Hi,

When saving a subtitle file, SubRip proposes a default name based on the name of VOB file and on the language (vts_01_0.English.srt for example).

But, when there are some non ANSI characters (UNICODE), the default name is always NewFile.srt.

Regards.

By the way, i think it would be good to remind you that current SubRip developer is ai4spam, and that ai4spam is busy, and will be busy indefinitely long. While i am just fixing all kind of mess i created by starting this "TTXT format export" feature in SubRip, and i will not touch anything else in SubRip.
Do not be afflicted if your feature requests/bug reports will not be satisfied for a...year? Two years?

Looks like some sort of...i don't know...bug? I mean, subtitles are fine, and SubRip analyzes them fine (no corruption at that stage), but shows them wrong. And there's a strange corruption in top-left corner.
Try SubRip v1.50b4c. I can't give you any other counsel than that...

I got the old 1.40b3 from a backup dvd i had and there the subs are shown just fine.
Gonna download a previous version from current one later on.

Turning OFF both "Use VOB's subtitle map" & "Use IDX's file offsets" worked !!!

But only after I erased the SubRip.ini file from SubRip home directory [alike starting from a scrath new install ]

Very strange .... but at least it works now !
Thanks 'ai4spam' !

Turning off both those options seems to work here also

I have this problem:
the character matrix seems to make mistakes with n't.

This is what I get a lot of the time:
arert doesert hadrt hasrt strt wasrt won'th(worth).

I cannot find anything in the matix that would cause this. I keep deleting all characters involved but the problem keeps coming up.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

just tried 1.5 to do my first dvd conversion.

very cool man....

only thing i found. nero recode 3 does not like the .srt files from it.
not sure if it is a recode problem or subrip problem.

question, which is better and why .srt or .ttxt?

thanks

Nero Recode suxxors. At least Nero Recode 2. I don't know, maybe they fixed all bugs in 3rd version, but i doubt it.
SRT is a native SubRip subtitles format. It was developed along with initial SubRip versions, afaik. Thus when it comes to 'is this srt file of proper format?' you should look at SubRip's output - this is the real thing, not something Nero Recode thinks it should be. Well, there MAY be some kind of bug in 1.5 srt output, but not likely.
TTXT is an implementation (by GPAC project) of 3GPP Timed Text format. Or, to be precise, it is a temporary format that is used to feed Timed Text into MP4Box (part of GPAC toolset), where it is transformed to real (binary) Timed Text (as a side effect, you cannot demux Timed Text from mp4 - well, you can, but it will be in binary form, which is pretty useless at the moment).
It is possible to transform subtitles from TTXT to SRT (only theoretically, there is no tool for that afaik) and back (MP4Box does that), but SOME information that HAS to be stored in TTXT, cannot be stored in SRT and may only be obtained from DVD. Thus if you are going to mux subtitles into mp4 container via mp4box, you may consider using TTXT from the very beginning. It is not always simple - a few things may be necessary to be done with TTXT file after you rip subtitles into it, like time shift, textbox resize, split; i created a few tools for that, but they are buggy and lame. And TTXT subtitles support is not the most widespread feature around.
If you don't know anything about mp4 or mp4box, they you should stick to SRT.

LRN, thanks for the info.

I got to the problem with my test srt file.
For some reason the file had a double entry with the second entry starting and the end point of the first entry.

This did not exist on the original vobsub but once removed, the srt file imported into recode 3 fine.

There seems to be another issue with encoding srt in the container and showtime, but that does not seem to be relevant here.

cheers

Double entries happen. It's a feature, not a bug :)

Can anyone tell me why I always have the same problems ?

I'm using SubRip 1.50 beta4, my main subtitle language is Dutch/Nederlands. For all of my movies subrip always misdetects small L (l) and big I (I), so most dutch words like "Ik", "In", "Is" etc... are being misdetected ?

I can't save a custom matrix because SubRip doesn't detect them anyway, Allthough it does show the "What Is" dialog the first time it encounters a small L (l), when it continues, it reads them wrong again.

Also for words ending with "l" or "r" subrip doesn't even detect the space following them, resulting in a complete faulty .SRT file.

