OK, new filter with lacing problem fixed is up

http://www.matroska.org/announce.html

Its version 0.4.2

If you still have problems with vorbis audio, that may be because of a flaw in Tobias' OggDS how to handle show timestamps ...we are investigating how to solve this ... stay tuned !

No audio and MP3 audio play flawlessly. Vorbis is a little "sluggish," but I quickly stop noticing when watching. Great work! Thanks.

XviD + AAC file made by MKVMERGE 0.4.1 was played nicely in MPC.
with MKxDS.dll 0.4.2 and 3ivx D4 4.0.4 DirectShow Audio Filter.

Seeking is decent in a short clip, while it is not so comfortable in a longer clip.

XviD+AAC in MKV nicely--which means, basically: "MP4 container is useless anymore!" isnt it?

I don't think MP4 will be useless anytime soon :)
I wonder if the same files are smaller in MKV than in MP4, BTW.

I don't have long movies in matroska yet. I may try this to speed seeking in long file.

I wouldnt think so, dont forget MP4 is very good for streaming and an industry standard already. But i can see a situation where MP4 users transmux their stuff into matroska, even only contemporary, to be able to make use of MKVs enhanced editing capabilities from VdubMod, and then maybe transmux to MP4 again after editing is finished ...

And maybe use some codecs or matroska features unsupported elswehere. MP4 will be good for proven hardware support.

Sure, "useless" is exaggeration, actually when I typed it, I was thinking secretly "Hmm...but hardware support is something."
But someday there might be hardware support for Ogg Vorbis / Matroska etc. as in Ayaka's dream-inspiring pic (http://www.faireal.net/matroska/Ayaka/mkv_dvd_02.png).

Plus, isn't MKV streamable?

Personally, to me, mp4 was mildly interesting because I can use AAC as audio. As for interoperability, mp4 is not so practical as claimed at least now on Windows (ie. QT6/Mpegable/MP4IP/envivo etc.). altho mp4 should be promising in theory, I dont want to pay for it when I have free containers like Ogg and Matroska.

Note: of course i m talking about mp4 format as a container,
not as a codec algorithm family.

That reminds me, we will need to do a poll soon and decide on a logo. If anyone has any comments on those three potential logos in the above picture, please feel free to post them.

I still got jerky playback problem, even with the latest 0.4.2,
xvid + .aac or with .ogg or with .mp3 mux with mkvmerge 0.4.1,
played with MPC 6.4.5.0, ffdshow build 05-23-2003, win2k sp3,
athlon xp 1700+, ge-force2 mx200.

seeking seems problematic with long clips. :(
on a 1 hour long clip (xvid+vorbis) it works well enough in first minutes, but the far i seek in the timeline the longer it takes to resync: video plays faster with no audio for some minutes, then audio starts to play while video stops and in the end it plays normal.

Seeking is crappy and should be implemented properly before any other feater kicks in IMHO! :)

Even at the beggining of the file ?
If so could you cut it to have only the beggining and post it somewhere ? This way I can test it here and see where the pb is.

You can PM me for the link if you need.

PS: The pb with Vorbis is known and seemed to be caused by the Vorbis filter, not the matroska one.

@ robUx4

Yes it plays jerky at the beginning of the file but it isn't as strong as when I jump to the middle or end of it. But the one I tested has indeed Vorbis audio. Do you need it nevertheless?

If that's only with Vorbis, no. What muxing tool did you use ?

I'll add in a note... Jerky playback on XviD video, creating using basic direct stream copy in VDM. Audio is VBR MP3. However, it's a soft jerky playback, as if one out of every 5-10 frames was dropped. Also, if the file is stopped and restarted the jerkyness goes away. Very repeatable, and only happens with XviD. DivX is fine. Using ffdshow for playback filter, but whether I use that or not doesn't seem to affect anything.

System is Athlon XP 2100, nForce2 motherboard, 1GB RAM, Win2K/SP3.

I haven't tried it with other audio formats yet but I'll test it with MP3 tomorrow.
The file was also created with VDM (direct stream copy).

My problem was VirtualDubMod related. I tested it today with VirtualDubMod_CVS_20030604 and jerky playback was gone.
Great work!

Hmm....This is the only VDM version that creates working matroska files on my system. All matroska files which were created by the "original" VDM 1.5.1.1a had jerky playback.

Are there any non-VDM GUIs that are verified to create non-jerky Matroska files on your system, Assault?

