Hi,

I'm trying to read a file x264/mkv, and everytime MPC is crashing with this message

Graphedit says, there's some flows it can't deal with.
It's seems to be subtitle flow, present in the video file.

Any ideas ?

The error comes from your H.264 decoder, not from Media Player Classic.

Unless people suddenly start submitting new patches, I don't foresee any new builds in the future. That is also why I won't start a new project. It will likely be dead right from the beginning. If anyone else really sees a need for a new project, go ahead and create it.
One has to assume that most users find MPC by googling for it.... and the results typically take them to Guliverkli SF, or to one of the many free video software websites. So until the patched builds show up there and are available to the casual user - all this good work will only be seen by the few hardcore MPC fans who frequent these forums... which is a shame.

Yeah, you're right. All the people looking for an alternative player will be directed to the google searches,
mostly overaged releases. And they will end up with the feeling: Booah, what an old fashion mess.

I will consider creating a new project at sf.net if I have some time. With a big fat note about the development state (or lack thereof).

Maybe Casimir would be amenable to having a branch with these basic patches off the original. Most of the codec sites are already stocking MPC HC instead of the original now, so it's not as big a deal, but it'd still be very useful until gabest responds.

I myself only use MPC and ffdshow tryouts and then was wondering if ffdshow tryouts would be able to do by itself what you had disabled MPC to do ? What i mean, is if i then would need to re-enable some of the MPC internal filters again, or if i didn't need to do that, since ffdshow tryouts maybe allready supported everything that you had disabled in MPC ?

2. Why did you change the default renderer into 'Overlay Mixer' ?

3. Do you know if i can just place the directx dll into the MPC program folder under %programfiles%, or if i will have to place it in '%windir%\system32' for it to be picked up correctly by MPC ?

Haali's does the first set better, and ffdshow does the other half better.

The dll can be in either the program folder or either windows folder, correct.

Compatibility is much higher (strange/old/broken streams, newer formats like evob/m2ts, tags, advanced container features, multichannel), that's unequivocally better in my opinion even if it was a bit slower. There shouldn't be any significant speed differences, though I'd expect lavc to be faster if there are.

And yeah, overlay is broken on some things, in fact it's very badly broken on a lot of older chipsets (flipped, green, distorted, etc), and it's a bit underfeatured, so I wouldn't have made that change.

I personally prefer Overlay above System Default (= VMR-7 on XP).

an MP3 but with an .avi.
That .avi does not open in VLC or WMP and I am at a loss on how I can solve it, thanks for your help.

I'm afraid I can't teach you this, because I'm not a good Virtualdub (probably the program that you'll have to use) user. With the sample in hand, come here and I'll try to help you. ;)

If I'd have to chose between:

1) Microsoft's splitter that works with all complete files
2) gabest's splitter that works on incomplete files but doesn't work with a portion of the complete ones,

I'd chose option (1).

The reasons are that I have no interest to watch incomplete (corrupted, in other words) files and I'd rather see all the complete files, not only some of them.

But that's only my choice.

Note: well, there are compliant opendml avi files that Microsoft's splitter would choke on, but nobody makes such files as the primary test platform for avi files is Windows and the inability to play those files would be noticed quite quickly by the encoder herself/himself.

If you use MPC to preview partially downloaded files, like from eMule or something, then the internal one is very useful.

For any normal AVI files that one would download, I mean backup, it does not matter much which one you use.

Complete files that don't work with one of the two are just plain crap and should be shift+del-entered.

but maybe thats because I was lucky ... but I figure

Interleaving would have had written those pieces into the AVI file close to the time when they are needed, avoiding lots of seeks.

If you ever encounter such a file - remux it! Preferably with AviMux-GUI, VirtualDubMod or similar able tools.

True, but I think the interval at which audio and video are interleaved (usually 500ms IIRC) is configurable - if you use the length of the whole file as interval you'll basically get a non-interleaved file... :D

You don't need to use the patches. Those are for developers. Ignore them.

The filters work like any other DirectShow filter. To enable them you need to register them:
