Yeah, I didn't try leaving the angles in with Kate & Leopold, I thought it would make the movie come out funky. Or did you remove an angle in ifoedit for Get Over It, or did you just check and see if the angle option was there?
Also, were you able to split the disc normally with ifoedit, with menus and all?

No, I did the split with DVDSplit. Checking if the angle option was greyed out in 0.95 or 0.91 was just for my information...I did not remove anything...I just ripped the full dvd and split with DVDSplit...I did not try with IFOEdit, but I think splitting with IFOEdit NOT removing any angle would have worked the same...

Ok, I don't want to get too far off the topic, and I can delete this post if we want to keep the Split DVD option clean in this thread.

Anyway, for Kate & Leopold, in ifoedit .95 it had the option to do seamless branching with the angle option greyed out.
In ifoedit .91, it had the angle option available now, but the seamless branching option was greyed out. What's the deal with that?

Dang, what I probably should have done though was to rip the movie normally with dvd decryptor (not doing angle 1 only), and then trying the seamless branching option and see if that works.

Try IFOedit versions 0.94 and 0.932,if you can find it.

Getting back to the splitting to 2 disc topic, here's a new program out called toolbox. I haven't tried it yet, but thought I should pass it on. Looks pretty cool.

Here are my findings with the different versions of ifoedit:
.91 Has angles but not seamless branching
.932 Has angles but not seamless branching
.94 Has seamless branching but not angles
.95 Has seamless branching but not angles

On a personal note, either one seems easy enough to use. I tested them with Kate & Leopold and assume it is the same for all movies. It's pretty easy to work around though. If you use the ones that the angles work on, you can just deselect the VOBIDs for the 2nd title. And vice versa, if you choose a version that can do seamless branching, you can just deselect the VOBIDs that have the multiangles (which appear to be fewer to deselect).

Hope that info is useful to some. I haven't found a version that can do both the angles and seamless branching for some reason, but that's not too difficult to work around.

Always check the command it has for disc 1 for the start of the movie! I've had a couple of split movies- disc 1 (the movie where I discovered this just now was the Count of Monte Cristo) not playing after I burned them. For some reason ifoedit had some funky command in there that actually did come off the original. After I fixed that 1 pre command the movie was fixed.
I think to be on the safe side, make sure it is always set on
JumpSS_VMGM Jump to Videomanager Menu and put Title-Menu in the box below it. That's the main menu on the dvd.
So if you split a dvd and disc 1 isn't playing check the command there.
To do this, open VIDEO_TS.ifo directory with IFOEDIT.

Click VMGM_MAT toward the top.

Then press the + next to it and highlight FIRST PLAY PGC.

Scroll to 000000f4 and right click and edit command.

One more update. I just split my first movie (Return to Me) where the main title wasn't in VTS_01. It was in VTS_02. The split movie would not work until I copied over the VTS_01 stuff to the folders as well. So Doom9's guide was right that those needed to be copied over if the main title wasn't in VTS_01. I just didn't understand it in the guide I suppose. Hope that helps some people who may have been having problems like myself. :)

Update: That is an odd movie. I can't make it to do the main title menu at the begining, or enytime for that matter. The movie still plays, but the main menu isn't there. I see it's in the VTS_02, the same as the movie. That's interesting. Any ideas?

Update 2: Ah, I've found it. The menu was also in VTS_03. I had that on disc 2 because I thought it was some bonus material. After copying it to disc 1 also and getting vts sectors on disc 1's VIDEO_TS the menu is working fine. So I guess if there's doubt, copy what you can to both folders.

What happends if you don't change the total number of chapters in the VIDEO_TS.IFO file? If I leave this alone or change it, it doesn't seem to make a difference running through PowerDVD. The menu's seem to work ok.

Well now I'm having a problem. When I split my DVD with IFOedit .95 and try to make an img file with imgtools it says immediately that it's done and makes a very small file. What's wrong? When I do the same thing with IFO .91 and copy the menu's manually it works fine.

