Can you explain...

archaeo

I suggested this exact thing just in the past couple of weeks. We're thinking very, very similar on this !

Actually, the 'one step' rip from disc, encode, and burn to disc has been suggested earlier. It doesn't hurt to bring it up again :)

in shrink and nero Recode2, one can cut the beguining or the end credits thus decreasing the compression to be applied.

archaeo
7th February 2006, 18:21
If I understand correctly, in the Reauthor mode in DVDShrink, there's a tab that will allow you to set the start and end frames for the backup. It opens a preview screen. That way one can edit out end credits, or pre-movie warnings, etc... wherever you choose. It is handy for cutting out certain parts exactly where you want to.

@archaeo. RIGHT!, thanks for the help.

elizerrojas

as a quality freak that i am, i do main movie-only, i like to cut the end credits also. the less compression, the better results.

I Merged a couple of suggestion threads with this one, starting a post #147.

Originally those threads became redirects here, but then I renamed this thread and it seems to have renamed those redirects too, which is why there are 2 redirects with the same title pointing to this thread.

The status display in the lower left doesn't accurately show the job status. The progress bar will show 100% completion but the NAVPACKS will still be updating and that message about updating NAVPACKS remains when the job is totally complete. How about having the progress bar reset to 0 when the NAVPACK update starts and replacing the final "updating" text with a completion statement to match the log?

thanks for merging them, it makes it so much easier because everyone makes their own wish list. i made one simply because there isnt really "an official wish list" but i guess this forum will be great to explain improvements to this great piece of software.

i agree the one-step burn would be awesome.....

btw, i PMed fallen (fallenangel) to see if there would be a way to put source code into dvd-rb...... if i could have a little text box where I could input the title in DVD-RB (a dialog box of some sort) and it would use TitleWriter to write it as the main title of the movie, i would be so greatful. the less programs the better, and the problem is i often forget to do the titlewriter step, so DVD-RB rips it to DVD. I then have to go back to the DVDFILES, fix the VIDEO_TS.ifo, and recreate the iso and reburn. i have a 400-disc Sony by the way...

Fallen

Fast and Dirty if he has the Video_ts.ifo file

-- Have him run TW, use CLI (See CommandLineHelp)
Example c:\Titlewriter.exe /F C:\myvid\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO /V My Volumename /T1 My First Title Name

Alternate This Could be done Post DVDD Pre DVD_RB using a simple bat file if he doesn't strip that segment during processing

I didn't have any particular DVD to backup so I tried the new feature on Batman Begins, love the added menu feature by the way.;) Though, it would be nice to see the menu reduction level.:rolleyes:

jdobbs
9th February 2006, 20:32
Currently the menu reduction is always at the same level as the VTS is supports. So... if VTS_01 is encoding at 70.1% then the menu VTSM_01 will also be 70.1%

3. Add the ability to select a DVD from a DVD drive and click Backup. Have DVD-RB run DVD-Decrypter if it is on the system, rip it to a folder as in step 2 above, and have DVD-RB complete the process. If jdobbs fears implementing it (considering what happened to LIGHTNINGUK) then it could be an anonymous add-on or ini edit.

Also if DVD-Decrypter is not something jdobbs wants to get involved with, if DVD-RB can just "copy" non-protected DVD's like any other one-click solution, that would be awesome too! So the files would be just copied, (no decryption) onto the hard drive and then backed up. Users that want to back up protected DVD's (legally of course) have to use AnyDVD or DVD43.

My point basically is to make a 1-click backup solution with DVD-RB.

Also, I don't really understand why No Compression is only available for Full Movie. Sometimes I find DVDs that, when the extra titles are removed, are under the size of a DVD-5. So it seems like I shouldnt have to run CCE, yet, I do. Maybe in future versions there should be a way to blank titles and then backup the remaining Main Title (and any other selected VOBs) without compression.

jptheripper

@k2002rahmani - run anydvd in the background if you want rebuilder to be one click.

as for no compression, jdobbs has said he is working on an option for different encoders on different sections (including no compression)

k2002rahmani
13th February 2006, 03:30
thanks for the no compression info.

yes, i know i can run anydvd in the background, but i do not want to leave my dvd drive running as that can shorten the life, especially with something as hardware intensive as DVD-RB. copying would be much better.

I discovered that TitleWriter has a commandline option! I have attached the CommandLineHelp.txt file that comes with TitleWriter.

jdobbs: If you can just make either an ini edit or menu option where i can check "Use Titlewriter", supply the path to titlewriter, and then just a text box where i can type the Volume name. There is no need for any of the fancy menu editing or title editing.

i just have a sony jukebox-type 400-disc player, which is obviously logical for anyone here that makes many backups, and with no titles on the DVDs it is impossible to use, and having to use titlewriter independently is a pain. just a request for v1.10 maybe?

omg fallen i didnt even realize you posted! thanks a lot for that i just found it out!

