does anybody besides me have a problem with jerky playback (probabely not decoded b-frames)?

And, i get screen tearing. Doesn't it use overlay?

on my system mplayer uses reasonable amounts of cpu depending on the clip res etc.

i had some problems with jerkyness as well. i think, it is due to cpu-usage, since not decoded bframes usually show up and tall "b-frame decoder lag / missing b-frame" or somethink like it. cpu is anyway at its limit, wich should surely will be solveable in the near future. under linux i can play mpeg4 any size with a pentiumII 233. mplayer decoding will not use different decoding-techniques under windows.

My cpu usage is around 60-70%. So, I don't think this is the problem.

sure, i'll get together the links that i got for the "codec packs" and put together a few instructions tonight after i get back from college. rv9 playback is rather nice with mplayer. i'm also going to try to compile my own executable later on as well and see how that goes.

Rv9 playback works for me too. However, smils do not seem to work.
The tearing/banding prob surfaces int rv9 and xvd content.

@kilg0r3,

hmm, sorry then..
is your screen refresh-rate any multiple of your video fps?

since mplayer is no frontend for directshow as most of the other players, it should actually be very independent from all those a/v syncing and stuttering problems direct show introduced, but who knows, maybe there are similar problems with it under windows.
but i might be wrong here..

here is the url to get the rv9 codecs for mplayer

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/~alex/codecs/rp9win32codecs.tar.bz2
get the above file and the windows version of mplayer from the start of the this thread, either one will do.

then decompress the files from rp9win32codecs.tar.bz2, then move these files to "codecs/" which is in the same directory that the mplayer.exe executable is. its a pretty simple process. then mplayer will then play be able to play rv9 files.

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/~alex/codecs/index.html
has a few other codecs for mplayer (some of the linux versions of the codecs dont work for the windows version of mplayer)

(also www.7-zip.org the program here can decompress .bz2 compressed files for those who are having problems decompressing these files)

just a quick update regarding quicktime.
the current mplayer-win32 seems to have some problems with playing quicktime files of newer versions (v5/6). but i was able to play the matrix-reloaded QT trailer without video (only sound). you have to download the qt files from the experimental codecs page, and put them in windows\system32. it's an anomality, since it SHOULD have worked when put into mplayer\codecs dir, but it currently doesn't. the windows\system32 is a workaround untill they fix it.

they should make a win32 port like the macport which really is brilliant!

so with a nice standard gui and all of that...

ah and rv9 doesnt work for me.. copied the files to codecs/ but no success...

ah and rv9 doesnt work for me.. copied the files to codecs/ but no success... you did extract the files (twice, once for bz2 and once for tar) and then put the files from INSIDE directory rpXwin32codecs into mplayer\codecs right? it did work for me.

rv9 works with the second player posted(smaller than the first, compiled with different compiler i think),does not work with the first player posted. At least not for me,but i didn't try putting the actual rv9 folder in the codecs folder though.

Does win32 mplayer support Matroska?

ah great.. this works now.... now only a nice gui is missing and dvd support (or is it compiled with it?) at least for me when typing "mplayer -dvd 1" it says this:

-dvd N is deprecated, use dvd://N instead.

dont understand this really "mplayer -dvd://1 says wrong option

i dont think dvd and vcd support is built into the win32 version, i think tv support is disabled as well. it would be interesting to find out what configure options was used to build the mingw32 compiled version of mplayer. i've given it a quick go at compiling it in mingw32 under windows, and i have been getting lots and lots of errors (a recent cvs checkout was used)

i played both VCD and SVCD successfully with the version from the 1st post of this thread (without any additional downloads). i still think it should play dvd, reading several posts on the mailing list. but dvd seems to have some problems with some versions of win98. didn't test though.

sweet :D mplayer and rv9 together!

try rename the file extention to something like *.mpl and associate it to mplayer.exe. Double click on the files and presto.

This version is compiled with Cpu runtime detection, it doesn't detect my cpu right. I can't play anything with this version. Then i try to play clip all i see is few seconds some mess and after that it closes.

Best Linux player but this version doesn't work for me.