I've also tried burning with recordnow DX and it always gives me an error. What does everyone else use (besides NERO :) )

Josh
23rd February 2003, 16:55
I use only Nero. I don't know why you're getting that small file thing though, sorry. Well, do you have it set to 1GB? And also have checked the box for create subfolders disc 1 and 2? As far as making the image file goes, I use winiso (when I made them before). Do you make an image so you can test the file and see if it plays, or for burning? I ask because you really don't need one and it just takes more time. If you have windvd you can change the source to dvd from folder and test it that way without having to make an image and testing it with daemon tools. Hope that helps, that's what I do now.
Just curious about the error when you burn, are you removing 1 end sector in the disc1 main title? That seemed to fix all of our burning errors no matter which program we burn with. Instructions are on the 1st page of this thread if you need to know how to remove 1 end sector.

Ok, I've found the answer to Kate & Leopold, and I think every movie with problems. Here's the answer. I think it will work with every movie. It works!
1.Copy all the files normally with DVD Decryptor.
2.Split movie normally with ifoedit.
3.Copy over all other extras, the small stuff copy to both folders.
4.Get VTS Sectors.
That's it, that's the secret. Something else in those other files has the key to getting it to work right. Don't ask me what, I don't know.
I didn't have to mess with any angles or seamless branching, because it's the full movie with all options (except some extras on disc 2). I'm more than happy to make a guide with pictures. I think it works with every movie. It had the full menu with Kate & Leopold, as well as both chains or versions of the movie. This also worked on The Count of Monte Cristo. Without something else in those other files it wouldn't work.

Update: Did not work. Some scenes were skipped in the movie.

(BTW, when splitting movies with 2 versions or PGCs, put the split point around the middle of PGC1)
Update: It got both versions of movie on there, but the extras don't play for some reason. At least the movie works though.

Always try the simple approach first :D Sounds so easy...glad, you got it now...

Yup, thanks Chibi! I also just found how to get all the bonus materials to work too. Instead of splitting at PGC 1 at the middle of the chain around 1:03, I split it at 1:16, which made disc 1 at 4GB and 2 at like 2.84GB. Then copy all of the other files to disc 2, get VTS sectors. For some reason those bonus materials can't be split up but have to be all together to work. The small files still go to disc 1 too to get the menu and movie to work.

Josh

Here is my conclusion from what I have learned with splitting discs. It looks like there are 5 possible different things you can do/or may have to do. It's really pretty easy to do, but some movies you have to give some minor tweaks after the discs are split to get them to play and to get the bonus materials.
The ripping is always the same as well as doing the vob extras as outlined in our guide. The guide on the link to afterdawn on page 1 is probably the easiest to follow for newbies.
You have to remove 1 end sector on disc 1 to every movie you split to correct the movie for burning and playback.
You should add all other small files to both discs to ensure menus work and that the movie plays. Always do Get VTS sectors after adding the files on the Video_TS file only.

1.Some movies you can split and burn with not adding anything else (for movie only).
2.Some movies you can split and add only the extras you want and be ok.
3.Some split movies you need to add all of the other files on the same disc to get any of the extras to work.
4.Some split movies you need to add some of the other small files to make the menu and movie work.
5.Some movies you need to change the start precommand on the discs or they won't play.

You shouldn't need to rip or strip streams or angles or seamless branching, and if you do it might mess up some movies.
For movies with seamless branching or 2 versions of a movie, put the split point on the 1st PGC, I recommend between .5-.75 into the movie, try to get disc 1 as close to 4.0 GB possible and try to add all extras to disc 2 to ensure that the extras will work (if you want the extras), sometimes you need all the other files to make the extras work.
Hope that can be of help to others! :)
Also, when splitting movies with seamless branching or movies with 2 versions on it, both versions should still work too on both discs.

Update, I haven't personally split successfully a movie with more than 1 PGC without playback problems. Error on my part.

Yeah, that seems to be it...I am still curious how to replace an extra vob (let's say some making of or whatever, no menu), with just a short dummy vob, leaving the structure of the dvd intact, just in case it's ever needed...

BTW: What happens on your standalone with your problematic title (Kate & Leopold), if you don't remove angles/seamless branching and put only one half of the main movie on one disc without menu?

