The splitter already supports chapters, however it doesn't expose them using the proper interfaces, so the player can see them. You can see the chapters in the splitter GUI while playing.

as for muxer i think there is no reason to prepare chapters before file was muxed.
There should be program that allows to add and edit chapters entries on existing mkv.

If you think another way, could you provide some situations where this function is needed in muxer?

Regarding adding chapters using the muxer... if you use mkvmerge for instance to add chapters, i've got a feeling it's going to remove the ac3 core from TrueHD. I'll test.

Would be really handy to be able to import a text file (like the chapter text file that's created using eac3to from a blu-ray disc) that contains chapter info.

We have app Video Splitter (http://www.solveigmm.com/?Products&id=VideoSplitter) which actually can join files too (e.g. dvd's vob files.)
This package also contains the console batch utility (Program Files\Solveig Multimedia\SolveigMM Video Splitter\smm_batchsplit.exe)
It's in plan to add mkv muxer functionality to this apps.

Ok. Just had a go with this. Using the 32 bit version, it splits nicely and ffdshow can see the PGS subs. (It still doesn't get the concept of default/no defaults but I'll deal with that with later). However, with DTS-HD MA tracks, bitstreaming is giving me a horrible constant BUZZ noise. I don't get that with the other splitters. Um, hmm, hang on. It's only happening with the ones created with mkvmerge. It's not happening with MakeMKV created files. Just kill me now. Is there anyway you can look into this issue? Thanks!

Forget the DTS-HD MA thing for now. I remade it with the latest version of mkvmerge and now it's playing fine. But, I'm not getting the subs to show up. Would that happen if the PGS subs are compressed? ffdshow can see the sub tracks, but, they never get displayed. mkvmerge compresses them by default so I'm wondering if that's throwing off the splitter?

The question is you've tested a premade mkv file, not any other created by solveig muxer, correct?

do nothing to dll files. Just register the ax files.

And don't bother putting them in the windows dir. Just make a folder for them somewhere else, keeping all the files in the same folder, and just register the ax file. I created bat files to register/unregister them so I can easily switch between splitters. :)

Ok, remade it yet again with mkvmerge 4.11 and this time told it not to compress the PGS subs with zlib. Now they're displaying fine. Can this get added on the todo list? VLC has a similar issue but it would be nice if compressed subs were supported to save a little space. Thanks so much!

Yea, I saw that thread. 4.1.1 is much better IMO. He's done a lot of work with it. Now I know how to make them so they work using SMM splitter. So this is very sweet. Another option to play with. :) However, ffdshow still doesn't notice the default flag so there's some work to be done. (For instance, if I mux it and set NONE of the PGS subs to be default, I don't want subs just magically enabled for no reason.) Nonetheless, this is great.

I'll see what I can do. I think I can remux a short clip with mkvmerge 4.0.0 to repro it. Not sure what the difference is but I'll see if I can repro it tomorrow and get you a clip.

That's particularly useful when multiple splitters are installed. Then you can easily switch between them if needed.

Regarding mkv chapter markers, it would be a great idea to have a section in the muxer interface where you can load up a txt file (say created by eac3to) that contains the chapter markers. The muxer would then insert these marker in the mkv file. mkv chapter are pretty much standard now and all players (mpc-hc, etc) can read them and seek to them.

You could also maybe read the chapter info direct from the video source, like a blu-ray's mpls file, or from a video only mkv file created by ripbot264?

It should have no effect at all on AVI, so I don't understand what you mean by that.
A user can set the GUID of his desired source filter in that key. Be it Haali, Gabest, or Solveig. So you can have all three installed, and change the desired one easily, without needing to mess with merits (which btw don't work reliably with source filters).
All you need to do is add a source filter, even if you personally don't want to use this registry key. So I don't understand your reasoning. See the Gabest filters. Those consist of both a source and a splitter. By default the splitter get used with the standard async file reader. The source filters only get used when forced.

2- I succeeded to get srt subs but not PGS
3- Subs track are not very well identified in ffdshow, all are listed as "(english)" even it's another language
4- A choice "No subtitles" need to be added in the subs track list like Haali does, very useful to disable subs, and need to be selected by default if none of other subs track have their default flag set.

My test environment was Windows 7 x64 (French), Media Center as player, ffdshow 3498

SMM splitter muxer should support all subtitles from matroska codecs spec (http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/codecid/index.html)

S_TEXT/ASCII Plain text subtitles in system default character encoding
S_TEXT/UTF8 Plain text subtitles in UTF-8 encoding
S_TEXT/SSA SubStation Alpha subtitles in UTF8 encoding
S_TEXT/ASS Advanced SubStation subtitles in UTF-8 encoding

I think I've identified a slight issue. Mosu would be upset. :D I believe your splitter isn't supporting audio with header compression removal. When I create an MKV with mkvmerge, which now defaults to using header compression removal on audio tracks, ffdshow doesn't bitstream the audio properly and I get either low volume with a major high pitched buzz or just a high pitched buzz and nothing else. If I remake the MKV with compression turned off on the audio track, it plays fine. I realize that the "solution" appears to be to just make sure you turn off compression on all of them, but, Mosu is insistent that splitters and players fix this on their end because it's part of the matroska spec. I guess if you need info on this maybe shoot a pm over to Mosu. I'm guessing he'd be willing to point you in the right direction on how to implement it. He says it's easy and only requires a few extra lines of code. Man we software engineers are hilarious at times! :D Thanks!!

I'll contact Mosu to resolve this problem, but if you point more information about how this feature (header compression removal) is implemented this will help, because Mosu can be quite busy to assist this problem. You've mentioned that this is described in matroska spec could you point where exactly ?

I don't have that information unfortunately. I'm only repeating what Mosu has told us in the MKVMerge thread. That's why I recommend pm'ing him and asking if he has more info on it. I just know that if I have an MKV made with MKVMerge and I forget to select no compression on the audio track, Solveig splitter won't pass it correctly to ffdshow for bitstreaming. If I set the compression to no, it works. Mosu says this is header removal compression and is part of the spec. I'm taking his word on that as I really have no idea.