BTW fallen and jdobbs: i only change the volume name and never touch the titles.....

also fallen is there a command to shorten the Title 9 to T9 as you have done in 2.5 beta? I have found many movies that have so many titles that TitleWriter can't process (too big for this proggie) and if DVD-RB could by default do that to abbreviate the default title names that would be good for eliminating errors.....

Now that menu encoding has been implemented, I'm crossing my fingers that PAL to NTSC conversion will be added soon. :)

I couple of things I would like to see added are:
1) On Help>Display Versions to also include the DVD-RB version
Example:
- Versions :
-- CCE SP Version: 2.70.2.4
-- HC Version: 0.16.0.1
-- DGDECODE Version: 1.4.5
-- AVISYNTH Version: 2.5.5.0
-- DVD-RB Version: Pro 1.08.1

2) Add a display details: Help>Display DVD-RB Details
Example:
-Mode: CCE
-Backup Mode: Full Backup
-Steal Space from Extras: 10%
-Options: Matrix Default
-Filter Editor: Undot().Deen()
-Settings: VBR Passes: 6
-Menu Encode: NA

Jdobbs, Thanks for the great work you've done!

also, sometime there is additional content on a DVD, such as JACKET_P (those that read know i have sony 400 disc, so they are important to me) and DVD-ROM content (which i dont care for). This would be something to add in addition to the copying feature, where DVD-RB copies a drive to a temp folder without decryption and end user must use anydvd....

Why else would I also ask for a DVD-RB Details log?

fallen: yeah i just noticed the new version 2.5! it will take some getting use to the new GUI, but i like it.

maybe next version a checkbox in the settings to choose startup either menu or dvd text, not necessary but would be nice for ppl that use only dvd text.

i dont keep track of my logs, but BobZhome brings up a good point, however, i think all of the versions should go to the rebuilder.log file. It will help when reporting errors to jdobbs to know what versions of what apps caused a specific error, even what version of DVD-RB.

I mentioned the following a while back and got a little bit of feedback or agreement on it, as I recall. Now that I search this "wish list" thread, I can't find my post about it though.... did it get lost in the merge ??

Anyway, when selecting the 'work' and 'destination' folders, the dialog box starts at "My Computer" and I have to drill down to the folders I want with multiple mouse clicks. Maybe I organize things more than others.... ??? :) I do this 'cause I might run RB on 1-3 DVDs in a day (or two) so I want each job to have it's own, logically named folder.

Since the setup asks me where my work and destination folders are, why doesn't it remember this when I want to change them and at least *start* from there. That, in fact, would be great for me !

I second hallway's suggestion, & propose another really minor UI quibble of my own -- something that should be pretty easy to implement. In "Settings | ISO Output Opts" and anywhere else that has textboxes, it would be nice if the contents of a textbox were automatically highlighted when the textbox gets focus. I know, a silly quibble, but it's just a suggestion. Saves like a half-second of effort (CTRL+A, holding Backspace, dragging mouse, or what have you) so the user can immediately begin typing new stuff into the box.

Thanks for the great work, jdobbs! really a gem of a program that you keep improving at an astounding speed!

k2002rahmani
4th March 2006, 23:45
I think the best solution to hallway's problem would be the semi-automatic paths option as I suggested in my post. That way finding the source, DVD-RB will automatically know where to put the Working and Destination folders.

For menu processing, you think it'd be possible to have a seperate option for replacing the videos in the scene selection windows (those videos that loops with their respective scenes) with an image from that loop. Just a thought.

I'm updating the Doom9 guide for DVD-RB and I thought I would add some wishes here. These aren't new features, but UI changes that I think would make the program easier to use.

Rename Mode menu to Project, layout as follows:

?One Click Mode
---------------------
Backup Mode (mode) ->
Steal Space from Extras (mode) ->
?Half-D1 Extras
?Half-D1 and Half Bitrate Extras
---------------------
?Enable Output Directory
?Create ISO file
ISO Options
---------------------
?Close DVD-RB at REBUILD completion
?Shutdown system at REBUILD completion

Encoder Selection is moved to the Settings menu, along with "Force Reencoding". "Suppress warning prompts" is moved to the setup page, since it is rarely changed, or possibly the file menu with the Status log items.

