These little bugs are mostly just annoyances in the install and uninstall process and do not affect the functionality of the programs. However, it would be nice to get it right.
I am running Windows 2000 Pro.
First of all, after installation, Gordian Knot does not appear on the list of programs in Add/Remove Programs. This could be fixed merely by an entry in the Windows Registry, and it should be fixed for consistency.
Also, it seems the uninstall program simply delete the programs and the program folder, without touching the registry keys. I assume this is to preserve user settings in case of a reinstall. And there is a "Delete Registry Keys" button in the Options tab, which restores default settings. It works fine, although a bit unusual since uninstall is supposed to clean up the registry as well.
On the other hand, "Huffyuv AVI lossless video codec (Remove Only)" appears in Add/Remove Programs, but remove doesn't work due to a invalid UninstallString.
Lastly, all the Start Menu items are installed only for the user who did the install, i.e. Administrator in my case. It's probably preferable to make it available for All Users by default instead.
Thanks again.

These are not bugs. Bugs prevent a program to work correctly as it should be (this is how I chose the installers to work).

At the beginning I have done it like that but then I thought that it is better to be only as a link, because after all it does the same job and it doesn’t mess a lot with windows.
When you press the button “Delete Registry Keys” and close GKnot then the registry keys have been deleted and not replaced by the defaults. I believe that the most people will find it annoying to uninstall GKnot to install a newer version and see that all their settings have gone. After all you can delete them manually.
On the other hand, "Huffyuv AVI lossless video codec (Remove Only)" appears in Add/Remove Programs, but remove doesn't work due to a invalid UninstallString.
Huffyuv AVI lossless video codec indeed has problem with uninstallation. This is a problem which can’t be fixed because the installation of the codec is made by the creator of the codec.
Lastly, all the Start Menu items are installed only for the user who did the install, i.e. Administrator in my case. It's probably preferable to make it available for All Users by default instead.
You are right about that. I never thought about it. From now on the Start Menu items will be available for All Users if the user who is doing the installation has privileges on the other accounts. This will be applied in the next GKnot release.

Is it possible to do 3 or more passes with DVX5.4 ? I can't seem to find how to set this up.

@BiaTch 5.0
Sure you can ! :p
go to encoder, press add job, check divx 5
You have "First Pass" button, "Nth pass" button, and "Number of passes" from 2 to 6.
But have you latest divx 5.03beta fully registered ?

Sorry, my mistake. I meant "features". ;-)
At the beginning I have done it like that but then I thought that it is better to be only as a link, because after all it does the same job and it doesn’t mess a lot with windows.
Fair enough. It's just that I thought it's a good idea to keep it consistent with standard Windows behaviour, since GKnot "messes" with the registry anyway.
When you press the button “Delete Registry Keys” and close GKnot then the registry keys have been deleted and not replaced by the defaults. I believe that the most people will find it annoying to uninstall GKnot to install a newer version and see that all their settings have gone. After all you can delete them manually.
Understood. I just thought that was unusual too. But if you really want to avoid messing with the Windows registry, which I think is an admirable goal, user settings could be saved in a simple text configuration file, and the user has the choice of keeping or deleting it at the time of uninstall.
Huffyuv AVI lossless video codec indeed has problem with uninstallation. This is a problem which can’t be fixed because the installation of the codec is made by the creator of the codec.
No problem. Just pointing that out.
You are right about that. I never thought about it. From now on the Start Menu items will be available for All Users if the user who is doing the installation has privileges on the other accounts. This will be applied in the next GKnot release.
Thank you very much. Looking forward to the final release.

(speaking of Xvid)
hope this wasn't emntioned before, but some people tend to do the 1st pass, shutdown the computer. Now the restart the computer but can't add a Xvid 2nd pass to the encodeing queue.
Multipass, only adds 1st pass
same for First pass
and Nth pass wants an DivX4-log-File
Would be nice to be able to add a second pass to the encoding queue on it's own ;)

Ps.: Problem came up in a german forum.

I bet if you open final avi in VdubMod you'll see warning "improper VBR header detected"...
Since option to ignore VBR headers cannot be enforced in the script, I'd better switch to nandub for splitting (will do for the final version).

The auto split feature is working really really great (in beta4 only)!!! Why don't you make GKNOT to also autosplit the .sub files??? I believe it is simple.. The comand line usage of vobsub cutter is:
rundll32 vobsub.dll,Cutter <src> <dst> <countfromstart> <hh1:mm1:ss1:ms1> [<hh2:mm2:ss2:ms2>]
(but i'm sure you olready know that...)
Can you make the autosplit to make the 2ed cd to start approximately 10 sec before the end of cd1??

I also installed Gknot rip pack and beta 3. I have a few questions/comments:
1) When opening a huffyuv-avi (yuy2) the preview doesn't show anything? I really appreciate if you could look at this.
Some less important stuff:
2) The one pass is greyed out, could you enable this?
3) Is Nandub used when encoding/muxing the audio? Because I can't encode/mux the audio without installing Nandub. Isn't it better to use VdubMod for this?
4) About the deinterlace options, could you add a standard option:
Telecide()
for correcting swapped fields/phase shifts. I guess this is not important for dvd's, but for captures it is often used.
Sorry, if any of this is changed in beta 4.

My knowledge in this area (AVI2AVI) is a bit limited. Can this be realted to Avisynth ? (may be you can post sample of avi file here, so we can have a look. All samples of avi that I tried opening with GK were fine...)

I think this was disabled since 0.27 (There were no 1-pass mode for a while). It'll be back after 0.28...

Nandub is used only for divx3 encoding. All other modes (divx5, xvid, muxing & splitting) are performed by vdubmod...
So you have any errors when nandub is not present ?

:) Deinterlacing becomes the most confusing part on save avs window :)
I'm not sure if I can fit in one more option unless I split it into two columns (like I did with resizing method)...

I will post a short sample (after eastern).

Yes, I only see the audio muxing/encoding disabled (I'm not behind my own comp, so I don't know the exact options) check, when Nandub is not installed. The other (about) four options are not present.

Oh, ok. If it is not to much work :) But if you don't do it, it's also fine.

I'm not convinced that this is usefull. Some ppl want this, some not, some want 15 sec, some 2-3 keyframes, some want manual adjustment - the number of options is huge. It's not worth making everybody happy with this feature (yet) :)

I've seen some discussion about Nandub/VirtualDubMod here, and my experience is: When I use GKnot 0.28 (not the LATEST version, I haven't tested that yet) and VirtualDubMod muxes the audio, it will be delayed with approx 120 ms. This will not happen if I mux with Nandub.
I am talking about encoding from avi here, not from DVD.
Question: I see that there is a whole new rip pack now from april 19. What do I need to use the latest 0.28 version of GKnot?

Nope. It doesn't work with 0.27 either. I think it only happens with XviD encodes that have bframes enabled. But it is annoying because I can load the same file in the "Nandub files" tab with the "Open" button.

See, loading takes into account snip size of the comp test. So only stats files generated by comp test can be loaded this way...
In fact "load" means "load comp test results", not "load first pass"...

Hi.
A suggestion about differents bitrates used for movie and credits.
Could you code a credit option that, when selected and filled, tell people the new bitrate for the movie? Of course if you use Gknot to do all the encoding stuff this option is useless as it recalculate itself the correct bitrate. But people using Gknot only to make a quick AVS and encode the stuff manually with VirtualDub would enjoy such an option. :)
I would! :)
You can get this information by letting Gknot to encode the credits and then you hit "abort". In the job area it will then write the new bitrate for the movie. Then you hit abort again to stop the movie encoding. Yes we can do that but it's not very fine, you'll agree, and should be great to have a new box in the bitrate tab for example that would allow us to fill it and read directly what we need.
Anyway whatever you decide, thanks for all. :)

Hi guys i got this little problem...
i ripped a movie to XViD+OGG,now when GK finishes the job and mux the video with the ogg, nandub just crashes with vorbis.dll error, but when i try to mux the two with oggmux,it works fine, any idea why?
I was a way while it was ripping, when i came back the movie rip was finished but when i opened the file it gave me an error of libmplayer.dll,so thats why i had to use the oggmux program to mux them again, btw with oggmux the final file size was much more accurate then the GK calculation (GK had an error of -3MB while oggmux had just the requested file size).

=====================
known problems:
audio-bitrates below 128 (in lame) can cause sync-problems (and sound terrible), because lame is automatically
downsampling to 32 or even 22kHz. i highly recommend to use 128 or 160 and nothing else. to avoid downsampling you
have to add "--resample 48" to your lame commandline options if you encode at low bitrates. also downsampling to 44.1
with BeSweet and ssrc should be no problem.
=====================
I guess BeSweet still has this problem probably...

I find giving sound on old movies higher bitrates than 96 to be overkill, it's better to give as much bitrate as possible to the video, or ....?
