When i save chapter from database, it asked fro the name of xml or txt file. Can you make to save by default with name of tabs? For example "jaws.xml".

And can you add option to database download and save to xml, txt files from one click (without put it to the "Matroska", "Ogg" tabs (better with option to save to specified folder, changed in settings). That needs for fast downloading chapter files and then add to video files with batch.
Maybe a button here:

OK, sounds like a good improvement, I will check this.

OK, I will think about it.
The place you suggested is not possible, because if the cE form is minimal, the button is than not visible. Maybe with a right-click option for the download buttons.
By the way what the button "Download tags file" should do? Nothing happens when i try it.
The button does what it says, it downloads a Tags.xml file if it exists. 99,9% of the movies don't have such Tags file. A Tags file is necessary for multi edition mkv's (only with Tags you can set a name for an edition). My uploaded movies have such a Tags file, though the edition names are in german.
And as a wish to show duration/fps of loaded video to select corrected chapter files. Maybe here: https://i.imgur.com/gKzOBj1.jpg
The duration of videos is used for some functions and could be displayed, but not in the cE status bar.
To get info about FPS of a video I need an external tool like MediaInfo, but I have no time and plans to do this in the near future.
Hm. don't understand how to use it with mp4. It says, file has successfully loaded, then what? How can i save it? And it shouldn't to show chapters from mp4? I load mp4 with chapters, and can't see any.

cE can use some older MKVToolNix(MTX) versions but not for all cases and I'm sure, mp4 chapter support was not so good.
You should use latest MTX version ever. I guess it should work also on WinXP, but not the GUI. cE needs the commandline exe files only.
EDIT:
Note that you can read chapters from mp4 files only. No chapter saving to mp4 files.
And why with every start program i should activate tags profiles?
Activate Tags profiles is necessary to check if the user has changed the content of the profile folder manually.

Hi vertigo220
I have tried to figure out the issue, but all seems to be fine. Chapter times are all correct.
After thinking a while I have an idea. I guess you mux all streams directly, but MKVToolNix handles seamless branching material not correctly. Problem is the audio with identical frames.
When I create a multi mkv from a BD, I demux always the audio streams with eac3to, this solves this issue(problem can't be solved with some E-AC-3 streams, eac3to bug).
How long plays the wrong content?
I can't reproduce the issue without the "full" BD. Maybe I find a solution to share BD content in a "full" way without to transmit the entire data.

Hello. I have a bug report and a feature request.
I was previously running the beta version that introduced the search immediately check box. Yesterday I upgraded to 1.16 and on that version I am having an issue where if I download and save a chapter file from the database, I cannot save a second one without closing and reopening the program. So basically I search the database, click download chapter file, then save as, and save the file. Then I click on Database, download chapter file, save as and nothing happens. I downloaded 1.15 and the problem went away.
Regarding the feature request, would it be possible to get the ability to sort the database search results by duration? Or maybe you can now but I don't know how.
Thank you.

Hi peyace,
and welcome to Doom9 forum.
Thanks for your report. I found this issue for some days and it is fixed for next rev of cE. I have made an issue with loading of the editor tab after downloading chapters in rev1.16.
You can use rev1.15 or you can deactivate the automatic to change the editor tab after downloading.
Regarding the feature request, would it be possible to get the ability to sort the database search results by duration? Or maybe you can now but I don't know how.
At the moment exists no user ability to change the sort. I will think about it. Maybe other users want sort for other values.

