Here are the steps :
- Demuxing 00800.mpls normally ; no "episode demuxing" here as it would be pointless since this is the first edition.
- Demuxing 00801.mpls, checking episode demuxing this time to be able to use only the required m2ts parts once extracted..
This gives indeed separate extracted video/audio/subs files for all parts.
- Since all parts are labelled [1] [2] etc (example : 5900 [1] PID 1011.hevc) ... i removed the unneeded ones using the "M2TS list" provided by DGDemux, for alien it was 1/2 to delete which is quite logical so i only kept the parts with even numbers (2/4/6 etc)
- I then appended all these parts to the corresponding audio/video/subs etc... part from 00800.mpls in mkvtoolnix
- I then dropped the tags.xml and the chapters.xml that i previously generated with BD2mkv cE to mkvtoolnix and then muxed everything.

It now works absolutely flawlessly.

I can't vouch for very very short m2ts file like 1/2s as my shortest was indeed 30 second (real playtime) but if you have an example i could try it for you :)

Also a quick note : I tried "chop excess audio" during my first trial with DGDemux and this screwed audio in the last portion of the mkv so avoid to check that lol.

Of course, creating a custom playlist would avoid all these steps as you say. This would be the best option but i have absolutely no knowledge as to how to create a playlist sadly.

I have also asked before a few seconds in the DGDemux forum to an option for the "-ep" demux to specify a list of needed parts/m2ts files.

I think a small m2ts file with a short duration should also work.
For -ep demuxing DGDemux don't accept the -sf and -sl switches but this can be ignored and cE will not use such short m2ts files.

OK, good to know that "chop excess audio" not work. I don't understand fully what are the differences between this and remove gaps and strict-playlist.

I understand well the mpls structure but it is different to create a new one, so this will be my last option because I think this needs some time to learn.

Second post talks about DGIndexNV being capable of extracting separate M2TS.
I then tried and it worked ! I loaded the playlist 00801.mpls in DGIndexNV, then went to "open" and deleted the unnecessary m2ts files and reorganised the files as i wanted them to be, selected the audio/subs i wanted to be kept, and then clicked "save project".
It extracted and joined all M2TS selected in the order specified.
While it doesn't extract all M2TS separately, this is very useful because i obtained all the requested second edition parts in 1 file for each audio/video/subs.

So in theory it should be possible to use DGDemux to extract the main playlist, then use DGIndexNV for the parts needed for second,third etc... editions.
I don't know if DGIndexNV support Dolby Vision though as this is mandatory to correctly extract high quality UHD like Gladiator. Losing Dolby Vision is not conceivable.

This is still not a fully automated process but it makes the task less cumbersome as extracting every m2ts with DGDemux was really a pain :D !

Could you make another test with DGIndexNV where you load the 00800.mpls and add all other missing m2ts from 00801.mpls to get one fully stream(per stream type) for all Editions?

When this feature is implemented in DGDemux all will be very easy.

I have already a simple support for DGIndexNV in cE it is used in the BD2mkv editor for the Split feature because I can load a m2ts list.
But this tool is not free. So I want implement it for demuxing in BD2mkv.

A note: You don't need to extract others then audio streams. Only this stream type is the bottleneck. Video and subtitle streams are well handled by MKVToolNix.
But for DoVi is a demux for the video necessary.

This should safe time for the moment for manually creating.

Okay i was able to load the 00800.mpls, then i manually added the required 00801 parts at the end and it seemed to work as well. However it's a bit cumbersome to do in DGIndexNV because when i added multiple m2ts they were sorted by title. Which means if your second edition has files named 687/688 and your first editions are labeled 700/701 etc... the second edition parts will be on top, so you have to manually descend each file one after another lol. But yes it worked during my test and is a good temporal solution.
However, since the objective is to be able to correctly support UHD discs, there is no DV support at all in DGIndex, i just tried with Gladiator and the DV layer wasn't processed so yes, DGDemux support would be a lot better.

Also, thanks for the tip. I knew MKVToolnix could correctly cut video files but i wasn't sure about the subs. Thanks a lot, that will help me save my SSD a bit, i think i must have processed a few TB of data for all these tests lol :).

I have made a bit progress last night to implement DGDemux in cE but I think I will take some time more to be finished.

