Hi,

I'm a user of OTR/CutAssistant and looking for a codec package to edit divx and h264 tv recordings.
Are the included codecs in mpui-package available for encoding in AviDemux or any other encoding application after installation of the package or are the codecs for viewing purposes only ?
Are the included codecs providing me with a picture of the video in edit-window (Cut Assistant) ?

Avidemux uses ffmpeg for video (de)compression. Installing anything won't help Avidemux to support more formats. But I don't think there is a need to support more formats then Avidemux currently does.

MPUI is a GUI for MPlayer. MPlayer is based on ffmpeg too, so if I exclude the binary codecs/filters, Avidemux supports the same formats as MPUI.

CutAssistant uses AsfBin (ASF/WMV support), Avidemux, MP4Box and VirtualDub. The only application of of these, which can use codecs, is VirtualDub. But VirtualDub can cut video even if doesn't have a codec, it just won't display it during processing. The only codec you need for VirtualDub is ffdshow (it's VfW part, not the DirectShow video decoder).

Avidemux uses ffmpeg for video (de)compression.
Wrong! Avidemux uses the "libavcodec" library (which is part of the ffmpeg project) for decoding most audio/video formats, but it doesn't use the "ffmpeg" application itself. No idea why this myth is still floating around. See the "Common myths" article:

http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/index.php?title=Common_myths

Installing anything won't help Avidemux to support more formats. But I don't think there is a need to support more formats then Avidemux currently does.

Right, Avidemux uses *only* it's own "built-in" decoders and splitters. H.264 and MPEG-4 (Xvid, DivX, etc.) are already supported (using libavcodec). Nevertheless you can still use Avisynth input (via AVSProxy GUI), in case Avidemux doesn't support your video format. This gives you access to DirectShowSource(), AVISource() and ffmpegSource(). If that cannot open your file, nothing can...

MPUI is a GUI for MPlayer. MPlayer is based on ffmpeg too, so if I exclude the binary codecs/filters, Avidemux supports the same formats as MPUI.

Again: MPlayer doesn't use ffmpeg nor is MPlayer based on ffmpeg. MPlayer only shares a few libraries with the "ffmpeg" project (e.g. libavcodec and libavformat).

thank you both for your help! I have a clean windows installation in front of me and I don't want to mess it up again.
I'm wondering what would be THE codec package I had to install when working with Avi and Quicktime ? Is it possible to have all Codecs in one player ? Would MPUI or VLC be that ONE player ?

- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and

It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your

thank you both for your help! I have a clean windows installation in front of me and I don't want to mess it up again.
I'm wondering what would be THE codec package I had to install when working with Avi and Quicktime ? Is it possible to have all Codecs in one player ? Would MPUI or VLC be that ONE player ?

Again: Neither MPlayer nor Avidemux use any "Codecs", they work with their own "built-in" decoders/splitters only!
The "Binary Codecs Package" for MPlayer is a collection of third-party DLL's MPlayer needs to playback certain proprietary formats.
But those are not DirectShow Filtersn or VfW Codecs! It's not related to any of those crappy "Codec Packs" floating around on the net!
My installer will extract the "Codec" DLL's to MPlayer's "codecs" folder and that's it. They are not registered system-wide or anything.
No other application, excpet MPlayer, will even notice that this has just happened...

MPUI is not a Player, it's a front-end to MPlayer. The same applies to SMPlayer.
VLC is a stand-alone application, which uses it's own decoders/splitters, just like MPlayer does, but 100% independent from MPlayer.
MPlayer and VLC don't share any DLLs...

There was a SSE related crash fixed recently. But it was in the AC-3 audio decoder

Could you try latest build from here:

MPlayer for Windows has been updated :)

Does this new package run correctly on Windows Vista? When I got this laptop w/ Vista back in January the MPlayer package switched my desktop theme to "Basic" mode because of some issues w/ the default "Aero" theme.

None that I'm aware of, but it's recommended to use the latest runtime libs anyway (bugfixes, optimizations, etc).

Unfortunately there is a new bug that occures with Qt 4.4.0: The SMPlayer logo in the main window won't be displayed.
That bug has already been fixed by RVM just one day after my last update. That's life...

Hi,

it seems in the (2008-05-13)-build I can't adjust colour or contrast or brightness...
Neither with the keys nor with the equilizer.

