Taurus:
Total playtime =05:10, 2 of them old b&w.
5h10m ?
To make this fit on DVD, you have to use a more modern codec like x264.
With mpeg2 you will get this:
If the sources are old, flickering and noisy you will get by chance one avi per one dvd in desirable quality.
Maybe you should try half D1 or VCD Quality if yuo are really in need to squeeze 5 hours of video into it.
And maybe lower the audio bitrate.

I get your point Taurus, but nevertheless, 50 as avr bitrate is not adecaute for any quality.

That's sad and true:confused:
But without some samples and more infos on your workflow,
there is no chance to help or we might need a crystal ball:p

Hi there, is there an option to position the subtitles lower ?
Right now they're being drawn above the back borders. ConvertXtoDVD can properly position them inside the low black border, and they look nicer too.

You can adjust the FAVC profiles in Subtitle Creator to your taste.
(Open Subtitle Creator from the FAVC folder and adjust the profiles via the profile menu.)

You can also use Jeanl's DVDSubEdit on the finished DVD to modify the subpics positions, colors, transparency, etc... Give it a try, it's an excellent (free) program!

Thanks rOlz, But i'll first try Mr_Odwin tip, i prefer making the adjust default so I don't have to edit with DVDSubEdit every time.
Mr_Odwin,
I see that there are 11 profiles, How do I know which one FAVC will use ?
TIA!

my 2 cents:
changing the subs position is in y opinion better done with dvdsubedit, there are 2.35.1 and 1.78.1 widscreen ratios, it will lok fine on one but not that good on the other.....
been there....
have a go with dvdsubedit

Hi, I suddenly have this problem with FAVC 1.0.6
Untill recently, this tool created a perfect DVD image, looking like this :
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB

But now, all of a sudden it always produces this, it forgets creating IFO and BUP files, cannot play them on the PC and also not on a standalone.

I'll be glad to provide and info needed if there is no cut and dry answer to my problem. I use favc 105 and it works wonderfully. I use HCenc with 2 cores and the "best" profile. I also add overscan border. Sometimes I add chapters and sometimes I dont. I keep the max bitrate at default 8000. Sometimes I use subtitles sometimes I dont. My problem is when I tried to use v106 with all the same settings. v105 output is fantastic but v106 output is very bad, unwatchable in fact. Was there any major changed from 105 to 106 that could have caused this? I am using avisynth 2.57a and .NET 2.0. If needed I will provide screenshots of the same project encoded with 105 and 106 so you can see the difference.

Try lowering the maximum bitrate (it's most likely a spike causing muxman to fail). This should be fixed with newer versions of HC.
There'll be a new version out soon that should address this.

Are you using predictive quantisation with HC? This may be the cause as there was a bug in the most recent version of HC. Try using two pass instead.

EDIT: Just to add some observations, it only happens when converting a DivX encoded AVI. When the HC encoding starts, the Divx tray icon appears as long as the encoding is going.
Image:
http://i31.tinypic.com/28v4o5s.jpg
EDIT 2: Some Divx files convert correctly, I have the same problem with 2 DivX conversions, so to conclude it's all about Divx but not ALL of them.
EDIT 3 : Small glitch? When during an encoding, you switch the "Shutdown" option in FAVC, it doesn't have any effect, it seems it only checks the value at encoding start, and changing it during an encode has no effect.
EDIT 4 : I contacted the author of HCEnc, and he told me HCEnc has nothing to do with that, it only generates an m2v file, the problem is clearly in the last step : BatchMux !
Try lowering the maximum bitrate (it's most likely a spike causing muxman to fail). This should be fixed with newer versions of HC.

I lowered the max bitrate from 8000 to 7000 and now it works ! :)
Could that be fixed soon ?

I lowered the bit-rate to 7000 and then tried 6000 but it still missed files out. But I don't understand how doing that would do anything?
I have to merge the vob files together with VobMerge and use TDA3 to create a DVD :'(
The video is 720p.hdtv.x264 matroska file is that has anything to do with anything. Does FAVC not Handle high quality video very well?

Using ConvertXtoDVD it works perfectly, even though there were errors in the original MKV.

For those who would like an easy way to set the FAVC DVD Output folder, I wrote a little AutoIt3 script to hack the .ini file, then launch
FAVC.exe. You need AutoIt3 to compile the script, but it's free. Here's a link to the script:

When I try to use FAVC and Henc, I get to the point of burn, and then get this IMG Burn window which says: "Fix VTS Sectors Failed! Reason: could not find VIDEO_TS.BUP file. Do you want to continue anyway". When I look in the saved folder, there is no VIDEO_TS.BUP file and the ISO file is 0 bytes.

Hey Mr.Odwin:
I recently tried running an AVI thru Favc 2 times & both times the outcome's the same,!Good Sound But Very Narrow Dimensions! even if I change the setting (Use DirectShowSource For avi files instead of AviSource) "enabled"
The file plays fine in MPC "Good Sound & Normal Size" but after running it thru Favc & creating an ISO via IMGBurn it's as if it's been changed to Letterbox but twice as narrow. Now don't get Me wrong I like Letterbox but this is ridiculuosly small.
I ran it again only this time all by it's self & saved the Muxscript file incase it helps:

PS: I found another version of the avi file & ran it thru Favc & all turned out fine

I have encountered the same problem with the DVD not compiling right after everything is encoded.
Here is the solution that worked for me so far and I've done about 4 DVD's since I discovered it and they all work fine.
First I tried to lower the bitrate but I found that even with very low rates it would still not compile. I then thought it might be an issue with HC so I switched to QuEnc and set my bitrate to 7000. So far I havnt had a DVD not compile with these settings. Hope that helps!
It looks like there might be a bug with HC?

Yes, I tried Qenc as well and didn't have the problem, but I wasn't very happy with the quality. Lowering the bitrate in HC didn't solve my problem either.

Can someone tell me how I can adjust the position of subtitles when using FAVC? I have tried all kinds of settings in the subtitle creator (and saved the templates), but still the result is the same. Please tell me (step by step) how I can adjust the position of subtitles.

I also tried saving the profiles via the subtitle program but I found that after closing the program it would default back to FAVC's settings even if you saved over the template or even made new template with the same name.
Here is how you do it at least this is how I did it and I can give you the numbers I used so you dont have to test yourself.
Go to FAVC folder > SubtitleCreator > Data
Open Profiles.xml in notepad
Scroll down to the two NTFC ones (if your using PAL I cant help you on the positions sorry)
For those you will see something like this:
<Profile Name="FAVC NTSC 4:3">
<Font Name="Trebuchet MS" Size="18" Style="Bold" Outline="5" />
<Window DistanceToLeftBorder="80" DistanceToTopBorder="380" Width="560" />
<Stretch Horizontal="100" Vertical="100" />
<LineHeight Value="100" />
<Formatting Lines="2" Wrap="True" VerticalAlignment="3" VerticalFont="False" />
</Profile>
<Profile Name="FAVC NTSC 16:9">
<Font Name="Trebuchet MS" Size="18" Style="Bold" Outline="5" />
<Window DistanceToLeftBorder="80" DistanceToTopBorder="380" Width="560" />
<Stretch Horizontal="100" Vertical="100" />
<LineHeight Value="100" />
<Formatting Lines="2" Wrap="True" VerticalAlignment="3" VerticalFont="False" />
Ok, so here is where you can change font, font size, style, border outline. The setting you see up top are my settings and I find them to work the best for my subtitles. The font I use is something I found online recommended to me for this very use and it works good (the font isnt rough it looks smooth). If you dont have my font I'm told that Verdana also works very well for subtitles.
Save the xml file and now you can open up the subtitle program to view the profiles they should be changed. It's pretty hard to tell via the program though you kind of have to do a convert and burn to see if it looks good on your TV.
Good Luck.
-------------
I also have a question though not one concerning FAVC totally but what is the AVS command FAVC uses for adding in the TV Overscan borders? I would like to increase the border size using the advanced tab if that is possible (pretty sure it is) if someone could point me in the right direction for the command it would be much appreciated thanks.