LRN
25th January 2008, 08:38
small L ("l") and big I ("I") confusion happens because it is not possible to distinguish between these two without knowing the context. SubRip does not knows anything about context, so it confuses them. All the time. To solve this, use i-l independent font to display subtitles. Words will be wrong, but since you can't see the difference between "I" and "l", it does not matters :)
About space detection - try to adjust OCR settings.

Hoping someone can help (tried search but nothing relevant came up). I'm having problems saving the text that subrip creates.

By that I mean, it does it's thing, I can see all the ripped subs there, but when trying to save - nothing happens. I dont get this fault for everything i try to rip.

E.g. i'm trying to rip my DBZ movie DVD's and I do one - works fine. move on to the next - alls fine till the end.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/9539/save1yz5.jpg

i click save and instead of a 'save as' popup, i just stay with the 'subtitles window and instead of the 'save' button I have 2 checkboxes

http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/1920/save2bf5.jpg

F - format the subtitle text
V - auto scroll down to show the last subtitles

started from scratch but same thing happens. Always on same movies too.Cant even ctrl+a to select text and copy it myself to notepad or something :( I have no idea why it freaks on some movies.

My workaround for the striped subtitles bug was to rename the .idx file and use only the .sub file => OCR works, but the lines are invisible in the preview (only current character is visible) and I have to restart Subrip for each subtitle stream, or else the timecode offset will get bigger and bigger. So not really a solution. I hope b4c works.

Those links to the current builds http://lrn.no-ip.info/home/subrip/ are really hard to find. They should be on page 1 of this thread and on the "Useful Software" page (still points to v1.30!). Not to mention the About in Subrip itself, it only points to zuggy's website and to two dead sites.

@bmnot,

I had an idea regarding your problem. Maybe you can try to open your sub (without idx) with SubtitleCreator and save it as VobSub. It should recreate and idx file that may work better?

Is this project still alive and kicking for Windows? There hasn't been any updates in over a year or so. I am using 1.50b4 and it has lots of buggs (such as, creating spaces when it's not supposed to be a space) and mistaking I for l, etc.

Just adjust the time on your subtitles so they are sync'ed and move on with your life. What happened was somewhere along the line an offset that was in your original DVD was removed during a recode.

Why? Who knows... Just because someone builds DVDs for a living doesn't mean that he is an expert, or even competent to do so. Many DVDs are put together so badly as to question the competence of the "compiler".

I found out that the problem I had with wsn't becoming wasrt and worth becoming won'th was because of the OCR correction.

If you uncheck the three boxes at the bottom (in fromt of the english_screwed box that is at the bottom right) this won't happen. It'll only change the l to I where appropriate.

subrip works fine ...except ....

Why is it it messes up the timings of my perfectly synched .srt file !?? The times are moved by like -00:00:00:70 hours when i import the file to begin whit!!

And to make things wurse, i cant seem to fix it using speed modifications !!

When i try and remove/add 700 ms to EACH and EVERY subtitle it actualy adds much more +ms or allot less -ms but NEVER the exact vallue !!???

As a result the subs show too late or either to earlie in my re-autherd movie !!!!

Wot can be done about this folks!!!

What is the output format set to in SubRip?
It doesn't mess up the timings. It is probably converting it to a different format and you are misinterpreting the converted timings.
It can convert to quite a few formats. Some are time based, some are frame based.

I hate to say it , but it does mess up the timings!! At least it sure does looks like it afterwards when watching my compiled / reauthored dvd!!

The format i try to convert into is either .SON or .STL both and only format (me thinks) dvd maestro can handle !!

And the only thing i can do about is, is to make sure i add an Delay of prox -700 ms everytime i use subrip picrade!!

I fail to see why it doesnt mess up timings to you, when infact the subs either show up to late (most of the time) or to early using subripped converted subs !?

I have the same issue , whit either demuxed subs directly from the dvd source using subrip or using OCR ripped subs through subrip!

edit: Let say its because 1 format is time based and another is frame based!!
The srt sub i try to convert is timed correctly and is already converted to the correct same frame rate the movie has before i even use subrip!?

And still, the timings are horrible OFFSET after using subrip!!!

I always need to RESYNCH them damn!!

Well, all I can say is that I have used SubRip at least 100 times and never had any synch problem.
I use Maestro as authoring tool and extract bitmaps directly from DVD (.son format). I rarely use .srt or the OCR.