Do you mean how long is the bit of video that shouldn't be there? It's 20 frames, so a little less than a second (just found it's also sometimes 7 frames and sometimes 8 -- when I jump to that spot and play it then pause right before and frame advance through, it's 20, but then going back and forth again frame-by-frame it's less, usually 7 but sometimes 8...weird). That's in PotPlayer. I tested in MPC-HC and it was 14 frames and then 4-5. So same thing, just ~2/3 as many. Very bizarre. If you mean the length of the whole video, it's 1:37:39 (TC - theatrical cut) and 1:41:11 (EC - extended cut), at least that's what the player shows. That is strange, though, since it's only on whichever edition is second in an MKV, but the length is the same as it is when that edition is the first one. That is, I have two files, one with TC first and EC second, and one with EC first and TC second. Even though the EC has that extra 20 frames in the first file, its length is the same as in the second file, without the error. Even the total number of frames is reported as the same. So either the player isn't seeing that extra length for some reason, or it's not extra but rather replacing what should be there. But if I go frame-by-frame through it, the frame right after the erroneous content displays is the same as the next frame in the normal version (without the interjected content), so it's definitely added in addition to, and not replacing, content at least right there. Doesn't really make sense. I'll have to take a closer look to see if I can figure out what's going on there.
How would I go about demuxing with eac3to? I have it, and have used it a couple times, so I'm vaguely familiar with it, but at what step in the process would I do it and how exactly would I go about it?
hubblec4
6th June 2019, 12:00
Hi vertigo220
It sounds more and more the issue with the identical audio frames, which can not be skipped by MKVToolNix.
To use eac3to you have to set the path in cE settings. And then you can edit tracks like demuxing or convert to other format.
All what you have to do is, demux the audio stream. cE add this new stream to the list automatically. Don't use the audio stream from the BD directly.
eac3to is used internal and you don't need a commandline or script or something else.
EDIT:
The move is split in many m2ts files and maybe each file has an identical audio frame(or two or three).
The durations for EC and TC will be ever fine because the ordered chapters are OK and a player calculate the duration of the sum of all chapter durations. But the chapters marks don't match with the correct video frame because there are duplicated audio frames.
I have started to code a DiscShare tool, and if all works it should be easy to share your BD with others(me).

At the moment exists no user ability to change the sort. I will think about it. Maybe other users want sort for other values.
I would suspect that the only other field that people may find relevant would be number of chapters. The reason I asked is because with some movie titles it's easier to search for a partial name which gives a lot more results so the ability to sort by duration would let you narrow down what you are looking for.
As an example, searching for LotR1 yields "Lord of the Rings" "Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring" "Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Rings" "Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" with other movies intermixed.
Thank you for your consideration.

I can confirm the saving bug I mentioned previously is fixed in v17. Thanks!
This is probably not really a bug as it's easy to work around but I noticed on titles that have a : in the name when you go to save them Windows won't allow you to save it since : isn't a valid character in a file name. Easily fixed by removing the : in the save as box.

Oopps, you are right I forgot to filter the strings against the file rules. Sorry.
When such an invalid char is found what is the best way? Replace by a char like "_" or simple remove?

There are two new functions for the chapter database.
Downloading the XML chapter file directly to a predefined folder (not for OGG / OGM)
and sort sorting for 4 columns.
Sorting simply starts a new SQL query.
You have to enter a title and then you can click on a column header to start the modified search.
Only a left-click sorted ascending, other mouse clicks sort descending.
A left-click in combination with a key (CTRL ALT SHIFT) also sorts in descending order.

I have a few thoughts about cmd part.
If gui was focused on chapters, ceMTTags open it focused on mkv tags and vice versa (add some key (something like ceMCHAP) for open it focused on chapters). And for what purpose there are -l key? Can't see any differences with or without it.
And another thing to improve - can you make not create new window of gui, if program started already? Why new window, if it has tabs. More convenient open new files in new tabs.

ceMCHAP is not a valid term. For chapter editors you can use ceMatroska, ceOGG, ceAVCHD, ceConverter.
The -l switch is for loading a specific editor of cE, maybe in future is there a new feature which needs another "activation" switch. I had not tested a cli without "-l".
If you load only a file than the last used editor is opened.

Yes I could add such an option.

One thing I want to ask is if you could please add an option to link certain predefined chapters names with a language so when using the "Chapter naming" function we can select the predefined chapter name and ChapterEditor would auto select the language we have set for such name, also please add one button to apply all three values (new name, country and language) and exit with just one click.

As a simplest solution: always the first OGM tab is used for change chapter names.