The idx1.file located within an avi container indexes/lists/reports all Chunks dynamics that are located within that avi container.
Then I cut the credits off of the beginning & the ending of the movie,resulting in an avi thats missing(for the lack of better words) Cells/K-Frames.Now I have a avi who's idx1.file indexes/lists/reports it as containing X amount of data,but the only problem is it's no longer there, because I cut it off ! No problem when it comes to playback on MPC but when I launch Favc one of the tools(MuxMan "I think") located therein won't complile corretly so in short it's the avi that's the offender Not Favc/MuxMan nor any of the compilation of tools for that matter!
But my question is this:
How can I cut out the credits & have the idx1.file correspond with the new file size so Favc can work with the edited avi ?
Or is there a tool that will "I guess" decompile & recompile the avi container & fix the idx1.file,or is there a way to edit the idx1.file so as to index/list/report the new file size correctly,thus allowing Favc/Muxman to work with the edited avi ? Because getting another version of the offending avi is not allways an option,plus when one is placing 3 avi's & a menu onto a DVD-5 cutting the begining & ending credits off of all 3 avi's can yeild in excess of 300MB which can go to video quality rather than credits.
Excuse this Noob if there's allready a tool/work-around for removing credits from an avi that doesn't offend Favc & it's compilation!
But it sure would be nice if there was a tool kinda like AVIMux_GUI that one could just run it thru &

Mr.Odwin not to come off like I know squat about this stuff :confused: "cause I don't" but after doing some reading on the MuxScript error Reference to non-existant scene "Seg3_Scn13" from PGC "VTS03_Ttn1_Pgc1
I can't help but ask: could PGCDemux be to blame for My errors rather than a damaged avi ?
I investigated a bit further and found that its not a problem with muxman, its the celltimes.txt created by PGCdemux (hello, jsoto). its creating an extra reference for chapters. for eg. in my case I had only 52 chapters in the source DVD but 53 entries in the celltimes.txt. I removed the last entry and there it was, muxed without an error.
PS: Thanks for an excellent program!

I've used FAVC many times over the past couple years without any problems, but now I get a wavi error when I try to encoded more than one file at a time (see attached pic). If I close out of the error, everything proceeds as normal (pulldown, next file video encode, etc.). At first, I subsituted wavi v1.05 for 1.06 since the previous FAVC versions used it and worked fine. At first that seemed to work for single files, but now I'm getting the same error whether I encode one or several avis. The weird thing is that if I modify the title.bat file to just encoded audio & mux (the video's already encoded properly), I can encode audio. It's only when I go through the normal process. As it stands, I have to start FAVC, quickly modify the title.bat while HC runs to encode video & pulldown & then use a modified title.bat to encode audio & mux separately after the video encode & pulldown have finished.
Everything else on my PC works fine. Any thoughts???
Apart from that, there's one other thing I've noticed. In this case, I'm not sure if it's an FAVC issue or HC encoder. Although FAVC has a menu option, I still like to use GUIforDVDAuthor ("GUI"). It's been fine up until the latest version of FAVC which allows for mult-thread HC encoding (GREAT feature :thanks:). Now when I select the vob file in GUI, I get a warning about time codes. The scr time is correct, but the gop time is exactly 1/2 of the scr time. It's no big deal since GUI uses the scr time, but I thought you might want to know.
As always, thanks Mr_Odwin for a great program. There's so much flexibility (aviscripts, hardsubs, etc.), yet it is very easy to use.

After Much reading I decided that the incomplete Video_TS Folder I've been seeing is due to a damaged asset,or more precisely the IDX file located within.
You see it(the IDX file) list's KeyFrames(KFrames) that for one reason or another aren't there anymore. And of course there are a number of tools that will fix the IDX file issue, For instance here's one http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DivFix So anyway I took one of the avi's that's caused Favc to render a empty/incomplete Video_TS Folder in the past & I gave it a try.
I launched VirtualDub & placed a check mark in the option (ASK FOR EXTENDED OPTIONS AFTER THIS DIALOG) then I navigated to My problematic avi.
Once the extended options window opened up I selected to put a checkmark into the task "REDERIVE KEYFRAME FLAGS" & after about 15 minutes it was done so then I selected Direct Stream Copy from both the video/audio drop down menu & selected to save as an avi.
Then I ran the 3 avi files thru Favc & found that it rendered a complete Video_TS Folder ImgBurn ready.
Hope this helps.

could you add an aspect range,
probably 1.55-1.75,
which will be pillarboxed and encoded to 16/9,
either optional or as the standard.
currently, anything under 1.75 dar get's a 4/3 letterbox treatment.

Hi, Mr Odwin I hope your still around I think your program is great and I have not had that many problems with it. I managed to sort out my problem me self. shadowhaze regarding your menu GUIforDVDAuthor, I use Favc to convert me avi's then when the vobs are created I use nero vision and delete only the menu favc created not the other vobs I retitled them ep 1, ep2 ect, then with the newest version of nero vision I can add a trimmed section of the avi for my new menu using a program called SolveigMM AVI Trimmer it will not effect the original avi so you can pretty much trimm any section you want then add it to nero vision. Once you have added your new menu click next it will then smart encode, it won't redo the vobs it will only add your new menu, it runs though the process fast then your done. Ive created some really great menu's this way and its fast and also very easy to do.

Hello,
I've used FAVC many times over the past couple years without any problems, but now I get a wavi error when I try to encoded more than one file at a time (see attached pic).
Based on the nice error message, something seems to go wrong inside DirectShow - Wavi opens the AviSynth script, then AviSynth opens the media file using DirectShow, and deep inside there something goes wrong. You say that when you encode audio separately, it works fine - then maybe some poorly designed codec runs into trouble when opening multiple files the same time.
Have a nice day,

Hello,

You say that when you encode audio separately, it works fine - then maybe some poorly designed codec runs into trouble when opening multiple files the same time.
Have a nice day,
:thanks: for the reply. I reinstalled the codecs (along with FAVC & Avisynth) and now Wavi works fine (but there's a new problem - see below). BTW, I use K-Lite Full Codec pack w/ "Lots of Stuff" installation". I've been using it with this installation configuration for a long time w/o any problems until now. I'm open to suggestions if you think there's a better codec pack or installation method.
Now, I can't get multicoreenc to work with HC. :mad:. This happened before I made any software changes/reinstallation. When I try to run HC w/ two threads (cores), the first section "part A" will work (HC screen shows encoding progress, frame rate, etc.), but the second section "part B" gets stuck on the opening screen (i.e. there's no frames being processed). In addition, The "part A" title cache (in the working folder) is the correct size (1/2 the file size), but the "part B" title cache is only 240kb or so. I can use two threads for QuEnc.
**After uninstalling AviSynth, my codec pack & FAVC, cleaning reg keys & re-installing them - everything now works. :D:D:D I still have no idea what went wrong since I made zero changes to my software other than the usual anti-virus/spyware updates. If you have some weird problems like I did, you might want to try uninstalling/reg clean (BE CAREFUL w/this)/reinstalling your codecs/avisynth & favc.
shadowhaze regarding your menu GUIforDVDAuthor, I use Favc to convert me avi's then when the vobs are created I use nero vision and delete only the menu favc created not the other vobs I retitled them ep 1, ep2 ect, then with the newest version of nero vision I can add a trimmed section of the avi for my new menu using a program called SolveigMM AVI Trimmer it will not effect the original avi so you can pretty much trimm any section you want then add it to nero vision. Once you have added your new menu click next it will then smart encode, it won't redo the vobs it will only add your new menu, it runs though the process fast then your done. Ive created some really great menu's this way and its fast and also very easy to do.
I agree that Nero Vision's a great way to create menus (very easy), but I only have Nero Vision Express 3 that came with Nero 6. I used to create menus with it, but it seemed to alter the vobs (there's no set option to skip encoding). That's why I moved to GUIforDVDAuthor. What version of Nero/Vision are you using? Vision 4 or 5 might be better built and able to handle authoring only. If I was wrong about Vision Express 3, then I'd definitely try it again.
I haven't tried changing the vob file names so I'll do that once I get everything running again (*mutters short prayer*). Do you need to change the .ifo & .bup file names to match the .vob file? What about the "Video_TS" .ifo & bup files -> delete those right?
Thanks again for replies and to Mr_Odwin as well.