And one more: Do you have problems on your standalone selecting chapters from the chapter menu that don't exist anymore? If yes, one could think of disabling the buttons to the non-existing chapters...

I don't really think you need any dummy files at all. Sometiimes you just need to copy over the other small files and that fixes everything.

No problems at all with Kate & Leopold (except for a pause where the layer break point is). The menu is actually on both discs too so you can choose still which version you want to watch (origianl or director's cut). You just have to change the precommand on disc 2 to go to the video manager menu. It's all there.

As for the chapters, I haven't had any problems. Sometimes if you click on something that isn't there or on the other disc, it goes to my dvd player setup. That's no big deal though, I know what is on the discs and just don't use those menu buttons. I've thought about disabling menu buttons but haven't played with it.

The reason I am asking is, copying everything over except some big VTS_XX_1.VOBs will probably not be accepted by Nero...maybe it doesn't matter, but to be safe, I'd prefer having a dummy VTS_XX_1.VOB...and instead of just putting an empty file there, I'd like to have some short 'deleted' clip or whatever, that is properly linked to the dvd structure in place of the original one!

I don't have any problems. See either your chapter pages (cells)reside in a program chain or they're located individually in their own VOB-ID. Disabling chapter pages in separate VOB-IDs are easy to do. Just to do a delete playback on them or edit a Jump to PGC command. As for the cell types, you can edit them out in the Cell Playback section. Just replace them with the last working cell number. Just like I do it in my guide. I was going to write a guide on my method of picking the right split point according your chapter pages but am bogged down with other stuff to do.

What you need to keep in mind is, the lesser chapters on a page, the closer and easier is it for you to split closer to centerline. But for movies with four to six chapters per page, I would have to put 2/3 of the movie on one disk and 1/3 plus the extras on the other.

If I had to disable a chapter, out of four, on a menu page, then I would find the title command in IFOedit and do some edits to jump back to the PGC-Menu cell that the chapter in question is on. It's better to show in a guide than just explain it on this matter.

All,

First, I want to let everybody know that I am a DVD newbie (although I am not a PC/software newbie). I have read everything in this tread very carefully. I am trying to split "The Matrix". DVD 2 works fine on my standalone. DVD 1 does not. I use IFOEdit 0.95 and Nero 5.5.9.17. I have read that 0.95 has fixed the -1 problem. If I do -1 fix, Nero still reports the relocation problem. If I do not do -1 fix, Nero reports it anyway.
I have ignored it (with -1 fixed done) and the standalone did not play the dvd. I did not try to ignore it without -1 fix done. Any ideas?

Thank you.

Welcome, and hang in there! It sounds like the problem is with removing the 1 end sector. You only need to reduce the very last address/cell by 1, not all of them. Make sure you're loading the ifo that has the main movie in it too, usually VTS_01_0.ifo, but not always. Also make sure you're clicking on VTS_C_ADT and not VTSM_C_ADT. I think most people accidentally choose that one by mistake. You may need to resplit it too and start over if something is changed that shouldn't be.
1.Open VTS_0x_0.ifo from Disk 1 folder where x is the TITLESET (usually x=1.) Do this with IFOEDIT.
2.Click on VTS_C_ADT (usually 2nd from the bottom).
3.Scroll all the way to the bottom and right click next to END SECTOR and reduce the value by 1.
4.Click save and resave it over the VTS_0x_0.ifo you opened. It will ask if you want to overwrite. Press Yes, then OK.
Hope that helps, let us know.

Josh,

First, thank you for express reply. I will do my best to write exactly what I did.

1. I ripped The Matrix using DVD Decrypter.
2. I started IFOEdit 0.95, loaded VTS_02_0.IFO
3. I ran “VOB Extras/Split to 2 DVD-Rs”
4. I did not change default options except the destination folders.
5. I changed the splitting point to Ch 15. I want all extras to be on disk 1, so
I reduced the size of the first part.
6. I let IFOEdit split the VTS_02_x.VOB
7. When it was done. I copied all VTS_01*.* and VTS_03*.* files to
“Disk1” folder.
8. I ran IFOEdit and loaded VTS_02_0.IFO. I made sure that I select
VTS_C_ADT. I scrolled down to the last cell number (81 to be accurate).I have also loaded the original VTS_02_0.IFO and compare the number of cell 81. The original was different, smaller for one. I changed the number in the split one and saved it.
9. I loaded every IFO file (VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_02_0.IFO, VTS_03_0.IFO) and did “Remove P-UP” and “Get VTS sectors”. I saved everything again. I did not do “Region Free” because the DVD Decrypter already did it.
10. I started “Nero” and created new DVD Video. I dragged all files from “Disk1” to Nero’s VIDEO_TS folder. I clicked “burn” button and got the relocation error.

Should I do Get VTS Sectors first and then -1 fix? Is the order important? Did anybody split “The Matrix” successfully?

Thank you.

Gasha

Really? I remember I had some probs, will have to try again sometime, will let you know...just to be sure we're talking about the same thing:

You say, we can put split a movie to 2 discs and put the full menu and extras on both discs, just leaving out any big VTS_XX_1.VOB with whatever extra content? And Nero will burn it?

UPDATE

I tried this with an already readily burned split disc, I deleted a vts_XX_1.vob with only some extra stuff, and nero complaned with reallocation error...I always had this behaviour, that's why I came up with the create new ifo thing for the disc witout the extras in the first place.

If this weren't a problem, I could always put the menu on both discs, just leaving out extra videos on one of them...(except for some cases, where menu and video content are in the same vob)

Josh

Yeah, I think I wasn't on the same page. Were you talking about what we talked about before, the whole movie on 1 disc and the extras on disc 2? And that Nero complained when there was no actual movie on disc 2, thus the need of dumby files? I haven't tested that yet. If that's what you meant, thanks for testing it for us!

I have not personally tested the Matrix. I doubt this makes a difference, but I only load the VIDEO_TS_IFO and do Get VTS sectors on that one only. I don't do the other ifos. I don't do remove p-up or anything else. I don't know if order does make a difference either, but I reduce the 1 end sector first, save and overwrite, close ifoedit, reopen ifoedit, and then open VIDEO_VTS.ifo and get VTS Sectors and save and overwrite as well. Then, I copy over all of the other small files to both discs- by complete sets of the ifos (like vts_02-vts_04 only for example. In your case maybe vts_03-vts_06). Did you copy over any of the other small complete sets?
I believe we have only gotten that error from Nero when we didn't remove the 1 end sector, and when we didn't have the actual movie on the disc, a disc with only extras (if I followed Jasmin correctly).

Jasmin, can you offer any insight or suggestions? I'll have to try the Matrix and see what happens, I have yet found a movie that didn't work following our guide.

Just curious, did your vob extras options match the same one in the first picture on Doom9's guide on the link below? Those same boxes should be checked.

Nero complains (among some other things), about not having a VTS_XX_1.VOB, if there are VTS_XX_0.VOB,IFO,BUP! I wanted to replace the VTS_XX_1.VOB with some short dummy movie saying 'DELETED from this disc', keeping the rest of the disc intact. This way I could simply copy over all extras and menus to both discs and just replace the big extras on one of them for space reasons.

Simply deleting the VTS_XX_1.VOB is not an option for Nero, maybe it would work, if I burn anyway, but I'd rather take a short 'deleted' clip, if this is not too much work!

That simply deleting is not accepted by Nero (and that it requires a VTS_01 titleset) was the whole reason for making this 'create new ifo' procedure with the one-half-of-movie-only disc! This way I have one half of the movie on one disc without extras in vts_01!

And as I said, if there's a quick way to insert this dummy vobs I could simply copy over extras and menus to both discs, leaving create new ifo out and just have the complete structure on both discs, therefore also eliminating any angle/seamless branching probs, if any.

So are you talking about a split movie on 2 discs, with the movie in VTS_02.ifo? Or are you talking about the movie on 1 disc and the extras on another? I split and burned Return to Me successfully to 2 discs, and that movie was in the 02.vob.I did have to copy over the other files (01 too)to make it play correctly though. Are the 01 files too big to put on there?

No problems at all with Kate & Leopold (except for a pause where the layer break point is). You just have to change the precommand on disc 2 to go to the video manager menu. It's all there.