Hello hubblec4. Several months I've been burned out at home especially due to my Mom's condition (my own personal health issues are getting worse themselves), and lately I've been more frequent at Reddit, to interact with their Users, read their stories and problems ranging from many different topics/genres/fields/spheres/subcultures, provide my own experiences, possible solutions and workarounds, and to lessen some of my stress. One advantage of Reddit in my experience is the great chance of Users from other subreddits to find other subreddits (even Reddit results via Google search), thus more exposure and sharing of knowledge. I think joining Reddit is not-so-difficult. I remember a few years back when I tried to apply membership in Doom9 but... short story, I think I was only able to finally be accepted maybe after 3 years. I remember I still have my email (now archived) about my such application. Also lately, I found out there is an official MKVToolNix subreddit, probably still young itself. So maybe chapterEditor could have its own subreddit as well? Thanks and more power to cE.
Also, is the Linux support started with v1.18? Anyway, even though it is for the future I look at, I'm just glad for such Linux counterpart, since I may end up going to Linux after Windows 7 is finally retired. Of course I would hold on to Win 7 as long as I could just like what I did for Windows XP back then, where I still used it even after Vista and Win 7 already long superseded it. :)

Also lately, I found out there is an official MKVToolNix subreddit, probably still young itself.
Yeah, I only started it about a year ago. Back in the day I had my own forum for MKVToolNix. But users don't really want to have to register in too many forums, and I didn't want to have to maintain even more infrastructure than I already do. That's why I shut down the forum. For a while I always referred people to Doom9's forum, but this isn't the right place for most average users either. Reddit, even though hated by a lot of people, spots a rather large population (meaning it's likely users wanting to communicate about MKVToolNix already have an account there), it's easy to register if you don't have one, and the topics there can span the whole range of MKVToolNix-related issues. It's also rather easy to find stuff there with as many threads as desired compared to Doom9's forum with its one-thread-for-MKVToolNix approach.
All in all I'm satisfied with my choice of using Reddit for MKVToolNix support.

...So maybe chapterEditor could have its own subreddit as well? ....
I have a Reddit acc but no time to maintain an extra thread/topic there. For me is Doom9 the best place. All great programmer are here.
Also, is the Linux support started with v1.18? ....
Linux support was implemented with rev1.00. When support for Win7 ends, I want use Linux (never Win10).

New function: start chapterEditor only once
I first had to read a little bit, because there are a few different approaches.
Much was synonymous only for Windows and much out with it.
If possible, the new feature should not interfere with normal operation if it is disabled.
In addition, the sending of the parameters should be done quickly.
But it seemed that you always have to start the new instance first.
After looking for something in the Lazarus forum, I found a good solution with which only the parameters are sent.
No start (and then stop) the new instance more necessary.
The 1st instance is brought to the foreground. However, this only works 100% under Linux.
With a small workaround it also works under Windows, except that the form gets the actual focus.
For the activation of the function I have decided for a rather untypical way.
In the settings you have only one checkbox on / off hook. A file is created / deleted in the cE folder -> 1.ce
Querying if a file exists is super fast and requires no query any parameters.
Of course, the file "1.ce" can also be manually deleted / created.

Hi von Suppé
I have no idea how I could realize this. But I understand your request and you are not the first one which asked me.
Maybe you could use a player which can set chapter points to an internal list and save to a file. VLC? But I guess the time stamps are limited to seconds accuracy and this is not enough.

Not being a request really, I just thought it was cE that I used for this purpose (ages ago).
Of course I can copy timecodes from a tool like Avidemux (goes into a thousandth of a second) and paste them in a simple textfile.
I just can't remember then what tool I did use, that had a button for this.
As for mkv chapter timecodes, I guess I can only use keyframe timings?

An mkv timecode exist not really, it is a unsigned integer.
You can use any time you want, it is not necessary to use keyframes.

It does make seaking to chapters slower and if the player only seeks to keyframes it might not actually seek to the exact frame you wanted. But it usually works. :)

Complete chapterEditor newbie
Can chapterEditor make a single file MKV that skips opening credits?
sneaker_ger
17th October 2019, 10:50
You can skip e.g. openings by adding chapters for the times that are NOT the opening (with start and end time(s)). Then flag the edition as "ordered" and save the chapter to the respective mkv file.
Can chapterEditor make a single file MKV that skips opening credits?
Do you mean an extra file? Chapters can reference other files by setting the ChapterSegmentUID to the UID of the other file. If you need a small dummy file just cut e.g. 1 frame via mkvtoolnix from your show.
hubblec4
17th October 2019, 11:51
Hi Krawhitham
Only with Matroska you are able to play the content of videos alternate. You can skip content, add content from other files, change the order of content and many more.
You must use ordered chapters, activate the ordered flag for an edition.
You can have multiple editions: one with the full content and an other edition without the credits.

Hi hubblec4
Again, I'm busy with creating a multi-edition mkv from the ISO of a multi-editions BD.
Now, I'want to edit the sup files of all editions. With a single-edition BD-movie I extract the SUP files, OCR, edit the timings and text and then export to new SUP (with altered fonts, sizes, placements etc.).
Since several (if not most) m2ts files are used in all three editions, I guess there's no other way than to extract all wanted SUP-streams from the proper playlists seperately, edit them in my usual workflow, and add them manually to the proper editions in your "Disc to mkv" window?
Should I accidentally (or, on purpose) edit one or more subtitles from different editions (but present in the same m2ts stream) in different ways, can I run into problems?
Or will your tool mux all manually added SUP files intact (and asign each SUP-stream to it's proper edition).

I think this is the correct way.
I use BDSup2Sub for editing the subtitle streams directly in cE. After demuxing you can click the "Playback icon" and the extracted sup-stream is loaded automatically to BDSup2Sub.
I use this very often to check if the forced sups are present/correct set.

I guess this is also correct. Editions are more or less a virtual construct. If sup-data and video/audio-data are in synch so all is fine.
Manually added sup streams will be muxed by MTX as a new separate stream, not appended like the m2ts files.

Edit: I had some trouble before I could get your 'Disc to mkv' tool running. I had to rename BDSup2Sub version 1.02 to exactly 'bdsup2sub++1.0.2_Win32.exe'
Are you deliberately using that old version? I understand that there are younger and enhanced versions for this tool.

Hi von Suppé
Yes I use the original names in cE. But you should not use the ++1.02 win.exe. This version has so many issues for editing the subs. Extracting works.
You should use the latest java version of BDSup2Sub.

The java version must not be renamed!!! You have to set two paths: one for BDSup2Sub folder and one more for java folder -> go to settings -> external programs.

That was I was thinking, and I am trying my *ss off for a while to make it work as it should.
But, as said earlier, after pointing to the folder where I keep BDSup2Sub512.jar, after banging the green start button, I keep getting this error:
bdsup2sub++1.0.2_Win32.exe
External program not found
Edit: maybe I have a fault in my path to java: it's now C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_231\bin
Can you confirm this is the right path (for now)?

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_231\bin
this is my path to java.
What is your path to BDSup2Sub (java-version)? maybe is there an issue?
The original file name of for the java version is "BDSup2Sub.jar", so please rename your file (remove the version-number).

Renaming the .jar file did the trick.
Now that things seem to work, I assume that cE has no problem with 32 bit version of java?
I once read you could have both 32 and 64 bit version.
I tried it out but ran into trouble launching .jar files so I went back to install 32 bit only.
Thanks hubblec4 :-)

I can not say which version is necessary for BDSup2Sub. Maybe both 32 or 64 bit working.
I use the 64bit version of java.

I got the latest version after hearing it has the ChaptersDB included (was using a much older version).
Using a disc with a small studio logo m2ts before the full movie m2ts now. The MPLS loader nicely maps out what chapter belongs to which m2ts.
I want to remove the chapter that's associated with the studio logo, and have the rest sync back without it.
I tried "delete chapter" but this leaves the main m2ts chapters at the same time code. e.g first chapter was 00:00:00, 2nd 00:15:00. After I removed the first chapter the 2nd doesn't roll back to 00:00:00.
Is there a way to do this automatically, or do I have to manually use the time adjustment feature? Maybe there is and I couldn't find it.
