Well, my settings were NTSC, Arial Narrow font, bold at 20pt. Like I said, the spots arent very bothersome, but there are some there. I just opened the sup in the Manipulate tool of SC, and i couldnt see them, but theyre definitely there in the dvd I authored.

Okay, I found some grammatical errors in my subtitles, so I went ahead and fixed them and made the font Arial Bold 20pt (instead of Arial Narrow) and look at what happened!

@Like the Cure: I've examined your SUP files with SC and srt2sup (import sup feature), and can't see the error you mentioned. You did use SCv1.8.5, didn't you? Would you mind uploading the IFO and text subtitle file you've used? I suppose you didn't do anything else with the SUP before authoring. And what did you use to author the DVD, and what to display it (create the screenshot)?

I authored the DVD with IFOedit, and as I said, it worked great before I changed the font size (except for that problem in my earlier post). I couldn't find any of those lines in the SUP files in SC either, but they are definately always present when I play the DVD in Cyberlink PowerDVD 6.

(I'm not sure if you mean the IFO I loaded in SC to get the color palatte from or the one created after authoring the DVD. Thats the one from the final DVD.)

This is odd... I played the DVD in Windows Media Player instead of PowerDVD, and the subs looked fine! The same frame as the one in the link "Oh My God" has absolutely no lines below it (but that little thing sticking out of the right of the question mark is still there....). I would take a picture, but I cant find the capture screen option in WMP. So if this problem is related to the player, how can I be sure it wont happen on my standalone DVD player?

Another post in a series of strange events... I just made a new SUP from that same SRT, authored my DVD with IFOedit, and copy/pasted the color pallette and whaddyaknow... Everything is fine. Heres a screencap from PowerDVD:

SC version 1.8.6 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/subtitlecreator) has just been released. This release contains a new (experimental) feature, i.e. DVD authoring wizard (under tools menu). It allows you to add a new subtitle to a simple DVD (without menu) in one go (see picture below) by working together with two great freeware programs, PgcDemux and MuxMan (please install them if you haven't already). As it is experimental, please let me know about anything that goes wrong...

Choose the location of your DVD (DVD shrink output, so all unwanted subtitles and audio have already been stripped)
Choose where you want the output to go
Select a text subtitle or SUP subtitle (which you already created in a previous step) and set its language
If you chose a text subtitle, synchronize it (using the original subtitle demuxed in step 2), and position it.
Finally, call PgcDemux to demultiplex and MuxMan to multiplex everything together again.

Overview of new features:

You can save/delete your current settings and create new profiles (a profile contains your prefered font and other formatting settings).
A DVD Authoring Wizard allows you to add a subtitle to a simple DVD (without a menu), at least if you have PgcDemux and MuxMan installed.

Upgrades and bug fixes:

Automatic subtitle positioning has been fixed.
Vertical alignment - middle, was broken, and has been fixed.
Editing time values has now become easier: you can use the up/down arrows to increase/decrease the time with 100ms increments, and moving around skips ':' and ','.
Added a right-click option to the listview, so you can jump to the next subtitle that is too long
Renamed "Show actual output (no AA)" to "Show actual output", as the picture still uses anti-aliasing, but doesn't rely on fancy windows AA, which cannot be equaled by a DVD anyways, as a DVD only allows four colors for subtitles.
Renamed "Check subtitle length" to "Show too long subtitles"

I noted that you are up to 1.8.7 on sourceforge...

I was wondering how awkward it would be to have the release number as part of the filename at download..I have had to change mirrors and re-download the program occasionally when I was getting a version older to the one I was supposed to be getting. If you put the version in the filename, I could see this and change mirrors before downloading.

If this is a hassle, don't worry about it. The software still works great!

Nice work on the SubtitleCreator! I haven't tried everything yet, but so far everything seems to work very well for me. I've successfully added dutch subtitles to a dvd. The menu, chapters, movie, subtitles and colors are all okay. So far, I have two features on my wishlist:
1. Better anti-aliassing / anti-flicker-filter (I have made an algorithm for this)
2. Save (modified) colors back to IFO (for self-encoded movies, instead of rips)
I wanted to implement these features myself, so I tried to download the sources from SourceForge. But when I tried to open the solution I got a bunch of errors about missing files. I miss the complete project named Setup1 and I miss a lot of files in the SubtitleCreator project (like: AboutForm.cs, DvdWizardForm.cs, etc.) Am I doing something wrong or is the project not complete in CVS?

When I choose DVD Authoring wizard and show location of pgdemux.exe (muxman.exe is not in the same directory as pgdemux.exe), program crashes after changing settings: video format or background picture.

However I'd like to draw you attention to one bug which was reffered before by sharkybacsi in his post on May 26. I'm using the latest version (1.8.7) of SC but don't know why it is impossible to change script language of the font - all fonts in SC have only that language which is set in Windows Regional Settings (in my case Baltic). If I need to make sup file with Russian subtitles I need to change regional settings and restart my computer, and that isn't very convenient. Could you please fix that?

Ive got "small-ish" problem with SC.

I edited subtitles (.srt) in Subtitle Workshop and loaded it in SC and then loaded the DVD (PAL). The subtitles show up fine against the normal background but doesnt show when DVD is loaded. Ive tryed pretty much everything i can think of, but the problem is still there.

These lines are ignored by your program and are not showed.Most srt-processing applications expect formatting instructions in these pointed brackets ... e.g. <i>Sample</i> would result in the display of Sample ... you might simply want to replace these brackets with a different type of brackets.

Vertical subtitling is very common in Japanese and Korean movies and DVD's. But I haven't found a tool that can do it.
I think SubtitleCreator is the most flexible SUP creating tool, which supports many different font styles.
So I would really like Paddington to consider adding a vertical alignment option to SubtitleCreator.

And it would be very nice if SubtitleCreator supports different languages. There are many people in my country who like SubtitleCreator but they often find it difficult to use it because it says everything in English. I would be very happy to translate it into my language.

As it has been a long time without a new release - I have been working a lot with CoNS to improve (we hope) many things, so it's time for a new release.

The new version v1.9.0 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/subtitlecreator/) further contains some additional improvements (and some new bugs for you to find :P), although I am very grateful for all the testing that CoNS has already done.

Many improvements in the DVD Author wizard - some visible, many internal to better process the IFO files
Added an option to change the distance between lines (line height).
In the Manipulate SUP tool, you can use the context menu to delete the currently selected subtitle.
In the help menu, I've added links to subtitle download sites.
Synchronize can now also be done using other subtitle text files.
Saving settings is separated from saving the profiles - the results are stored in Settings.xml and Profiles.xml respectively. Additionally, they are stored permanently (can be deleted during uninstall), so the changes are saved between updates. SC uses the following folder, C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe\Application Data\SubtitleCreator\, if possible. Else, it defaults to the program's folder.
Added the option to switch the code page so you don't need to change your Regional settings in the Config panel, e.g. if you normally use English but sometimes need to add Romanian subtitles, you can set the encoding to East/Central European, so the characters show up correctly. If there are code pages missing, let me know, or else add them to the Settings.xml file yourself.
Inserting a shortcut now displays a description, instead of the definition (plus included a smiley shortcut).
Changed the behaviour of the Shift time dialog a little - you can use the up/down arrows to increment/decrement by 100ms.
New option to change text changes before exiting the program (so you have a chance to save the file using the existing name, or cancel and return to the program).
Profile menu has been improved, so you can now delete profiles: if you change the profile and press save, it will ask for a new name for the profile.
Changed the default color palette to the default used by MuxMan and PgcDemux.
Added a check for subtitle duration (if the char/sec exceeds a specified maximum, specified in the Settings.xml file, color the background green - the more green, the higher the error).
Added an option to remove text for the hearing impaired during load, i.e. text [HEARING IMPAIRED] or (HEARING IMPAIRED).
Added an option to deselect all subtitles with http or www or @ references (you can also set it during load).
Splitting of subtitles now adjusts the time proportional to the length of the substrings.
Added an option to only show those subtitles that contain some kind of problem (either duration, which uses blue backgrounds, or length). Both of these errors will use red font for text.
Set prefered IFO colours in Settings.xml file (no option to specify them from the menu yet).
Added the option to drag and drop subtitle files in the listview (press SHIFT for replacing the current file, press CTRL for adding the dragged file, and if you don't use any modifier, it will use the state of the Join subtitles item in the Files menu).
Added shortcut F2, which will edit the currently selected subtitle (F2 for text, CTRL-F2 for start time, ALT-F2 for end time).
After loading a second subtitle, you now have the option to set its delay to the duration of an AVI file (by opening the AVI file).
Included an uninstaller for the application.
Added an (optional) warning for subtitle (duration/length) errors before converting it to a SUP file.
Set the listview's tooltip to display the selected subtitles warning message (too long length or too short duration).

Bug fixes:

Renaming of menus, moving options around, based on feedback from CoNS. Reduced the text in the DVD wizard, added tooltips, added a no button to the Delete profile message, and many more...
Fixed bug reported by Ukendt after changing to NTSC and saving settings

Todo (next on my list):

Fix bug with insert shortcut (of Music symbol)
Check Heithcliff's contribution (better anti-flicker)
Vertical subtitles (will ask help of requesters to test, as I don't have Japanese or Korean installed)


@ghy: Vertical subtitles, hmmm, that isn't possible so far and it will be difficult to test, as I don't have a vertical font installed. Let me think about it...

@nabe3net: About translating it to Japanese (localization) of SC - I have looked at the way to do it, but as I didn't include it from the start, it will mean a lot of changes. As long as the GUI is still changing a lot, I prefer to wait a bit longer. Of course, if you have a C# compiler available, you would only have to download the current version from the CVS (or send me a pm), and you can create a Japanese version yourself.

@abyss: That encoding problem that you've mentioned seems to be resolved in my new release. At least, as far as I could test it. I used to have my regional language set to Romanian (so the fonts have been installed). In the newest version (1.9.0), this is no longer necessary - in the formatting menu, you can switch the encoding font. I've included some common enodings as specified by windows, and if you have the fonts installed, it should work (you can add other encodings via the Settings.xml file).

Is there any plans to add some sort of automated "scaling compensation" when saving subtitles for different tv modes, widescreen, pan&scan and letterboxed?

Example. Ive got subtitles aligned for widescreen (16:9), which also will have letterboxed subtitles, and these will be stretched depending whether its widescreen or in letterboxed.

Roughly for widescreen i need to manually stretch the subtitles about -0.25 (x-axis) so that when displayed on widescreen the subtitle will be stretched to the correct look ive chosen in SC. As for Letterboxed, i have to decrease the y-axis stretch by about -0.13 to compensate the scaling. Ive not been able to test pan&scan yet.

@Mystiqq The simplest way of doing it currently is to create two separate profiles for both situations, and save them one by one for each profile (so profile 1 with x+0.25 and profile 2 with y-0.13: select between them and save the SUP would do it - second time, you would need to change the output name though). But you are probably suggesting to automate this, so you would save the 2 SUPs automatically? BTW, can you tell me why you need to do this: I mean, the movie is either widescreen, or letterbox, or PS, so why do you need to have both types available?

Ive been doing menu stuff lately and they have the same issues regarding subpics (menu highlights). The movie might be widescreen but like the current title im reauthoring has both widescreen and letterbox modes for subtitles. In muxman you can choose the type of the subpic (wide, pan&scan or letterbox). I mean when you play the movie on a 4:3 tv (mode) its using letterbox and on 16:9 widescreen mode its using the widescreen subtitles. Obviously if you only have letterbox or widescreen subtitles the subtitles will be shown correctly on one or the other.

Again, im no expert and im not sure if these corrections apply to all the other "formats" other than 16:9, such as what you have listed in the "background picture format" menu. Personally ive not understood the useability of those background pictures, since they dont seem to reflect how the subtitles will be positioned when shown in actual dvd player.

Im not sure if this needs to be automated but to me it looks like it would be nice to be able to make subtitles with ease without thinking about all these possible stretching etc. Something like "What you see is what you get" thing.

Mainly i want to point out this stretching factor and perhaps someone with more experience on DVD authoring than me would be able to share some insight into this. I like SC a lot so thats not the problem but im trying to help to make it even better if possible. Thanks! :)

Not really that. It would be nice to have it correct the stretching because the how much they need to be corrected depends on if its PAL or NTSC and picture format. I could make separate profiles, i think, for every situation but i think since these are essential for DVDs anyways they could be automated(?)

Actually, ive got the widescreen value wrong.