Hey Jasmin, again the simple solution was the answer! I fixed that pause in the movie with Kate & Leopold, I just had to add more files to disc 1 and that fixed it. There are some key information sometimes in those other files that is needed at times for the menus to work, and now I see for the movie too. So, everything is complete and there in Kate & Leopold now, no problems at all.

I reduce the 1 end sector first, save and overwrite, close ifoedit, reopen ifoedit, and then open VIDEO_VTS.ifo and get VTS Sectors and save and overwrite as well. Then, I copy over all of the other small files to both discs- by complete sets of the ifos (like vts_02-vts_04 only for example. In your case maybe vts_03-vts_06). Did you copy over any of the other small complete sets?

Just curious, did your vob extras options match the same one in the first picture on Doom9's guide on the link below? Those same boxes should be checked.

Josh,

I followed your instructions to the letter. I still get the relocation error. I copied VTS_01*.* and VTS_03*.* files to Disk1 folder. It contained all files as original folder except that VTS_02*.* and VIDEO_TS.* files were different, created by IFOEdit.

I checked the default options of “VOB Extras/Split to 2 DVD-Rs”. They are the same as in Doom9 guide. If anybody splits The Matrix,
let me know please. I getting ready to buy DVDXCopy...

Regarding the second disk, I did not have any problem with it. I did not copy VTS_01*.*
nor VTS_03*.* files. I just modified the VIDEO_TS so that the second part of the movie starts automatically, and burned a DVD. Nero did not complain.

Thank you.

Dvdxcopy can backup that movie. I wouldn't buy it (just my opinion). Ifoedit can do everything that dvdxcopy can do, and more in my opinion. Give me a couple of days to test the matrix and see what I can find. I know it can be done, I think it's just one small step that's being missed. It still sounds like the removing 1 end sector because disc 2 works... which makes it sound like the only problem was the end sector. Does the menu work on disc 2 as well? Just curious. Maybe I'm wrong, give me some time to check.
Did you see this thread?
Maybe it will help.

All what I did was to put Disk2 in my DVD player
and the movie started. I watched first 5 minutes and stopped it. I also pressed the menu button and got it on the TV. I did not try to
choose any item in the menu because, as I understand, there is nothing on the disk 2 except the second part of the movie. I will try it and let you know what happens. I have seen the tread you pointed to. I did not find that those guys had similar problems as I did.

Thank you for looking into "The Matrix".

@Josh:

Yeah, a split disc, with the movie in a titleset other than vts_01 needs either the 'create new ifo' process or at least the vts_01_titleset copied over to the disc.

The reason I want to have a way to replace long videos (vobs) with some short (dummy) vobs/clips is, I wouldn't have to do the 'create new ifo' thing on one of the discs, but simply copy over everything (menus/extras) from the original disc to BOTH discs, instead of only one...this way, I would have menu and extras on both discs, wouldn't have to recreate anything (except whatever has to be done to get these dummy vobs in) and would also not have to worry about something missing!

Okay, I came up with the following method (basically it is what Doom9's basic strip guide says) that does not replace vobs with a dummy, but just deletes certain features:

Instead of 'Create new IFO' after splitting on one disc without menu/extras as described above,
copy all other files (menus/extras) to BOTH discs and use IFOEdit's
Strip VOBIDs (check with VOBrator, which VOBIDs represent what feature of the disc)
to cut out some extras (don't cut pieces of the menu) to get to the size of one DVD-R, you then have menu on both discs, just that one disc doesn't contain all extras, this way, you can even decide, which extra to keep on which disc:

Check VOB with VOBrator, make a note of the VOBIDs, you want to keep. Open associated
IFO with IFOEdit (for VTS_XX_Y.VOB open VTS_XX_0.IFO) and use VOB Extras/Strip VOBIDs:
Strip VOBIDs, Correct VOBUnit pointers, Correct orig. IFO-Files, VOB-Expert:
Remove P-UOPs, Remove Macrovision, Adjust Vob-Unit pointers, adjust audio/subp.
pointers, VOB-Size 1 GB! Replace old ifos/vobs with newly created ones, open any ifo
from the disc and do Get VTs sectors!

