Its a wonder that the author keeps making updates to this software with some of the responses I've seen in here...

Ok let me re-phrase my last request for help. Once a disk is opened and re-author is clicked a new start window appears ie: you have to re-open disk before re-author is available. I previously had ver2.3 and that opened a drag & drop window ver3b5 doesn't open this window. You can indefinitely open disk, click re-author, open disk and so on.
Ta!

Thanx mr e-Dealer I just assumed that re-author would work similar to that in v2.3. For some reason I cannot open help files in the v3b5 prog. Thanx again loads

Hello,

Is 66% compression too low? I know CCE should be used, but i dont have time to learn CCE.

Would 66% look really bad?

Im backing up There's Something About Mary.

DVDShrink is pretty fast. You can try 66% and see if you like the results. For me, even 60% often produces very good results.

In truth, I think it largely depends on the source, and I don't think the percentage is a terribly good gauge of final quality. I think the difference between the maximum compressibility and the ratio is a better guage.

In other words, click the ratio radio button and see how much of a bar you have. If the ratio is very close to maximum compression (very little bar showing), final quality will probably suck. If you have 1/3 or more bar, chances are the quality will be quite good. [remember to set it back to automatic after you've looked].

Hi guys,
Having a small problems with dvdshrink 3.0 Beta 5 have looked for some answers but can't seem to find anything.
The problem is that when I click on open disc it starts to analyze it and then stays at 0% then stops responding....
Im using xp home with a 2gig Athlon chip and 512mb on board..
Can any one shed some light on this problem of mine?.
Cheers

If I may make one point/request. When you mention 'compression percentages' - please clarify that it really is the 'compression' and not the 'quality'. Since ver3, the percentage has been reversed. 66% as reported by the program would mean that the movie is compressed 34%. If the program reports 34% 'quality', then that is 66% compression.

For really big movies, you can try the new DVD2DVD - check MrBass's site for a tutorial. It looks really easy but does require other software. I would give it a try if my hardware were up to it but it's not. CCE, Scenarist.

In any case I just backed up a movie with 55% quality (45% compression) and it looked good in my eyes.

And Dazz285, does the program hang or report any error messages? I run my beta5 on Home XP Pentium 4-M with 512mb RAM without any problems. I'm guessing it's software conflict. You can try to rip the movie to the HD using DVDDecrypter or SmartRipper and try from there. Btw, try giving more info about the movie, etc.

Is it me or does DVD Shrink hog 99% CPU. My system becomes very hot, practically up to the limit right before my software alerts me that the system is getting too hot. Any Ideas or could it be My cooling system. I have 2 case fans plus CPU Fan of coarse.

Get a more effective CPU fan.

Any CPU should be able to run 100% continuously without ever overheating (as long as you haven't overclocked it, of course).

If you bought the PC whole from a shop (as opposed to you building it yourself), then take it back and tell them it's not fit for its purpose, and demand that they install a fan & heatsink that is suitable for the CPU.

If you built it yourself, then I'd suggest here, www.overclock.co.uk (for UK), or www.quietpc.com (for worldwide), or http://www.below-0.net (for Oz), or www.case-mod.com (for US).

OVERHEATING !:D :D :D

I haven't heard this for a long time... But as FB said, it should not happen. Most likely the person who attached the fan on the CPU did not make sure the heatsink *touches* the CPU top. Or the fan does not spin at the right speed. Or the heat alert mechanism is giving fault positives... Even overclocked AMD (such as mine) can work at 99% for days/ever with no problem... ( albeit my feet get too warm from the hot breeze under the desk :D:D:D )

Hey Y'all

Ripped a dozen movies with good results, so far. :p
Played them on my Pioneer standalone and the video was better than I expected. Could not tell the difference, from my point of view.
Most were compressed 48% to 55%.
Those that I re-authored had no problems that I have found.
Just waiting for the final release to come out.
Do not use anything but DVD Shrink, for all my backups.
Thanks Dude for a wonderful piece of work. If you ever accept donations, I would be happy to give.:D

It's your system. No way you should be overheating. I leave my system on all the time. Used Shrink countless times and never overheated.

It would be nice, however, for DVDShrink to put in a process priority level selection in the options part of the program

Here's an interesting bug I found..

When you use DVDShrink (beta 5 is the first 3.0 I tried) to compress the video, it gives you the option to remove audio/video tracks that you don't want via a simple checkmark.

The thing is, it works great! the VOB files don't have it there, but the IFO file still had the option there.. so when you play the disc in PowerDVD, you can switch to those other languages, except nothing plays!

I think its a bug since it should work like IFOEdit.. where when you remove the audio/subtitles.. it should not be selectable.

yes this has been pointed out before, it is a known bug...

I was trying to do "Bulletproof Monk", and wanted to use CCE for the main movie and DVDShrink for the extras. So I used DVDShrink to shrink the extras to a minimum and keep the main movie as it is, i.e "no compression". I assumed that by select the "no compression" option for the main movie, DVDShrink just leave the main movie VTS as it is and just copy the files accross. However, the process took much longer than what I expected and the size of the main movie VTS files is about 1Gig smaller than the original.
Does anyone experience the same problem? and is it a bug with DVDShrink or am I doing something wrong? I haven't try using the ratio bar and slide it up to 100% to see what that option does yet, but I read in a few post in this thread that if I want to not compress the main movie, I have to select the "no compression" radio button.

Maybe the VTS's you are talking about also contain some extras?
