I know, this shouldn't be here, but you might be interested...
(sorry for my bad english)
MediaTek bought 19% of ALi (his competitor in chipset production) from Acer, which has after this tranaction only 8.5% of ALi shares left.
Last year MediaTek produced 28.3% of chipsets for optical drives and ALi produced 5.4%. The rest is being produced by Sanyo, NEC, Toshiba and Philips). On the one chip DVD market holds MediaTek 57% of the market and ALi 8.5%.
It is still not clear, what plans MediaTek with this aquisition.

hi !
there's a modified firmware based on the official release 5.0.3.5_2 available on a slovakian guy's homepage.
the modifications include:
- full Windows CP 1250 support for subtitles (interesting for many eastern european languages)
- narrower 'space' character.
- ampersand character missing in original fw added
- elta logo replaced with a nicer one
the new background picture:
http://etchie.szm.sk/logonew.jpg
the CP 1250 reference page on microsoft's web (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/sbcs/1250.htm)
the modified firmware is available for both the elta 8883 MP4 and the elta 8883A MP4.
so, if you're interested, then go to Etchie's firmware page (http://etchie.szm.sk/firmware.html).
although these firmwares are fully functional and tested, you should keep in mind, that you use the firmwares on your own risk and in case of any problems you are not protected by the manufacturer's guarantee.

Any idea if this fixes the problem with subtitles not being centered? Would also like to see subtitles have an outline or color. Any idea if they know if they can fix the XviD playback issues yet?

nope. Etchie's firmware version does not implement any changes to the functionality yet. he's been working only on localisation for Eastern European languages by now.
he plans to do something with the subtitle outlining, because it is obvious that the player has these routines implemented (see status messages of the player), but he's in need of any further information on the firmware available. so, if anyone has any relevant info on this, please let me know.

Can you guys please confirm which MT players can cope with consecutive B-VOP. With or without packed bit-stream?

My elta 8883 and Xoro 311pro work fine with more than 1 bframe if packed bitstream is disabled.
Btw, i succesfully created the interface mentioned above to connect the player to pc serial port.
So i could flash my elta-with-xoro-firmware-wich-cannot-read-any-disc back with the original firmware. :)
Here is a picture (dont laugh):

So the Elta player is working OK now?
Is this the Elta player in the picture? If so, there's not much in them is there!
Please refresh my memory. Is the Xoro 311pro firmware, the firmware that can detect anamorphic AVI's?
Cheers

Thanks for hosting the pic. :) I still only have ftp running.
The elta is ok now. The mainboard is under the dvd drive, the cable between the board and the read head is so short that you cannot place it elsewhere.
Until now i tried following firmwares with anamorphic support:
Ascomtec 3004
Amstrad 3016
Beta firmware for Xoro 400pro
All support subtitles and the AR setting.
Now i can also check the elta firmware, it should also work.

Yepp - I agree
I´m also constructing one now and I´m rather confused.
I do however have all the needed parts and will hopefully have a working cable before the end of the day.
But a simple clear guide (in english) with basic cheap parts would be very useful since there seems to be quite easy to "kill" your player.

I have also succesfully created the cable and flashed my player - the cable looks horrible (ghetto-mod) - but it works!
(Zhnujms solution looks professional compared to mine ;) )
There is of course this guide:
http://amstrad3016.altervista.org/interfaccia.htm
(Use Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) Italien - English)
However - his method is rather "complicated" ;)
I got it working using the following picture:
ftp://194.184.110.46/download/INTERFACE-MT1389.jpg (slow server)
And I payed less than 10 for the parts.
However - I´m not a good tutorial writer, someone else ?

If thats true i would like to see a picture from that :D
I also used the info from this page:
http://amstrad3016.altervista.org/downloads.htm
There you can also download MtkTool wich is needed to flash your player. Seems it does not work with all types of flash memory, at least one type does not work.
The only parts i used was this:
MAX3232 IC: link (http://technik.gelago.de/cat2426/Elektronik/Bauelemente/Aktive-Bauelemente/ICs/Schnittstellen-Bausteine-RS-232/itemADmAvY/MAX-3232-CPE-16-DIP/)
4 capacitors 0.1uF: **link removed** (try to post a new)
a few cables (extracted from an old IDE cable) and an old RS232 cable
Heres a picture from the interface (same as Pulver used):
ftp://zhnujm.dyndns.org/interface/INTERFACE-MT1389.jpg
(the "open ends" of the 2 capacitors are connected to gnd (pin15), the middle shows the MAX3232 IC)
Picture from the MAX3232 IC (Top View):
ftp://zhnujm.dyndns.org/interface/MAX3232.jpg
(the chip is marked on the top side)
And from the RS232 Port:
ftp://zhnujm.dyndns.org/interface/rs232.jpg
(beware its a picture from the plug on your pc, not from the cable)
The connectors on the motherboard of the player can easily be found, they are even properly labeled.
So all you have to do is connect the capacitors and the cables to the right pins of the RS3232 IC (they are all numbered) and then it should work :)

DivX does not offer multiple B-VOP and it's 1WP-GMC is next to useless.
Also it's decoder doesn't offer anamorphic encoding, which some MT players can now display!
Personally I would not bother downloading it!

