OT: Anybody ever used pivot tables in Excel before?
The company I work for live off them - they're genious (Pivot Tables, not the company).
Whenever you hear *Bang-Bang*Bang-Bang*Bang-Bang* running for 30 seconds, you know someone's doing a pivot table and trying to use only select fields. Excel makes you manually select/deselect each field, so you do a really fast <space> <down arrow> combination that sounds like a machine gun.
It's very funny : )

has the low volume in encoded movies bug been fixed yet?

Converting AC3 to AAC audio should result in low volume. It's not a bug.
AC3 has a highly extended dynamic range, and then implements Dialogue Normalisation and DRC to play back this huge dynamic range in environments (such as the home) where that range is not supported or desirable.
AAC does none of these things.
Either Recode needs to support DRC, Dialogue Normalisation and Peak Normalisation (not a bug, just missing features), or you need to decode your audio using proper software first and then frame serve it to Recode (only the previous version of recode had a multichannel bug I hope has been fixed).

Also, has anyone else noticed:
The Nero Digital shell item property page makes the properties dialogue be oversized, with a chunk of grey nothingness off on the bottom and right?
Is Ahead/Nero aware of this?

@LiFe
That's true, but may I rephrase the concern a bit? As I understand it, the AC3->AAC output from recode is "excessively" low, even when one considers the factors present in the conversion.
For example, I've just produced a 1kHz -1dBFS test tone. On a 105dB mix, this should play at 104dB in a calibrated theater. In other words, this is as loud as it gets. Movies don't really get this loud. Dialogue typically peaks at -27dBFS.
From this test tone I've produced several files, a few of which are:
1. A calibrated AC3 without dialogue normaliztion (-31dB = "no correction")
2. An M4A using BSN with no dialogue norm or DRC. Therefore 0dBFS in = 0dbFS out.
3. An MP4 using Nero Recode.
I then decoded the two AACs via a common route and measured them. The M4A from BSN shows the same (+/- 0.5dB) levels as the input file. The level of the MP4 from Nero Recode, depending on encoding settings, ranged from -18dBFS to -14dBFS, or about 12-15 dB too quiet!
Of course its easy to speculate as to the reason for this. Perhaps Recode's AC3 decoder's DRC compresses the levels downward instead of upward to centered. Who can say? Whatever the case may be, the result is MP4s with ridiculously low sound levels that are almost impossible to hear on my laptop.

Recode doesn't do this for 2 channel or 5.1 channel wavs does it? I decode all my AC3 with correct Norm, DRC with Azid then frameserve to recode.
And yes, I know about the frameserve 5.1 ch bug.
Thanks.

guys, how do ya "frameserve" ac3 to recode, i mean, i follow the doom9 guide and in there there is no way to include any external audio?
LiFe
26th February 2005, 14:14
You don't.
You decode it to wavs (and if it goes over 2GB you use 6 of them : ), then you use AviSynth to frame serve the MPEG-2 with Audio.

I've downloaded and installed the latest demo version of the Nero Package 2, I also have the updated to the latest Nero 6 Reloaded version.
When I start up Nero Recode 2 I get to the normal start up screen and can choose from 5 options. But no matter on which one I click, I'll get:
Nero Recode 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
AppName: recode.exe AppVer: 2.2.6.11 ModName: nendgui.dll
ModVer: 3.0.0.5 Offset: 00035769
Something seems to have gone wrong. Windows XP SP2, latest updates (except the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1). Maybe my Windows is somehow... not in best condition tho, but I haven't encountered a problem lately (except that the .NET SP1 crashes while updating).
Hope this is the right thread/place to ask :)
Hmm... now Nero ShowTime, after running in background with a DVD (was in the menu) crashed.
AppName: showtime.exe AppVer: 2.0.0.22 ModName: nevideo.ax
ModVer: 3.0.0.5 Offset: 0006eb3b
Strange.
Ps: Yes, my system is overclocked, but no, it ran years with Folding@Home and encoding XviD without a problem.
***edit***
Returned to original fsb and clock speed, still crashes.

I have both new versions installed, and no matter what choice I make in Recode it gives me the exact same error described as above. I am also running SP2 with all the latest updates.

