Well, I did it again this time with the navigation pack box checked and not the correct ifo box checked. The movie also played correctly on windvd, no t skipping any scenes. But when I tried burning it, I got the error but chose continue anyway because it is an RW and thought what could it hurt, but it won't play, nor will it recognize the dvd to erase it so it ruined a blank dvdrw. Anyway, the question is now what to do? If I have the correct ifo box checked, the movie gets changed some how skipping scenes. If I uncheck it, the movie plays correctly, but can't be burned to a dvd disc correctly.

Good question...simple answer: I don't know...you obviously played a lot more with this than me...I can't help you at the moment, I'm afraid...try DVDSplit, maybe?

Ok, seems that Nero is in fact the problem with burning some movies. It won't burn A Walk to Remember without giving error messeges. But I just made an image with winiso and loaded it in daemon tools and it played fine on that. So the question is then, what to burn with if Nero fails. Maybe the other movies may be ok too that others have said they have had problems with, like Matrix and American Beauty. I've read in some posts to try Prassi PrimoDVD, I may give that a try. If anyone has any other suggestions for burning please let us know! I'm sure Kate & Leopold will work now too once I figure out a new way to burn.
My guess is if windvd can play the folder, then the standalone should be able to too. But if anyone notices otherwise let me know. That's what I've noticed from my personal experience.

Update: I'm going to try burning the ISO first with DVDDecryptor, will let you know if it works.
Update 2: It worked. Will post my reply in another post!

Ok, a breakthrough! :D A Walk to Remember wouldn't burn with Nero. Kept getting the file reallocation error. And removed the 1 end sector like always too. I did a search, and I found a thread that said to use imgtools .89 to make an img file and then to burn with dvd decryptor. It worked!!

So, my theory still stands that if Windvd can play the folder, so can the standalone.

If you get an error with Nero, try making an image with Imgtools .89 and then burning with DVD Decryptor.

Yee Haw! I'm happy again! If anyone else tried this, please post your findings!:D

Figuring out how to use Imgtools was a pain. I'll include the instructions. Credit goes to framerman. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42428&highlight=imgtools+wont+open

to create an image file in imgtools:

you need to have your VIDEO_TS folder under the root drive, i.e. c:\, with NOTHING in the folder except your vob's, ifo's, and bup's.

click on create dvd image

dvd drive should be c:\

output image file is "movie".img

volume title is YOUR_MOVIE

click create image. It'll take about 5 or 10 minutes or so.

Open up dvd decrypter.

Click mode\iso\write.

Unless I'm in a hurry, I select 1x to reduce my playback problems.

I burn my discs this way all the time and have had 100% success.

I hope this helps.

I always been using that imgtools 0.89/dvddecrypter method :-) just used nero for testing, but I never had a dvd, I could not get Nero to accept...

BTW: One more thing, did you ever try the new DVDToolbox (http://www.dvdtoolbox.de/) for splitting? Maybe on some problem titles? I didn't get to it yet...

Josh

Yeah, I did try the DVDToolbox for Kate & Leopold, but not A Walk to Remember. For Kate & Leopold I got the same movie playback problem.

@Chibi Jasmin

Just try it !

In germany the program is quite often used ...
It's well tested and quite very stable !

And we made this english homepage for you guys :D

Next release will include a "disc change request" at
the end of the first disc and a "the end"-logo at
the end of the 2nd disc. The logos will be (later)
user editable. Now there will be 2 or 3 different
logos you can choose from.

I will test it, as soon as I find the time...would you mind explaining, what it does better than DVDSplit/IFOEdit? You can see what work I had to do to the split discs after splitting with one of these in this thread...anything DVDToolbox makes easier? Already thanx for developing the tool...

Hey, just thought I would let you know that in order to split Jurrasic Park, I had to make 2 dummy files, and it worked! The other files needed to get the menu and movie to work (other than the normal small sets) were VTS_03_1.VOB and VTS_03_2.VOB. (both contained some bonus materials). But both of those files were 1 GB each and would put both disc 1 and 2 over the limit. So I just made 2 new blank text documents, and renamed them to those files and put them in there and that allowed the menus and movie to work. Just thought I would pass that on for others to try if the other files needed to be added made the disc size too big.

