The unpredictable behaviour of DVD2DVD-R with NTSC DVD's makes it necessary for me to revise the steps I use:

Tools:
DVD Decrypter 3.1.6.0
DVD2DVD-R 1.49
pulldownmod.exe (renamed to pulldown.exe)
CCE Basic 2.67.01.11
Bitrate Viewer 1.5.054
ImgTools 1.0.0.4 with Nero 5.5.10.20 API
PowerDVD XP 4.0
Windows XP SP1 NTFS
DVR-105 Burner
Ritek 4X media

REVISED STEPS For NTSC Backups:

(1) Rip the full movie with DVD Decrypter in file mode.
(2) Analyze the 2nd vob and 4th vob with Bitrate Viewer and write down the settings.
(3) Use ONLY settings you wrote down and change the DVD2DVD-R MPEG Encoder options(even if it differs from the DVD2DVD-R prediction)
(4) Click Go.
(5) Play in PowerDVD (Step Forward T) in frame by frame and compare to original.
(6) Repeat steps 3 through 5 except also select Force Film and 2:3 pulldown.
(7) Decide which version to burn** (pulldowned version or non-pulldowned version). Burn both if you want to compare quality in step nine. However, You can always go back and burn the version you decided against.
(8) Burn.
(9) Play in multiple standalone DVD players to evaluate.
(10) Find an audience to watch it.

With this method, in my opinion, usually one of the two disks end up excellent with a folder size ranging from 4.34-4.36gb. I am only using this method on Movie Only backups with Movies 6.0+ gb. For movies under that size I have all the other "one click" programs to use.

** jzaman's law: If the original VOB's (MPEG Encoder settings) do not match the backup VOB's (MPEG Encoder Settings) then use a transcoder program to do the job. Cut your losses. Reduce your coasters.

I debated whether to post this question at the risk of looking like an idiot. Looked in mirror, too late, debate over. :)

What BITRATE settings should I use for CCE in DVD2DVD-R. ie - how do I determin what numbers to use. Is it different for each movie or is there a standard setting ?

I understand about using Bitrate Viewer, and checking a couple of .vob's and getting the info to make the other settings such as -

Field topfirst: Yes
DCT type: Field
Quantscale: Linear
Scan type: ZigZag
Frame type: Interlaced

But I have read thread after thread and guide after guide (actually not many guides for DVD2DVD-R) searching for this BITRATE info.

Do I get the bitrate settings from what Bitrate Viewer tells me ?

(I am a PAL user)

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Artur,

I also noticed that there is now a mrbass guide (http://www.mrbass.org/dvd2dvdr/) for this program that is the starting point I was looking for as a beginner.

Cheers....
