View Full Version : segment viewer doesnt display video?

I have the opposite problem, but not with the segment viewer as some of you are experiencing. My problem is when I tried to view AVS file after Prepared with Windows Media Player 6.4, it says:
Unable to download an appropriate decompressor. (Error=80040200)
Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompresssor could be found. (Error=80040255)
Same for Media Player Classic. Then try VirtualDub, and it says "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'YV12' (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
What strange about this is I was able to view AVS before. There was no additional app installed, and I don't know what I did that cause this error. Maybe because I was playing different software players that change the priority of the codec?
Then I looked in the VirtualDub forum and was told that I need to install DivX or XviD codec for this. But I already have these codecs in my system. I look in GSpot, and see that YV12 (FourCC) is there, and under Vendor column "No codec needed". So I don't know why I can't view AVS. Anyways, I went ahead and installed the XviD codec (http://www.xvid.org/), and I'm able to view it now in WMP, MPC, and VirtualDub. I also verify that the segment viewer is still working after this installation.
Could this viewing problem has to do with certain codec or filter has higher precedence than the other? So when you install some app, for example, the new video codec is assigned a higher merit value than the previous one that DVD-RB is using.
I don't know if this could be the reason, but I find 2 filter managers that allow you to change the merit of Directshow filters and others as well:
Radlight filter manager (http://www.radlight.org/products/filter_manager/index.php)
DirectShow Filter Manager (http://www.softella.com/dsfm/index.en.htm)
I was looking in these tools to see if I can do it b4 installing the XviD codec, but I don't know what filter I should change to have higher merit, so I don't want to risk it. I thought maybe someone has a better idea of how to use it.

That sounds like AVISYNTH isn't installed... Run the DVD-RB installer... the MPEG stream is decoded by DGDECODE.DLL and fed to AVISYNTH....

It is installed -- v2.55. DGDecode.dll comes with the RB installer, and is in the RB folder, and is referenced in ini file.

Something is wrong... because if you install DVD-RB on a plain vanilla Windows XP computer it will run. You don't need any exotic codecs, etc.

I think you misunderstand me. I already have DivX and XviD codecs, so I can view avi files, long before I install DVD-RB the first time. After doing full installation of DVD-RB, I was still able to view AVS and segment viewer. So there was no problem then.
As mentioned above, somehow later on (with no additional installed apps) suddenly I can't view AVS but still can view segment viewer. That's why I'm puzzled. So reinstalling the XviD codec enables the AVS to be played again. And there's no problem with the segment viewer either, so no need for me to use MCI_LONG_NAME=1.
In any case, my problem is solved now. I was mentioning that maybe the priority of the codec or filter might have changed. Just like in TMPGEnc, VFAPI plug-in tab, where you can set the priority of certain decoder/reader if the program has problem decoding.

Just lost my preview capability sometime in the last couple of days. Came upon this thread and saw the workarounds regarding codecs.
What changed on my system? A codec pack. I uninstalled the XviD codec pack I had just installed and now it works again...

Oh... I see. It sounds like something is removing or replacing the MSYUV codec that is install with WinXP. Look at your video codecs list and make sure its still there. I have XVID installed on my computer and AVS/preview playback works.

I'm using Windows 2000. Yeah, I had a working XviD codec installed for quite a while, but then tried this other one for a video I couldn't get to play.

The preview in the segment editor is black for all items.
My versions are below:
- Versions :
-- Rebuilder: v1.25.0
-- ReJig Version: 0.5.0.5
-- QuEnc Version: 0.7.2.0
-- HC Version: 0.21.0.0
-- DGDECODE Version: 1.4.5
-- AVISYNTH: 2.5.6.0
I have read the previous posts on this issue but the suggestions did not work. I am running XP SP2.
I have tried uninstalling avisynth and RB and reinstalling RB fresh.
I have tried the MCI_LONG_NAME=1 in the rebuilder.ini file
Playing the current.avs in the RB directory in windows media player works.
The Rockas matrix editor program video preview works BTW.
I know this does not provide enough detail of my system to likey pinpoint the problem. If someone knows how I can provide better information (codecs, etc) let me know.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Cant be for sure but it's probably some sort of codec conflict. Do you have K-Lite codec pack installed? If so uninstall it, it has cause me all sorts of problems. Use http://www.cccp-project.net/ it provides everything you would need to play almost everything, plus you may want to download Insurgent from the same site and try and find some codecs you may not have known were there creating the problem.

Installed the cccp package. Still no playback.

Like I was saying make sure you dont have K-Lite or any part installed, and check any other codecs you may have installed. Whatever you uninstall make sure you delete the folder and clean the registry then reboot.

it's the Xvid codec that conflict with the segment viewer.. I have this problem to

I playback XviD using the FFDSHOW codec set. It doesn't conflict. Which one are you using?

I had the problem before installing K-lite codec pack and also after installing the K-lite codec pack. I currently have the K-lite codec pack uninstalled and the CCCP pack installed. Find attached the codecs installed as reported by the CCCP insurgent program. BTW I did uninstall Nero and check that as well. No change. What is odd (although previously reported) is that the Rockas matrix editor and windows media player do not have the problem. There must be some difference on how RB calls for the display.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I also use FFDSHOW but I have also Xvid Codec cause, some times I reEncode divX movies for my father dvd ,which can't playback hebrew subtitles. using AVI recomp (that uses Xvid codec) I embed the subs into the movie.

@johnnyquid
I'm really not sure as to why your having this problem the only 2 things in your setup that stand out is Nero and Virtual VCR. As for Nero, Do you have virtual drive installed? I seem to remember it having some sort of conflict with RB, but that was a while back and not sure if that would still be a problem. Only thing I can say is uninstall the two and clean the registry & reboot to see if it comes around. Did you ever have use of the segment viewer?

I have tried uninstalling Nero, Virtual VCR, and my wintv capture card programs. No virtual drive programs are installed. This does not help any. The segment viewer used to work but I do not remember which version worked. I did reinstall RB version 1.10.3 just to see if it makes a difference. It does not. As I can see the segments with Rockas's Matrix editor it is not a big deal but it would be nice if RB's preview would work.

disableing xvidvfw.dll (I used mmcompview to do this) got rid of problem of the segment editor viewer not working for me.

After unsinstalling obsolete divx/Xvid stuff the RB preview displays <Video not availble. Decompressed 'vids:YUY2' not found.> Reinstalling didn't help.
Current.avs etc. play correctly in MPC.
Any idea what could be wrong or missing?

Preview problem still persists.
Is anything special requested for the DVD-RB preview to function? Similar previews of other applications function properly on my system.

What program is dvdrb calling on to do the preview?
jdobbs
17th August 2007, 02:36
It is calling the inherent routines in the O/S via the Media Control Interface (MCI) using the Windows API -- so if it isn't working, the problem goes beyond just DVD-RB

I have no problems previewing avs files in Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic. Do you have any suggestions how I can solve this problem? Thx.

Does it rely on VfW components? I seem to have a problem there with a missing decompressor (which one?).

I too cannot get the preview to function.
Unfortunately, being a total novice, I cannot contribute to the thread apart from logging that preview is disfunctional.
jdobbs
17th August 2007, 13:03
I'll take a look at using another mechanism for display. But the reason I used the API was because I didn't want any dependencies beyond the operating system itself. In every case that I've seen so far where there was a problem -- it was caused by 3rd party packages replacing operating system components or codecs.
I hope you understand my hesitation in trying to fix a "problem" that is actually not truly related to DVD-RB at all.

Thanks jdobbs. Is anyone else using Vista that is having this problem?

The Preview is back to life in my case.
Difficult to say what has really cured it. I reinstalled the WfW components (only these) from the K-Lite codec pack including the unwanted DivX and Xvid - then removed the DivX and XviD codecs with the device manager and finally uninstalled the K-lite Codec pack. After rebooting the preview worked.
I have never been using the K-Lite pack before, so in my case it solved rather than generated the conflict.

i had the problem also and the ONLY thing i did was uninstall the k-lite codec pack and it worked even without the community pack installed. however i installed the community pack for the other codecs i needed.
running vista ultimate.
good luck to all who need it.

I was having the same problem...And I did a image of my PC
And uninstalled 1 program/codec after another....
And restored the PC to try again....
After many restores I found that only uninstalling Xvid 1.1 from my PC fixed the problem! Why I dont know? but that was the only codec thing I had to uninstall
Just if new users have the same problem...and dont want to read all 10 pages of posts (-;
I had the same problem. After uninstalling xvid, I was able to see the preview. I would like to keep xvid installed so I tried several different versions, but they all block the preview. Is there any way to run both DVD-RB & XVID codec?

My solution was simple....
Use VLC player to play every video AVI you have.....
Much better player than Windows media player...
VLC have their XVID codec implemented in the player...
I do xvid encoding, so I want to keep it installed

InstalledCodec is a handy freeware tool to quickly enable/disable codecs. I use it exactly for disabling the Xvid codec when using DVD-RB.
You may download from here:

You can also do xvid encoding using the codec contained in FFDSHOW, MENCODER, or FFMPEG. I've had no problem with any of those interfering. My guess is that it somehow interferes with standard YUV display, but that's just speculation. DVD-RB uses the standard windows media control interface (MCI) to display the video, it doesn't do anything out of the ordinary.

Interestingly I've got koepi's Xvid build installed (updated a few times) and never had a problem using the segment viewer. Windows XP sp2 system.

Same here with Koepi's build and XP SP2
I've only seen it on vista & windows server 2008 - always used Koepi's build in the past

My segment editor won't play, the scrollbar is just stuck miday way. I don't use any kind of codec pack. I used the linked program to detect what codecs I have to enable/disable. I don't have xvid or divx installed.