Ok did some more testing and that older build worked but it uses 100% cpu time and playback is VERY jerky, get somenthing like 10-15 fps. It claims my system is too slow but i have 950 Duron and Linux version works great. Tried various drivers and settings but no luck.

Anyway nice to see Win version of this great player :)

1.)
Isn't there a way to override cpu detection?

2.) @Anybody with jerky playback not due to cpu usage

Try inserting a line 'autosync=100' in the config file. This suggestion is from Sascha, and, it worked for me.

Finally, i can actually use mplayer :) !

3.)
I have been browsing the docs for some time now but couldn't find a way to switch audio streams during playback. Any suggestions?

there's a new version from 2003-05-27 (only mplayer.exe), and it plays the matrix reloaded qt trailer out of the box! file size: 3.1M (or 1M with upx, but you'll have to compress it yourself). no osd with this version. did i mention it playes the matrix reloaded qt trailer? ;)

nice

ps.
it doesn't play mkv...

some more good news. the new builds (all builds except for the one on the 1st post of this thread) can display the osd and progressbar, but not out of the box, at least for me.

i've downloaded MSYS (http://mingw.org/msys.shtml)(2.8M), which is the Minimalist SYStem for mingw (minimalist gnu gcc compiler for win32), and it just sets up the unix paths correctly, such that mplayer is able to find the fonts (apperantly that's what caused it not to display the osd).

in my case, i had to copy the mplayer directory (the one with codecs.conf and other conf files in it) to <msysInstallDir>\1.0\bin\%USERPROFILE% and then mplayer will work correctly. the %USERPROFILE% (literally) directory is created after you run mplayer for the 1st time from inside MSYS.

2 tips:

1. the default config file had 5 configs inside it (vo, autosync, ao, quiet, framedrop), i disabled all but autosync, and this way the files play smoother on my pc.

2. the default terminal opened by msys is rxvt, which displayed the text with absurdly wide spaces between chars (prob a bug). you can change msys.bat and remove the font option for rxvt, or just rename rxvt.exe to something else, and sh.exe will be used instead in a normal text window.

cheers

lol, there's a much simpler solution, not involving MSYS.

inside the directory of mplayer.exe, create a directory %USERPROFILE% (literally) and copy the mplayer directory (with the config files in it) into %USERPROFILE%. it's apperantly a bug with mplayer/win32 since %USERPROFILE% should have pointed to "c:\Documents and settings\<userID>" but it's somehow interpreted literally. tip #1 from above still applies.

another thing, you can create a shortcut to mplayer.exe on your desktop, and drag the files onto it, will be the same as dragging the files streight onto mplayer.exe. you can also put this shortcut inside the "Send to" directory, and this way play files directly. it's also working for a group of files, which are then played in a sequence (i.e. an mp3 album, or 2-cd-rip movie, etc).

I can't see anything like this but i am using Win98se

I don't have any problems with osd but if i follow your intructions osd is gone. So it might be just WinXP problem.

Is the normal cvs used(linux version) or....
Are there some other packages required....

Some info would be great.

Thnx

I'm guessing from the "pre" that they just released a pre-beta gui for it :\
WHICH IS AWESOME
except.. I was almost finished this..

I was only making it so the person I'm sending some AMVs to would be able to watch them even if she (inevitably) screwed up the installation of ffdshow, but still. It's the principle :? or something.

just some experience:

MPlayer dev-CVS-030816-12:54-3.2.3
os: win xp
(file is some sort of divx 5.x)

using from cli:
mplayer shrek.avi -sub shrek.sub -fs -subcp cp1250

- decoder seems to work rather fine (i just need to learn how to disable post-processing filters?), there are ocassional lines traveling down the picture, but not really annoying. the card is 'matrox etv450'.

- subs are annoying, they blink, they are soft and the char table is wrong. (using slovenian chars in the sub file)

SUB: Detected subtitle file format: subrip

anyway; great stuff all the way, i hope this player (iam only interested in cli version) will get ported as it deserves

edit: mkay, this fixed the wrong char issue, i copied the font to the same dir as movie is and the new line is:
mplayer shrek.avi -sub shrek.sub -fs -subcp cp1250 -font subfont.ttf