Myabe I am just getting lucky. But whenever I re-install Nero or redo my system, I put my serials in NVE and "NOT" NERO Burning Rom. Everytime I put it into the burning rom I have problems like no Nero Digital in Recode. But when I put the serials in through NVE. about 10-12 times in a row "No issues". You will still see demo in the start menu until you open the burning rom for the first time.

I had similar problem. If you have ffdshow's Raw video decoding support enabled, try disabling it.
I had also intervideo's ivivideo.ax messing with Recode's filter chain, but seems disabling ffdshow's Raw video solved this issue also.

Thanks JohnV,
I performed a search for Intervideo's ivivideo.ax and it would seem I don't have this installed
I install FFdshow a couple of weeks ago when I wanted to test its 6Ch AAC to AC3 transcoder (which worked well), but de-installed it soon after!
I wonder if there are still some remnants of FFdshow clashing with Recode or if some priorities have changed....
Do you have any further suggestions? If it's happening to me, it may be happening to others too!

I have some remarks about NeroShowTime 2.0.0.22 and NeroRecode 2.2.6.11.
About NeroShowTime 2.0.0.22:
1.) I can't set NeroShowTime to "Hide Subtitles". If its set to, the subtitles are still shown. What's wrong?
2.) NeroRecode saves the subs as vobsubs, doesn't it?
Some vobsubs have different colours for different actors, but NeroShowTime shows all subs in greyscale, while other players can show the coloured subs.
3.) NeroRecode terms the audio- and/or subtitletracks like "English - Director's Comment" or "English 5.1". But NeroShowTime just shows "English" (all other players show the full name, but can't switch between the tracks when playing through NDParser/NeroVideoDecoder).
Why the hell can't NeroShowTime support NeroRecode's "cosmetic" features, when its forced to be the only player that handles NeroDigital's full features?
Or do i have to set some hidden settings?
4.) Are there any skins available for NeroShowTime? The two skins shipped with it are very ugly and the buttons aren't arranged really user-friendly.
About NeroRecode 2.2.6.11:
1.) I prefer to do anamorphic encoding with NeroDigital ASP by uncheck the "letterbox"-option. But NeroRecode sets a wrong PAR on my files: it sets a generic 16:9 PAR (64:45) instead of the correct 16:9 PAL-PAR (16:11), although the VOBs are recognised as 16:9 PAL.
Is it possible to fix this?
2.) I sometimes want to have only the second subtitle, cos the first is always enabled in other players than NeroShowTime. But when i set the first subtitle to "None", there is no option to add just a second one. Is it possible to add a "blank" subtitle as first subtitle?
I know these are minor "remarks" or "feature requests", but i hope they can be fixed. Generally the wrong PAR (btw. XviD sets the correct PAR, so i hope NeroDigital will do too ;) )
And i know that mpegmodifier can correct the PAR, but only in avi and i have problems by remuxing the avi in the mp4.
EDIT:
Oops, i now discovered the "Nero recode feature wish list"-thread.
I think i should have added my feature requests (correct PAR, blank subtitle) in that thread...
Sorry ;)

I wasn't intended to start another discussion about it. I only wanted to point on the wrong PAR setting in NeroRecode (look at mpegmodifier: it is set as Custom PAR 64:45, and that is wrong, cos it has to be set as 16:9 PAL PAR to resize properly on PC, or - maybe 64:45 PAR for SAs?)
Hit me when i'm wrong ;)
And when its so misunderstanding, NeroRecode should give the possibility to chose or override the PAR or DAR by hand like XviD does.
Wouldn't it be nice? ;)

When i use NDParser/NeroVideoDecoder i can't select between the different audio or subtitle tracks outside NeroShowTime, but can select the chapters.
When i use another Splitter/Decoder-Combination (like Haali'sSplitter/ffdshow) i can select between the different audio or subtitle tracks outside NeroShowTime, but can't select the chapters.
I prefer the Nero-combination atm, cos chapters are more desired.
When i want to use the full advantages of NeroDigital, i use NeroShowTime.

As I said before. There has been a lot of discussion about this subject before on the forum...
It's quite easy to for people to conduct their own PAR -v- DAR tests. All you have to do is rip a small section from an 16:9 anamorphic DVD (preferably with a 2.35:1 image). Encode it to Mpeg4 at 1:1 (ie: without cropping or resizing). And then use MPEG Modifier to write a file with 16:9 DAR and another file with 16:9 PAR. And then compare the two Mpeg4 files against the Mpeg2 source using the same software media player.
You will find, the DAR encode will exactly match the Mpeg2 source. And the PAR encode will not.

Agreed, it's very annoying that Nero has not fully opened up it's filters for use in other direct-show media players. The guys at NeroDigital are well aware of this!
VLC player allows you to read Nero's subtitles and switch audio tracks but sadly lacks chapter selection also :(
Personally I think it would be kinda cool if MediaPlayer Classic came with it's own "built-in" Mpeg4/.MP4 filters, parsers, splitters etc.

That's right, but PAL-DVDs on PC are played with an incorrect Generic-AR of strictly 16:9 (for example 1024*576) - causing by a missing overscan on the PC monitor - instead the correct PAL-PAR 16:9 (in this example about 1052*576), the resolution DVDs are played on TV. In other words: on PC an AR of 1,78:1 will be used, but the correct one from the ITU and CCIR-Standard (different numbers) is about 1,825:1.
Try with a scene with a moon or another correct round. On the DVD the "ring" will not be a perfect circle, it will be a bit narrowed, when played on PC, but not on a SA.
To solve this, the MP4s had to be resized with 16:9 PAL PAR (16:11) and not with a strict 16:9 DAR of 64:45, otherwise the wrong resolution DVDs use on PC are "stored" in the MP4s, at least when played on PC.
But: I don't know the bahaviour of SAs when handling MP4. Do they resize properly when using DAR or the PAL PAR?
It would be nice if someone could answer this question.
But as you mentioned before, this thread should not end in an other discussion about DAR/PAR.
But a possibillity to chose the PAR/DAR by hand in NeroRecode is almost likely for me ;)

If you burn the same 3No files I mentioned earlier onto disc (the Mpeg2 source, Mpeg4 DAR and Mpeg4 PAR) and spin them in a Mpeg4/DVD stand-alone player (that supports anamorphic signalling), you'll find that the Mpeg4 PAR encode does not exactly match the Mpeg2 source. But the Mpeg4 DAR encode does.
The same thing happens when you mux the same Mpeg4 streams into the .MP4 container and play them in a stand-alone or device (such as a Sigma Xcard) that supports that container too!
What many people fail to remember/appreciate is that Mpeg2 uses 4:3 and 16:9 calculations based on DAR... not PAR. So if you want exact pixel placement for you Mpeg4 encodes, use the DAR settings!

However it would be nice to have an option to "override" the NeroRecode AR-Setting for proper display on PC (and that is PAR).

I believe that most of computer video software programmers have never heard about eg. "EBU Tech Rec R92-1999" that defines active picture area (52 µs) to 702 pixels wide and that is also the width of 4:3/16:9 area.
So eg. square pix 16:9 PAL (from 720x576) is 1050x576.
Eg. all Adobe's and almost all the others software uses the incorrect 1024x576.

But we are moving into a totally digital age now. An age in which more and more of us will be buying and connecting devices via DVI and HDMI. An age in which over-scan will be gone... Just like it is now on your VGA display!
And for those of you watching 1280x720p and/or 1920x1080/88i high-def "square pixelled" content via an analogue connection, such as s-video or component (ie: not via VGA, DVI or HDMI). Have you ever worked out how much of the image you are not able to see because of over-scan?
Rather suprising... isn't it!

The ITU standard is obsolete as the old TVs it was made for...

approximately, what bitrate and deblocking settings should be used for dvd movies when converting to nerodigital avc, for a good looking rip, and what is the difference made when that adaptive option is ticked or not , which is above deblocking strenght option! Also, are those automatic sharp and automatic smmoth options good?

Yep... I ran the promo versions of NeroVision Express (without Nero Burning ROM) for many months, while testing Recode2