Currently I have no UHD disc with DoVi for testing.
Gladiator is such a disc, do you know other discs with DoVi?

I took the example of gladiator because it has both Dolby Vision, seamless branching & 2 cuts of the movie on the disc which makes it a perfect guinea pig !

Edit : Okay i also tried a different type of "custom 2in1" for the sake of experiment : I took an extended cut dolby vision remux of Gladiator in .mkv and tried to mux the theatrical cut part in m2ts format from the UHD Bluray. I used MakeMKV to extract the video parts to retain the DV layer for each part and DGIndexNV for subs & audio.
To my greatest surprise, cE was able to create the chapters required for both cut while just looking at the mpls files, i did not even have to copy all m2ts, it seems the mpls & clipinf files are enough to generate chapters in cE which is very good !
So the good news is that i was able to correctly create a new Dolby Vision mkv with both cut, synced audio, but sadly there is a black frame for a split second before each theatrical cut parts transition, so yeah, gonna have to stick to full m2ts when creating 2in1 editions here as muxing mkv+m2ts source files doesn't do well i suppose ^^ !

Gladiator seems indeed a good choice for testing, it is not my favorite movie but I will order it,maybe I find another one :-)

cE needs only the mpls files to create the magic Xin1 chapters and this shows me how powerful Matroska chapters can be, if the player has a proper support.
Blu-ray uses more or less the same system like ordered chapters. For each m2ts which is used there are IN- and OUT- times -> chapter start - chapter end.

Interesting test, but not a perfect solution and yes, wait a bit. I don't know if Makemkv removes the Audio gaps correctly.
Also the m2ts files of the first Edition need to be treated.
I hope DGDemux gets the m2ts-list import feature, if not I will code the workaround with the -ep demux option.

Hi there !

Okay so today i tried to re-remux the Alien UHD to find the quickest and ssd-friendly (meaning the less data written the better) way for the sake of experiment, and tried to see if it was okay to only demux the audio + subs via DGDemux/DGIndexNV.
Alien UHD is a very interesting guinea pig because of seamless branching, lots of audio in different format & channels, and the fact that i want to convert the DTS-HD 2.0 to FLAC like all the remux i make.
Sadly, demuxing only audio & subs was bad as the final output displayed severe audio problems & black screen during transitions on the second edition. It seems MKVToolnix is incapable of cleanly muxing the appended video m2ts files.
So nope, you have to demux the whole content to get a working multi-edition remux on this one (and possibly most UHD).
However the end result is very good.

So the steps are :
Opening the main playlist in DGIndecNV, then manually adding the m2ts in the required order to it. Demuxing video/audio/subs.
Opening the disc with chapterEditor, creating the tags and adding some more for IMDB/TMDB references + chapters files for the two editions. We won't use the mtxcfg.
EAC3To the DTS-HD 2.0 track generated by DGIndecNV to FLAC.
Opening MKVToolnix, dropping every files from DGIndecNV, adding tags & chapters.
This is currently the only way to get a proper result.

The only thing i'm wondering is if it is possible to directly name the chapters of the 2 editions in cE as it would save me a lot of time.
Edit : Found it :) ! Only thing i had to type manually is the second edition.

I was unable to remove the "Directors'Cut" on the Movie Name part though, for an unknown reason it still appears.

I have never demuxed the video stream for a multi-Edition mkv, but this was ever a Blu-ray, not UHD.

Mmh good to know that DGIndexNV works. I still hope that DGDemux will be able to load an m2ts list. But if not, maybe I change my opinion and implement DGIndexNV for the demux process, but merging DoVi is than not supported.

Currently I'm not sure where I should place the DGDemux option.
There are 4 options for DoVi and two more options for removing audio issues.

Where do you think makes it best to place the DGDemux options?
1. in the settings -> external programs
2. in the settings -> BD2mkv
3. direct in BD2mkv

If yes, then there should be no reason not to make it the default BD2mkv program.

The only programs able to extract such layers are DGDemux and MakeMKV afaik. I'm going to need a few trials and error with these two to produce a Gladiator DV multi-edition remux (if possible)

Wow, nice one ! I added your playlist to the UHD and yes, it works, both playing the playlist directly in MPC-HC and adding it to DGDemux. The latter perfectly recognizes all m2ts in the correct order !

This was a manual process.
With the BDTools I have created for each mpls a .json file and than copy and paste the m2ts playitems and the sub-playitems and change the sub-playitem IDs.
This new .json convert back to mpls with BDTools.

But all this should be coded in a small tool without BDTools.

Now we have two options if DGDemux not implement the m2ts list feature.

This would allow me to throw the UHD Folder entirely and keep only the multi-editions mkv for storage (but as i said, i'm pretty sure it's impossible lol).

Yes, there exists a tool to extract an Edition you want from a multi-Edition mkv.
cE -> Multi-MKV: use the Split option.
But this process is not 100% perfect because MKVToolNix split the multi-Edition mkv to parts, which plays fine,
but after appending all parts, there are maybe hiccups on the transitions.

BD2mkv add some info to a multi-Edition mkv for better splitting. BD2mkv settings: Insert an edition with segment information (Multi-MKV)

I had used it for a loong time also but I have many issues with that, so I decide me to keep ALWAYS the original streams.

In MTX there is a switch which allows to split mkv's with FLAC but the result is a damaged header FLAC. The file would be playable but no longer correct for other apps.

A full DoVi support is not ready because I wait for some changes there.

Yes that's correct. I have not included this .dll because on many systems is it already present.

I know many other tools bundle all the needed software, but I don't want go this way.
One reason for this is that I now have more than one MKVToolNix installation folder on the hard disk, just for each tool separately and cE doesn't have to contain MKVToolNix as well.

cE has a more nicely method for that drag and drop the folders from the OS file explorer any where in the settings page for the external programs and cE set it to the correct tool.

It is time again for an update.
A new editing tool is now available for BD2mkv: DGDemux.

The author(Rocky) of DGDemux has implemented all my wishes, and so DGDemux is now better than eac3to for demuxing the tracks.

Unfortunately eac3to is not up to date anymore and I had some problems demuxing eac3 tracks.(sounds ironic, but it is not)
Also there are problems with UHD discs.

DGDemux can generate the same video stream for Dolby Vision as Makemkv does.
cE is now able to create multi-edition mkv's for UHD discs.

DGDemux has simplified and improved many things. For example, when demuxing a subtitle track, a forced subtitle track is also created (if available).
If you don't need to do any extra processing of the extracted subtitles, BD2mkv can do without BDSUP2Sub.
The demuxing of a TrueHD track I find especially good, because you can extract the TrueHD part separately and also without the embedded AC3 track, which saves writing processes on the hard disk.

DGDemux is now the standard editing tool for Windows.
There is already a Linux version of DGDemux, but it is too old and lacks the latest features.
I am very confident that DGDemux will soon be available for Linux in the latest version.

It has been a great pleasure working with Rocky on DGDemux to improve it.
Thanks again Rocky for your great work and DGDemux, which now ensures that we can edit Blu-rays properly.

It's that time again and this time there's a bigger update.

Firstly, there is a new editor in Matroska Tools -> Matroska Content-Grouping.
And secondly, cE is now compatible with dark mode.

Matroska Content-Grouping

The whole thing is based on the beginnings of Haali (https://www.videohelp.com/software/Haali-Media-Splitter) and its TRACKSET -> later TRACKSETEX.
A wonderful system for grouping certain tracks and editions together,
to then select everything in the player with just one action.

There was already a TRACKSETEX editor in the old cE,
but Haali Splitter was replaced by the LAV Splitter (https://www.videohelp.com/software/LAV-Filters) and this nice feature has been forgotten.

With the new editor everything is a little easier and hopefully a little more intuitive.
There are currently 4 content types that can be grouped: the track types Video, Audio, Subtitle and the editions.
All of these content types can be identified by their UID or the ID(index).
The ID of a track type always corresponds to the ID that mkvmerge (https://www.videohelp.com/software/MKVToolNix) and other programs use.
Each type has its own counter that always starts at 0.
For all content types there is an option not to switch this type in the player.
All track types can be deactivated (original Haali only allows this for subtitles).

Why are there ID and UID to identify a content type?