I purchased nero 8 you click on nero vision, it then lets you add the vobs, next you can remove the favc menu and create your own menu, you can then either add a jpeg or a trimm clip from your avi so you can add video to your menu which I must say looks cool. It dont re-encode the vobs with this version of nero it just adds your new menu you created. When you start the en-codeing it does something called smart encoding. hope this helps

I have used this great program of yours a few times: favc 1.06
It really has helped me a lot.
My question is which encoder is better, the QuEnc or the HC?
I tried them both in the highest quality and if I can remember correctly the Quenc took much longer, and the quality looked the same as the quicker HC one.
I thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Shim

FYI - Check the forum rules on "what's the best...?" questions.
Personally, I like HC a lot. When I did some tests, it seemed to be the better encoder, but it's all subjective and everyone has their own favorite. I like the GUI and the fact you can use different matrices. That may also be possible with QuEnc (just not that familiar with it). My advice is to run a few tests w/ different setting and use your own judgment.
I do have some suggestions for each. First, use VBR 2 pass mode with either encoder for better results.
HC:
- The "balance" setting in FAVC used to set DC=9, but now sets DC=10. I'm sure Mr_Odwin has a reason for this, but I like DC=9 with "normal" encoding as my default settings.
- You can also raise the max bitrate a bit if you want as well, but I've had issues authoring w/ max rates over 8500 w/ HC.
- The default MPEG matrix works well, but you can try the others. For anime some matrices work a little better.
QuEnc:
- From what I've read, do not use Trellis Quant.
- Extreme & slow may give better results, but may not be worth the sacrifice in speed.
Hope this helps.

Hi, Mr Odwin, I have a problem everytime I try to convert some avi files with favc I get this error message.

Hi all,
I was also receiving this error and was coming up with all kinds of theories as to how my XP 64 installation and the associated codec issues were the root cause. And then....
I re-checked my AVS files and found a simple, dumb typo in the calling of the raw AVI files. D'oh.
So add this to the possible causes of the above mentioned error. Not the only cause, naturally.
Perhaps Mr Odwin could add a warning to the error message for we boneheads ;)

The error message in question on me picture says I dont have the lastest version of avisynth but I did and I also know what the problem was Favc just did not like the avi files because the avi I had the problem worked with another encoder. staul62 (dumb typo in the calling of the raw AVI files. D'oh) your wrong its has nothing to do with what your saying. It down to how the original file was convert into a avi. There should be a help notes for boneheads. lol

Hi Mr. Nice,
I'm not sure why you're saying I'm wrong since I am only describing what happened to me. I have the latest version of avisynth installed, I have the correct codecs installed. FAVC failed, displaying the same error message as you received. I then found and corrected a silly mistake in the avisource call in my AVS file and FAVC worked perfectly.
All that I'm offering here is another potential cause for the error message, not an explanation of what happened to you. My apologies if I gave that impression.

I had the same error at one point along w/ the other errors I posted above. Are you using AviSynth 2.5.8 Alpha 2 or the latest stable version (2.5.7)? If your using the Alpha version, that may be the problem. Try re-installing AviSynth 2.5.7. If you have a lot of AviSynth plugins like I do, don't forget to make a copy of the AviSynth plugin folder before unistalling just to be safe. ;) After unistalling, do a registry clean (be careful - make a back up of your registry or the changes b/4 deleting any reg keys) before re-installing 2.5.7.
If that doesn't work, then try uninstalling AviSynth, your codecs and, FAVC, reg clean & then re-install them. Hopefully that will work. Good luck.

If anyone is having a problem encoding AVIs with AC3 audio where the average bitrate ends up to be much, much lower than it should be (for my example encode it ended up to be 32 -- as low as it can go -- yikes!), there seems to be a problem with the MediaInfo.dll (version 0.7.5.7) included in the FAVC package. I was able to load up the FAVC source into a debugger this weekend and discovered that MediaInfo would sometimes return a huge bogus bitrate for the AC3 -- which then in turn throws off the calculation for average bitrate. When I replaced the MediaInfo.dll with the newest version (0.7.7.0), the AC3 bitrate was correctly reported. The newest dll can be downloaded from http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net and can be copied into the MediaInfo folder in FAVC.
Hope this helps.