ATTENTION: Stripping out only some and not all of the VOBIDs (that actually have content,
sometimes there are small VOBIDs, with no playable content, you can probably leave these)
of a VOB can leave to undesired effects, such as menu order screwed for all menus that use
this vob (because of VOBID renumbering). As I don't know how to edit the menus to use new
VOBIDs, I currently recomment, stripping either all (relevant, not the unplayable small ones)
VOBIDs of a vob or if you strip only some, strip consecutive and don't leave any in between
or after (for example, you have vob ids 1-9. You can strip 1-9 -> fine, you can strip 2-9 ->
fine, you can strip 3-9 fine and so on...you can NOT strip (without affecting the menu):
1-4 leaving 5-9 (5-9 then gets 1-5 and menu is screwed)!

---
Let me know, if it works for you, some quick tests here worked fine.

Still two things problematic, though:

1. The renumbering thing described above, Doom9's guide touches this, but still says, there is a problem ('Derrow is looking into it'), so there's no real solution there. Any idea as to how it might be possible to strip out some vobids in the middle and reassociate the new vobids to the menu? Well, it's maybe not that important, unless you insist on stripping that way...to keep all or most extras on one disc and delete a whole bunch on the other disc, stripping all vobids or last consecutive ones works fine.
2. What does happen on a standalone, if you select a disabled extra in the menu? If if freezes, we might have to disable buttons as described elsewhere here in the forum (there's even tool to do that. didn't try yet). Can you try the method and let me know, if it freezes on your standalone selecting stripped features?

Ok, I think I may have found the soltuion to Kate & Leopold once again. I will test it and let you know. The part it has been skipping is now there. I will burn it to a DVDR and fully test it. This may be a new method of splitting certain or all movies:
The only boxes I had checked was Split to 2 DVDRs, create subfolders, and autocopy menu files to destination. Maybe correct navigation pack, and the lluv/angle stuff in the xpert side was messing it up. Jasmin, have you tried splitting discs with only those boxes checked?

Well, I always thought, correct vob unit pointers (navigation pack) is needed, so I haven't tried without...I also always used correct original ifo files...but maybe(!) we can do without these two, if we don't strip anything?

On the vob-expert side I never used remove or adjust ilvu/angle! I just have remove puops and remove macrovision checked, as well as adjust vob-unit pointers (what is the difference here to correct vob unit pointers (nav pack)?) and adjust audio subp. point.!

You are right, it's maybe worth a try splitting something without these options, at least, if you don't strip anything (vobids, streams). But as I don't know exactly what they do, it would only be a shot in the dark...

The movie played fine it appeared on the computer, it looked like no scenes were being skipped, but problems came when trying to burn it. I may need to make some dummy .vob files for it to work. I tried it again with the correct ifos box checked too, and it was skipping scenes again. I may try again with the correct vob-unit (navigation pack) box checked above it and see how that turns out. So it appears the correct ifo box is the culprit for making that movie skip scenes. Will post what I find out tonight.
Gasha, will try to test the Matrix tonight too.

Take a look at my longer post further above, maybe try that method, simply copying over everything to both discs and stripping some vobids of extras for space reasons. Let me also know, if you know anything about point 1 and 2 at the end of the post, if you find the time, please!

Good luck!

BTW: Did you try DVDSplit and/or DVDXCopy on that movie?

Jasmin, you talked about making dummy files. This thread here talks about doing that. I may test that out tonight and see if it works.

Well, seems some people had problems with the dummy approach described in that thread...simply inserting 0 byte files trying to trick ifoedit...must destroy structure somehow :-) That guy only uses it, because he has a strange way of ripping the movie anyway...he rips it in two parts and ends up with dummies needed to fill up missing vobs...

Well, I am quite happy with my strip method from above, so I probably won't need dummys anymore...well, maybe if there's a simple way to insert them with a short clip saying 'content deleted' or something...

Ok, yeah, I didn't read all of it. I was thinking of making dummy files just to trick Nero into burning the movie, not for ifoedit. I would much rather have the movie be completely correct though.
