View Full Version : mplayer (ported from linux) available for win32: stand alone (no codecs needed)
mplayer ( http://www.mplayerhq.hu ) is one of the best video players for linux.
now you can try it on win32 (beta). MANY codecs (audio/video) are built in, so it's great as a reference player. very handy.
get it from ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/mplayer-cvs-2003-03-24.zip
it's about 6M but also includes mencoder as a bonus...
(at the same directory there's also a more recent version, marked as 'dev' without mencoder, but when i tried it, i couldn't get OSD, which is important for ff/rw when there's no gui).
to play a clip, just drag-n-drop it onto the mplayer executable or run from the command line: mplayer <clip_name>.
mplayer does have GUI and skins, but these are not included in the basic package. i didn't try using skins on win32 (on linux i managed the task quite easily). so we're talking command line app here. (if you try and have success, posting your experience here would be nice).
here are some shortcut keys for controlling the playback:
(you can find these and many command line options at ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/mplayer.html )
<- and ->
seek backward/forward 10 seconds
up and down
seek backward/forward 1 minute
pgup and pgdown
seek backward/forward 10 minutes
< and >
backward/forward in playlist
HOME and END
go to next/previous playtree entry in the parent list
INS and DEL
go to next/previous alternative source (asx playlist only)
p / SPACE
pause movie (any key unpauses)
q / ESC
stop playing and quit
+ and -
adjust audio delay by +/- 0.1 second
/ and *
decrease/increase volume
9 and 0
decrease/increase volume
m
mute sound
f
toggle fullscreen
w and e
decrease/increase panscan range
o
toggle between OSD states: none / seek / seek+timer
d
toggle frame dropping
v
toggle subtitle visibility
j
switch subtitle language
z and x
adjust subtitle delay by +/- 0.1 second
r and t
adjust subtitle position
i
set EDL mark
enjoy and keep handy ;)
Wow, amazing. Thats all I can say. I never thought this would happen since mplayer devs are so anti redhat not to mention windows ;). mplayer is in my opinion the best player on the planet so it is sweet that we can now enjoy this beauty in a windows environment.
EDIT: Just as a side note. Imagine how nice this will be to put this onto a cd and have it autoplay. No need to install any codecs. Perfect to give to your friends who may not know too much about this video encoding. Only problem is that it is a little big, but you wouldn't need mencoder I guess. Just one more thing, I wonder if it supports matroska since the mplayer plugin was added to the cvs. Time to find out I guess. :D
I compiled the simple gui for users who may not like the command line, I don't think it is available as an exe on the ftp. Just put it in the same directory. Now time to see if I can make some of those nice new skins work.
Did you attach this GUI? I'm just asking, because if so, then it hasn't been aproved for 6 hours (I don't mean to push anyone, I know that the mods have a life outside this forum).
What about your matroska tests? I won't be home for the weekend, so I won't be able to test it myself, still I would be very interested in this feature.
Best regards,
JimiK
the compiled GUI (i didn't see the attachment either, but i compiled it myself. sources are at the same directory as the download) is very naive, partially broken imho, and doesn't give something the shortcut keys i mentioned on my 1st post can't do.
if you wanna try it, just memorize:
ESC: quit
space: pause (toggle)
f: full screen (toggle)
0,9: volume
+,-: adjust audio delay by 0.1 sec
right/left : ff/rw 10 sec
up/down: ff/rw 1 min
PgUp/PgDn: ff/rw 10 mins
and give it a try. the current win32 gui does more harm than good atm imho. otoh, mplayer skins are something to look for (they give the full GUI as it was ment to be). so again, any experience with skins on win32 will be a welcome addition to this thread.
@avih, if it does more harm than good I can just remove it. I am not sure why all the buttons don't work but it seemed to compile ok. Probably most people would just memorize all the buttons anyway so it may be useless.
@JimiK, I will test for matroska support and post back. :)
EDIT: Matroska doesn't seem to work, I know there is support for it if you checkout from the cvs and build it, but there is no support for it in 0.9. I am not sure when mosu added support for it but maybe 2003 03 24 isn't recent enough.

@JimiK, I will test for matroska support and post back. :) it's ok to stay online, although obviously u've encountered the same problems as me ;) i'll try to make the skins work. don't hold your breath though...

ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/mingw32-dev-CVS-030422.zip (from 2003-04-22)
after a short test (for the version i posted in the 1st post here), it seems the version is compiled WITHOUT gui support. that means no skins for this version. i didn't check the other (and later) version since it doesn't have OSD, as i mentioned.
on the good side though, the version i tested supports VCD/SVCD/AVI/OGM out of the box, which is pretty cool imho. i think it should also work for DVD, but i didn't test that. it does NOT seems to support XCD.
avih, that is what I assumed too that it was not compiled with gui support, I tried for about 1hr to get it to work but it wouldn't. So, I also tried the later one too and it didn't work either.

I'll try the codec pack. actually, under the directory 'old', you'll be able to find mingw compiled versions (not so old at all btw), that are only 1M. and 850K with upx. worked for me, but it doesn't have osd when searching through the clip.
on my movies, it uses 100% of cpu too, is "normal"?
in a xp2000 , using low or hi resolutions movies in window mode..
with xvid and mp3..