Settings menu:

Encoder ->
?Low Encoder Priority
?Mulitple Encoder Processes
?Enable Menu Encoding
--------------------
CCE Settings ->
QuEnc Settings ->
HC Encoder Settings ->
ProCoder Settings ->
---------------------
?Standard Target Size (DVD-5)
?Dual Layer Target Size (DVD-9)
--------------------
Setup

I'm not sure if "Special Error Processing" is needed any more. If so I think it belongs on the Project menu, since it may be needed for individual projects. Functionally speaking the Target Size options are a project setting too, but I think they are rarely changed enough that I think they could be considered a program setting.

The only other menu change would be to put "Set Background Color" back on the Skin menu, since I think it makes the most sense there.

Other changes:

I wish the folder icons at the top of the "Status Log" tab would open the appropriate selection dialog. I'm not sure if they 'should' given the Status Log page is more of an output window, but then the icon used there is also used to open those dialogs in the path selection tabs.

Added to the Input Settings tab:

Audio Remapping from Options placed at the bottom of the tree.

I would like to see Half-D1, 16:9 convert and Disable Interlace put there too, but I understand that they are "expert" options. And having "Disable Interlace" would definitely cause people to think they are deinterlacing. Still, personally I would like to see Half-D1 just because I use it all the time. Perhaps there can be an 'enable expert options" setting. Now where would I put that ....

It would be nice if the .installer would recognize the full existing configuration and set a default path to CCE and the commercial encoder configurations.

It would also be nice if the destination path was stickier, similar to the source path browse function.

I know that this has been brought up before and I have read most of the threads about it. They just don't seem give any particular insight from jdobbs whether it could be implimented or not. Anyway is there any chance of getting an LPCM --> AC3 or MP2 conversion in DVD-RB?

jdobbs, thank you very much for such a great program, it is one of the very best available!

jdobbs
29th March 2006, 21:28
AC3 encoding requires licensing. Good quality AC3 encoders, therefore, aren't cheap -- and the freeware ones that are "just for educational purposes" have some issues. MP2, on the other hand, has some really good freeware encoders -- but creating a disc without AC3 or LPCM would be non-compliant for NTSC discs.

That doesn't mean it will never happen -- but because it isn't much in demand and requires a lot of work, it isn't a priority.

Thanks for the kind words.

Cosmetic, I know, so ignore if too silly:

I use the default skin and find I am always scrolling left & right in the status log to read it in full.

Am I nuts or is there a way to make this bigger in this skin? (I know I can read the log in the working directory and usually do that)

well, ive run into an interesting problem. sometimes the default track for a DVD is DTS. I always keep the Dolby 6 channel (5.1). On Fight Club, doing so means that when I start the movie, there is no audio. Now of course, I know that it can be remapped with DVD-RB already. But I don't want to check for each DVD that it is mapped correctly, most are still done to Dolby, only once in a blue moon is it something else. SO... could it be done so that if the DEFAULT TRACK for the MAIN MOVIE is removed, that there is a warning, or that it is *even better* automatically remapped, maybe a dialog confirming this??? I LOVE YOU JDOBBS!

jdobbs
26th April 2006, 11:53
The problem is that there is no reliable way that I know of determining the "default"... it's usually the first track -- but not necessarily. It can be changed with pre/post commands. So you'd almost have to emulate disc playback in order to see which track is selected at the time the DVD starts.

If you've completed a rebuild and DTS is the default (which is exceptionally rare, by the way) -- you should be able to remap it and then just do a REBUILD phase to correct it.

...If you've completed a rebuild and DTS is the default (which is exceptionally rare, by the way)...Yes, that's right, in fact I have never seen such a beast.

I was very surprised to find that the "Cream Reunion" concert did not have a DolbyDigital 5.1 soundtrack, only DTS and stereo LPCM tracks, and even there the LPCM was the default.

BTW that disc inspired me finally to buy a DTS receiver! And the DTS track is awesome!

it would be nice if we could filter the items visible in the Preview/Edit pane. I'm mainly thinking of an option for hiding stills (not removing them from the disc when encoding, but just hiding them from view so I don't have to scroll thru them). the idea could be vastly expanded from there (e.g. sort by size or type [stills vs motion video]), but I don't know how useful such expansion would be.

Thanks for this fantastic program, donated very quickly! Just one gripe. When I am backing up several DVDs I go through the whole rippping, compressing and burning part then I delete the left overs from my computer.

Then when I start a new one in DVD-RB the folder which I have deleted is still there. Could you possible add something so when I press "Prepare" an option pops up asking if we want to create a folder for the "Working Part" if there isn't one already.

Also, the output path, maybe add another sub-dir in the main DVD folder (e.g. E:\jaws\[add the final here]\VIDEO_TS). I hope you understand this mumble jumble.