The UID is definitely the most accurate method because this value does not change even if the file is re-muxed.
However, it is not that easy for a normal user to determine these UIDs.
Furthermore, you don't have any of these UIDs when the file is new created.
A Matroska Muxer could offer this as input up front, but then the user would have to create everything manually.
An ID is assigned super quickly and is also easy to determine and is also 100% accurate as long as the file is not changed.

I then thought a few more thoughts about this system and expanded the TRACKSETEX code a little.
This makes it possible to deactivate the video and audio track and the new BCP47 language codes can be used.

The Matroska attachments could also be grouped as content.
For example, a logo or a font for a subtitle, etc.

Since Haali TRACKSETEX was never officially included in the Matroska Specs, the entire system runs on the Matroska tags, which admittedly isn't necessarily the case is optimal.

And now probably the most important question: Which player should be able to play this?

There is currently no player that processes this natively.
But I familiarized myself with the mpv player and was able to implement everything using a script.

The project is called mpvMatroska (https://github.com/hubblec4/mpvMatroska) and is intended to turn the mpv player into a Matroska player.
In addition to content grouping, other Matroska features are already supported.

Since chapters with linked editions are also supported in mpvMatroska, I have expanded the Matroska chapter editor for chapter-segment linking.
This allows you to create main-link.mkv files much more quickly and they are also much smaller because you no longer have to specify chapter names.
Furthermore, you no longer have to worry about start and end times.
A 0 for both values is completely sufficient.

A linking chapter then looks like this
1. Chapter - Episode 1, start time 0 - end time 0, ChapterSegmentUID = x0AA....FF, ChapterSegmentEditionUID = 123456

There is again a new cE version with some bug fixes and improvements, as well as a necessary adjustment for the BD2mkv editor.

MKVToolNix(MTX) has removed the display for the HEVC DV EL track in v81, as this is now processed automatically internally.
Therefore this track is no longer displayed in the BD2mkv editor.
However, this slightly disrupts the normal process for demuxing these tracks, and only DGDemux can now process this properly.
Demuxing with eac3to or tsMuxeR is no longer supported and should not be used as non-Matroska-compliant files are generated.
There's actually no need to demux at all anymore, as MTX now processes everything properly, even for seamless-branching Blu-rays.


There are two extensions for the Matroska Menu editor to make the main playback files even smaller.
The "Nested chapters" correspond to the Matroska specifications and therefore have no extra chapters.
Linking with editions is now also available and creates very small main playback files.

@hubblec4, Apologies if there's an obvious answer to this, but I haven't found one. A while back I was using chapterEditor and swear I could see all of the standard (language, forced, default, etc.) matroska tags when I open an .MKV file in the Matroska Tag editor, but now no matter which file (or even using older versions of chapterEditor), I only see a small subset, regardless of track type or which version of mkvmerge the file was saved by. Is there some way to show all of the tags in the editor, so I can make all changes quickly in chapterEditor or is this by design and meant only for custom/hidden tags not easily editable in MKVToolNix GUI and I'm misremembering?

Values for the tracks have never been displayed in the Tags Editor. From Matroska's point of view, this is not possible because the tracks are stored somewhere other than the Tags.

cE does not have an editor to edit Matroska meta data for the tracks. Only the Chapters and Tags can be edited in cE.

In the Disc2mkv editors there are a few switches for the tracks, such as language, standard, delay. But that's it, because all other track settings can then be made in the MTX GUI later, but before muxing.

The two of us had spoken by email so far and it was about a very strange mpls with a structure that I had never seen before. Since DGDemux (and eac3to) didn't know this type of structure yet, I reported this there too.

Well, the .m2ts is being copied in its entirety instead of partially so it is not good :(

It was a lot of work because in this particular case I have to "feed" MTX directly with the mpls file. Lining up the m2ts files doesn't work that way because the entire content is used.

DGDemux is now also able to demux these special mpls files. But it takes a long time because the entire content is always examined.
But nothing needs to be demuxed because MTX handles everything perfectly.

For multi-edition mode, this mpls must NOT be the first.

Yes and no.
In multi-edition mode, incorrect times are calculated for the chapters and the first 25 minutes simply play seamlessly, which is not what you want.

The chapters are correct for normal mode, but the MKV is/was not.