So by decreasing x-axis stretch by about 0.19 should do the trick.

and for letterbox (y-axis). Man, my math skills sucks. :)
Oh and these values are for NTSC.

Does changing the video format (PAL/NTSC) do anything in SC? Because i dont really understand the point of that option, other than that it saves the sups in correct size. I might be just too dumb to understand. :)

I mean how do i use these options in useful way? mainly the combination of the video format and the background picture stuff. For example, how did you line up the widescreen default profile? Did you just do trial & error or did you use those background options to do it?

Hello everyone,

I'm posting here after following the pdf guide "Adding subtitles to a DVD", included with Subtitle Creator.
I follow all steps to the letter and use PGC demux (not VobEdit) + ReJig instead of IfOEdit.
The authored dvd from Rejig (without the menus) works just fine, with all original subtitles plus the one I added. But when I try to use Vobblanker (step 7 in the pdf guide), in order to keep the original menus, the final dvd works fine but the new subtitles are gone. I used various versions of Vobblanker (including 1.6.0.3) but to no avail, and spent the whole bloody day trying to figure this out before posting.
Can anyone please help me out...? :thanks:

Use the newest version of VobBlanker, which is v2.0.1.0 (see this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=100213) thread).

In the Replace PGC function, check the option to copy audio/subs tables and status, and you're all set to go!

Depending on which IFO colour palette you used for the subtitles, you also may want to check the new option to copy color palette when replacing PGC in VobBlanker.

There is a basic CLI, but that's probably not what you want: at the moment, it only opens the text file that you specify, and the next version includes a /u option to uninstall. The easiest way for me is to use one of the existing profiles to convert something to a SUP, e.g.

SC input.srt output.sup (uses default profile)

SC input.srt output.sup -p2 (uses profile 2)

SC input.srt output.sup -x70 -y450 -l2 -f"Arial" (uses two lines)

Can you tell me what you had in mind with a CLI, so we can define a useful set of commands (and it helps me determine how much importance/effort I should put into it)?

ATM I have SubtitleCreator opening the srt at the commandline and after that it's auto-it's send keys, which I *hate*, and there's that "congratulations" box to contend with.

My opinion on CLI is that you should have a comprehensive profile file, which can then be specified. Something like SC input.srt output.sup -p[profile-filename]. I'd hope that's easier for you than building in lots of commands into the cli, and also allows for a lot of flexibility for the user.

BTW do you drink cafe latte? :D

hello, i wonder if you guys can help me... I reauthored a PAL DVD and reduced it's resolution to 600 x 480 and now the subtitles I added to the DVD look fuzzy (probably because subtitle creator only has the standard 720 X 576 for PAL). What could I possibly do to fix this? Thanks...

Has the standard synchronize menu been disabled with version 1.9?

I loaded a movie with no subtitles and tried the method outlined in the Subtitle Creator user guide .pdf and the standard menu, third menu,is grayed out.

How do I enable this "third menu using the Subtitle Creator DVD player to synchronize the subtitles?

I have just released Version 1.9.1 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/subtitlecreator/).

New features include:

Included Heathcliff's anti-flicker filter, which should be able to give a better contrast on normal televisions, especially for larger fonts. Additionally, it displays Persian fonts' ligatures correctly. It's not used by default yet, but you can enable it using the Formatting menu (and if you save the settings, your preference will be saved too).
Added link in Help menu to nabe3net's Japanese version of SC including a guide in Japanese.
[On request] Support for vertical fonts (vertical display, right to left), see profile 4 for an example of a Japanese font

Created a form to manage the profiles.
Implemented A-B repeat to create subtitles for DVDs without any existing subtitles: in case you don't have any subtitles, and are willing to create them from scratch, you can start a new file (CTRL-N) and open the DVD. While it plays, you can press the A-B button to mark the beginning (first press, or CTRL-A) and end (second press) of the new subtitle, and the DVD will keep repeating between these two points untill you press it for a third time. Because there will be a typical delay between your key press and the start and end times you want for the subtitles, you can specify these delays in the Settimgs.xml file. Didn't really have time to test it well, so would appreciate comments.
Changing the background picture now keeps the background black: the idea is that after reading the IFO, the format should be set correctly (if the screenshot didn't do the translation for you already, which happens for example with WinDVD, in which case you should use 1:1 format).
