You must need a therapist. I couldn't bare to watch more than 30 seconds. It's an insult to all J.D.'s.

Boxing Helena (1993) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106471/).... Oh dear

At least Kim Basinger had the good sense to turn it down... even if she did get sued.

It's so bad it has not even made it to PAL DVD... Which is good ;)

The worst one I've ever seen was Scary Movie. It wasn't funny at all, had no story in it, it was just boring crap from beginning to end.
I haven't watched the sequels, so I don't know if they are worse. Pretty hard to beat the first movie, though.

The worst one I've ever seen was Scary Movie. Scary Movie was a comedy-ripoff of the Scream movies (and other popular horror thrillers). It was making fun of the other movies by quoting scenes. If you haven't seen any of the movies it was making fun of, then of course it wasn't funny at all for you... :)

Apart from the political contents I can't see a technical reason why Fahrenheit 9/11 was bad. The film was pure infotainment. Documentary mixed with comedy in a very enjoyable way. Think what you want about Moore's thesis, but I think the movie was made brilliantly. It's not intellectual or anything - it was able to reach the masses even its main theme is politics...that's quite something for a documentary-style movie!

keeping this more about the films people rather than what they are about.

Maybe this is why alge66 said it was the worst film ever?

/me avoids political discussion

ummm... what's with the link list then?

you do realise that a lot of those sites are bankrolled by republicans either directly or indirectly.

but on the flipside, f911 put me off moore forever. as a non-american i found it sick-making... even worse that i'm on his side! it's just not the way to put a case - if the good guys misrepresent everything, then what the hell separates them from the bad guys? you gotta have credibility or skeptics like me will just dismiss you as a fat, whingeing hypocrite.

the corporation was a great doco. though obviously taking a side, it still presented both sides of the argument without obvious distortion (7 hours of extras to pore through if you don't believe me - it's a monster).

as far as bad movies go... here's a few from my neck of the woods:

- Lantana. this is by far the most overrated movie i've ever encountered. it's put australian film back at least 30 years, right when we're reeling from the australia-us FTA messing everything up. not only was it boring as hell, but it was self-indulgent pseudo-intellectual art-wank that served no meaningful purpose but to alienate the 4 or 5 people that bothered to actually watch it instead of just rave about how "good" it is.

- Somersault. extremely boring, with pretty inaccessible and not particularly likable characters. you see boobs, but it's totally not worth sitting through it just for that. obviously trying to be another "lantana", which isn't a good idea.

- Take Away. bloody terrible. breakfast-radio style comedy film with far less charisma. i thought it might be cool, but it was just tiresome.

sadly, all the talent here goes overseas because it can't get funding here. the Australian Film Finance Commission is run by a pack of empty-headed, elitist wankers that clearly don't have the best interests of a once great industry at heart. so good films go overseas to get made (and go quite well, too), and bad films get made, fail, and make it harder to fund the next one.

it's a good thing everyone's got cameras now and can just go shoot their own ideas and make something of them without the need for much funding.

i posted the list on my blog, jsut a copy and paste :) i must say that i made my mind up that there is no one answer and its really in the middle, but thats IMHO.

i see it as a moore discussion ;) maybe on thin ice though, so im gunna call it a day on the moore subject :)

I would have to go with a little flick called Captured (http://imdb.com/title/tt0130530/). This flick was just plain bad, no comedy in it whatsoever, like a good bad movie can offer (see: Mansquito). I believe it was STV, but it might have been a latenight cable release.

As for movies with moderate commercial success, I almost always point my finger towards The Hours (http://imdb.com/title/tt0274558/). I was bored nearly to death by it, and it played a large part in my complete lack of faith in The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That, and the whole Martin Scorsese dilly-o!

I note that, in this thread, very often, "bad movie" = "boring movie". Even if I think it's a way to define it, I think that it's not always the case.
I found some movies a little (or sometimes really) boring but appreciate their qualities. One example comes to my mind: The Pledge (by Sean Penn). I came close to sleep while watching, but I still consider it as a good movie: serious, straight, mature, etc. Far from some of the mainstream shits which awake you only with decibels...

Alone with this paradox?

Another way to define a bad movie: when you just feel shame for the director/actors... ?

oh, there was a movie with keenu reaves (the guy of matrix), got it at wall mart for 5$....borring! and stupid!I dont remember the title...

harry putter really suck!I watch the first one, com'on, this is stupid, I "zzzzzzzzz" during the movie.and I can not believe that some guys went to watch the second movie.dont u have better to do in ur life???

Alone with this paradox?

you have a good point. however, no matter how slowly paced a movie may be, it doesn't mean it's boring.

but if people find a movie boring, it quite simply has failed artistically. if the medium of film can't excite an audience, then the director (or whoever) simply hasn't tried - film is such an engaging experience. you're in a large dark room with speakers all around you and a gigantic screen in front of you. actors loom like gods in a closeup. a cinema is a modern-day temple, really. it's pretty hard for this kind of spectacle to be boring, but somehow a lot of filmmakers manage it. perhaps they are boring people? or did they hate their subject so much that they didn't care how they presented it?

i've never quite had the balls to do this yet, but i wonder if people can get refunds if they don't like the movie they paid to see? so many movies promise so much but deliver so little, that really i think enough refunds could help the industry - after all, sales figures say nothing about how good a film is, merely how effective the ad campaign was. refund figures, however, could tell the other side of the story - how many people hated the film.

johnhamler1
28th April 2005, 15:52
I asked for a refund when I was in the USA.
left 15 minutes after the show begins, went to the desk: "look, I would like a refund, cuz this movie really sucks, can I get my money back?"

for me it works!

Of course, thats what this thread is about. I wasn't exactly expecting the Most Definitive Guide Ever To Bad Movies Vol. 1 - but more of an Anti-Desert Island favorites list. When I start a thread like this (and maybe even the person who started this one) I am looking for some movies that may have slipped under my radar, or that I haven't seen in a long while. I actually discovered Mansquito that way (mentioned in my previous post). That movie sucked so hard it owned!

Afterwards, we should add up all the various titles here and see who won.

I walked out of Excess Baggage when it was in the theatres, didn't get a cash refund, but I did get a free showing of another movie in the theatre. I forget what I watched, but I cashed in the voucher dealie thing in upon the next available showtime. I watched maybe 20 minutes of Excess Baggage before I left. Caught it on cable a few years later. Heh.

You can find a lot of bad movies at Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, there's not a movie critic in the country that likes King's Ransom. There's your bad movie of the year. I haven't seen the movie, but the plot sounds reasonably good (a rich guy who fakes his kidnapping to prevent his ex from getting his money). Who says the worst movie has to have the worst plot?

xXx: State of the Union (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0329774/) is absolutely horrible. As for sequels its worse than Charlies Angels 2 (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0305357/) and giving Starship Troopers 2 (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0367093/) a run as worst sequel ever in my book.

of course, watching it now i just think it's funny.

that ship looked awesome, too. really brutishly ugly, like being tailgated by the truck from Duel in space. stuff of nightmares. cudos to the designers right there.

Does it have to be a mainstream movie? Because I had the misfortune of not changing the channel soon enough and I saw a bit of "Playmate of the Apes" on HBO the other day. Oh...My...God.

It is so easily the worst movie ever made, by far.

It was like watching a train wreck. After 10 minutes of that I wanted to sell my TV.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I never knew bad movies are so exciting to discuss (142 posts, 5388 views, 8 pages). I thought they'd always warrant silent disregard.

If we have so much gusto discussing bad films, seriously thinking about them, lovingly naming them, longingly dissect them, then they are popular!

Maybe, therefore, they aren't that bad, after all?

Regards.

Although you are certainly aware of it, here (http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom) is a list of bottom 100 films voted by users at the IMDb.

Worst movie: Alien 3

Nothing like killing off all the main characters of the story that were so well developed in Alien & Aliens. Want to know more? Listen to the end of Jim Cameron's commentary on Aliens.

I had to add my 2cents too, I haven't come across this thread yet. Also I think it's curious that this worse film ever thread has nearly double the response as the best ever film thread.

I think how bad a movie is should be judged on how angry it makes you, how far you feel it's insulted your intelligence.

It's already been mentioned but the movie that just made me spitting, hopping mad was Independence Day. I still to this day don't know how my head didn't explode or I didn't throw up when Bill Pullman (the president that doubles up as world saving fighter pilot) made that patriotic rallying speech and gets saluted by that soldier 'cause he's so goddamed heroic. My first reaction was to laugh (for a second or two in sheer disbelief), the second to kill the director. It still gives me goosebumps from cringing about it even now. Personally for me, it's the worst film I've seen by a country mile.
Rant over

Another film I'd like to give an honourable mention because the ending was so bad it ruined the whole film for me (which I was quite enjoying until then) is The Lawnmower Man. Again, the ending made me totally angry. Why oh why did that telephone have to ring? It's the most predictable plot "twist" I've ever come across and consequently I had to completely reevaluate my opinion of it.

@ sugarmonster
That clip is hilarious. I just don't get what was going on in their heads when they came up with the split screens idea. There's only ever one part of the split that has anything going on, in the rest of the splits there are just people standing around doing nothing. Genius. It's a bit like the different camera angles you can view on interactive big brother, except there's nothing ever going on in any of the cameras in BB! ;)

I think this demonstrates the difference between a film that's so bad it's good and a film that's just damn right bad, the ability to make you laugh. I know I said I laughed at Independence Day, but it was genuine disbelief at the garbage that was being screened and it wore off very quickly.