Looks very good ;)
@m99:
You can download a decription of this testcd here:
ftp://zhnujm.dyndns.org/TestCDeng.txt
Its a bit old now, Xvid 1.0 tests are not included, only version before 1.0, no subtitle tests.
It contains test for gmc, bframes, qpel, different audio codecs, dual audio, different resolutions, high bitrate.

Everbody should download it, i created it in my early DivX Player days :D:D
A simple testcd was useful because so many people were complaining why this or that file (mostly downloaded stuff with horrible types of audio/video codecs and muxing variants  ) did not work with this or that player. I thought it was a bit unfair to make the players responsible for every not playable file so some test files were needed.
But its really a bit outdated now.
OK, thx.
Is there some collection of newer files I can download somewhere? I know there is some newly encoded files here and there, but has someone collected the most essential ones?

from the slo-tech forums:
apparently there's a russian 1389-based player "4TUNE MP-151" that supports centered and outlined subtitles.
link here (http://www.ixbt.com/dvd/4tune-mp151.shtml) translated link here (http://webtranslation.paralink.com/webtarget.asp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ixbt.com%2Fdvd%2F4tune-mp151.shtml&dir=ru%2Fen)
Also we have tested a player on a number of disks from our collection. All purchased DivX-CDs were reproduced by a player very well. Unfortunately, the disks made by us it is independent, to a player have not liked a sound and images podtormazhivali and twitched. Probably, it is connected to installations Audio/Video Interleaving which we used at coding videofiles. At playing MPEG-4-ôŕéëîâ any information on a file it is not deduced, to reach yes the necessary place in a file it is possible with the help of the accelerated rewind or at once to proceed to necessary time - to press button TIME and to enter a time-code. If in a file is present two sound tracks it is possible to be switched by button LANGUAGE between them. The fresh version of an insertion provides loading subtitles in format SRT:
http://www.ixbt.com/dvd/4tune/mp-151/rus_subtitle_divx.jpg
also in this thread (http://forum.divx.pl/viewtopic?t=11042) they say that "Our best polish developers are working on it" (on adaptation of the mentioned player's firmware)
maybe we'll get there once.
while i'm here let me as another question - why is it that my elta8883 (btw which i fixed by building and using the serial interface, similar to the 2 showed in this thread) cannot play back correctly the .avi that gspot tells about:
-----------------------------
4CC: xvid
Bitrate: 916 kb/s
FPS: 25.000
Qf: 0.119 bits/pixel
-----------------------------
it has 2 audio streams, 1. 128 kb/s, 2. 80 kb/s
what should i use to get more info about video stream?
elta plays back this very chunky and then eventually freezes (really bad)
thanks guys.

from the official zensonic support page:
----------------------------------
Changes for version 1.1 (from 1.0)
----------------------------------
1.) Zoom icon goes off.
2.) OSD timer off by default.
3.) .srt, .sub, .smi and .ssa subtitle support
- filenames must be the same (e.g. movie.avi movie.srt),
- the player will auto load the subtitle file, and you can switch it off / on with the subtitle button on the remote control.
- (note there is a limitation on the maximum length of the subtitles, some lengthy 2 line subtitles may have the ends truncated)
4.) up to 8 embedded divx subtitles are working
5.) better support for some .avi files (a/v synch etc)
please confirm that the player can play .sub and .smi subtitles

Well, the problem here might be that while all those players are able to play such subs from a DVD that's mainly because the subs are directly muxed into the video stream, i.e. it doesn't need to seek around for the subs, while external subs will only work well if they're small enough to fully fit into the player's memory; you surely wouldn't want the video to stall because the player is seeking around on the disc to load a subtitle bitmap, right?

you're right. makes me wonder whether there's a way (or a hack) to mux a .sub bitmap stream into the .avi container. if so, should be no theoretical difficulty in playing these on current hardware

well, i tried it for you but was 99% sure it would not be supported. i'm very surprised.
i have not figured out how large the .sub file can get before it crashes the player. the one i tested was about 3 meg (english stream from 'the pianist')
please note: it does not work with an .idx/.rar, you need to have an uncompressed .sub (although this could be a firmware idea - i believe rarsoft make unrar.dll publicly available for developers?)
i have not been able to figure out a way to switch subtitle stream within the .sub file, it just displays the first stream.
LATER: just tried a 7 meg .sub file (english stream for 12 monkeys)
still working like a charm. i'd recently given up hoping for that ideal player to come around, but seems like this one could be a possibility - just need to get that unrar.dll on there

greetings,
i have this problem with my Xoro HSD 400 Pro player:
whenever i switch it on, the picture which appears, takes up
whole screen for a moment, but then switches to letterbox immediately.
what i mean is that it doesnt take up full screen anymore, but has black
bars on top and bottom. besides, theres a white line in the top black bar..
now, if i start playing a video, it's height isn't what it should be, but smaller..
i found a fix for that: if i go to setup, video setup, component output, and change
anything there, then screen flashes, and all is back to normal again - the default
picture takes up full screen, and videos work fine too. but i don't like doing
this every time! it's a bug..
any ideas?
p.s. i'm using SCART connector..
