I have the delete char problem too. But I have found that when the error dialog is open, you can tell Windows to log off and SubRip will then give you the option to save the Char Map without the pesky error dialogs blocking you. It's makes for slow and tedious work but it's better than having to force quit SubRip and lose all the unsaved entries in the character matrix.

Wow, that's some detective work ;).

The news is that I really don't have any time to further develop SubRip right now. I'll be uploading a stable version of my latest beta. I'll try to fix all the bugs signalled here before I do. It's been a good ride while it lasted, and I hope someone else will pick up the torch and carry it on.

I'm using 1.50b3a, and I get some weird things happening. I'm encoding Fullmetal Alchemist, and on episode 41 the save dialog does not show up. For all the previous episodes this worked, but not ep 41... I re-processed episode 40, which still worked perfectly, so there seems to be something odd going on with the input files.

I tried compatibility mode, but it doesn't help. It seems to be dependent on the input file. Has this problem been figured out yet?

Nope. :( I tried putting it in a different directory, and then renaming the files themselves, but it still doesn't work.

I just got done encoding some more episodes, and it looks like all the eps on one DVD (41,42,43,44) fail to show the save dialog. The other DVDs are OK.

I'm using it on Windows XP x64, if that matters.

I and l are very similar (or equal) in many subtitles. The only workaround is to apply "post-OCR" correction after the sub-rip process.

Best workaround is to hardcode font name into subtitles (not all formats support this feature), Arial for example (in Arial I and l are the same)

It may indeed get too bloated, try to download it again, and next time you save it, choose a different name so that you can revert to the previous one.
I'll probably have time for an update over winter break, during which all the bugs will hopefully be taken care of.

Hmm, I have a large avi file with hard-coded subtitles, I have tried both SubRip and AVISub Detector and both seem to run the length of the clip and pick up nothing no matter what settings I alter.

Is there some software out there that I can use to create the timing and just manually enter the text? Does Subtitle Workshop do this?

If the Hard-Coded subtitles are bit-mapped, then
'Subtitle Workshop' doesn't work with bit-mapped characters.

SubRip does not have automatic detection like AviSubDetector, you have to go to the first subtitle and set the subtitle and outline colors manually before it can go on. You can also try PodPis instead, and use the timings it gives you to translate, if you're doing a translation.

Yes, that's the Spanish inverted exclamation sign. If you never rip Spanish subtitles, go to the Edit Char Matrix window, sort it by character, and delete all the inverted exclamation signs.
Alternatively, just open the file in NotePad and do a replace all from ¡ to i (to find the ¡ character, type Alt+0161).

It happens to everyone, maybe just the subtitles you rip are weirder. You can try setting the OCR sensitivity all the way to 1000.

How longs does it take to rip a 25mins episode (1VOB) from 1 DVD i've done mines for a min or 2 its stuck at 95% and no subs are showing in the subtitle window. its not hard subbed am ripping it from the VOB i can't see whats doing wrong can anyone help me maybe configure the settings or whatever. Also, it appears that "Use IDX file offset" in Global Options is set by default in the latest beta. Uncheck it if you get weird looking characters.

Don't know if this will help, and you may have already tried it, but in Bsplayer (I'm using an old 1.39 build, but should be the same on yours), right-click on the movie, then Subtitle> Subtitle Properties> Font> Script and pick from the choices available (I've got 9 showing; "Central European" would probably be your best bet; mine's on "Western"). Then click on "Apply", and restart your video.

I'm in the U.S. and don't have any subs like yours to test, so I have no idea if this will work.

Try this trick:

Open the subtitle in notepad. From the menu, choose "Save As", and in the "Encoding" box, choose ANSI.

This has worked in the past for me, when other programs couldn't read SubRip's Unicode.

CP 1250 should work just fine for Romanian, if you set the right characters in the first place (if you used the characters in the table that appears when it asks you for a new char).
As a rule of thumb, you should receive no error message on conversion, and the diacritics should look right after changing the CP. If you get an error message, it's probably the wrong CP.

You don't render the underscores on the buttons ("Skip this subpicture" etc). I have to use a shortcut (alt p) before they show up (this is in english)


Also the "change text color" window doesn't adjust the height of the window correctly if the system is set to large dpi font setting (to be able to read it) *, then you can't see the buttons you have to click, they are outside the window (hidden)

I want use subrip 1.50 beta4 to get son file from single sub file (vobsub format sub file without the idx file),but the son file i got couldn't be converted into vobsub with son2vobsub. I had done the same work before by using the old verison(1.20) subrip and same version son2vobsub.

Everyone knows that my TTXT ripping implementation in SubRip is buggy and incomplete. Well, yesterday i grew tired of it, downloaded 1.50b4 and fixed everything.
Now SubRip outputs better TTXT subtitles than mp4box (mp4box.exe -ttxt <file.srt>) itself, including full position info support (<TextBox>) and full color support. Give it a try!
I hope this will be my last Subrip 1.xx release. And if you find any bugs in my code - report here (my code is marked by comments, you won't miss it).

Since there is no (or i don't know any) subtitle editors with TTXT support, i wrote two small commandline applications.
TTXT_timeshift, shifts time.
TTXT_slice cuts subtitle file to pieces. It is compatible with AviSynth function Trim().

Very minor update.
New option - to replace <'> (single quote) character with <&apos;> or <`>. <`> is a bit ugly, but safe. <&apos;> is better, but some versions of MP4box may not recognize it (actually, they do - but only before splitting text into lines, resulting in messed linebreaks). Latest version of MP4box (Celtic Druid's build of 0.4.5-DEV) works fine with <&apos;>, so this option is now enabled in SubRip by default.
Now SubRip will always replace <''> (two single quotes) with <"> (double quote), because even if escaped as <&apos;&apos;>, two consecutive single quotes will be recognized as line seprartor.
New default font for TTXT subtitles - Arial Unicode MS. Now you could use any symbols (notes, special characters and all kind of international symbols) without having to change a font. Size is now 22, because 14 is just too small (remember, we're not in plaintext mode anymore!). I don't know what Unicode fonts are common on *nix machines, but i hope they know how to obtain some extra fonts :) It's pity we can't embed fonts into mp4 container...Can't we?

Hey guys. Im a newbie with subrip and this must be an answered question maybe but I couldn't find it anywhere. Anyway, when I finish the first line of my subtitle I keep getting this error:
Instead of "justice" I get "jus tice". And every word with the letter "t" gets me the same error. How can I correct this?

Use post-ocr correction (around the same menu where you save the subtitles at the end) with English language. Or you could make a simple replacement in any text editor: " t"->"t".
Or you could try to tweak OCR machine settings to be less sensitive to intervals between characters. I'm not sure there is an option for such thing though...

Thanks, I did what you said and the problem was solved. In "Advanced Ocr Setup" I increased the "Space Width Setup" and that was it. But I have a problem with the "l" and the "i". Instead of "i", the program thinks its a "l". Any sugestion to correct this?

Had the same issue. You could try to make OCR less tolerant to character differences (big slider in Advanced OCR setup, with a range of 0..1000).

By the way, here's an update for TTXT Tools - fixes a bug with string length, like <... text="blah-blah,''blah-lah'HH">. I'm not sure how MP4box reacts on such broken (two H after lineend) strings, but it couldn't be good.

Now, my next idea is to make a feature like "drop shadow". It is perfectly possible with TTXT - i could just double every sub-title with different color and slightly adjusted position and place them into different layer. It's only one thing that bothers me: should i include this functionality into SubRip, or make a new TTXT Tool for it. Or don't do it and just leave SubRip alone? :)

After you rip all the subtitles to text, click on the "Use to Correct some Wrong Characters" button (green color) on the lower toolbar. Make sure you select the correct language, and select the "English Screwed" from the drop-down box.

A computer isn't able to sort out the differences between capital i and lowercase l because they don't exist in many fonts - they are physically identical. That would require a complex knowledge of the language (English in this case). Because of that, many programs that deal with subtitles have this "post OCR correction". Look it up and try to use it in SubRip, Subtitle Workshop and others...

Fixed major TTXT color bug. I wonder why noone reported it :( . This bug causes first text line to be custom (not DVD native) color (white by default) even if "use native DVD color" option is enabled.
Also i changed versionstr, now window title and about dialog shows proper "1.50 beta 4c" version string.
New TTXT Tools version features new tool - TTXT_resize. Allows you to change positioning info. If you resize original DVD image (you're making RIP with reduced resolution or it's just anamorthic and requires vertical resize), subtitle positions will not fit (i tried to RIP anamorphic video, and height change from 576 to 400 was enough for subtitles to disappear completely). Resizes horizontally and vertically by percentage. Could round floating point numbers up or down (down is default; maybe i'll change that later, for my first use of this tool i had to use up-rounding). Could resize textboxes or just move them (default). Resizing textboxes could cause some subtitles to be crop'ed if you didn't changed font size too (TTXT_resize does not changes font size; i thought about this feature though).
Fixed bug with escape sequences (sometimes some tools did not used escapes).
All TTXT tools now support '-' instead of filename to read/write from/to stdin/stdout. Pretty useless - i tried to write another tool for mass-processing (whould have use findfirst/next/close, spawnv and child process stdout redirect) and failed.