But it uses 100% CPU on a 2000+. How does it perform on a 500 or 300 MHz?
Same here, uses 100% cpu on my 1900+. I guess we need some kind of optimisation or the like to improve this.
i've gotten mplayer for windows to work with RV9 :) and some old quicktime clips but not quicktime 5/6 encoded stuff (i dont know why the streams arent recognised)
but to get RV9 working you need to go the experimental codecs page, and download the RV9 codecs for win32 (the linux version doesnt work for windows) decompress and place in your codecs directory and it should work.
so far i've had good experiences with the windows version, its almost as polished as its *nix counterpart, apart from the odd errors here and there.

try "Mplayer -pp 0 videofilename.avi", this turns of postprocessing, it only uses ~50% cpu time on my oc'd 1.8ghz p4 (running at 2.4ghz)

has anyone tried ace media player? it is an amazing little prog that plays quicktime, real, and anything directshow (anything media player can play -- divx, ogm, m2v, ac3, etc.). it has great commandline support -- so far it is undocumented but i can elaborate if needed. it can fit on a cd play fullscreen when inserted. it requires that the proper codecs are installed (and real and quicktime must be installed for the capability to play those filetypes). but it gives you a common interface from which to play pretty much anything without the bloat of the native players. the capability to play apple and real will cost $20 but there is a free version (ace divx player) that plays everything other than real and apple. he is currently working on a skinning engine that could serve well as the backbone of every htpc. anyway, it is a little known software and it is a good value, so check it out.

That'd be great.
2.
Made it! It seems that what caused 100% cpu on other machines prevented mine to play it all together. Now I tried it with '-vo directx' commandline option. Now it works using about 50% cpu :D.
the file is an ogm encoded with 05042003-1 koepi, two vorbis streams, and muxed srt subtitles
- However, playback is a little jerky :( (b-frames are not decoded?)

ace media player and ace divx player have the following commandline parameters:
-a add new files to the end of the playlist
-x replace the playlist with the new files
-m mix the new files into the current playlist
-r randomize the new files before inserting them into the playlist
-f fullscreen
-n add the new files to be played next after the currently playing file (finally a true jukebox behavior!)
for example:
amplayer.exe -a "e:\music"
would place every playable format in e:\music at the end of the current playlist
amplayer.exe -a -r "e:\music"
would randomize the playable contents of e:\music and place them at the end of the playlist
amplayer.exe -n -r "e:\music"
would randomize the contents e:\music and insert them into the playlist after the currently playing title. this would act like a jukebox.
etc. etc.

in the *nix version you can setup a cache by adding the switch "-cache 8192" etc... perhaps you should try that in the windows version.
the documentation is there for how to use mplayer, most of its probably the same except for the -vo and -ao switches on windows.

im not too sure then, it probably needs a recompile. i'd love to muck around with this more but since i got exams soon, it'll have to wait :) it could be you graphics card thats giving you hassle as well, since its using directx, im getting perfect playback on my mchine, even with pp turned on to 4, i still get only about 70% cpu usage on my machine. Always uses 100% CPU, even with "-vo null" (No video output). So it has to be the decoder.
edit:
uses 100% CPU with "-vo null -nosound"
Benchmark: 95.5% CPU-Time seems to be used by the Kernel. Strange result for a p3-1GHz.

finally!
does anybody know how to set mplayer up to play my movies when i doubleclick on them?
i used the filetypes-dialog of windows to point avis to mplayer, but when i double-click on a file containing spaces in the filename, windows passes all "strings" of the name after another and uses the spaces as a separation.
so "my movie" passes "my" and then "movie" to the player.
Hi, I would like to write a remote control plugin for my remote
is faking keyboard shortcut the best way to go?
are there any window messages or IPCs that I can use to control mplayer?

I also tried to play a movie with mplayer on a pIII 800
and it worked. Mplayer runned at 100% but the movie played without hassle. I didn't had time to use the -vo directx option.
On my AMD Xp 2200+ I also have 100%.
I find it very strage.
Is the source of this mplayer for windows the same as the source for the linux version? Can I find info about this mplayer version on the original mplayer site? (I searched but couldn't find it).
It's realy nice to see this program in windows. If the 100% bug gets fixed I'll use it as standard player.
Thnx
Mille
on my Duron 800 (XP-Pro) i get about 70-80 % cpu regardless of whether i use or don't use '-vo directx' and/or '-pp 0'. clip resolution: 512x384. codecs: divx3.11 (nandub), mp3.

i've gotten mplayer for windows to work with RV9 :) and some old quicktime clips but not quicktime 5/6 encoded stuff (i dont know why the streams arent recognised)
but to get RV9 working you need to go the experimental codecs page, and download the RV9 codecs for win32 (the linux version doesnt work for windows) decompress and place in your codecs directory and it should work.
so far i've had good experiences with the windows version, its almost as polished as its *nix counterpart, apart from the odd errors here and there. That's great news.
could u pls give detailed instructions?
(exact file name that you downladed, exact location/names of the directories you created locally (absolute paths please), etc)
thanks