Not seeing exactly what you are doing it is difficult to say what the problem is.

Is that delay of 700ms the same in every DVD you reauthor?
Are they PAL or NTSC format? (Mine is NTSC)
Give the title of a few movies you have this trouble with.
Post the timings of the first and last subtitles from the .son file when you extract directly from the DVD.
Open the DVD in DVDSubEdit, full domain, and post the timings of the first and last subs from the same stream as in the .son file.

I don't know if anyone will be interested but I am rewriting and refactoring SubRip into C# with an end goal of having it be able to run on Mono. I'll hopefully have something up and running in a few weeks but I can't make any guarantees as, like ai4spam has said previously, the current code base for SubRip is a big mess.

Thats very VerRY hard to believe, not to say complete nonesens!

Not seeing exactly what you are doing it is difficult to say what the problem is.

Wot iam doing is probebly just the same as you woud do to get the subs!! Meaning , either using OCR (save to text) or Demux (save as bmp/sup) !! NOt many options left are there !!
I read emm strait from my hard drive (video_ts) folder !!

Is that delay of 700ms the same in every DVD you reauthor?

Not always that amount of time no... And it happends BOTH whit PAL and NTSC sources!!!
Its realy strange how i most of the time A+L+W+A+Y+S need to RE-Synch them after ripped the original subs to keep them playing in synch whit the movie through MPC6. And when i need and convert them to .stl format ( meastro) ill need to synchronize them again by adding delay's through time correction !!!!!!!?

Give the title of a few movies you have this trouble with.
Post the timings of the first and last subtitles from the .son file when you extract directly from the DVD.
Open the DVD in DVDSubEdit, full domain, and post the timings of the first and last subs from the same stream as in the .son file.

I dont have a direct stream, as its uselless to import them in meastro because of the synch problem you know!! But i can give you an comparison of .srt ripped subs yes..

And SubEdit somehow suffers the same fate !! I need submagic to re-synch them almost everytime!!

For wot its worth ill give you an fresh ripped english stream from the movie " Journey to the center of the earth 2008". This stream needed to be synchronized aswell by removing ALMOST A WHOLE MINUTE :eek:

This is orginal ripped untouched sub (not playing in synch)

Start time:

00:01:58,383 --> 00:02:00,551
Trevor!

End time:
01:26:49,216 --> 01:26:50,817
Come on.

And now the timings from an perfectly good re-synched subtitle:

Start time:
00:01:08,983 --> 00:01:11,151
Trevor.

End Time:
01:25:59,816 --> 01:26:01,816
Come on.

Now, iam not sure wots going on here !! But DVdSubedit shows the first line (star time) of the ripped sub in question at 00:01:07 !!!

But once i save it to a file and re-open the sub instead of 1:07 minute it shows 1:58 minutes !!!!?

So, theres something realy WEIRD going on there !!!

Still not fixed whit the latest release of subedit 1.5 !!

That's a bit of an understatement ;). Good luck re-coding. I suggest you start by using some C source from guliverkli: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/. That will give you C code that reads and writes .idx/.sub files properly (VSRip http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84442), and even does OCR (SubResync). Obviously a lot of things will still be missing, but it's a start.

To everyone else: sorry for the lack of updates, I have too much going on in my life right now and no time to deal with this mess. I have a more advanced beta version that I use, with character matrix synthesis and rudimentary/incomplete support for external OCR engines, but it's too buggy to release and I haven't touched the code in months. If anyone wants to try their luck at it, email me.

Where are the actually source files for VSRip? All that it has on the site is the compiled dll.

Hehe well if the current pace of work continues it may either be close to the end of the year or early next year before I get a working test build done. Not only is the source difficult at times to work but it's been something of a big learning curve in figuring out what exactly is happening, as I've never done any work with subtitles before, to make sure that none of the functionality gets broken as I translate it over. This is making my progress a bit slower than I expected, but as soon as I have something ready that people can use I will post it. I will try to keep people informed on my progress as it goes along.

Well, the general recommendation is to try "Change text color" and select ONLY the text, without outlines.
In your situation, it may be the case that the text color just happens to LOOK the same as the background, but recognition works anyway.

I have exactly the same problem with almost all vobsub files. I have to convert all my encodes with vobsub files to srt, because WD TV Player does not accept picture based subtitle files. :(
