guess. I usually only edit a source file once and it seems a bit messy that I have to go cleaning up after every file I open.

7) Well if crash is the alternative then I think I'll take the resizing. :D

Anyway, all in all it looks like Avidemux is fully usable in its current state and I'm actually quite exited to be able to say goodbye to Virtual Dub and probably Avisynth and TMPGenc all in one go. If I encouter any other problems I'll get an account at the official forum.

Plz look at my error file posted on this page , why avidemux crashes while using filters .
