I discovered something intersting: Load a file and wait for it to start playing. Then pause it. Select some option like De-Interlace - playback starts again to show the changes, but then the pause ability is disabled.Interesting.... yes, that got pass me :o
v2.2 used to display all the options you selected for the encode (resolution, aspect ration, filesize, quantizer, audio type, filters to use) when it starts the encode.Well, most of them do get displayed, I assume you want all options shown?
Jacquers
4th February 2007, 06:43
Yeah, it would be nice if you could show all the options. Also, would it be possible to show whether the input file is interlaced when loading it so I know that I have to select the deinterlace option?

When h.264 HW support comes, do you think you will make a GUI that will cater for that conversion? I know earlier in the thread someone suggested it and said it would be good to keep that seperate from avi.NET (and I agree). If you read this (http://forums.divx.com/forum/viewTopic.php?id=2760)post you'll see that you already have most of the requirements in avi.NET to make such a GUI. Just send the avs script to x264.exe instead of avs2avi and use a different muxer...

would it be possible to show whether the input file is interlaced when loading it so I know that I have to select the deinterlace option? Not as far as I am aware. Just look for 'combing' in the preview, it should be quite obvious whether you need to de-interlace.

I did several movies with XviD single pass quantizer of 3.0. When I put the latest version of DRFAnalyzer on it shows that DRF of 3 for 50.9% and DRF of 4 for 49.1% of the frames. I encoded several movies the same way with the same results.
When I encode the movie in DivX, Quantizer of 4 the DRF is 4 for all the frames.
Is this what I should be expected?

Is this what I should be expected? It's probably not ideal to compare one at a certain quant and then another at a different quant.
I just did a little clip with both codecs at Q4.0 and got:
DIVX

DRF=7: 0 0.0%
DRF=8: 0 0.0%
DRF=9: 0 0.0%
DRF>9: 0 0.0%
You're not going to get constant 4 because of b-frames and/or b-frame offset ratio's. Don't know why you got a constant quant with divx.... did you use avi.NET on both tests? use same settings e.t.c. for both. Both my above tests were in 'normal' mode, not HQ.

That would be great but in my opinion avi.Net "should" have SAP(ps3,xbox or hd player) playability in mind, theres megui, automkv, bencos(dvd source not yet, soon),avidemux etc if you need.
but thats up to the author to decide.

I saw that a new version is out: v2.5.1.0
Changelog:
1. Slight alteration to some codec settings
2. Altered resizing filters, Bicubic when output width less than input, Lanczos when more.
3. Videosize boxes were enabled when loading a file whilst quant pass was selected - fixed.
4. Play/Pause button behaviour was incorrect when options were chosen during pause - fixed.
5. Added more information to encoding display window.
6. DivX HQ mode multi-core aware.
Thanks!

As far as I am concerned , I Made my choice on X264 codec
Just make a test on the " NEMO MOVIE " which causes the xvid and codecs to fail , showing some big artefacts and some image degradation even at High bitrates
Make the same test using X264 with HQ matrix slow, Lanczos and Bitrate 900 , it is quite astonishing
Neither artefacts nor image degradations
The final image file is 650 megs

Avi.net is the best automated conversion tool-period...
But e.g. Divx has more unused potential...
Will there be ever a selectable balanced-better-extreme-insane... quality choice (supported by the codec)... From my point of view it would lift the quality of the conversion some more... (instead of going to unsupported X264 by SAPīs)
It seems to me that avi.net when using divx is stuck in BALANCED mode

Avi.net is the best automated conversion tool-period...
With all due respect to avi.net - what about AutoGK?
That's not said to denigrate avi.net at all, but I just think it's awfully previous to start claiming "best" - even if you ignore the forums rules on such things.
From where I'm sat, avi.net has always had a very firm focus on standalone compatibility - whereas AutoGK has seemingly focused on being automated and quality (given the run-time constraints).
It's only recently that avi.net has started doing things like compressibility tests, that AutoGK has always (?) done.
Both apps seem very good at what they do, but have differing rationales, so I think it's doing a disservice to the other apps that do such conversions, to simply arbitrarily declare one the "best".

