Is there a way to have crystal clear/very clean images when upscaling 1080p to 4k?

It could be through other filters or shaders

Thanks

Does your TV have a decent scaler built-in?

I don't know.
What is this?

Is there any configuration for MADvr that is essential to have better upscaling quality?
a simple option . as which is the best : image upscaling and its adjusters

My VGA is RTX 2060 6Gb

Thanks

i would say it is NGU AA but there is a reason this forum has rule 12.

there are way to many variables to make a general statement.

In movies with 480p to 720p, the upscaling of both MADvr and FSRCNNX is very bad.

Is there any way to improve it?

I have a TCL 4k TV that is doing better upscaling than them.

Is this normal?

Is there any specific upscaling program for 480p and 720p videos? preferably for mpc-hc?

Another question:
Is there any filter, shader, etc... that improves the quality of files with deteriorated video?

Thanks

make an image example so i have at least an idea of what you are talking about.

NGU sharp on it own and FSRCNNX are horrible with images with compression artifacts. NGU sharp can be used with compression artifact reduction in madVR.

There was a mistake here: the 720p source was in very poor condition.

One question: when Windows is configured in 4K and connected to the TV via HDMI, is it possible to play a 1080p video on the MPC-HC and have the HDMI output send it to the TV in 1080p? So that the TV can do upscaling?
Or do I have to configure Windows to 1080p for that?

Thanks

Yes. What you want is for the player to change resolution. I do this. So what you do is select the resolution and refresh rate in the player options to take effect when you go into fullscreen mode. This way the 1080p signal is sent to the display and then the display scales it to whatever the panel resolution is.

The reason this works is because if the source video is 1080p and a PC display resolution change is to 1080 to match it, then there is no need for image scaling up or down from the perspective of the PC. It only scales the chroma to 4:4:4.

Is it possible to configure it so that whenever the video has: 480p or 720p resolution, to send via HDMI, it changes to 1080p?
How?

Is this activated when we put it in full screen?

Thanks

In MadVR, is there any automatic feature that reduces the upscaling quality if the VGA cannot process the image? Changing to a lower quality to suit the VGA's processing power?

You make profiles... for example here is my Upscaling profiles:

if (srcHeight < 721) and (deintFps < 25) "720p23"
elseif (srcHeight < 1081) and (HDR) "1080p23 HDR"
elseif (srcHeight < 801) and (deintFps < 25) "1080p23 35mm Film"
elseif (srcHeight < 1081) and (deintFps < 25) "1080p23"
elseif (srcHeight < 2161) and (deintFps < 25) "2160p23"
elseif (srcHeight < 721) and (deintFps < 26) "720p25"
elseif (srcHeight < 1081) and (deintFps < 26) "1080p25"
elseif (srcHeight < 2161) and (deintFps < 26) "2160p25"
elseif (srcHeight < 721) and (deintFps < 31) "720p29"
elseif (srcHeight < 1081) and (deintFps < 31) "1080p29"
elseif (srcHeight < 2161) and (deintFps < 31) "2160p29"
elseif (srcHeight < 721) and (deintFps < 51) "720p50"
elseif (srcHeight < 1081) and (deintFps < 51) "1080p50"
elseif (srcHeight < 2161) and (deintFps < 51) "2160p50"
elseif (srcHeight < 721) and (deintFps < 61) "720p59"
elseif (srcHeight < 1081) and (deintFps < 61) "1080p59"
elseif (srcHeight < 2161) and (deintFps < 61) "2160p59"

Nothing truly automatic, you need to figure out what is too much and set the profiles up accordingly.

Is there a way to divide the processing work of MadVR between: VGA, processor and RAM?
Or is it only possible to use VGA?

Is there any way to know how much processing power each MadVR resource uses? Any graphics?

Thanks

you add an empty folder in the madVR installation folder and name it showrendersteps

now madVR control+j will show what takes what.

no you can not split stuff everything that runs on the GPU run on the GPU and everything that needs the CPU will use the CPU. CPU can not do these types of calculation efficiency anyway and even if it would be possible to split moving data from and to the CPU cost more then you would get out of it.

AS FOR: DISPLAY MODES:

Is it appropriate to customize? Or is the native configuration that comes with it sufficient?

How do I find out which ones my TV supports?

And where do I have to configure them: in the tab: display modes or custom modes?

Thanks

You would benefit from reading various guides or general material to get a better understanding of things.

Then learn by doing.

by default it does nothing.
the TV supported more are hard because nearly ever TV report the wrong refreshrate which is not native but support 4096x2160.

the custom tab is for something different.

Is there any way to display these numbers in graphs?

or some program that makes a graph of the VGA operation and saves this graph for us to view after we finish watching a video?

Thanks

it is not needed madVR load is linear 5 sec tells you everything you need to know from just one frame from of the OSD.

Why does the screen flicker when we open a 4K video in mpc-hc madvr? When we switch to full screen and lower resolutions, this doesn't happen?

Thanks

huhn

the switch to HDR trigger a resync.

real FSE will also do that so it changing the resolution.

I installed here: msi afterburner
and noticed that with my configuration the GPU usage is at 80%

What is the maximum percentage of GPU usage you recommend for use with madvr?

Thanks

huhn

there is no general answer to that. as long as madVR isn't dropping frames actively it is fine.

How to remove compression noise (macroblocks) in madvr? Or by another resource of mpc-hc?

And other types of noise, what is the most appropriate way to remove them?

Thanks

huhn
12th June 2025, 22:11
remove compression artifacts and remove random noise should be the stuff you are looking for.

they are very expensive to use.

Bily

Is there any shader or filter for mpc-hc that does this well and is lightweight?

Another question :
Is there any feature, in VGA or MADVR, that reduces the image quality of the video over time? Even if the options in the folder: trade quality for performance are turned off?

Thanks

huhn

over time no.

Here the quality drops after 30 minutes of filming.
The GPU usage does not exceed 88%.
Is there any configuration I can do so that the image quality does not drop over time?
Thanks

there is nothing in madVR, mpv or any other renderer i know that can drop quality over time.

Not sure but the 2070 super I am using hits 90+ % usage. I cannot tell a real difference when using madvr.

I was taking screenshots last night in D3D9 Overlay using the player's screenshot key shortcut.

When it is written that it is not possible to take screenshots in overlay, do you mean taken from within madvr or taken from the player and/or desktop?

nevcairiel
16th March 2026, 19:07
From the desktop. The renderer can clearly still take screenshots, and the player may leverage the renderers function - depending on if thats hooked up.

Although its unclear of Overlay is even still quite as overlay as it used to be, as these legacy rendering modes get deprecated over time.

huhn
16th March 2026, 19:56
madVR did not implement screenshots for overlay

Sunspark
16th March 2026, 20:32
It must have been a silent update.. in .92.17 this is working. I am able to change screenshot settings inside madvr and it affects the output. But it's weird right? I was under the impression an overlay bypasses a lot of stuff.

Unless, it switches out of overlay, takes the screenshot, and then switches back into overlay automatically? I do have Fullscreen optimizations disabled. Win 10.

I will try taking one with the HUD showing just to see if it's switching out of the mode, however, it's possible it's not quite what it used to be as Nev said, because looking at the refresh rate and the composition rate, it's different than what I'd see if it was in exclusive mode, so that implies it is going through a compositor. Maybe.

nevcairiel
16th March 2026, 23:36
Screenshots from the renderer should really just be independent of the output, anything else would be weird. The renderer has the RGB image already, why would it not just write that into the screenshot output rather then somehow actually screenshot the rendering window?

huhn
17th March 2026, 01:32
he said back in the day that's like overlay rendering original from xp and the original xp version couldn't do screenshoot too or soemthing.
this overlay actually renders a blackish image.

and yes it should do it.it just as it is.

the screenshoot function in madVR works different not all settings are honoured that may work.

nvidia should also not just kill it entirely and instead should have marked it as deprecated. it is as it is.
