Actually world isn't so easy.
There will be something like two decades crt's around this planet and it has been esimated that crt's will go to minority somewhere around 2013.
In US they are still selling "hdtv"-crt's and there will be millions of them after a decade or so.

Meanwhile there is a lot of artistic trouble for moviemakers how to frame their shots in a way that it would show as near as possible the intended compostition.

AFAIK there has been no global or regional agreements about overscan (if any) areas in hd...

A few weeks ago I generated a couple of high-def test cards (1No 1280x720 and 1No 1920x1080) and asked some Buffalo LinkTheater and I-O DATA LinkPlayer owners to test them for over-scan with their display devices.

The results were quite alarming!

When the source images are viewed without over-scan, they should look like this: -

With the 1280x720 encode, around 150 pixels (75 left + 75 right) are lost to over-scan. And with the the 1920x1080 encode, around 230 pixels (115 left + 115 right) are lost to over-scan... And look how much is lost vertically

Where do you get these figures from? I work in product management in a very large IT reseller, and I beleive we started selling more LCD than CRT some months ago. I'd be willing to wager that in 12 months or less, TV sales will see the same thing.

Futher, while TV's lasted a long time when the biggest feature improvement was colour, they're not going to last anywhere near as long when we're seeing features including increased viewable image, decreased size, vastly increased quality and the begining of interactivity.

Well, we're living in a world where 90% of people's one months salary is smaller than price for any kinf of flat screen.

I remember that average life of tv is 15 years, although this might come down a bit as quality gets worse and prices lowers, but majority of tv's in this planet will be crt's even in 2020!

I really don't see how interactivity decreases the need for overscan.

With DTV there shouldn't be. Part of the requirements of building a good TV should be little or no overscan as the size of a digital picture is specifically dictated.

Majority of people's footage in vhs, dvd, miniDV, analog broadcast and sd-dtv will be something that is intended to be watched with overscan.
So without overscan, you might see a lot of disturbance near pictures borders or you are just seeing different composition than the content makers intended.
And lots of this old material will be also watched from new fancy flat hdtv's...

Agreed. Many people like to think that SDTVs will be quickly replaced by larger and flatter HDTVs, but this is only true at the high end of the market. Most people will still be using old 20"-32" TVs for many, many years. Even I still have a ~12-15 year old 20" SDTV for casual use--but I also use a 100" DLP front projector every day, too. :sly:

no way, this ain't hardware related, when i turn off audio encoding, video encodes fine, but only sometimes when i encode both audio and video, windows gives error, saying that nero recode 2 has an error and will be closed, when i go to details, it shows the file aacenc32.dll, that proves it is not a hardware problem! and this does not happens all the time, only sometimes!This is not a hardware problem!Period.:devil:

well.. software problems are usually caused by faulty hardware. and since it appears you have problems with other softwares that were proven to be stable, maybe you need to check your hardware more deeply.
Try a new and bigger wattage PSU, in my case it fixed a lot of crashes i had on one of my PCs.

Any chance that someone from Nero can address some of the features that have been requesting here and if/when we can expect them to be implemented or refused?

On my list, the ability to pause an encode and be able to close down the program and then come back later and continue it so i can free up my system for other tasks instead of having to wait through a 16 hour encode. Another is the ability to stitch together multiple files and have them output to one file. Another is more control over the target bit rate without having to use the slider or arrow keys on the keyboard. Last one for me, the ability to disable auto resize to all files on the list or the ability to apply a resolution to all files without having to manually go to the video tab and change each file's resolution.

Thank you and I am sure others will repeat the features that are sorely lacking in an otherwise excellent product.

Hi,
got a different kind of problem and couldn't really find a topic on it. Hope I didn't oversee something obivous...
I've been trying to redo some DVDs, which means that I want to add some titles of different DVDs onto one.
I got all the titles into Nero Recode, selected language and subtitles, but when I play the files it created in ShowTime I can't skip to the next track/title, only FF.
What did I do wrong?
Is there a better way (software) do do this?
I don't need (want) menu screens, just the video.

i have run into a small problem, i have some .mp4 files encoded using nero recode 2 with aac audio/avc video and subtitles, all made using recode 2! the files play fine in nero showtime, but when i try to play them in zoom player or media player classic, it gives an error in "Graphedt.exe", when i see more details , it says "ntdll.dll" has an error!and the player crashes, i am using vsfilter 2.36+haali media splitter latest version, what seems to be the problem, can anyone help me with this?

For about 3 months that i started backing up my DVDs collection to Nero Digital format. Thanks for the nice suite of applications, and for the support on this forum too..

About me problem:
I use my TV to see my movies, and i do this by putting my ATi Overlay Control Panel switched to 'Home Theater'. This makes the output on the TV Out fullscreen when video is beeing played.
The thing with ShowTime is that the subtitles are displayed only on the normal display, the TV Out (Overlay) only has the video (in full screen), subtitles are missing....
I think ShowTime is not drawing subtitles to the overlay surface.. Could this be the case? Could this be quickfixed?

I would have as well a request to the improvement of Nero recode. Take Matrix revolutions and take the scene with the oracle in minute 5 and 6. The old lady is sitting in front of a green wall. If you put the scene through Nero digital, the green wall starts to live its own life with significant artifacts, no matter how much bandwith or quality options you choose. Once I saw that, I stepped away from my plan to build an archive with Nero digital as the loss is more than I want.

multiblitz: It's funny you say that just with Matrix Revolutions! I've encoded that movie using Nero Recode 2 with Cinema - AVC 2 Pass Profile, its more than ok for a 1400Mb file! :)

When i tried the first times to watch the movie, i thought the whole encoding was a waste! In Nero ShowTime the movie is like black & white with artefacts (from previous pictures) sorte of moving on screen, the whole movie... But... When i opened with ffdshow video decoder the movie is ok except in the first seconds and the credits text where great blocks appear around text...
Is this a ShowTime (and to a lesser degree, a ffdshow) bug? Or is the file wrong in some way?

Upgraded from NVE-3.1.0.11 (Recode 2.2.6.16) to NVE-3.1.0.16 (2.2.6.17b) and this started happening:

Nero filters ("old" 2.2.6.16 or "new" 2.2.6.17b) will not properly play back AVCs encoded by the new version (2.2.6.17b) when rendering to VMR9 on my machine. It seems only to be broken when encoded by the new version and played back by nero filters through VMR9. FFDshow will play the otherwise broken streams correctly.

The symptom is this: It looks like the chroma planes are offset down by maybe 16 pixels, with the top portion of the display becoming dreaded green artifacts.

By reverting back to 2.2.6.16, new encodes (with 2.2.6.16) will play correctly. Encodes done with the 2.2.6.17b still will not play correctly on 2.2.6.16.

Here's the complete table of my experiments:
