to me this sounds like RB doesn't like VOBs whose name is something like VTS_*_MENU*VOB and it doesn't like the VOB whose size is > 1Gb.

Can RB remove the layer breaks in the final output please.
A warning about this if they are there would be good too.

I'll pick it up and try it.

Could you post the contents of your REBUILDER.INI file so I can make sure I encode it with the same settings as you. Also, do you do any preprocessing?

johnhamler1
21st September 2005, 18:08
jdobbs,

no preprocessing, or I would not ask you if it was my mistake.

but i think it comes from this ILVU thing. I have no idea what ilvu is, this movie has 2 formats and an extended version. .

ok, sorry for the multiple posting!
have you been able to get a copy of this movie?

Were you doing an OPV encode against a multiangled source? If so, don't. Try using 2 pass VBR.

what is OPV?, I was doing nothing wrong i guess... , did a copy, that s all.I tried 2 pass last night, same error.

Yes, and it worked okay. But I just remembered that the current version I'm using had some changes to the way HC gets setup. I also had installed HCBatch_016.EXE. So, I've gone back to v1.00 RC6 as it was shipped and am running it again to see if it acts differently.

Yep. I'm able to repeat it now. The newest (unreleased) version works, though. I'm going back through to see what causes it and why it was corrected by my recent changes just to be sure.

Um, issue #11 again?

I'm new here and to DVD-rb. Seems awesome and a much better alternative to DVDShrink. Results look fantastic for 50-60% compressions (where DVDShrink looks like crap).

I'm using v.95 and the first 2 DVDs I tried to back up: True Lies and Breakfast at Tiffanys both result in a freeze at the original discs' layer change. That is the player freezes the frame and won't continue (waited about 60 seconds before stopping the player).

I've tried rebuilding, reencoding with different settings and I can't fix it. Heck I even did a reauthor for the movie only with DVDShrink (without compression and removing the layer change) followed by DVD-rb and I still have the freeze.

The stand-alone player is a Sony C650D.

Reading through this thread I can't believe it's still an issue.

jdobbs
1st October 2005, 20:33
???? That's a new one.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

DoctorM
1st October 2005, 21:41
Is it possible the problem was caused by ripping the DVD to hard drive with DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0? Or is that the preferred way of doing it?

jdobbs
1st October 2005, 21:55
Yes, that's the preferred way of doing it (either in file mode or as an ISO).

DoctorM
2nd October 2005, 03:36
Just to verify the source of the problem, I took the same image from my hard drive, ran it through DVDShrink and burned a rw disc.

Besides looking crappy from 63% compression, there was no hangup at the original layer change.

That to me is extremely odd... so even though DVDShrink can make whatever it is playable, if you pre-process with DVDShrink it still gets borked by DVDrb later.

I know sony units are more sensitive to this problem, but I'm scratching my head here.

Harrysmiith
2nd October 2005, 10:13
Not sure if this is relevant - as I'm new to all this and still trying to figure things out.
It looks like pre processing is supposed to be a no no ? I have just tried to back up a DVD of about 7.7 gig made up of 8 episodes of a 1955 tv program. Using Movie only just gets me one episode. So I just used shrink I to reauthor with no compression to make an ISO. Previously I used shrink to write the files to my HD and ended up with
all 8 episodes but the first having a nasty banding problem - caused no doubt by using shrink first.

I have no reason to use shrink first except that I can't find a way to back up only the 8 episodes

I'd use PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) since it provides the info in a easy to read table. Simply load the title into PgcEdit and double-click on the main title to see the where the layer-break is and if there are any cell commands. It might look something like this (before any processing):VTST 1:

@Harrysmiith
Don't use "Movie only" on episode dvds! That's because in this case, DVD-RB looks for the biggest VTS and decided it to be the main movie and ignores all others.
You have to use "Fullbackup mode" and blank unwanted material with "Video Segment Editor".

So DVDShrink's title shows layer breaks at the first and last chapter with a code of 2. DVDRB's title shows the same.

The original DVD had the layer break at cell 28.
DVDShrink and DVDRB had a value of 10 with no for layer break. In fact every single number is identical except what is in the "VOBU Entry", and the 2 "Last VOBU" columns.

I would have posted the code, but I can't figure out how you copied them.

What skin are you using? I am using the 'Rockas Original' which has your selections in different places.

The segment editor is listed as 'Preview/Edit' tab in 'Rebuilder default' skin.

But it is listed under the 'Options section' and is called the 'Video Segment Viewer/editor' in the 'Rockas Original' skin.

You may get more people helping by posting in the main Rebuilder forum area BTW. This thread is the sticky for known issue reports.

Glad to see you took my advice to come to doom9 for DVD-RB info. instead of trying to find it in that other website forum. ;) :D

So, Welcome to doom9!

Regards,:)

P.S. From the Rebuilder Help file compiled by Rockas:

(1) If you're going to make a backup of "Episodes" (Like TV series) DVDs you must be careful with all the options that may, somehow, remove quality from the "considered" Extras. DVD Rebuilder will always consider the largest VTS (In Sectors or MB) as the "Main Movie". If you apply any of the "Extras reduction" features on an episode DVD, Rebuilder will act as usual - meaning that there will be an Episode (the largest one) with full quality and all the rest will have their quality diminished.

So am I on my own with the layer-change freeze problem? I know it's weird, but it does mean something non-standard is being written.

No you're not alone, the first time I ever encountered this problem was when I first backed up Michael Mann's Collateral. I made a backup of the disc and compared it with the original, there is a good pause when changing layers on the DVD5 version encoded by DVD-RB. What I did was started from scratch and kept the DTS track only as opposed to the other DVD5 having the Dolby 5.1 & Commentary track. My DTS copy came back without problems but ever since I've run into a few DVDs that choke on layer breaks, I too have a Sony which I think is at fault. My old Samsung DVD-V1000 plays those discs fine as well as my Sony 975v Upscaling Player. Being that I keep my backups of DVD9 & DVD5 on a partitioned drive, which goes through deletions every now and then...this led me to wipe my free space on that drive and also removing AUDIO_TS folders altogether (Sony players are picky). Might be a coincidence but ever since then I've had no problems. I've had this problem with The Incredibles, Collateral as I mentioned & Jaws (Widescreen Anniversary Collector's Edition). Those discs are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head. I've done just about everything recommended by members of D9, checking the DVD in IfoEdit and removing the layer break there but that doesn't help, using DVD Remake Pro and adjusting the layer break removal in the .ini file for DVD-RB. Here is one thing I am certain of, of all the people I've talked to who have experienced this problem...one thing is common, a Sony DVD player. :sly:

DoctorM
4th October 2005, 07:24
So what are we missing? I mean, yeah it's just Sonys, but the problem does seem to be restricted to DVD-rb not other shrinking/re-encoding software (that I know of).
Since the IFOs from DVDshrink and DVDrb were nearly identical (except for the VOBUs as noted above) I tried washing the DVDrb IFO's through IfoEdit using 'correct VOB-Unit pointers'. It still didn't fix the problem.
I can't help feeling that the problem isn't in the IFO files. I'm wondering from what you're saying, HKT3020_1, that maybe the problem has to do with how the audio at the layer break is handled. Just an idle thought.

HKT3020_1

Made a backup of Collateral after typing that post last night, keeping only the DD5.1 track and it plays back perfect on my Sony NC-665P. Just to play it safe, defragment your drive containing the DVD9 backup and wherever the work folder is located for DVD-RB. Then I would encode that DVD which is giving you trouble. Once that is done make a image of the disc using ImgTool Classic so what you should have is the Main folder & VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS. Afterwards burn it with Decrypter, I haven't gone back to using Nero for burning DVDs since I formatted last month not on this computer anyway. :D

You can see this post which I made last month and what other members had to say afterwards concerning Nero for burning DVD Video.

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=718186#post718186

I do hope what worked for me will work for you, I was gonna as far as to using Scenarist for removing the layer break altogether. :p

DoctorM
4th October 2005, 22:16
Sooo. I tried using ImgTool Classic, but it gave me an error "Either VIDEO_TS.IFO or VIDEO_TS.VOB is not of correct size."
Next I tried a bigger hammer: I took the rebuilder'ed(?) disc and demuxed the audio, video and subpic using VobEdit.
I then ripped the CellTimes with IfoEdit.
I then used IfoEdit to re-authored the DVD. (Btw, it noted buffer-underruns)
ImgTool liked the re-authored version, but to be more scientific, I burned with Nero.
It now plays through the layer change flawlessly. SO whatever the problem, it's definitely in the IFO or BUP files.
It also means I have a more complicated, but workable way to generate backups with DVDrb until the problem is found.

I can provide the IFO of the reauthored version if you're interested JDobbs.

I would like to remind everyone to reread the first post in this thread. This thread is intended to keep track of known issues with the software.

Unfortunately, I haven't kept on top of that like I planned to, but regardless, THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR THE DISCUSSION OF SPECIFIC PROBLEMS themselves.

If you encounter a problem, even if you are sure it is an error in the program:

1. Use the search feature to check if there is an existing thread discussing it, or a similar problem.

2. Start a new thread if you cannot find an existing one.

It not only makes it easier to keep discussions focused, but it is an immense help to future users when searching for a specific problem discussion and solution.

DoctorM
7th October 2005, 05:01
Well that kinda blows.
DVDrb is going go to a final release tomorrow with an open issue that prevents me from making a single working dvd9->dvd5 disc for my sony.

Not much point in my donating since I have no idea how long it'll be before this software is actually useful to me. Guess I'll have to look elsewhere.

Again, that blows, I wish I could have helped you work out that bug before going final...

The Freeware version is still in beta (note the version number that is less than 1).

I think it's reasonable that a developer would spend more time taking care of his "paying" customers... don't you?

I will take a strike, willingly, if you give this lame ass DoctorM whiner a strike. (M=Moron) incouraged is spelled encouraged BTW.
You have warned him about posting in this STICKY for known issues.
As a matter of fact, every and I mean every one of his posts has been is this thread. If he had any sense he would be posting in the main forum where he might receive more assistance.
I wish I could have helped you work out that bug before going final...How likely is that? If his technical acumen is as good as his reading skills I find it highly doubtful.
Not much point in my donating since I have no idea how long it'll be before this software is actually useful to me. Guess I'll have to look elsewhere.Don't let the door hit you in the ass!

Closed Caption support can be probably be removed as an issue starting w/v1.09, though it does require enabling a hidden option in the INI file (presumably CC support will be on by default in the future).