Assault
6th June 2003, 17:22
@ Defiler
I tested mkvmerge and it worked too. But the overhead of the matroska file was big. VDM produced a file 696 mb big and the mkvmerge file had 702 mb, so I prefer VDM.

New matroska DShow parser available from the Downloads page (http://matroska.sourceforge.net/downloads/downloads.html).

This new filter is adding

- CoreVorbis (http://corevorbis.corecodec.org) support
- EDIT : Added Aspec ratio correction in every DShow Mediaplyer now, in conjunction with latest FFdshow-alpha (http://sf.net/projects/ffdshow) from 23rd May !!!! All you have to do is to activate 'use overlay mixer' in the 'codecs' setup page of FFDshow.
- DTS support ( untested ; muxing with either next VirtualdubMod or mkvmerger since 0.4.2 )
- Support for the new subtitles mediatypes, for working UTF8 subs playback in DVobSub ( Gabest is late, bug him to update it :D .. lol )

Important :

This new filter will be necessary to be able to play files created with next VirtualdubMod and mkvmerger release. The old filters may have difficulties recognizing the number of video/audio tracks correctly, with new files. Old files are still 100% supported and spec compliant, we just added a new EBML element to make handling of framerate easier for Cyrius and Mosu, and the old filters may have a problem with the new element.

Important 2 :

While this new filter works fine for one half of the team, its having problems for the 2nd half ;) . We have no idea why, so dont delete you v0.4.2 installer yet ;) ....

Gabest, [...] He will be working on a muxer filter also he said, that way capturing into mkv files on DirectShow via WDM drivers was possible.
initial release was announced here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54560&perpage=20&pagenumber=5), last version now is 1.0.0.3

So, finally, everybody making MKV files with UTF8 subs in VdubMod or mkvmerge can see them, and in correct UTF8 language ;) ....

Copy .dll to your system or system32 folder and register it with regsvr32. It's replacement for DVobSub . Actualy it is DVobSub,Avisynth filter,VDub filter. I've just test it with new MatroskaSplitter (from Gabest ofcourse) and it works with MPC6.4.5.4 without any problems except it shows square at the end of first line if sub have to lines of text. I don't know is it problem with DVobSub or VDubMod when I created mkv (UTF8).

(1) successfully muxed 2 SRTs, one in Japanese, the other in Finnish.
it does play fine. i can switch 2 subs by just clicking the popup menu and i can see Japanese and Finnish correctly.

ppl in W. Europe might say "You could do that w OGM"
but NO! this is not possible w OGM if 2 languages belong to different Code Pages. (You can switch, say, English and French easily in OGM, because they happen to belong to the same Code Page.)
This is really cool. This is exactly what I wanted to do.

(2) I confirmed that I can put Finnish and Japanese in one line.
This is impossible w OGM even tho you set the Code Page/font settings manually.

Multilanguage note (http://ld-anime.faireal.net/guide/matroska)

P.S. Release Rizelmine 23 and 24 plz thx. :D

Now, to bring this post back on topic.. While I don't run Win9x myself.. I support a lot of people who do. Many of them are having difficulty unregistering the Win9x version of 0.4.2. "regsvr32 /u mkxds.dll" just hangs.
Anyone else seen that phenomenon?

If it hangs trying to unregister it: Reboot, copy the new file over the old file, then re-register.

Sorry to interrupt the subtitle-happiness, but i'd like to draw attention back to jerky playback: My mkv with vorbis played back fine with the mkxds.dll that came with CoreVorbis. Since this mkxds.dll seems to be unable to play mkv-file muxed with the 10/06/03 vdubmod, I downloaded the 0.4.3 mkxds.dll and registered it, and now my movies play jerky again!
Btw. it doesn't matter if the mkvs are muxed with old or new vdubmod, the play jerky.
I created a 245kb 3s clip that shows it very obvios, I can mail it to everyone interested.

[Toff]
11th June 2003, 13:59
Could you check that your graph use CoreVorbis please ?
The 0.4.3 filter can also connect to Tobias filter, so you maybe need to update you CoreVorbis filter which now use a higher priority.

Why is it nobody explains things for the people who are not 'heavily' interested in the devlopment side.

I did not know ANYTHING about the CoreVorbis project or the MatroskaSplitter project.

I now have working MKV with multiple audio streams and NO jerking!

If someone had pointed this out a little earlier it would have helped :)

Mind you I can see that this only appeared in the last week or so. ;)