Update: Dumby files did not work on standalone. Have to strip only the movie, then split the stripped movie to 2 discs. Couldn't find a way to get it to have the menu screen, just movie only.

Josh

Gosh, after burning several movies successfully the last few ones sure have been a headache!
I thought I had figured out Jurrasic Park, it played fine on the computer, but when it was made into an image or burned something in it changed.
So, what I did. I stripped the movie only with ifoedit. Then I split the movie with ifoedit. Movie only. Nero burned it fine, no problems. But for some reason I couldn't get it to work with the menu and extras.
Does imgtools change anything with the movie when it makes it into an image? I can't figure out what happened. Something has to have changed or windvd should have been able to play it off the dvd as well. Maybe I should have tried a data udf dvd orsomething?

Josh,

It is possible that a titleset other than your movie's, must be present on both disks. When selecting buttons in menus, you need to watch your status window in your DVDPlay Panel to know where your current viewing is located at.

Josh
8th March 2003, 08:02
Thanks, I'll need to learn that. I'll get there eventually. I didn't edit or modify any menus, just copied them.

Josh
8th March 2003, 08:23
Maybe I should make that point clear with my last movie. If you can't split a movie with menus and extras, try stripping the movie only with ifoedit first, then try splitting that. That seems to work. You'll get the movie only, but it's better than nothing.

Josh
8th March 2003, 08:33
Ok, here's an update to how some movies can/or must be burned from what I have observed.

1.Some movies you can split and burn with not adding anything else (for movie only).
2.Some movies you can split and add only the extras you want and be ok.
3.Some split movies you need to add all of the other files on the same disc to get any of the extras to work.
4.Some split movies you need to add some of the other small files to make the menu and movie work.
5.Some movies you need to change the start precommand on the discs or they won't play.
6. Some movies you have to strip the movie only first, then split it. No extras or menus can be added (to my limited knowledge).

I think that Nero is trying to be too smart for it's own good when you try to burn using the Video option. It's trying to verify Video format, whether you have VOB_01 or not, etc. etc. etc. The reason for this is because it's trying to make sure that any HOMEMADE movies will be correct, and play in a standalone player.

The simple solution to all this, is to play the movie in IfoEdit. If everything works there, just burn the sucker. Burn it on a RW to test it, and if that plays, burn it to a R.

BUT, use the DATA option in Nero. That way Nero won't try to verify that every little nitpick thing is correct with the video files.

Since it's just data files on a DVD anyway, it burns fine.

I think this will do away with having to add dummy files, subtracting 1 from the end sector, etc. etc. etc.

I suggest that if you are trying to please Nero with the Video option and jumping through all of Nero's hoops, you burn a movie with the Data option and see what you get.....

Just remember, that if it plays in IfoEdit, it's going to play in your DVD player.

I've never had any problems with a DVD that I burned with the DATA option. All menu's, features, etc play just dandy in my standalone......................z

@Josh: Instead of creating simple dummy files, I still suggest stripping some vobids out of the original files to make them smaller! Might solve some problems...explained it above somewhere.

Josh
8th March 2003, 21:10
Ok, will try that. Thanks!

Josh
8th March 2003, 21:39
As I don't know how to edit the menus to use new
VOBIDs, I currently recomment, stripping either all (relevant, not the unplayable small ones)
VOBIDs of a vob or if you strip only some, strip consecutive and don't leave any in between
or after (for example, you have vob ids 1-9. You can strip 1-9 -> fine, you can strip 2-9 ->
fine, you can strip 3-9 fine and so on...you can NOT strip (without affecting the menu):
1-4 leaving 5-9 (5-9 then gets 1-5 and menu is screwed)!

Hey Chibi, you lost me on that part. Can you please explain that? I don't understand what you shouldn't strip. Thanks!