O.k. sorry sorry maybe I overstated a bit. It was just a way to motivate the author of this little program to keep going on. Avi.net is fast and very user-friendly .
Of course there are others that deserve respect. I hope this discussion does not take the upper hand.
Just wanted to know if codec settings will ever be selectable ...
The Scientist

It seems to me that avi.net when using divx is stuck in BALANCED modeThere's isn't actually many options that can be changed in DIVX, that being said, avi.NET only uses BALANCED mode in the 'normal' DIVX encode, click the "HQ" option and it will encode using the DIVX High Quality mode.

Will try this HQ mode.... It is just that I use virtualdub for my own conversions (edits from DV-tape)
When selection the DIVX-codec I can alter itīs settings and quality modes. I did not know that HQ-mode in avi.net did the same thing... Which codec settings are used in HQ-mode (comparable to better mode, extreme, insane ???)
Stop the presses... I found it using the search function... it is higher quality... Will try it out...

Hey Scientist, really great work! I love this tool.
I found that avi.net delivered slightly sharper pictures than autogk for my test movie in less time :)
(same codec, same audio, same file size)
I think that there is a bug with the output filename:
When I edit the output filename in the corresponding textbox, and then press ADD, that custom output file name is discarded, and the input file name is used (with .avi extension). When I use the dialog box (OUT button) to enter a new output file name, everything works fine.

By the way, the version I used is 2.5.1.0
I have a few small suggestions, just for the case your TODO list runs empty ;)
Don't delete the .TEMP folder, if the same movie is encoded multiple times with different settings. (results in error.)
On right click on an item in the job list, select that item, as in the windows explorer (as right clicking on an item and chosing Delete can delete other items in the list).
Allow to add jobs while encoder is running.
On STOP!, keep the list of unfinished jobs.
Allow to edit jobs which are in the job list. (for example, right click on an item in the job list, select edit, and all checkboxes and fields are set according to the job settings. Even shorter: double click on job).
The last two points are very useful, if you set up a list of jobs, and notice a mistake right after pressing START.

Hi,
Glad to hear you're still developing.
I've just downloaded and installed it, haven't tried it yet.
I did however notice that index.net is not there anymore. Is this coming back bigger and better than ever before? :)
I found it a great time saver, and as i've suggested before in this thread I think it could be even more useful.
Thanks for avi.NET

Your program is one of my favorites! It is my program of choice for DivX content.
When are you going to make a H264.net? If you could make the H264 world as easy to use as you made the DivX/XviD world you will have many people worship you. ;) [Don't add H264 to avi.net; too many tools try to do too much and end up with something too complicated.]

Weaver4 i too am hoping for a h264.net altough i dont see aproblem in integrating a acheckbox for x264 in the GUI. only a checkbox doesnt affect the program that much.
weaver4
3rd September 2007, 18:55
I would guess that it would need a checkbox for x264, then it would need to select the container (mpv or mp4), then it would need a place to select a profile (for apple.tv, ps2, psp, xbox360 and such; due to convoluted h264). That might make the clean avi.net GUI a little awkward.
The thing that would concern me the most is that the interface to the H264 codec, the filters and such are all different. These changes to the code could effect the wonderful reliability of avi.net. Not to say anything bad about MeGui, but it seems that when they fix one thing they break another, same could be said of AutoMKV (but not to the same degree). I would say avi.net works great, don't touch it; start a second program....but then I am not the author.

started using your soft today, to shrink down these DVD folders on my HD. Due to fileloss prior to this (and restoring the files), all my ifos were messed up and neither autogk nor anything else could read the dvd structure. after running all folders through ifo edit, your prog could open them (the others still couldn't ^^). So, you're the winner.
Now id like to suggest some things.
- pgc.net should have a batch function. I'm right now switching from folder to folder by hand to convert the files. Doing the actions beforehand, choosing in- and out folders would help a lot. It would already be nicer, if it would just remember the last position for in and out. I'm selecting "in" chosing drive e>subfolder1>subfolder2>subfolder3 then i choose "out" switch from e: to x:>subfolder1>subfolder2. when it's done, i chose "in" again, and where do i start? on x: instead of e:. Quite annoying when converting 26 folders ^^
- same for avi.net. I know it batches, but setting the settings just beforehand for each file (if you know the settings you would like) and then hitting go! which would result in indexing and afterwards converting, would allow to switch of the monitor after hitting the start button
- index.net... whats it for? i insert a vob, hit start, the vob diappears and the prog says "completed". I wouldn't have noticed, but index.net is the only link that appears in the start menu after installing your suite under vista x86 ultimate
also combining all three (or two, without that index.net ^^) progs into one, would help in the workflow.

I *have* read the guide. I meant a *proper* minimize button, i.e. near the close (X) button.
I didn't suggest a particular deinterlacer, I merely listed one as an example. As you have an HQ option for the encoder, perhaps you can also add an HQ option for deinterlacing.
I quite like the app - it's certainly the most stable and reliable (for me) of the one-click encoders I've tried. Whereas its simplicity is its strength, I'd like a few more options...

index.net... whats it for?Well, when you load a file into avi.NET it 'indexes' it, if you have more than one it may be easier to index them all first (using index.NET) so avi.NET doesn't have to.
I *have* read the guide. I meant a *proper* minimize button, i.e. near the close (X) button.Oh I see, no, haven't got one of them. I don't like the standard toolbar that gets displayed so have a different one which unfortunately doesn't have a minimise button in the traditional location.

Excellent, can't wait for the batch processing. I've been waiting for this before I attempt to encode my TV episode DVDs
I'd also like to remind you of a couple of ideas I had which would speed up the process for people that are encoding a lot. My ideas basically don't require the user to keep coming back to the PC after each stage.
pgc.net should allow a batch facility to rip multiple pgcs from multiple DVDs (or DVD folders on the hard drive). For example, I copy all 6 DVDs of the Sopranos series 1 to my hard drive, I then want to add all 13 episodes to the pgc.net list and hit go. Leave it for a while and let it do it's thing.
Index.net should have the option to also index subtitles. That way I can add all 13 episodes of sopranos to index.net, leave it to do it's thing and then the process of adding to avi.net is much quicker. I don't have to wait 13x3 mins for each episode to index the subs.
And then the obvious next step to these is to combine pgc.net and index.net so that I select the 13 pgcs from the 6 dvds on my hard drive. For each pgc, it rips, indexes, and indexes subs. So now I create my list, hit go, and when I come back, everything is ready for a quick avi.net session and then hit go again.
Thanks for the great app, keep it up.

Hello!
First of all, thank you for the great program and support.
I installed the latest version (15th september) and avi.net keeps crashing. It happens after indexing, just when the message "Loading Movie" appears. The program is then closed without any notice.
I then downloaded your support pack and installed everything. Same error. Tried with another DVD and nothing, both from the direct source and the pgc.net file.
The older version worked just fine.
These are my specs:
Windows Vista 32bits Ultimate
Xvid 1.1.3
Vobsub 2.2.3
Avisyth 2.5.7
avi.net 2.5.6.0 (15th september)
Pentium IV 3.0
1024 RAM
I had it working fine with version 2.5.1.0
Hope you can help me figuring this one out.

Hi Scientist! I just started to use your great program for my DivX encodes and had a couple questions:
1) Which quantization matrix is used for DivX? I rather like the H263 Optimized matrix but I'm not sure which one the program uses
2) Can I manually edit the AVS file before the encode? I'm converting a tv show (Dexter S1) and avi.net (as does DGIndex) detects the material as 29.9fps interlaced. However a simple telecide/decimate will produce 23.976fps progressive frames. With avi.net my only choices are to leave the material interlaced or deinterlace and encode as 29.9fps progressive
3) Is it possible to select a "no resize" option? I encode my dvds at 720x480 with 16:9 NTSC pixal aspect ratio, which is the highest resolution that my standalone player will accept. It recognizes the PAR flag and plays the files at the correct aspect ratio. Which brings me to my next question
4) Can I select the PAR that the program uses to encode? Currently it uses 1:1 square PAR, and I can modify the output with MPEG4 Modifier after the fact. But it would be nice if I could select this option through the program outright.
5) Just wondering how avi.NET is handling the 2nd pass of DivX encodes. When I do my encodes manually with VirtualDub, the 1st pass (fast mode) takes 15 min and the 2nd pass usually 30 mins. However with avi.NET both passes are done in 15 mins! I'm impressed and just curious as to what's going on in the background.
6) I would like an option for the preview window to not autoplay after loading the source file. I'm constantly right clicking and hitting pause immediately because I don't want to be spoiled by episodes I'm encoding that I haven't seen yet! :)
Thanks again for a great program, and I hope I'm not asking too many questions on my first post in this thread. :)
