There already is a working OpenSource (free) H.264 Decoder in ffmpeg/libavcodec, so the MPlayer Team will definitely stay with that...

I don't want them to change the used decoder, I would just love to be able to use CoreAVC, too.

In terms of performance CoreAVC still might be the preferred choice, at least when we talk about pure software H.264 Decoders.

I am talking about pure software decoders.

Last but not least performance only matters when it comes to HD material. For regular SD material an up-to-date PC has far enough CPU power for smooth playback, even when using the ffmpeg/libavcodec H.264 decoders!

That's exactly why I want to use CoreAVC: I mostly watch HD material and my PC is not up to date.

rvm described a method: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1021553

Thanks, but I'd like to use it with the CPU optimized builds by Celtic Druid.

Thanks, but I'd like to use it with the CPU optimized builds by Celtic Druid.
If you watch HD H.264 videos, then MPlayer will spent ~99% of it's CPU Time in the H.264 decoder anyway. Hence the H.264 Decoder definitely is the important bottleneck! Everything else will be more or less negligible! So in case you use the CoreAVC Decoder, I wouldn't care too much about CPU Optimized builds of MPlayer, I would care about the Optimizations in CoreAVC ;)

are there any plans by anybody of compiling mplayer with the latest commited eac3 patches, so i could watch my new hd discs?

Cannot find any E-AC3 related commit in the SVN log:
http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk/?view=log

So I guess the E-AC3 patch was not committed yet...

Well, there are some patched (unofficial) MPlayer builds out there that seem to support CoreAVC.
But I guess this will work on the Windows platform only and of course it works only if you own CoreAVC!

LoRd_MuldeR

Well, as far as I know, CoreAVC is delivered as .ax file, this means it's actually a Windows DLL file.
So unless you "steal" the sources and compile a Linux binary, the only way to load CoreAVC under Linux would be Wine.
But no idea if CoreAVC can be activated in Wine (I know CoreAVC requires activation!)

Cannot say what that patch you refer to actually does...

That patch enhances mplayer's dll loader so it can successfully load CoreAVC. There is also a tool to write the registry entries (your activation code) into a file the dll loader will read. This way it's possible to use CoreAVC in linux. The patch at sherpya's site is most likely based on http://code.google.com/p/coreavc-for-linux/ or some older version of that code. The coreavc-for-linux site also has the registry writing tool and instructions on how to use it.

I'm not sure if this is a Rule #6 violation :scared:

I want first denoise and then resize, the correct syntax is:
a. -vf hqdn3d=4:3:6,scale=1280:-2
or
b. -vf scale=1280:-2,hqdn3d=4:3:6

Thanks for any answer.

If you're missing a Qt dll, you can get it here (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/smplayer/qt-dlls-4.3.2.7z).Thank you, but it's not missing, I think there's something wrong with MuldeR's package. I installed smplayer_0.5.62_full_setup.exe on my machine, it works well. I checked MD5 of these three files, they are the same as yours. I reinstalled MPUI.2007-12-27.Full-Package.exe just now, and found these three files are all different from yours, qtgui4.dll is only 3.21MB, much smaller than yours. I replaced these three files with yours, but it won't help. Now I'm sure there must be something wrong since version 11.18, please find it out.

UPX

Executable compression is any means of compressing an executable file and combining the compressed data with the decompression code it needs into a single executable.

Running a compressed executable essentially unpacks the original executable code, then transfers control to it. The effect is the same as if the original uncompressed executable had been run, so compressed and uncompressed executables are indistinguishable to the casual user.

A compressed executable is one variety of self-extracting archive, where compressed data is packaged along with the relevant decompression code in an executable file. It is often possible to decompress a compressed executable without executing it (two such programs are CUP386 and UNP).

Most packed executables decompress directly into the memory and need no free file system space to start. However, some decompressor stubs are known to write the uncompressed executable to the file system in order to start it.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPX for more info...

Your video is encoded in Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP).
If you see more blocks in MPlayer than in VLC, this means: VLC is using some postprocessing/deblocking filter that MPlayer isn't using.
So if you are using the SMPlayer front-end, then try "Video » Filters » Postprocessing" and see the results ;)

//EDIT

There's something strange going on with that video:
Playback performance in MPlayer is horrible. I get one frame every 10 seconds. audio and video totally out of sync.

Also I see this message on the log:
************************************************
**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

I highly doubt my machine (Core2 Quad Q6600) is too slow to play this ;)
Also VLC or MPC+ffdshow play that file absolutely smooth. Really strange...

rvm
19th January 2008, 01:02
There should be something really strange with that file. It reports to be at 119.881 fps, and mplayer tries to play it at that speed (that's why it says your computer is too slow, it can't play it at such speed).

It plays better adding these options: -forceidx -fps 25
But the audio is not sync'd. Maybe it's a matter of finding the right value for the fps.

LoRd_MuldeR

I have "unpacked" the video with Avidemux and now it plays 100% smooth at 119.881 fps.

Use the "software scaling" filter in SMPlayer ;)

@Yong: Good suggestion. I added -vf pp=ac,hqdn3d=3:2:3:3 to my cmd line and I think it is improving the video a little bit but the picture is still blurry though.

@LoRd: how do I include that to my cmd line?

hmm actually pp=ac is high quality dering + deblocking filter, while hqdn3d is high quality denoiser :p
if u wan to add software scaler, to existing filter chain,
ur cmd should look like this, eg:

-vf pp,hqdn3d,scale=1024:-2

by default, mplayer use bicubic for software scaler, but its much complicated for tweaking imho :D

if u wan to make ur video look sharper, u can try unsharp mask,
eg: unsharp=l3x3:1.5:c3x3:1.5

LoRd_MuldeR
20th January 2008, 12:42
@LoRd: how do I include that to my cmd line?
Use this in order to upscale the video to fullscreen resolution, using "lanczos" software scaler:
-sws 9 -vf-add scale=1280:-2

Assuming your horizontal screen resolution is 1280. Otherwise replace the "1280" with whatever fits your horizontal screen resolution.
This is going to eat a lot of CPU cycles, so you better don't use it with HD stuff (which would be senseless anyway).

I don't think the problem it's postprocessing related; VLC plays it OK even with postprocessing=0.

Something is borked with your file. I'm not sure what it is, but MPlayer obviously doesn't like it! Might be the framerate of 119.881 fps, which is exceptionally high! Also the video uses "packed bitstream". Packed bitstream is a "hack" introduced by DivX to workaround limitations of VfW. Packed bitstream produces improper MPEG-4 bistream, so it might cause problems with some players! At the same time there are some (hardware) players that require packed bistream. The best is to avoid packed bitstream by all means, except you have one of those Standalones that require it. Avidemux can "unpack" (or "pack") the MPEG-4 stream without re-encoding it. That's what I did with your files. The results plays better in MPlayer... The really stange hing is: Sometimes the (unpacked) video plays 100% fine in MPlayer and sometimes it doesn't! I cannot find the reason. Seems to be completely random. I don't change anything and suddenly it plays okay. When I try later, it doesn't play...