You have to understand that IFOEdit renumbers VOBIDs on stripping and therefore the menu gets screwed.

So you can strip everything that does not change the VOBIDs of the parts you are leaving.

Let's say you have VOBIDs 1 to x.

If you rip any VOBID y (1 <= y <= x) you have to rip all following VOBIDs after VOBID y.

An example:

You have VOBIDs 1,2,3,4.

You rip VOBID 4 only, no problem, all VOBIDs stay, just VOBID 4 won't work anymore.

You rip VOBID 3-4, no problem, just VOBID 3-4 deleted.

You rip VOBID 3 only, then VOBID 4 becomes VOBID3 and something in the menu is screwed (you have to select the button relating to VOBID3 to get the former VOBID4, now VOBID3). -> BAD

So you can't just rip any VOBID out of the middle, without deleting all following ones without risking to screw up the menu. Of course this depends on the menu structure and the specific case...if you strip as I said, VOBIDs won't be renumbered and you should be on the safe side concerning the DVD structure...let me know, if it works!

I just tested splitting a movie where the movie alone stripped would fit on 1 disc, and it worked! The menu and movie all there! Some menus are cool and are nice to have. The movie and results I did are here. :

And yet, here is another possible method for ripping movies. In this case, movies with 2 versions of the movie on it with 2 different vob sets. The movie was Toy Story 2, I couldn't get it to work with the extras. So I did a search and came across this link, and it's the only thing that has played in windvd when leaving on the extras. SoujiroTheTenken gets credit for this discovery.

It basically says delete the other movie version's VOB files, but leave the ifo and bup files for navigation purposes. Seems to work.

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25445&highlight=toystory

Update- This method should be tested more, it may be an easy way to backup some movies. BTW, it had to be burned with imgtools and dvd decryptor, and plays fine in the standalone, extras and all.

Nero HAS to burn it if you choose Data mode. I don't know why everyone is going to image files, burning in DVD Video mode, etc. etc.

I move the VIDEO_TS folder across, make an AUDIO_TS folder and move that one across, and burn it. I've never had one that wouldn't read in my standalone.

Nero can take it's reallocation errors and shove them where the sun don't shine..........You won't get them if you just burn the 2 folders as 'Data'. Choose the 'Burn without multisession' option.....z

The key part in your reply is "my standalone". If everyone in this whole world had "your" standalone DVD player, we wouldn't have a forum on DVD burning.;) But alas, it is not so. As as much as I want to do a "data" DVD movie, my Sony DVP-S300 refuses to recognize it and the same goes for DVDRWs.:(

Though I rarely do images, I do what I need to do to make me and my standalone happy.:D

Yeah, I'm sure that works, but the nice thing about making an image is that you can load the .img file in daemon tools and find out if it plays first with windvd. Not necessary, just an extra precaution I like to take.

So is it true that it's not correct to copy ALL extra menu files (VTS_XY_0.*) onto the 2 disc VIDEO_TS directories, but it is enough to divide them between the two discs VIDEO_TS folders?

Josh
25th March 2003, 16:33
I'm not sure I follow you but, sometimes you can have just some of the other filesets and not all of them. I like to be safe though and add all other filesets and delete the vob files for the extras if they won't fit.

zardiw

You only need to copy the files that you will need on each disc. See here for an explanation:

I have finally been able to split my videos into two different discs. I followed the Doom9 guide as well as the AfterDawn guide but none of the two really worked. I would get all the way up to burning with Nero and it would give me the "file allocation error". I never proceeded after that for fear of creating too many coasters. I already have enough of them anyways. Chibi Jasmin and Josh many thanks for your -1 trick. It seems to solve the problem. I was able to succesfully back-up Lord of the Rings - Twin Towers and am currently working on he Shawshank Redemption.

IfoEdit does a really good jobe of creating all the necessary .vob,.ifo, .buf files that you need. You don't really have to copy anything else that ifoedit doesn't already create with Disc 1 and Disc 2.

Just my two cents, this trick works.