I don't know if this is due to the GUI or mplayer...
Or is it just me??? I did everything like I allways do...
I just untick *Use Volume Normalisation* and *File association*.

Please tell me.

Nonetheless thanks for the package.

@Clobon
As discussed earlier, the Equalizer will only work in "Hardware Mode" if your graphics driver does support and allow that!
There might be some setting in your graphics driver configuration that needs to be changed.
I use an ATI card and the setting is located at "Avivo Vidoe > Basic Color > Use application settings" (that options needs to be checked!)

Additionally you can always use the Equalizer in "Software Mode" with all graphics drivers, renderers and settings:
Just enable "General > Video > Use software video equalizer" in SMPlayer's preferences menu...

Hi,
Did you read/follow my anser to your previous post?

yes, it's always on *Use application settings* (It's a Nvidia btw).
Otherwise the games I play won't let me do the finetuning.

I must have screwed up somewhere. Just the tiny little checkbox
you end up searching for all day long... as always... I kinda wished
it's a bug so I wouldn't have to search for the cause

To use the equilizer in software mode works of course but it's not
my default.

Thanks and sorry for bothering you. MfG, Clobon

A little note to everyone using OpenGL: I updated the man-page to recommend

-vo gl:yuv=2:force-pbo:ati-hack -dr -noslices

since on my PCs (one Athlon X2 3800+ with a GeForce 7600 GS and a Athlon 800 with a GeForce 3) this gives the fastest playback, even faster than overlay (though for the GeForce 3 I need to use yuv=1).
I only tested on Linux though, so I'd be happy to hear how it works for you.

LoRd_MuldeR
22nd May 2008, 14:50
The commandline you posted doesn't work here, because neither "force-pbo" nor "ati-hack" sub-options are recognized

But I can use the following line:
-vo gl:yuv=2 -dr -noslices

Performance is still MUCH worse than DirectX/Overlay, making it unusable for any HD content.
This is under WindowsXP using an ATI Radeon 1950XT with latest Catalyst...

Sorry, I forgot to say: needs at least MPlayer SVN r26713. Seems like that version is not yet available precompiled...
And I also forgot to say, according to the person who proposed that approach first it makes a huge difference for ATI cards (the implementation is quite a bit different from the original proposal though).

I see. Can't wait to test it. One question though:
Is the proposed commandline intended to work with all (or at least most) hardware configurations?
Or in other words: Is it safe to set that as default values in my installer?

First of all, you will probably have to leave the -dr out, for MPEG1/2 video it does not work together with ati-hack (which is required for all ATI users at least currently, maybe ATI/AMD will fix it).
Apart from that, it should work with all OpenGL 2.0-compatible hardware (GeForce 4 and higher for NVidia, whatever ATI produced around the same time - though it will probably need more recent drivers than those these cards originally shipped with). I have no idea about Intel cards though - they are not OpenGL 2.0 officially but at least the hardware should be able to do everything that is needed for this command-line, the question is just if it's implemented in the drivers...

If it's completely garbled, it is almost certainly the problem that ati-hack is supposed to help against. You could try if it works when you scale the video to e.g. 256x256 (-vf scale=256:256), but since it looks very much like another driver bug to me, in the worst case it might not be fixable at all by me.

-vf scale 256:256 does help, but the color still display incorrectly, ive tried both xp and vista with catalyst 8.5,
currectly its only work with yuv=0, yuv=2 or 4 give the same garbled output.

Does force pbo only work with yuv=2?

I found a possible bug in MPlayer:

I got an AVI file (captured with a digicam) that makes MPlayer crash immediately.
The video format is MJPEG. Audio is not present, although MPlayer seems to detect an "ADPCM" stream.
Sample file is here: crash_sample.7z (http://mplayer.somestuff.org/misc/crash_sample.7z)

This is what MPlayer puts out, reproduced with several builds from various sources:

It seems to file is strange in some way. This is what AVInaptic says:

[ About file ]

Name: S3000002.AVI
Date: 27/05/2008 13:00:49
Size: 6,786,612 bytes (6.472 MB)

[ Generic infos ]

L'AVI č corrotto: dichiara 1 streams, ma ne vengono trovati 2

Nevertheless this file seems to play 100% fine in VLC Player as well as with MPC+ffdshow.
Also I think it played okay with an older revision of MPlayer a while ago...

[EDIT]

Yes, using an old build of MPlayer (r25803) the file plays 100% fine:
