Same here on Vista64. I believe I saw it prior to SP2

Yes and yes.

After you OCR a few SUPs, the rest are faster to ocr. Keep in mind though that it does not keep getting better and better to the point that it will ocr everything you throw at it perfectly.

As far as backing up the file that keeps your personal ocr'ing choices in it, yes its saved in a file that you can backup and restore. For windows xp, the file is stored in the following directory : "c:\documents and settings\[user name]\Application Data\SupRip" where [user name] is your windows xp user name. As for windows vista, I'm not completely positive on the directory hierarchy...I believe its "c:\Users\"[user name]\AppData\Roaming\SupRip", but I can't be sure since I hate vista.

Save the file/files in that folder and restore to that folder if you need to reinstall windows or whatever.

is it also possible to delete the corresponding letter for a character somehow? e.g. i've mistyped at some point in a subtitle and then I only notice that in the next sup I want to ocr, but its not displayed as an error, because I've already entered this recognize character the last time and now its only using it every time its seen. so I'd have to search the whole sup manually afterwards for that mistake :S
any way to delete such single recognized characters without deleting the whole file which stores everything?

It seems that there's an error in the font file that's causing the crash. I'll introduce better checks in the next version.

In the meantime, try going to the "%appdata%\suprip" folder and deleting the text file in there.

If you click on the misidentified letter in the image, you can change the assigned text and then press OK.

Hi,

First of all, do you plan to make the source publicly available?

I have an idea of a different way to implement OCR - one which is based on the MODI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging) library. It's very reliable and supports as many languages as you have installed on your system.

For those with Microsoft Office 2003 (or above) installed, we could very easily take advantage of this library and reliably perform OCR on the images.

I could probably cook up something very quickly so long as I can get my hands on the code which SupRip uses to generate the subtitle images.

Zachs
18th June 2009, 10:22
Additionally, I'd also apply the following filters on the image before doing OCR:

1) black & white
2) increase contrast to max

Note that ideally we should allow the user to choose which filter to apply and how it is applied to get the best OCR results.

If you click on the misidentified letter in the image, you can change the assigned text and then press OK.you didn't read it all, what I mean is that i missrecognized a letter of a former movie and this then becomes saved and used again each time for new movies as well and it's not recognized as such mistake or unknown letter. so I'd have to check each line of that sub manually to find out the error which would take longer that just redoing the whole sub with a freshly installed suprip without any (faulty) characters saved.

would it be possible to get the saved .srt file compatible to subtitleworkshop? atm files saved with SupRip cannot be opened with subtitleworkshop ("...is a bad subtitle or unsupported format."). in order to open it then I have to open this file with aegisub and save it as .ass. this .ass file can then be opened with subtitleworkshop. but sometimes there are problematic files which have characters which aegisub doesn't like and then aegisub won't open the file as well. so here I am with 1400 lines OCR'ed, but not being able to open the file at all.

With notepad save the .srt with ANSI encoding.

Thunderbolt8
14th August 2009, 15:44
thanks, works. however, no matter what other encoding formats I choose, some symbols are dropped and turned to garbage, as that note symbol of lyrics for example. in that case, choosing UTF8 might be better, because it turns those notes into ascii garbage, while ANSI turns them into a questionmark, which is a disadvantage when trying to turn them back with search & replace afterwards. UTF8 also turns those accents `´to gargabe while ANSI keeps them, but thats easier to restore than questionmarked notes from ANSI.
so I guess UTF8 would make more sense?

edit: actually, when just saving the UTF8 .srt file again with subtitleworkshop and then open it with aegisub afterwards, then all characters remain unchanged and fine there.

I just updated to version 1.16 to fix the problems Mtz had with his Romanian subtitles.

Now there's a problem with capitalized characters like this
http://bilkoff.hostzi.com/suprip%201.16.PNG
If there were some character on the top line, it will be detected as the same one.

Also I have some problems with the "Space Width" option with this subtitle (http://bilkoff.hostzi.com/F2_T25_Subtitle%20-%20Spanish.sup) (I don't know if others). Having the "Space Width" option on 11, on the first line, if I have the mark on "Automatically continue...", it puts a space between the two firsts characters, if I OCR without the mark, it does it like I can see on the preview.

Is there anyway to alter when the subtitles start? Like remove a total os 1 minute from the time of each sub? I am asking because the subtitle file I get starts at 2 min into the episode, but actual audio start about 10 seconds into the episode.

"everything" ? I can't get it to decipher anything (ver 1.16)! My first venture into subs and the English sup file for the 2 movies, (from original bd's) I tried, resulted in the same gibberish as fazza8's.

I don't see a guide on the author's site nor do I see where/how to enter numbers, letters, etc manually. And if you have to go through all that what's the point of the program. Am I missing something here ? Thanks for any help !

laserfan

Am I missing something here ?Yes, I think so... ;)

I don't have the program up in front of me, but once you load the subtitle file as demuxed from your BD, you have to click on the OCR button (at the left, just below the middle of the page). Then the program goes to the first character it doesn't understand, simultaneously showing you the original bitmap of the sub, and you hand-enter the character into the entry box. It will show your entry in the window below the bitmap, and so it learns all the chars and eventually whizzes along with little further input required.

Most times in my experience there are very few subs it can't easily OCR (usually subs w/mixes of regular and italic fonts) and often OCRs with NO manual entries needed. Only occasionally have I seen subs where it can't recognize ANY of the chars as you've encountered, and the prior poster.

Thanks laserfan, but that's exactly the procedure I followed, althought it doesn't go to the first character. It OCR's and in this case there were 1094 subs and 1094 errors. No unusual characters, no italics, no mixing, just straight text.

What ver are you using ?

Edit: Ok I was using auto ocr, not the one ch at a time....sorry but I don't have the patience for this program. A 1044 lines and it took me a half hour just to get to 135. It's putting spaces where they don't belong, italics where there are none. In other words I give up.

I had the same problem initially, but i when i changed strategy it worked OK:

First 3-5 min. i used a low tolerance (5-15), after that I change the tolerance to something very high (200).

That way i takes me 10 min total to go through some 1200 lines. -and there are no errors when i review the result.

I did not find any alternative to suprip when i have to extract m2ts sub to .srt. *if* the PCH C-200 really does bitmap subs at some point, maybe i don't need to do this anylonger, but if is it going to be anything like A-100, where the threads talked about this for years, and nothing happend, then I just keep thanking the author of suprip for this excelent tool.

Is there still any development going on for this tool?

I think there is a bug in the .srt output format.

There shouldn't be any empty subtitle lines in the output formatting as (good ol') SubRip rejects those files as corrupt. And many hardware players fail to display that particular subtitle correctly. Therefore you have to remove the unwanted lines manually...

As an example. This output:
1
00:00:13,513 --> 00:00:14,847
<unwanted empty line>
Ein Grad bis zur Überlappung.

2
00:00:16,474 --> 00:00:18,934

Should look like this:
1
00:00:13,513 --> 00:00:14,847
Ein Grad bis zur Überlappung.

2
00:00:16,474 --> 00:00:18,934

In summary there should be a routine which checks for empty lines just after the last line with a timecode.

Lexxuz, if you just load and save the subtitle in subtitle workshop (afters saving in ANSI from Unicode) the empty lines are gone.

Hi,
I got the same problem as boxXx, and I've already tried to extract suprip again, demux my sup file from scratch, test the sup file with older revisions of suprip.
The crash happens only with some discs (Samurai Champloo) but not with others. I've uploaded my sup file here: http://hotfile.com/dl/28787386/33b6ce0/01.sup.html

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

I have uploaded the sup file here http://www.mediafire.com/file/mwydgodmwyu/bad subtitles.zip for your convenience :)

If anyone has gotten the time to find out, why this crashes suprip that would be great!

There's a palette animation in the first subtitle. Maybe this confuses SupRip. You could try to import/export this SUP with BDSup2Sub and see if it works then.

Did that - however, 1 subtitle is missing (a fade in after/with the first subtitle). The remaining subtitles appear fine.

Hm, yes there's obviously a "...60 years later" missing that's faded to. Apart from two minor display bugs I found when looking at this issue, I guess the main problem here is that there are two composition objects displayed at once where one if faded out and one is faded in.
BDS2S currently ignores the 2nd composition object but even if it wouldn't, this would be a pretty complicated place since obviously this is a cross fade, where one subtitle ("The Shire") is faded out, while the other one ("...60 years later") is faded in at the very same time. I'm yet to come up with an idea how to detect and handle this case automatically.

Space Width: 10
Character Split Tolerance: 1
Character Similarity Tolerance: 25
Contrast: 0Those settings don't afaict have anything to do with Is vs ls; what you want is to import the resulting .srt to Subtitle Workshop, and use its fine OCR Error Checking features to auto-correct Is and ls.

It seems to me I had to add a couple rules to SW to detect lI and Il but otherwise it works really well.

That's OK, I only did it for grins cuz it *was* an unusual, and unusually squeezed, subtitle font. If one is not a touch-typist it can indeed be painful to OCR because you have to train it in every letter of the alphabet plus caps and italics, ouch!

I have seen the behavior you mention re: jumping to the last subtitle--that sample didn't do that for me. I don't know what causes it; clearly it's some sort of bug in SupRip, but I"ve found that if I fiddle with a sup for a while I can always get OCR to work. Sorry couldn't tell ya what "fiddling" was required as I haven't seen that for a while.

P.S. Decided to take another look at your file, and (duh) the 2nd time-around SupRip recognizes everything, because I had already "trained" it. I did some nosing around and found a temp.font.txt file under SupRip in the AppData directory, and interestingly when you open that with Programmer's File Editor you can see very large blocks of numbers that in fact outline each of the characters it has learned for a font. I wonder if it will show-up here. Below is a lower-case y for example. Maybe if SupRip is not working (jumping to end and not OCR'ing) you might try quitting SupRip and deleting this file?

Turns out only forced subs was the issue, hah. Too bad this didn't help with the Borat subs.

Pretty sure Borat's English subs were another one considering it had fades...
I don't have that one and have never seen subs with fades to-date. Sounds like it might be an interesting effect though!

Is there any chance that suprip could handle DVB-style .sup files? I believe they're pretty much the same as Blu-style files, but something about them currently seems to upset suprip, crashing immediately on loading the file, with the following exceptions:

I've just downloaded SupRip because I want to convert BR subs to SRT. Seeing as I'm blind and my braille display never disploays characters not recgonised by Subrip and Suprip, I've got used to using Subrip Matrix files. Can anyone tell me how I can tell SupRip to use my matrix files? I read on Wikipedia that I have to put them in the Charmatrix directory, but that doesn't exist at all if you extract the SupRip archive,and when you create one, it does not help.
